He did. He told police it was actually her idea - of course, that could just be to make it seem like he's less of a killer in his own mind. She did have gun residue on her that wouldn't have been from being shot.

They got that home at a really good price, why walk away from that kind of deal for a hoax?

Very true - there's also photos from the home that have spirits in them. I don't believe the entire story was a hoax, but could it have been exaggerated?

I don’t believe it was a hoax. The fact that more than 3 people were MURDERED inside that house during dark hours alone means there’s gotta be some sort of bad / negative energy inside that house… just my view

Ron Defeo was diagnosed a schizophrenic. Nothing bad in the house itself. None of the other owners have reported any paranormal activity.

I think it was a hoax. I thought the priest said he didn't go in person but blessed it over the phone don't know if that is true or not

I've heard different stories, but there is a documentary that the son did with the priest admitting he went to the home. It's always so "fun" with these stories isn't it?

@@creepycasesspookyspacesthe son in My Amityville Horror seems like he has issues. I think since he was a child at the time, his memories could easily be influenced by the stories over all the years.
The other two siblings were asked to participate in it, but declined, so that begs the question of why.

@@Axeman517 I agree, he has had a traumatic life. I wouldn't discount his memories based on that though. I think the other two siblings are just done with the hype and living in that shadow of being the kids who grew up in the home. I don't think it's fully a hoax but I also think some of the happenings were exaggerated.

Hoax. So many people have come forward now that knew George Lutz, but kept quiet while he was alive.
Did the evil spirits decide that haunting one family was good enough, since so many others have lived there & still there with nothing happening. The house has even been blessed as well with no occurrences.
Would you admit a hoax if so many people believed it & the main success of the book ,& movies were because it were "true". You would become hated very quickly. Daniel changed his name & Missy left it all behind. Christopher still maintains some of it happened but says it was greatly exaggerated.

George Lutz business was going down hill, couldn't afford mortgage. They knew about the murders, they moved in 6 months after, not a year. If I remember, the lawyer for Ronnie defeo was friends with the Lutz family. He told defeo that he heard voices and use a haunting as a insanity plea. The lawyer and the Lutz's came up with the haunting story. Made friends with the author and the rest is history. This story is all over. I've seen it on discovery plus, UA-cam other videos. I've seen a video about the oldest Lutz boy saying it wasn't haunted. He said George was into the occult that why he wanted to move there.

@@strkngfang The problem comes in that you have so many people who have witnessed things - did all of this happen? Most likely not, I'm sure some of it was exaggerated. I also don't think I believe it was the family before that was haunting the home, but I do think there was something that was invited in. I just don't see so many people witnessing the same things at different times all being in on the hoax. The main players - sure - but not everyone. I don't think it was purely hoax but I don't think the level of what was being told was what happened.

The Calamityville Horror Michael Kernan • September 16, 1979
      Washington Post
About the lie detector test: Chris Gugas, a Los Angeles polygraph specialist, reported that he tested the Lutzes separately, his associate working with Kathy, asking about the levitation incidents, the brief transformation of Kathy into a 90-year-old woman, the other events.
"They both answered truthfully," Gugas said.
"They were pretty frightened, and it took us nearly two hours to get him calmed down.
But what they told us, they believed."
Gugas added that he has run tests on several people in occult cases, finding that some were lying outrageously, but that some were telling the truth. Among his credentials he lists polygraph tests on James Earl Ray, Robert Vesco and actress Terry Moore, whom he confirmed in her claim to have been Howard Hughes' wife.

Listen, as I clearly stated in the episode multiple times. I believe there was paranormal activity..but as someone who takes getting all the facts before making a decision, I gave all of the reported facts. That way people can make their own decision on if the believe it was a hoax or not. I'll gladly visit the home and stay there but I highly doubt the owners who actually remodeled to have some of the attention taken off of the home would like that very much.

It was a hoax. No one since the Lutzes have reported any paranormal activity in the house. The Lutzes admitted to making it all up. Ron Defoe was digonsed as schizpohrenic - that explains he claim to have heard voices. So yeah. I'd go spend the night there, but with one other person as a witness. Wouldn't have to be a friend, just another person to serve as a witness. And it's 'crew', not 'Crue'.
