- The next game in our Neo Geo survey, NGH-024, Last Resort, 1992 from SNK. Is this one of the best shooters, or shmups, on the Neo Geo?
We're going through the Neo Geo collection, with footage from real hardware, not emulators. Check out top games to play on the Neo Geo console, Neo Geo Mini, Neo Geo MVSX hack, or Neo Geo MVS cabinet.

Your best video so far Alec. What you’re doing is really important and you’re doing an amazing job. Can’t wait for the next one. And you got it totally right about this game.
You're the best! Glad you liked it! More to come!
I have a huge Poster of Last Resort hanging framed in my gameroom. I never played the game, but its promotional art had to be displayed in my gameroom.
Now i see where Devil Engine got its design inspiration from.
Troy McClure's "what the hell" made me laugh so hard that it woke up my wife.
I love Last Resort Alec. I think it was a fantastic game for the Neo-Geo. I have the English version for the AES and the Japanese version for the NGCD. Great way to end my weekend right seeing you in action and discussing video games bro. 8^)
Anthony..
I've been checking the Chanel almost everyday for months now to see if this dropped. Excited to watch it tonight. I got the 2all on this game last month for the first time.
Damn it! I thought it was premiering tonight. Oh well I be watching on Sunday.
@@riggel8804 Yeah, sorry for the wait. If I do a premiere again, I'll try and do a shorter wait.
@@BasementBrothers No prob. I don't mind the wait but most the channels I follow do premiers like 20 hours before so I got used to that.
I think the premiere function is cool. Should help with views.
@@BasementBrothers You know how to build hype!
Oh heck yeah, a great shooter for the legendary Neo.
The cart soundtrack has that distinct early 90s Neo vibe.
I have it on CD! I love the arranged Redbook OST! Fun fact: most NeoGeo CD games can be played in either a car stereo, or a hi-fi surround sound! I recommend it!
Oh... This video has something for you.
CDs can be played in a CD player? That is an amazing fun fact! I would've never imagined that was possible.
@@gordonshumway7465 not all of them. certain Sega CD, Amiga CD32, and even PlayStation CDs cannot be played on a mysic player (some use the processors of the Console itself to compose the ost as like some type of protection from piracy).
@@Gecko1993HogheadIncOfficial I assume you were born in 1993, if you think chip tunes were used to avoid piracy that is hilarious.Because obviously that prevented piracy of Playstation CDs.
I just got this game for my Neo Geo CD after watching this video and while I’m finding it really hard, I gotta say I love it! You guys are my favorite gaming channel on UA-cam especially for how thorough these videos are; and I just gotta say I appreciate how much I’ve learned about my favorite hobby from your videos
This is really breathtaking! This channel is loaded with so much quality content. Thank you so much for sharing tate, gosh I mean mate (damn too late...)
Warm regards ;)
I always enjoy this video series whenever a new episode is released. Keep up the great work!
Nice review! Facts straight from SNK, this game was in development before neo home release. 5 years in development! Was going to be a launch title! This was the hardest game for SNK to develop at the time. Was scraped completely, then picked back up!
*dudes spinning uncontrollably and plummeting to the earth without a parachute after their ship explodes*
Neo Alec : "They're safely ejecting."
That one particular enemy is a straight-up Hygogg from Gundam.
And I thought I was the only one that noticed that; lots of space shooters have gundam-like mech design (like the Rick-Dom like guys from space harrier) but in this game they literally just used one pretty much; they did beautifully render the Hy-Gogg at least 😎
Great video as always, the best series about the Neo Geo on the internet
Really glad you think it's that good!
Agreed
Jam that pod in there! Love it
The 'tate' joke cracked me up, not gonna lie.
Funny how later SNK got mixed up with Akira again when they designed K9999 as a direct copy of Tetsuo, got in trouble and canned the character, only to recreate someone else with the same moveset and called it Nameless, and now they've done it again with Krohnen. Those guys sure love Akira
=D Loving the series of reviews =D
I am so happy that you release another video in this series. Every one has been a big treat so far. Thanks a lot!
These are the best NeoGeo video reviews that I've watched. Awesome writing & editing plus the fact that Neo Geo CD differences are always a part of the review makes these an indispensable tool for me.
Wow, thanks! Glad you're watching and enjoying them!
So sad. This project is suspended.
Great video/review. Love Last Resort and can't wait until you get to some of the even more impressive shmups on the system. Cheers.
Last Resort is a masterpiece shmup. It is a jewel in the Neo Geo library and a must have for the SNK enthusiast. Great review. I never knew about the prototype before.
Excellent review on this awesome game. Thanks Alec, great job, Looking forward for more to come. Cheers from Germany
Thanks! Glad you're watching.
been waiting a long long time for this. Thanks!!
Hope you liked it!
Cant wait one of the few english aes releases i own.
Great game. Just bought this game for the xbox one along with Blazing star and Pulstar.
Do they all play well on the Xbox? Thinking of getting those three also for my series X 👍
@@accychap5533 Yes they play just like the arcades
I had Last Resort as a teen in the early 90s on AES. Me and my friend tried back then to complete it but never was good enough. I did not know you had to play through twice for a good ending!?!
Keep up the good work, these reviews are great and I always look forward to the next one.
One of my favorites! Awesome job man!
Great video content dude because i have this game and didn't like it until this video so now i'm happy that i play it 👍✌.
Love this game. Can't wait.
Nice, finally a good game for you to review haha. I was surprised when I learned how early this game was released in the neo geo life. It is way beyond anything else on the system at the time.
Yay, it's back! I always really enjoy these retrospectives, and i'm curious to hear about Eightman next, seeing how that got skipped on ACA Neogeo for whatever reason (licensing, maybe?)
Definitely the licensing. Eightman didn't get an NGCD release either.
Awesome as always man :)
Another great episode man 👍
Great review of a great game. Your Neo Geo reviews are some of the best I've seen on UA-cam. Interesting to hear about the differences between the released version and the prototype. I used to own this on AES and NGCD but ended up selling them. Still enjoy playing it on Mame.
Great review 👏
Awesome review. For me, the cart version of the soundtrack is much better, fits the game's atmosphere with its industrial/rock/synth style, percussions are louder too. Also, that part on stage 2 where it gets filled with bullets, just use the red pod, charge it and it will destroy enemies up and down.
Great editing and writing as always. I especially liked the part about the prototype, never heard of it.
The only doubt I have is about your walkthrough : I know the game pretty well (1cc the first loop) and imho you don't use the charge shot enough. It would keep you away from trouble with the turrets in stage 2 if you had the ground unit. Neither does the stage 3 boss last long with the charge shot, in fact I've never seen it moving until today ! For me a relentless yet wise usage of the charge shot is the key to success in Last Resort ;)
Fully agreed. I know I under-utilize it. This is far from pro level walkthrough. If you want that, watch a longplay. However, I did mention in the video that the the charge shot didn't work on the turrets like I'd hoped.
I love the most when we talk about the developers and who made what outside of that game.
I wonder if there is interviews of those guys anywhere ?
Well, very good work !
I was looking for interviews, and was surprised I couldn't find a whole lot on this one.
Great job. I always look forward to these videos and learn a lot. Keep it up! You are doing a phenomenal job.
Thanks! Glad you like them! I hope to educate as well as entertain.
Awesome review! I spent a lot of time getting the 2 loop 1 cc last month and got to know the game really well but I haven't played the prototype or the CD version. Next time I play through it I will give those a try. Thanks for the psa, I didn't even know the prototype existed. I noticed that some of the prototype sprites are different.
I noticed that the AES version is actually harder than the MVS version, as the enemies take more bullets to kill.
Last Resort has turned into one of the games I like to fire up and 1cc casually. Once you route out the game it is not hard, at least the first loop. This is partly because the game is so short and I like that. For comparison think of Thunder Force 4. I love Thunder Force 4 but that game is so long it is intimidating to think about trying to get a 1cc after not playing it for months.
I have a walkthrough video with commentary on my channel if anyone is interested.
Hey there. Congrats about the 1CC. That's amazing!
Can you confirm your difficulty settings in the MVS soft dips and the main AES menu? I wasn't aware of any difference, but there should be corresponding difficulty settings between the two.
Definitely give the proto and CD versions a try.
@@BasementBrothers I'm playing the "normal" difficulty in aes (the menu refers to difficulty as "level"). For mvs when I go into unibios v4 all the dips are disabled and when I pull up the MiSTer menu it says all dips are disabled--everything is set to what the MiSTer default is.
I noticed that some enemies sponged more bullets in the aes. A good example of this is the phallic water snake monsters in stage 2.
@@riggel8804 The "MVS" difficulty on the AES should match the default on the MVS version. Usually difficulty level 4 on games with difficulty 1-8 or 3 on games with 0-7.
Nice thorough review. I’ll be playing a bit of last resort later this day 👍.
I've never really played any shooters until I recently played this game and thought it was super hard. If I have the time I'd like to give it another go.
Not being good at shooters, I haven’t really tried this one but your great review has me wanting to give it a go.
You should!
Excellent work, as always! Oh, man, 8-Man up next? I recently replayed that one and, uh... oof. That's a rough one.
These are always cool.
Awesome!

Great review very comprehensive.. may I add the cover was done by legendary Shinkiro but I’m not sure it was his typo on the back.
Up until a decade ago you could pick up a complete Last Resort Home-Cart for around $80. No one wanted it. Then UA-cam influencers happened...
The price really seems to have gone up. $250-350 for a loose MVS cart really shocked me. I am building my NGCD collection back up, and bought the NGCD for around $100 for this video.
1:20 Talking about Mr Jake?
Yep. We collected our MVS carts together.
You boys be quiet down there.
You ro- tate the screen
I don't get the joke with the screen orientation changing.
Google "tate" in regard to arcade shooters/shmups.
I just got this game for my Neo Geo CD after watching this video and while I’m finding it really hard, I gotta say I love it!
