  • We're reviewing every Neo Geo game, and this time it's Mutation Nation, 1992 from SNK. We'll explore why this game has such a low catalog number, yet was released so late, in 1992.
One thing I have since learned about this game is that it seems to be the first to use SNK's MAKOTO sound driver, making it very likely that the music wasn't done until around 1992.

Have you noticed how Ricky looks like Kyo Kusanagi? In fact, from what I've heard, there were people who thought that Kyo WAS Ricky when they played KOF 94 for the first time.

I had this mvs, and I honestly never knew the characters names until fairly recently. I have also thought the same thing that either he was an inspiration or was kyo.

I've changed my stance on the game's music since making the video. The music is definitely more 1992 than 1990.

I hear that there were people who thought that Kyo Kusanagi was the player 1 character from this game.

Yesterday I rewatched all the reviews so far, only to find a new vid in my subscriptions! I hope you never stop doing these. It's so good to have a comprehensive review archive of some of the more obscure Neo Geo games.

I spy with my little eye a pvm 2030 (it's in the old demo footage)! Most stylish pro monitor I've ever seen. Love seeing old footage of pro monitors.

I just played this game for the first time on my NeoSD Pro AES a few days ago and REALLY enjoyed it. Though I'm a sucker for beat em ups. As a huge fan of the CD-I's Mutant Rampage Body Slam, I have to admit that part of the reason why I wanted to play it was because it was another beat em up with Mutant in the name. I marked out when I saw your Mutant Rampage Bodyslam reference. Some of the enemy designs from both games really complement each other.
    Great review!

I'm glad you liked it. I mention it's everyone's favorite non-CD-I based mutant themed brawler, but if you count TMNT as "mutant themed" then... well, it ruins the joke.

The 4 different special attacks are not all the same in terms of strength. B and D will take off the most life from a boss, followed by C, and A is the weakest (but still stronger than your default special)
There are 3 different set of attack combos. Tapping A while standing still for a ground combo, holding up will result in a air combo (does not work on bosses) and holding down will do a series of rapid fire punches that does a lot of damage to both enemies and bosses (unfortunately this combo can only be done with an autofire button as the input rate required is impossible to achieve via normal tapping)
I remember someone once told me he thought Player 1's character is Kyo Kusanagi. I mean sure, he does have Kyo's black jacket and his white headband (even though it's blue in game) but that's where the similarity ends. Last I checked Kyo can't turn into a green tornado or do Chun-li style rapid kicks

18:31 actually, if you look in fatal fury 3's credits, it tells you who did each character's theme... and for Joe (and Bob), it says PAPAYA. So Hataya did in fact reuse part of his own older track

I love all things SNK but this game was...okay. It is no Streets of Rage 2 nor is it Final Fight. Sengoku 3 was SNK's best and it was good but it lacks decent crowd control that made the Streets of Rage series does so well.
We have an arcade in our home complete with several stand up coin-op machines. We have two MVS 4-slot cabs, AES, and CDZ. This does not include our retro game room and we have two if every current gen console including the enhanced models as my fiancee and I are huge gamers.
At any rate, this is an excellent review for a decent beat em' up of yester year. I own Mutation Nation in the AES and CDZ (lot purchase). I really enjoyed all the animated sequence that you guys have here. It was a great trip down memory lane. I love the Homer Simpson bit when he is talking to Burns about his hounds.

I think Mutant Nation is my favorite of the Neo Geo beat 'em ups. It's a little quirky. Including the whole jump kick is actually one of the weakest attacks. Which is the opposite from things like the TMNT Arcade game.

early games loaded from CD perfectly, they were small enough to fit in the RAM, if only snk
-had released the neogeo cd instead of the mvs for the console market
    - re released or upgraded to 2x later as games grew

I always thought this is a weird game. No lifebars for the enemies, only two characters to choose and a very limited moveset - there are just many better brawlers out there. The Neo Geo was/is the best system for fighting games, but not for brawlers imo.

The games are the same, but on different shaped cartridges. They play in a different mode depending on which system they are played in.

The next game in line you are gonna review is my favorite game for the Neo Geo. Most reviews I read say it's mediocre or just a button masher, but that's because they don't know how to play the game.
So I sort of have a video response to you, I've done a video of 1-Credit-Clearing King Of The Monsters on HARD, showing you how to play and beat the game. Hopefully you will give King Of The Monsters a fair review:
