  • Neo-Alec's Neo Geo Reviews is now known as "Neo Geo Generation." New name, same host, same content.
    The next game in our Neo Geo survey, NGH-025, Eightman, from Pallas is based on a 1960's anime and manga series. How does the game hold up?
    We're going through the Neo Geo collection, with footage from real hardware, not emulators. Check out top games to play on the Neo Geo console, Neo Geo Mini, Neo Geo MVSX hack, or Neo Geo MVS cabinet.

    Pallas IS SNK. Proof: 2020 Super Baseball was developed by Yasushi Adachi (Rocket Queen) & Team Galapagos. Who a little later went on to create the brilliant Samurai Shodown.

    8Man After classic animé right there; awesome soundtrack too! I wanted to be a cyborg so much after seeing it on the Sci-Fi Channel when I was around 13 years old!

    Honestly surprised you even gave this one a tentative recommendation. I played it last year on my Darksoft kit, remembering it from childhood, and... I found it pretty rough. Like you said, a lot of cheap hits, a really cheap final boss. It just feels like it needed another coat of spit 'n' polish.

    • @BasementBrothers

      That was my initial impression, but was able to do much better after learning most of the enemy patterns.

    Admittedly, I didn't know about this game when it first came out. My first introduction to the series was with 8-Man After. But I did eventually got to play this game. And in my opinion, while its nothing groundbreaking, its a fun game, and a nice addition to 8-Man's legacy. But I think 8-Man needs to make a return to the spotlight. He hasn't had a new entry in ages.

    Eightman was being played on a Neo Geo AES console in the 1993 HBO television movie 'Strapped'.

    Hachirou makes sense 😊Hachi = 8 -> Hachirō, the eight one.
    Names ending in ~rō were popular during the Shōwa era for men.
    Ichirou (一郎) for the first born, Jirou (次郎) for the (litterally) next one, Saburou (三郎) for the third etc.
    Azuma (東), lit. "the east" might be a reference to Tōkyō?

    8Man was the first game I saw running on an MVS cabinet in an arcade, Its the game that sticks in my mind when I think of NEO-GEO in the arcade. I played it for an hi-score competition once and got really into it. I also enjoy a game on 8Man in my cab. Thanks for the review, I enjoyed it :)

    I miss the early generation Neo Geo game voice over announcer. That would be great to be able,to get him back again if he is still alive. The KOF XV announcer is ok. Not as iconic as his predecessor from back then though.

    Interesting tidbit about the English release of the cart is most of them have a second sticker over the Japanese label on the cart.

    "This isn't your lame baby boomer 8Man". hahaha. That part got me. I loved the 8Man after anime as a kid. They used to play it on the Sci Fi channel.

    • @BasementBrothers

      It is the nineties and there is time for... Klax. Er... I mean, violent anime trying to be adult and edgy.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804 3 роки тому +3

      @@BasementBrothers I grew up on that stuff and never thought of it as edgy. That was just how anime was-masculine, humorless and violent (with excellent art). The word "edgy" didn't exist back then but by today's standards it is edgy. My zoomer son and I both watch anime and I have heard him refer to my old stuff as "edgy" on more than one occasion.
      According to my son, everything pre 2000s, can be regarded as "boomer". Apparently the term doesn't just refer to the generation born after WW2 but now is used to refer to all media consumed by millennials and previous generations. To the new generation, we are all either boomers or zoomers.

    • @BasementBrothers
      @BasementBrothers  3 роки тому +4

      Yeah, you are right on the first point.
      On the second point, the new generation is wrong.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804 3 роки тому +2

      @@BasementBrothers That's what I told him! I tried explaining to him the differences between Boomers and gen x etc. But he just grinned and told me that was, "boomer talk". I think it's too late, zoomers have appropriated the term Boomer and it means something different now. It's kind of like what the gay community has done with the rainbow. I like rainbows but I am not going to wear a rainbow shirt anymore. It's too late, they own the rainbow.

    • @BasementBrothers
      @BasementBrothers  3 роки тому +2

      There's no point -- can't fight change. Also, I hope that everyone will still wear their old rainbow shirt, regardless of orientation.

    I LOVE Eightman! I mean...LOVE everything about the whole franchise of him Alec. At one time, I thought Eightman was the greatest character, Anime, and Manga that existed out from Japan. When I found out that Eightman was coming to the Neo-Geo, I was at my local arcade for the distributor to insert the cartridge into one of the MVS units it owned. I made sure I was the first to play it. 8^)
    Another top-notch video bro. I had it with popcorn and soda-pop to see it. 8^)

    One of my favorites of early NeoGeo. When I got my own home arcade some years ago, I sought this out as a pizza place old favorite. Long story short, found a copy online, was sold as maybe just the game or game and marquee as part of it was in an image. Dude ships it in a solid box, a box when i removed the butcher paper revealed a black and white 8! I got the entire kit, never seen one posted since for sale when I did check. The game may not be A tier, but it's a solid B, a fantastic B game. :)

    Also, its worth mentioning that as recently as 2020, there was a crossover between 8-Man and Cyborg 009 in manga form; "8-Man vs. Cyborg 009". But they should do more for 8-Man besides that. They could adapt the Infinity manga as a TV series. I know there's a small chance of that. But its one way to revive the series for today's generation.

    I don't think the instructions are wrong in calling A the "punch" button. Clearly among Eightman's many cybernetic powers is the ability to punch with his feet.

  • @jackylee5850
    @jackylee5850 2 роки тому

    Eight Man was cheap, very much so. Large sprite equals larger hit box. But perhaps what's most cheap is how fast the timer runs down. For example, in the second last stage leading up to the stage boss you start on a slow ascending elevator constantly being attacked, your timer starts at 99. The elevator doesn't move any faster if you defeat each enemies that comes on screen quickly. By the time you reach the stage boss Cyber, you have only 18 seconds left to fight a giant mechanical face that takes up half the screen moving in a erratic pattern

    You mention Mr. Roboto as if that was Styx's biggest hit or the only hit they ever had, when it wasn't. Their biggest hit was the power ballad, Babe. And they had a ton of other classic songs that were also massive hits.

    • @BasementBrothers
      @BasementBrothers  3 роки тому +3

      I did not intend to minimize Styx as a band. I was only mentioning that particular single. It's actually a good song too -- It's a shame most people only seem to remember the "Domo Arigatou Mr. Roboto" part.
