New Subaru Impreza STi 22B: Real Gran Turismo Restomod built to order

- Subaru Impreza STi 22B Recreation review: Real Gran Turismo Restomod built to order. The 22B was a limited edition Impreza STi sold in 1998 to commemorate 40 years of subaru car company and three WRC titles. 400 were sold to the Japanese Domestic Market, 16 in the UK and a couple in Australia.
Even Colin McRae had to pay for his!
Today these conservatively rated 280bhp 2-door wide-bodied Imprezas have become close to £300,000 cars. As a result ProDrive has announced their P25 edition, which is limited to 25 cars and priced at £500,000. Ouch. So, a company called Scooby Clinic decided to start building a recreation of the legendary 22B at a fraction of the price. Jonny needed to see their rural operation (conveniently on a muddy farm track, just like a rally stage) and drive one of these boxer turbo homages.

I genuinely feel that your channel is one of the best motoring channels out there. Keep up the good work Johnny.
That is really awesome to hear - thank you (and everyone else) for enjoying the content and proving that longer videos are not dead!
I agree it's a great channel. Lots of different stuff on it. I prefer a longer video too. Cheers lads.
Agreed
Totally agree. True passion, no BS, doesn't skip over the technical stuff, and proper test drives.
The distinctive tone of a Scooby engine! You know what it is miles away. Wanted one so bad when I was a kid.
The sound is just sublime.
One of the few cars (well, engines) you can tell straight away before you even see it. Brrrrrrrrrr
Nothing can make you feel more of a hero than driving the doors off a Subaru WRX. The best car I ever owned and it was serviced in that very garage. Awesome video Jonny once again.
Driving an STI 😂
Please tell me that you are taking the pi** aren't your.
@@lornecunningham326 And that is funny why ?

Your more of a hero driving an STI
I REALLY enjoyed this episode. I've owned Subaru's my entire life since the late 90's in the US. Unfortunately, we never received the WRX or the STI in the GC8 chassis. What a dream car. Thank you so much for creating this. 33 minutes blew by so quickly.
I have owned my Australian spec '98 WRX for 16 years. It was stored away for the last 5 years due to having too many other priorities. I recently pulled it out and have fallen in love again. It isn't the fastest, newest or most expensive car I own, but it just puts a smile on your face. It is such a good all rounder.
I had a green '08 registered MY99 for 10 years back in the day. I would call it "agricultural", and my current '08 STI is better in almost every way (except looks, obviously), but I would still love to go for a spin in the old girl again. That rawness definitely equates almost directly to excitement.
Do you reckon the spray dude is sick of blue? 😂
You can choose whatever colour you wish, that's the beauty of a self spec, ground up build
Funnily enough there's a few shades of Scooby blue, which Jonny didn't realise. But then he's colour blind...

Hands down the most beautiful Subaru road car of all time, most certainly a bucket list car and it reminds me very much of one of my all time hero’s the late great Colin McRae
B4 is nicer
What a legend. Once a hero to the Max Power brigade, now almost respectable. Showing its age perhaps and a bit slow compared to modern rivals but with way more character and charm than any of them. Much imitated but never bettered, we salute you Jonny Smith. P.S. the car's pretty cool too.
Many thanks Michael, that's lovely to say. Agree that it is the Max Power and Play Station poster car.
Great vid yet again mate I think you've found your sweet spot with UA-cam can video what ever ya want an bring us some great content
Many thanks. Yes, YT allows Jonny to explore car world in more detail.
The reality is that Subaru did use 4 slightly different shades of this blue
The love that goes into these types of companies is immeasurable! thank you for showing us and letting us see the full factory tour!
Remember laughing at my mate who paid £25k for a old Impreza 22B, back in 2006. Whos laughing now.🤦♂
I’m crying thinking just of it !!! I too would have said. Stick your money in a BM.
@@zzhughesd imported 22b think they where 500 made, at 1 stage these were low £20k cars, UK cars were about 16 from memory and these where at most £30k, but a UK car in today prices your talking £300k+, mental, but all my favourite Jap cars ive wanted/owned are now to expensive to buy for the normal working class bloke.

This is awesome 👏 and I not even a Scooby fan but thank you 🙏
I'm a massive Subaru fan. This is so great to see. I really hope we have a shop similar to this one, in the US. I used to have a red 91' Loyale wagon with a 5 speed I bought in northern Michigan. I had a friend a few years ago who had a silver Impreza. I never forgot the ride in it. Thank you.
I remember driving my WRX in the snow thinking I was some guy called Colin, needless to say 5 minutes later I was ringing my mate seeing if he could pull me out of a ditch - great work 👏👏
Such a timeless body shape with the wide body, I never get tired of looking at them. Seems like a massive bargain for 100k compared to the originals and you can use it without stressing to much.
The 22b is just about my all-time favourite car. Great video and a great insight into the people who are keeping all the Scooby's going.
I need that wagon 22b in my life, so I'm off to the shops for a lottery ticket.
I still love that Jonny looks at his “book” when he needs to know what’s happpening. The work he puts into that little “book” is love to read. Please release a book Jonny!! X

Thank you very much Carlo, Piero and the hard working guys from the former rally team.

In my world anyway.
Thanks again Jonny
A summers day, 2002/3. Walking home along a country lane, after playing on the haybails. A 2 door Impreza straddles the white line through the S.
The image of the Sun hitting the Rear arch is all I truly remember.
Soooooooo bloody poetic!
Just imagine if money was no option one of these would be in your collection! What a car! I have only ever seen one in person when I was a kid and instantly fell in love 🎉
I had a 97 impreza best handling car I have ever owned. Known of Scooby Clinic for years. Nice to see them in le flesh!
Stunning. Having owned 5, across the generations, wagons, special editions, modded etc... the greatest was my RCM Roger Clarke Motorsport build. God what a car, I'd go back and buy that car again over a 22B. Go and meet them Jonny, check out Gobstopper 1, 2 & 3.
1 was by far my favourite. That thing elevated the game at time attack
I once had a delivery for scooby clinic but got my van stuck in a field down a lane. They were fantastic help in getting me help!
Really enjoyed this video Johnny, and great to see you enjoying the exact roads I drive to work on daily! Feel I’ve missed a legend by not catching you at a junction!
Great video Johnny. I was there yesterday and saw the amazing 22b's too. SC are great & very lucky to have the experts so close by :-)
Well, that's my evening taken up with Impreza tinternet searching, and trying to come up with a convincing argument to deliver to my wife on how it will enrich our families lives...😄
Great episode yet again Jonny...🎩
Good luck convincing. Chuffed you enjoyed the episode.
Do you earn your own money? I’m fed up of thinking if I have to ask my Mrs for anything I enjoy. I just save up and buy it.
@@Metal05 Mate, ive been doing this for years having to justify spending my own money, I used to think it was just my wife, but a number of my friends are in the same boat. What I do now is I just buy what I want and have the argument after, but the problem is I cant leave cars standard so I end up spending shed load of money on modifying too, and I end up getting the phone call at work when parcels turn up at home with a big brake kit, coilovers, turbo upgrade etc.
@@welloilbeefhooked4984 I know what you mean. I just buy what I want and she doesn’t even know. I’ve got a big brake kit going on my car next Thursday and an intercooler, and a new guitar coming! Fed up of justifying why. What do we go
To work for?
I'll always remember the day my Dad turned up at home with an unmarked police Turbo 2000 Impreza around 1994/1995 and took me and my brother for a bleg, it was by far the quickest thing I'd ever been in! He worked motorway so used to come home in all kinds of cool stuff, Senator 24v, ST24, XR4i (and I seem to remember an XR4x4), Cavalier V6, Range Rovers, SD1's etc etc.
Always wanted a scooby since.
Great video and bought back some great memories. I had 4 Sti Imprezas back in the day and still miss them now. And the noise.
The sound of the engine revving short moments in each gear reminded me of late night street racing. Those guys let the clutch take the hit by moving the foot sideways with the engine on the limiter.
I'd love to have a spirited drive in one of those recreations.
Lennart, I have to ask if you are related to Tommi? 😇
@@caffinemc1 There is 20k or so "Mäkinen" in finland. Having said that, its bit weird/wrong seeing Mäkinen at subaru videos comment section. 😁

Something you should definitely avoid doing with scoobies, they really don't like having the clutch dumped
Scooby Clinic are great! The guys are lovely and super knowledgeable, they have helped me in the past and I saw the 22R :)
As a new owner of a JDM 22B in Australia, absolutely loved this video and found out many new interesting facts.
Great job on the vid and yes, been watching you on the screen since the turn of the century!
I’ll be sure to share this vid on my WRX Cult page…

Just had a look at your page, dude. Great content. I'll be sure to stick notifications on for any updates.
Brilliant choice of plates. Absolutely perfect for the car.
Just an awesome episode! This was the first video of this channel that I watched, and definitely not the last. As a subie owner this half an hour video felt like 5-7mins. Always great to see Jonny reviewing cars👌🏼

The distinctive sound of a scooby is fantastic.
Great video about an iconic car Jonny.
I met you at Manchester Central a couple of years when I brought my Celica GT-Four. I also have an Impreza RB5 which I was thinking of selling this year but after watching this I'll probably hold on to it now. They were made for roads like those around Derbyshire.
Well done!
😮Been thinking of this for over a year now. Great concept. Bravo Cusco
Great video Jonny love the content and that two door in the ramp was so nice

As a jdm Subaru owner it’s nice to see some new content on the cars. Great video Johnny and the new camera angles were very cool.
Brilliant video again. I've just bought my first Scooby. Will be visiting these boys for some mods.
Simply simply Lovely, amazing car amazing work. You did it again Jonny. 😎
Subaru Impreza 22b is a class machine, one of my all time favourite cars ever. Great vid Jonny.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. Had the pleasure of owning a 2003 Impreza for several years and regret selling it!
First thought "oh I know that garage". Second thought "and then he's going to visit some of the country's most dangerous roads in a Subaru". Nice one ;)
We didn’t get STI Imprezas until the second Gen.
But I instructed a guy who built his own turbo coupe from the Subaru parts bin. Sadly on track day it was down to “only” 300hp. I was so impressed I bought new a 2.5RS sedan. Loved it. Wife hated it.
I miss that car. The wife… not missed as much.😂😂
GREAT video, even GREATER car and kudos to "The Clinic" for all they do!
Great video as always jonny. As the main organiser and runner of the South Manchester Subaru Owners Club, SMACS for short, in the past, its always great to see the old cars back in the limelight. The strong community amongst the Subaru Owners back then was so good. Happy days indeed. Although my bank balance filling up would disagree 😐
top video again guys, bravo!
I'm imagining a future where these shells/pannels etc can be 3D printed from scanned cars, for us mortals to have a shot at owning

Few cars to this day feel so alive as a scooby off road or country lane...

One classic car I would buy in any platform. Thank you for sharing and love the two door wagon.
Thanks John. Yes, how cool is the 2 door wag?!
Very enjoyable watch! The Subaru DNA is a hard one to move away from once you've owned a few...
Amazing presentation,,,thoroly enjoyed thank You!
What a fantastic video Johnny. Great job.
I remember back in 2002 there was a "cruise" at an airfield in Ireland. There was a 22B and a P1 impreza in the grassy section next to the runway doing rings. At a closer look the dads where in the passenger seat and the sons (about 13 years old) in the drivers seat doing perfect donuts. I knew then that was the car to have. So many fond memories.
This is awesome! Thanks for putting this video together
Great video, Jonny. That 2 door wagon was amazing 😍 Please revisit that project if it ever gets finished!
I think it's brilliant. Can't wait to see it completed.
Jonny this was EPIC !!! And it's going on my favorites list 🥰
I had a 1999 Impreza 2.5 RS Coupe & sold it a few years ago & have been kicking myself ever since 😭💔
But when I win the lottery, I'll contact this shop straight away. I'd love to have them build that 2 door wagon for me & make it LHD, since I live in the USA. PLEASE make more videos like this !!!
Great video, informative and interesting.well done 👍 Johnny
Great vid, love the cars. Always heard mixed reviews on Scooby clinic. Can’t validate as I’m an Evo guy.
I remember they used to love a good potholed road.
Thanks Jonny. Another great Vid. Keep em coming!
I'll never forget the 1st time I floored it in my 1st Impreza Turbo 2000 Wagon. It just felt so fast, and so mechanical, almost agricultural. Superb seats and driving position.
To think it only had around 220 hp. Wish I'd taken the plunge on a 22B or a P1. P1's back then ('06 ish) were £4 - 5 k.
Agricultural???
UK have so many cool creative shops and garages. Very cool video!
Absolutely love this presentation!
I would love to have Scooby Clinic in the US....
I had a new STi Type R back in 1998. It was the correct blue and I absolutely loved it (despite blowing a hole through a piston). Well, I grew up and have had mainly big GT cars ever since, but then the GR Yaris came on the scene and I just got the road going rally fever all over again and immediately bought one. This is unbelievably tempting.....
I'm so lucky a friend of mine has a 22B a 2-door STI and a 4 door STI they look amazing or sitting together and you can really appreciate how wide that 22B
Your friend has good taste
I bought my first Scooby from those guys back in 2000, it’s was a farmers wagon taken in PX. Loved it!
Love the quality of video. You enjoyed Driving one. I enjoyed you enjoying it. I’ve got the lottery on. Superb as always.
Cheers David, put a lot of effort into this one despite weather trying to hurt us!
@@TheLateBrakeShow welcome
You ought to speak to Marty & MOOG about the pick up they made in conjunction with Hot Rod magazine.....
If they'd had more time, the pickup would have been almost factory looking and it didn't look to bad at all.
I've only just come across this video as it's been brought to my attention that, in my other incarnation as an upholsterer, I did the interior retrim for the GUV-registered 22B replica in the first part of this video!
It's really nice to see it all fitted and looking sharp in such a beautiful car. Proud moment for me!
In ‘98 I borrowed a standard WRX for a week from a guy at work (company car) while he went on holiday. I took it to Wales. It was just awesome. Back then it was like nothing else and even now I think it would be more ‘real world’ fun than all these 400hp Audi/BWW/Mercedes Luxo rockets. Too detached an experience and too frustrating to drive on todays busy roads.
Way more fun than a DSG fart box!
Nice video Jonny. I've 2 memories of scoobies.
Sadly neither are 22B related.
1st was my 1st boss used to have an R reg one, it had done over 200k miles easy, but he took me out in it to collect a van. 1st round about, we took it sideways!
2nd, was my 30th present, half a day at a rally experience, although the time was short driving one, it gave me a taste of what a scooby could do off road.
Great show yet again, you are definitely the best motoring journalist out there.
With the prices of the 22B going mental, the next one in line is the type R, and now with the demand of making the 22B replicas from them that will surely make the type R value also increase.
Many thanks M Sheep.
Never had one but a workmate had the WRX estate and it sounded amazing when he floored it… would love to drive one cheers Johnny !!
I have to say my main thought about this episode is who on earth is parting with £300,000 for a Subaru?
Considering that in April a 22b UK spec was for sale for 10k.

@@statementleaver8095 300k for a Subaru lol. I'd say they might need to put the crack pipe down. 300k lol yeah nah.

I love a 22B - as an Australian living in the UK, Ive never actually seen one in the flesh, we did get one back in OZ, but it was delivered to Subaru & from memory wasnt road legal as didnt have the correct side intrusion protection. Hard to believe they are fetching so much now days, but Im not sure I would drop 100k on one personally, even if it does look the part!
there is one for sale here now for 800K Aud
Driven a whole load of early Scoobies, Used to rust proof loads of import stuff so seemed like I was in an Impreza every week, remember the feel of the Nardi wheel in my hands the first time I got in an RA. WRXs, Import STI, Type Rs I even drove an SVX which was a weird car. Later when I had my tint business I carried on working on Imprezas and still regret not buying a P1 when I had the chance, but needed a new van.
Brilliant Video Mr Smith, the closest I will get to a 22B is the model of the one I have in my loft! Another car I really need to drive is a Impreza.

I did wonder why you were up around Chesterfield not so long back on Twitter. I’ve spent the odd afternoon down at Scooby clinic as my dad had two WRX wagons and we’re local. I’ll always have a soft spot for Imprezas. They felt like the fastest thing in the world as a kid.
