You know the CPS2 is one of the best arcade platforms when games like Eco Fighters and Marvel Super Heroes is at the bottom of the list. Capcom really was the king of Arcades. The CPS1/2/3 and Neo-Geo are forever going to be the platforms that gave me the most enjoyment in the Arcade and now at home.
Not sure how you could possibly rate the first street fighter alpha over Alpha 2. Even with nostalgia goggles on, Anyone can clearly see Alpha 2 is superior in every way possible.
For me, SFA2 is my favourite of the 3, and is up there with SSF2T and MVC as my top 3 Capcom fighters. I've never been able to quite put my finger on why I like 2 best, just personal preference. Anyway, I've been absolutely loving all these longer compilation videos Kim! Thanks for keeping us entertained on lockdown! Stay safe.
I completely understand you too =) Although I'd say that more objectively SFA3 is the better game, SFA2 is the one I've replayed the most. It seems the most balanced of the 3 ^^
@@PixelsLtd well, I guess I can call myself that as well. :D Always tried to be the best fighting game player among my friends, but never competed in tournaments or played too much with random people at the arcades. And although I understand fighting game lingo and why some characters are OP and stuff like that, I'm probably not nearly competitive on any modern fighter ^^ But I've played pretty much all of the oldies from Capcom, SNK and other brands. It is my favorite game genre for sure =)
Cool review! I'd add that there are actually 42 CPS2 games. The 4 you missed were: - Vampire Savior 1 & 2 (yes, there are 5 unique games in the Vampire/Darkstalkers series) - Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha (different from Zero 2 and Alpha 2. Thanks for the wonderfully confusing naming, Capcom!) - Super Street Fighter 2: Tournament Battle (unique from "New Challengers" in that it supported linking 4 arcade cabinets for a *drum roll* tournament battle). If you have any questions about CPS2, feel free to reach out. I actually own the complete 42 piece set :)
For anyone who isn't familiar, Vampire 1 & 2 are just Vampire Savior with a few characters removed and the Darkstalkers 2 characters (Donovan, Huitzil/Phobos, Pyron) added back in. And Zero 2 Alpha (also called Alpha 2 Gold in the US) was an attempt to rebalance Alpha 2 for competitive play that didn't really work and never caught on.
@@joshthefunkdoc Vampire Savior 2/Hunter 2 also have some system changes coming from Savior 1 (like a new Dark Force mechanic replacing the original one, air chain combos limited to Dark Force too, it's harder to escape from throws by jumping - and they also made Oboro Bishamon playable and added a "secret character" of sorts called Marionette, although she's just a mirror match mode where you always turn into your opponent), although like Zero 2 Alpha those changes were mostly rejected.
"A-ism, V-ism, and... Jism" 😂 Nice to see Mighty Pang so high up. Love Alien vs Predator, and Cadillacs & Dinosaurs is my favourite arcade beat 'em up too.
George Kamitani was an artist on Tower of Doom and Shadow Over Mystara. If you liked those games check out Dragon's Crown on the PS3 and PS4 he was the director and an artist and writer on that game as well and it's pretty much the spiritual successor to Capcom's D&D series.
I love a bit of Marvel Superheroes.... great memories of University in the mid to late 90s! My mate and I nearly finished Heroes of the Lance on the ZX Spectrum, but we didn't pick up the Macguffin before running to the right and it told us we lost...
I actually love playing "Night Warriors: DarkStalkers' Revenge" just a bit more than "Vampire Savior" due to gameplay being much more simpler to pull off special moves while also having quite a bit of nostalgia after playing it on the Sega Saturn. Not only that, but it's also several times superior to its predecessor "DarkStalkers: The Night Warriors", so I'm pretty disappointed that you would only place it as Number 25 on your list.
So you're among the few uploaders I've seen who actually *refer* to Cyborg Justice, and for that, I appreciate it. Tons of nostalgia associated with it.
You are wrong about Mega Man Power Battles 1, you can select the stage, it is random select if you don't time the attack button press. When it highlights a stage, press the attack button at the right time. Selecting the stages in order IS essential to getting the highest score.
1944 is a great addition to the Final Fight Arcade 1up cabinet. I play mine all the time. It's strange how I think I am bored of it, then I go back all over again. So addictive!
thank you. this does help me through these tough times. i'm an american and british gaming channels have been a big part of keeping me sane these past few weeks (partially because it started from such different places and is fascinating). good luck with your country, ours is having a rough time, and my area is the hot spot right now. hopefully things will level out but they're telling us its a bad idea to even go grocery shopping this week. i may be drinking during this video
hopefully capcom will release more of these in the future whether that be under the capcom arcade stadium, marvel vs street fighter collection, or darkstalkers collection
Capcom should make a new "Dark Stalkers" game , they abandoned the poor series. Oh well can't wait for SF Alpha 1 and Dark Stalker On the Sega Genesis/MD coming out
Yeah you can tell that the creators were fans of d&d and wanted the game to be not just fun but also loyal to the source material like the troll boss is weak to acid or fire' the dragon use their fire attack only thrice and spells do nothing on the final boss
Just seeing some of these fighting games on display, especially Super Turbo, gives me the urge to pull up Fightcade and get some rounds in. Thanks for the video and memories Kim.
Wonderful list, Kim! So much nostalgia pouring all over, it was an amazing trip through the catalogue of an arcade board I played a lot of as well =) Of course, I'd place a few games on different places, but it's like you mentioned, in some cases it all boils down to personal preference and experience with the games. I'd rank SFA2 higher than SFA, simply because it's one of those sequels that did everything right. I had already played and beaten SFA at the arcades (and loved it!), and I was oozing for excitement when I finally got a Saturn, and the first game I bought was SFA2. My expectations for an arcade experience were completely fulfilled, and more so. I can't say for sure that it's better than SFA3, although I do prefer it. MSHvs.SF was always my favorite of the 3 Vs. games, but my arguments for it are even flimsier than those for SFA2 ^^
Thank you for recognising the awesomeness that is Gigawing! It and Progear saw plenty of attention from me in the arcades, but while I thought the theme and audio-visuals were superior, the former had it down for much more satisfying and addictive gameplay. The placings of the SFA series are kinda inverse for me, though. Sure Alpha 3 is certainly hard to beat in content and gameplay variety, but the first two (even if I think the first one's name describes more a dev stage than a prequel) are just works of art compared to it.
Alpha 3 is the least "Street Fighter"-feeling game in the entire mainline series, so i don't blame you there. A good chunk of its mechanics are more associated with anime fighters anymore, haha
Very nice to hear your views of the games of the CPS1 and CPS2. They're such good arcade platforms, and I was just doing some reading up on them and playing a bunch of CPS games specifically a few months back. As I mentioned on the last video, I'm a big fan of Dynasty Wars, so that's one I go back to a lot. I also finally played the Mega Man arcade games. CPS2 is interesting because there's so much quality that good games will end up low on any list. I didn't love the direction Capcom took with most of their fighters starting with the CPS2, but they're well made. I became an SNK in those days. So that eliminates a lot of CPS2 games for me, but it's still a great hardware platform. Battle Circuit, Armored Warriors, and Alien vs. Predator are all fantastic beat-em-up games that I love. AVP is interesting because of the large move set and standard, limited projectile weapons. It's fast paced, but more defensive than other games. It leads to amazing scenarios where my character has no energy left, yet its still possible to manage a huge swarm of aliens and survive long enough without taking any hits to reach some food. I've been surprised by some of predicaments I've gotten out of. I mentioned Mega Man in the CPS1 video. I read about it and it appears that the CPS2 was the lead platform, so I agree with your decision to save it for this one. I believe even the Q-Sound logo was left in the ROM for the CPS1 game. The CPS1 version loses some voice samples, but it mostly the same. While I thought Capcom could be hit or miss with FM synthesis, I like the FM versions of the music in the CPS1 version and it's nice to be able to choose between the two versions of the game. I think the CPS2's PCM sound is great as well.
Awesome video. Have an arcade machine running mame and this got my excited to go check some games. Also, can't wait for you to do a worst to best for Neo Geo MVS!
I have very fond memories of playing Marvel vs Capcom and Street Fighter Alpha 2 at my local retro game store. After buying a few classic PS1 games, I'd slap in a few quid to play a few rounds of MVC1.
I couldn’t have said it better myself! Every time I’d drift off and daydream about other titles as I’d be watching this Kim would just lay them right out as if he were reading my mind!! I didn’t think he’d mention the deluxe ps2 edition of SFII and yet he did hahaha BTW I gotta say Darkstalkers series seems somewhat underrated.. It plays silky smooth and I’m really glad I’d discovered it
Not entirely true. For an individual release on a major home console, mobile app or PC no. But capcom officially sanctioned a "capcom home arcade" with beefy Arcade sticks and buttons to plug and play. It had AVP as one of the gamesWasn't cheap at £179 but not as expensive as some home arcades at £300 either. Bit cheeky as it had "final burn" which is MAME pirate software as the operating system! On that note a USB playstation or console pad is compatible with windows and Emu Paradise you can download a MAME and AVP ROM!
I had the same experience playing the OG Darkstalkers. I played it at a local pizza hut and I usually mained Frank. The food was probably better than what you had haha
Just call them shooters it makes sense to call them that shame all the fools messed that up callibg every Third person shooter and First person shooter the same name.
I think Battle Circuit's biggest problem is that it was pretty obscure back in the day, so most people don't have the nostalgia for it so it looses a few points. But yeah, it is up there with AvP for me for those sweet combos and special moves
I would still put SOR2 as better, BC is very good though. However if you liked Battle Circuit, have you played Guardians Denjin Makai 2? it's bloody fantastic.
Yeah I don't understand that at all. Battle Circuit has juggling, combos, powerups, and RPG-like progression that make most beatemups seem downright vanilla. I don't get the point of ranking things mostly by what he happens to have nostalgia for but then adding in things he didn't play till recently, but then he doesn't give a fair shake to things like Battle Circuit and doesn't point out what makes it so different
I owe you, Kim. I think I've found the arcade game I played years ago, was really impressed with and never found again. Until now. Maybe. I think. I really can't remember too well! I'll check later...
Dimahoo is actually the third in the Mahou Daisakusen series - in fact its called Great Mahou Daisakusen. Also I remembered playing Dimahoo and Progear every Halloween season.
According to a friend that used to work at Capcom Super SF II Turbo was what they intended to release when they released Super. They were running behind and released the Super we got.
Shocking you got rid of SFA2 on Snes, even as a kid when it came out it held its value, I remember even in 1998 unboxed used copies going for £15-£25 and the rare time I saw them in the early 00's it was at least £30 for a unboxed or boxed version. I was desperate for it as a kid as loved SF games and gaming in gernal.
There can be only one at the top. Sf2 turbo . Over 20 years of blood , sweat and tears!. And HYPE!!!!. Don’t forget to do cps3 so we can talk about the masterpiece third strike!.
I never thought anyone could make a list of 95% fighting games interesting, but you’ve done it! Any chance you could make a similar countdown for Atari System 1 and 2?
20:30 "I never used to win too much in Street Fighter. That is when I actually got on and the bigger kids didn't tell me to, quite literally "FUCK OFF" during a match. He he. Good times."
Feel your pain there Kim re’ SFA2 on the SNES (Unbelievable conversion of a fantastic game btw) as had to sell mine a few years ago, along with the majority of my games collection, following my divorce 🤬. Such a bum. Kept my arcade stuff though CPS2 boards included 🙌. Congratulations on another awesome video!
Oh mate - i feel ya... i had a massive collection mainly sega (all of them) and what not and had to sell it all due to losin my license - as i was a taxi driver....that hurt. Especially when i sold it for cheap. Granted it wasnt mint as well used! But i had rare stuff that i didnt even know was valuable like the demo of keio flying squadron on mega cd (and full game) - all i can say is thank god for emulation. I only have a cheap copy pandoras box 6s and my phone these days....sigh....oh well.
Order Of Magnitude - The Paranormal & Personal Ah mate that sucks. I’d been collecting since the mid 90’s so had amassed a fair bit but needed a quick sale. Kept a few bits (3ds collection, Xbox 360 and thank god my arcade stuff and crt’s) but let the lot go for £20K which to be fair was way less than it was worth and certainly way less than that lot would be worth now even 3 years on. Lesson to be learned = don’t get married!
Different country and different arcade cabinet, but I remember a Burger King that had a Simpsons arcade game... that NEVER worked, or was even plugged in. I still go to that BK, but that thing was gone by the time I moved near it. Other than that, I've never really seen a fast food/take out place with arcade games or video games unless they're in a rest stop area.
Awesome list, but the first Darkstalkers higher than the second one? That's like saying that plain vanilla Street Fighter II is better than Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Very similar gameplay systems with more characters, improved balance, much better special moves system, much better music... Just weird. Nostalgia was way too strong there! I do agree with placing X-Men CotA above Marvel Super Heroes though! MSH didn't expand the roster enough and removed some stellar CotA characters, so I always considered it a sort of side game instead of a true successor to CotA. But still, amazing list, and I am glad that you're covering the legacy of the amazing CPS systems! Oh, and yes, Jon Talbain is the best Darkstalker... until Jedah, but Jedah came later!
This is awesome thanks as always Kim! Cripes I hate to admit this but I've never played a single game on this list holy cow. Maybe I should get into emulation but I have no experience with that. :
I was literally gonna ask if you would consider doing videos on some of the Sega arcade boards before the video ended, looking forward to the System 16 video! Maybe consider doing a video on the almighty Sega Model 2 someday?
I actually like X-Men vs. Street Fighter the best of all of the Capcom crossover fighting "series", just something about it jibes with me. I do love MvC too...though I played it on Dreamcast way more than in arcades. I'd have put Cyberbots a bit higher on the list, personally, as well as Mars Matrix. Also, I thought Progear was CPS3 before this video, but I was wrong.
You can’t rank Alpha 2 below the 1st one which is a rushed and unfinished product. In many ways Alpha 2 is the best game of the 3. It’s a lot less broken than A3 for instance...
I kept thinking Capcom vs SNk and Marvel vs. Capcom were CPS2 boards. Oh well. It would be interesting if one day you made a top NeoGeo arcade game list.
@bigevilworldwide1 I don't know about your sources, but considering how Mega Man 11 came from the same place RKOs often do and still ended up doing pretty damn good, maybe you're talking a tad out y'er arse.
I personally greatly enjoyed Super Gem Fighters (aka Pocket Fighters). Incredibly easy to learn, hard to master. I personally hated SSF2T, because of the absurd amount of cheating the computer opponents do. Btw, what's the difference between SSF2T and HSF2?
SSF2 Turbo and SF3 3rd strike are still absolutely essential fighters. I know Alpha has it's fans but i've always found them to be a bit stodgy in the gameplay department compared to the previously mentioned games...plus i'm not a massive fan of the overly anime inspired art design.
i liked the CPS1 video, but the CPS2 is a much better system.I rank mars matrix much higher, i brought it . One thing i like about the cps2 shumps is a lot of them didn't need to rotate the screen in the cabinet (70 kg or something like that in a new astro).
My top 5 would be:
5 - X-Men vs Street Fighter
4 - Alien vs Predator
3 - Street Fighter Alpha 2
2 - Super Street Fighter II Turbo
1 - Vampire Savior

alpha 2 is preferred competitively by a ton of people, alpha 3's v-ism is pretty broken and turns a lot of people off

Marvel Super Heroes was my personal fave. Spent so much time on that game with its brilliant gem system.
Dimahoo is actually the third in the Mahou Daisakusen series - in fact its called Great Mahou Daisakusen. Also I remembered playing Dimahoo and Progear every Halloween season.
Dimahoo is pretty good, but I think the original Mahou Daisakusen is best. Battle Garegga and Armed Police Batrider are pretty asskicking though.
According to a friend that used to work at Capcom Super SF II Turbo was what they intended to release when they released Super. They were running behind and released the Super we got.
great series so far! Thank you and please keep going
YES! One of the best arcade systems ever, gold mine of 2d fighting greatness.
Honestly, for me the best of the bunch was MVC, by far the best looking, most addictive of the bunch. Also loved AVP in the arcade back in the day...
There can be only one at the top. Sf2 turbo . Over 20 years of blood , sweat and tears!. And HYPE!!!!.
Don’t forget to do cps3 so we can talk about the masterpiece third strike!.
thanks for the video
Such an amazing platform, so many great titles.
I never thought anyone could make a list of 95% fighting games interesting, but you’ve done it! Any chance you could make a similar countdown for Atari System 1 and 2?
XMen COTA was amazing in 94. It's still awesome
I really do love Alien vs Predator. That game is so fun. Also, anyone who plays as anyone but the predator has something wrong with them.
As someone who likes robots, I like Phobos/Huitzil the most in the Darkstalkers series.
I remember playing #30 in a laundry matt when I was really young
They had that game and some kind of shooter maybe the first Contra
Awesome video
Great video. But nobody talks about STRIDER 2 from the arcades. A great game.
Lol.... ruffled feathers. Thanx kim.
I NEARLY bought Street Fighter Alpha 2 for snes when it was released but I opted for Donkey Kong Country 3 instead, they were both £60 at the time
Lived sfa3 on ps1. My all time favorite fighter.
Your vids, along with other Tubers, ARE a big help Kim. Can't thank you enough for the distraction
Yep I'm one of those idiots that got rid of all his games over time 🤦🏻♂️
As long as you double down instead of getting sucked into the cycle of paying money to get the same games again.
Buy a rg350.... problem solved..... id wait for the price to go back down tho......
27 is actually a variant of Shisen Sho, which is hugely addictive.
Brilliant. A new vid!!!!
It's subjective, but I'd put Battle Circuit way higher up in the list. I consider it to be among the top 3 of the genre.
You can’t rank Alpha 2 below the 1st one which is a rushed and unfinished product. In many ways Alpha 2 is the best game of the 3. It’s a lot less broken than A3 for instance...
I think the new challengers is the most balanced of all.
Another awesome list, I love Puzzle Fighter!
I kept thinking Capcom vs SNk and Marvel vs. Capcom were CPS2 boards. Oh well.
It would be interesting if one day you made a top NeoGeo arcade game list.
Marvel vs Capcom 1 is a CPS2 game. CvS 1 & 2 and MvC 2 are on the Naomi hardware.
I still wonder why Capcom haven't made another Mega Man fighting game featuring all the different Robot Masters. It seems a no-brainer.
@bigevilworldwide1 I don't know about your sources, but considering how Mega Man 11 came from the same place RKOs often do and still ended up doing pretty damn good, maybe you're talking a tad out y'er arse.
Your voice really sounds like the English version of the German scientist, Dr Edward Richtofen in the COD black ops zombies.
Cheers Kim;)
XvSF or MvC are my two favorites. And it still bothers me that AvP never got a home release.
Thanks for the video.
What happened to your live stream of Metroid ?.
Amazing! Neo geo next please!!!
SSF2 Turbo and SF3 3rd strike are still absolutely essential fighters. I know Alpha has it's fans but i've always found them to be a bit stodgy in the gameplay department compared to the previously mentioned games...plus i'm not a massive fan of the overly anime inspired art design.
Ring of Destruction is the best sequel I played
Didn't puzzle loop 2 come BEFORE ZUMA
AWESOMENESS
its obvious you played 10 minutes of each game in mame before ranking them.
i liked the CPS1 video, but the CPS2 is a much better system.I rank mars matrix much higher, i brought it . One thing i like about the cps2 shumps is a lot of them didn't need to rotate the screen in the cabinet (70 kg or something like that in a new astro).
I prefer CPS-1 the games have more charm I think
Capcom should hire Arc System Works to do Darkstalkers IV
