I just realized that the sand zombies were never even trying to take away Steven. They were only going after Marc. Steven’s entire purpose was to protect Marc so it makes sense that he had to sacrifice himself to balance the scales. This show is amazing 🥲

It’s incredibly tragic how easily Marc let’s himself believe he’s insane. You can tell it’s something he’s believed the whole show- that he’s just crazy and that that makes him lesser.

the fact that he wasn't driven to total insanity by sheer overwhelming guilt from those deeply tragic events which many ppl might've been says alot about his character tho. not to mention his mother's relentless torment and a father unwilling or unable to stop it means he had no allies for his mental stability the remainder of his childhood in that house

This is a great example of why therapy is so important. The whole family needed intense grief therapy, especially the mom. I wonder what time period it was when Marc's brother died. It feels like the whole family was isolated in too many ways, no one to step in and see what was happening, so tragic!! Ironically, the therapy Marc was getting in the 'mental hospital' was really good! He and Steven faced what they needed to face. Maybe they integrated enough so that both will return to life and share their body.

I would posit Marc's childhood was late 80s or early 90s, basing that on Oscar Isaac's age. I think mental health support was going into an upswing then, but it had far to go, and I doubt understanding of DID was great at the time (though it was known, as MPD).

The fact that they chose to have Taweret be the god present for this is surely no mistake. Sure, it makes sense in terms of a lot of the mythology of traveling to the afterlife, but the story of what was going on with Marc fits in thematically with her in a way, given she's the goddess of 'motherhood' and 'children', but also the cleansing of the soul, all things Marc had to deal with in this episode.

When I watched it I thought it was primarily because they are connected by an oath with an Egyptian God, used power from that God and interacted with those Gods and their avatars. So if Bucky died while in Wakanda, fighting back to back with the Black Panther, he could easily end up on the ancesteral plane. Hmm... I wonder what would happen if an Egyptian avatar like Moon Knight drank that magic flower that grows in Wakanda? You know - the one that every Black Panther drinks after inheriting their powers. Would Moon Knight just saw people like his dead mom and other ancestors or maybe the Egyptian Gods? He could even organize a meeting between Khonshu and Wakandan Gods.

Just an FYI, I don't actually think that's Harrow somehow "invading" their little personal purgatory. I think it's just another aspect of the understanding that Marc and Steven have created for themselves in that realm, and "Dr. Harrow" really is only there to help them make sense of it.
The reason it's Harrow is because he's an adversary with horrifically good intentions. He accepts things for what they are, even when their evil, but he still seeks to fix things that aren't right (even if his methods are pretty monstrous). He's really ideal to help them sort out their shit. Obviously he's wrong about the fantasy part, but if you pay attention, he did set them on the right path to dealing with their trauma instead of ignoring it and hiding it away.
Marc and Steven see them as the enemies they remember, because they DON'T want to deal with it, so anything or anyone who tries to get them to, feels like an enemy to them. But Harrow isn't cruel or bloodthirsty, he's just doing what he thinks needs to be done. That's why he's the doctor in their little corner of that afterlife. It's not the actual Harrow, or even a vestige of him...just their mental interpretation of him relative to their current experience.
There is no better teacher than one's enemy.

This is an episode about childhood death, childhood grief, parental neglect, child abuse (both psychological *and* physical), self-blame for tragedy, and the very complicated emotions when someone who was a big part of your life, but abusive, dies. Anyone who can fully keep it together for this episode has no heart. It destroyed all the rest of us, too.

People seem to be giving the dad a lot of criticism for not stopping it (or trying to stop it) but we don't know that. Besides, you know how little chance fathers have of getting sole custody of their kids after a divorce? Here in the UK, where this seems to be taking place, it's only 17% of cases. If Marc's dad tries to do that, there's a good chance his son gets left alone with one abusive parent.

I think people want to make the Marvel TV shows so much bigger and inter connected and are disappointed that Marc's DID wasn't from Thanos or Mephisto. The core of this show is about a man handling a disorder that many deal with. So I think this episode is so pivotal to Marc's story that I am fine that we missed Ammit being released. MoonKnight is top tier storytelling.

Thank you for being one of the only people I've seen call out the dad's role in the abuse. I've seen people say things like "well at least his dad was nice!" and ...no, that's not how abusive childhoods work. If you are a parent it is your responsibility to protect your child and keep them safe, and when one of the parents is an abuser, that means taking action to stop the abuse, get your child out of that situation, or get that parent out of your lives.
Marc even calls him out on that when he's already an *adult* (in context I'm guessing 18 and leaving for the military) and his dad is still saying "she'll get help!" No, it was HIS job to get her help a *decade* ago, and if it didn't work or she refused to take it, it was HIS job AS THE ADULT to get his son OUT of that situation (for example, by *divorcing the woman who is abusing your son*), and he failed to or was unwilling to do either.
There's many, many codependent enabler parents married to physically or emotionally abusive parents out there, and just because they aren't beating their kid themselves doesn't mean they aren't abusing their kids themselves by perpetuating or enabling the existing abuse.

DID is usually the result of sexual or physical abuse during childhood. In DID, each alter is a vessel/container of the trauma experienced by the child. Basically, an alter was created because the child could not handle the severe sustained trauma that he/she is experiencing at the moment so he/she created an alter to basically take over the mind and body. DID usually happens in childhood because that is the time when we are sort of piecing together different traits/characteristics that we’ll develop as we grow up into one whole personality/identitiy, but in DID this process gets disrupted and shatters into pieces, hence, the creation of alter/s.In order for the mind to survive from the trauma each alter may lock up the memories of trauma, and it’s up to the primary alter/host (Marc) to access that whenever he/she is ready. Steven is seen as the protector of the system so like Marc said he is there to essentially be a "stressball".I like how Moon knight represents them as needing one another because without they would essentially be unable to cope and if need be there will be more alters in the system as hinted at in the episodes.

Mark is the main. Steven to escape from the abuse, but when the attacks came, Steven couldn't accept that aspect of their mother. So Steven created Jake. An Alt created an Alt. That's why when Steven was frozen there was balance because Jake is an Alt of Steven.
Jake was the alt that was speaking to the Doctor while he was showing the damage to his nose. His accent and demeanor were totally different.
Somehow, I think Jake is going to save the three of them. Because he IS a separate person the way Steven is. So somewhere, he is still free to act.

I am not ok. This was so much. It was fantastic and the best I've ever seen from Marvel but it was hard.
And I find myself now being angry at me, because I don't want Steven to go. I like him so much, but at the same time I want Marc to heal. He needs and deserves healing so much and healing for him will eventually mean that Steven has to go but not like this. I am not ok with this.
I can't imagine how they will wrap up EVERYTHING in just one episode. I secretly hope that next episode is either 2 hours long or that they will give us a 7th episode as a surprise.
Needless to say but I'll do it anyway. The cast here is incredible and Oscar Isaac ...wow. I totally forgot that Oscar Isaac is playing both characters. It felt like two people. He is amazing. I cried almost through the whole episode.

It's hard for me to judge the father. He had a lot on his plate and he was grieving too. We saw things from Marc's point of view, so we aren't seeing the family's full story.
Mom checked out after Randall's passing, that much is clear. And from the looks of it, at least from what we saw, Wendy (Marc's mom) only tormented Marc when his father WASN'T around. His father wasn't present for one birthday and THAT'S when his mother came into the picture with drink in hand. She also beat him when his father wasn't around.
Marc's dad clearly handled things better than the mother, and he did what he could to keep a roof over his family's heads while being a friend/father to his son and husband and caregiver to his wife while also grieving himself. It's disappointing that family, friends, rabbis, etc. weren't there to help the family out--if they were, we didn't see that.
Marc's dad appears to be unaware of physical abuse Marc was going through, possibly the verbal one's too as it looks like the full force of it happened when he WASN'T around. Marc became a different person and suppressed much of that abuse. He experienced abuse for sure, but I bet most of it was recognized after he switched back to himself. The scars his mother left, the physical ones might not have been visible too, keeping Marc's father in the dark. The fear she put him through likely made it impossible for Marc to tell his father about it too. We shouldn't forget that Marc still loved his mother despite the hell she put him through. He could say goodbye to her in person, but he sure did grieve for her in the middle of the street and he still called her to check in, albeit as Steven, but this episode showed us that Marc and Steven are in fact the same person and that Marc was just suppressing a past he didn't want to come to terms with.
As depressing as this episode was, it was a fantastic story. Moon Knight's story is my new favorite story in the MCU. We still have a finale to see, but I don't see them dropping the ball now after five solid stories. Everyone has brought their A-Game for each new chapter. Emmys for everyone!
    EDIT:
30:27 Marc absolutely knew the truth. He was going to give everything to Steven because Steven represents the best of Marc. Steven is Marc's hero, and who doesn't want to be their hero? The longer things went on, however, the harder it became for Marc to let go, and Layla entering the picture after he had successfully pushed her away made that even harder for him, as she was the one thing he was proud of as himself. Steven had shown Marc that he couldn't protect Layla and that was a problem for him. Marc was at odds with himself. He believed that he needed Steven, as Steven was his safe spot and the best of himself. Layla is special to him, someone he truly cannot live without.

I know I'm a little bit late to the party, but as an Egyptology nerd I wanted to offer some explanation just to help people understand what the weighting of hearts ceremony does, the outcomes, and what the Duat and Aaru (Field of Reeds) actually are, at least from a mythology standpoint.
The Duat was not considered Hell in the way monotheistic religions portray it with all the hellfire and anguish and whatnot. The name in Egyptian is actually "dwꜣt", a biliteral word combining "under" and "world" (which some still debate, but either way it's words similar to that meaning), but it's more of a form of purgatory than anything else. The link people make to it being like hell is mostly due to it being a subterranean realm, just like where the location of hell is described in other religious texts.
Every soul goes to the Duat for judgment. For those who have hearts lighter or in balance with the feather, they are allowed to leave the Duat and ascend to Aaru, where they live their afterlife in eternal peace, prosperity, and rest. Aaru is similar to heaven, but it's more of a paradise full of an abundance of crops, wealth, and prosperity. Ushabti figurines (or in this context, it's actually shabti figurines) represented servants who would help the deceased do manual labor or chores when they reached Aaru, allowing them to rest and relax peacefully without the worry of having to tend to the crops or make food.
For those who are unbalanced, they remain in the Duat to wander eternally, facing constant challenges as they try to find balance, some never finding it at all and remaining frozen in sand, consumed by their guilt. This is why Marc began to turn to sand in the finale, it was the guilt of not being able to save Steven weighing down his heart.
But, if a person's soul is able to heal and shed the guilt weighing their heart down, they can petition to be judged again. If they are judged again and their heart is lighter or in balance with the feather, they are reincarnated for a second chance to reach Aaru with that life. They retain no memories of their first life so as to not influence the true nature of their soul with the result of their initial judgment. Marc had already made it to Aaru, so he was not reincarnated or judged again, he was just yeeted back into his body through Osiris' gate.
However, if the person is deemed unworthy with a heart heavier than the feather, their heart-and essentially their soul-is fed to Ammit and consumed. The person's very being is destroyed. No afterlife, no second chance.
And that, to the Ancient Egyptians, was a worse fate than any hell a monotheistic religion could create.

Theory #1: Opening sequence = JAKE the 3rd ALTER!!! Notice the broken nose, slightly different accent, smooth grab for a stabby weapon, mention of releasing a monster, and the difference in overall demeanor. My theory is Jake appeared to do the job Marc is supposed to do for Khonshu = Marc will whip your ass and kill but only when absolutely necessary but I don't think he's truly a killer so Jake comes out to kill for him and then disappears again.
Theory #2 = 'Loss' of Steven via Marc coming to grips w/his horrible childhood = that alter is no longer needed as a coping mechanism and will hopefully be reintegrated into Marc. I hope that means he now has all the knowledge of Steven going forward.
Theory #3 = Jake and Steven were created simultaneously with Steven as the coping mechanism and Jake to take all that abuse from mom. Unwarranted abuse = anger/rage = Jake is the Stabby Joe personality. This is why Steven has no memory of getting his ass whooped by mom - Jake took all of that for both Marc and Steven.

  • @JeronisLeror
    @JeronisLeror 2 роки тому +9

Hold out some hope. Sometimes, after understanding why they are the way they are, an alter will give up themselves, and heal into the other selves, (balancing their soul, in a manner of speaking,) ALSO Marc didn't need to accept it. Stephen did. Now...They are still fully blocking out Jake. As long as one alter continues to exist, all alters can be restored to "life," due to the persistent nature of trauma. One of our alters had faded, but when a shared trigger (where a single truama triggering event hits two switch triggers,) she came back within minutes of me switching out with the other alter that was triggered. Again, persistent trauma. So, Stephen may return if something triggers Stephen at the same time as Jake.

Did he lie to Layla about his mom still being alive but not on speaking terms, or did he lie to himself that that was the case? Second, I'd consider getting the DVD/Blueray of this series JUST to get the writer/director commentary for this episode. If there was ever a TV episode that would merit one it seems like this is it. I don't know if they usually storyboard TV shows but given the number of cuts, reveals, abrupt scene changes and heavy emotional content here I'm not sure how else you'd go about it.
Thirdly, I continue to find the scoring for MK the best of the Marvel shows so far. That song at the field of reeds at the end was a perfect fit

Tawaret taking the role of Anubis here was a bit weird but she's quite adorable :) In the mythology (according to some sources) the dead travels on the river through the godesses gates and then got judged after, but here they did it at the same time, it feels more like Greek mythology, but it was still really cool and the most important was Marc and Steven's journey in their memories, I was really sad for them, and I'm gonna miss Steven :(
