We all know the story by now, or at least you should! When Metallica formed in 1981 because Lars sucked at Tennis, he teamed up with James Hetfield who were both obsessed with bands such as Motorhead, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath to name a few.
The pair mutually bonded over their love for Heavy Metal and also shared a dream of becoming Rock Stars one way or another. Lars and James wanted to create their own version of heavy metal, but faster, angrier and more aggressive than the traditional sounds of Sabbath and others.
As history shows, Metallica would become one of a handful of bands that would go on to pioneer a new genre called Thrash, and during their early years a young red headed guitar wizard known as Dave Mustaine would contribute greatly to their early success. Some would even argue that Metallica simply wouldn’t have even made it without Dave Mustains early contributions and influence.
Metallica’s first record, Kill Em All, released in 1983 was raw, powerful and by all accounts, Thrash. It is without doubt one of the earliest Thrash records ever released. And the same can be said for their second LP, Ride The Lightning, in 1984.

Megadeth - The Sick, The Dying...And The Dead! Order the new Megadeth album now: amzn.to/3OrNdm8
Obviously the records Megadeth put out in the 90s we're not Thrash. The point was they were better than Load and Reload. I don't think the world will end because I said "Thrash".
Let's get some things straight shall we...
    1. Not once in this video did I say Metallica wrote Mechanix. Nor did I say they wrote The Four Horseman. What I did say was, and I quote: "he [Dave] also decided to record his own version of The Four Horseman, a song that appeared on Metallica's first record" which is exactly what he did and exactly what happened. The Four Horseman and Mechanix, are quite literally by definition, different versions of the same song. Not once did I imply Metallica wrote either version of the song before Dave Mustaine.
    2. I'm not sh**ing on Metallica, I literally produced an entire documentary dedicated to the band saying how incredible they are on this very channel. Did I say some negative things about them? Yes. That doesn't mean I think negatively about them as a band overall. Your interpretation of my words is your interpretation, not mine.
    3. A lot of you are missing the point of the video and becoming over-emotional because you think I'm attacking a band you are passionate about. I'm not attacking Metallica, I still love that band and I state that fact in the video, but they are not even remotely comparable as Thrash bands anymore, that's the entire point of the video. And again, there's nothing wrong with that, it's just an observation.
    4. Want to know why I produced this video? Over the last few years, I've had many a conversation with many people regarding music. One question that routinely appears is "Who is better, Megadeth or Metallica?" and I came to realise that you cannot compare these bands anymore within this context as they are now so different. Hence the title!
    5. For the people that keep point out "Metallica came before Megadeth"; yes they did but are we forgetting that Dave Mustaine was literally in the first iteration of Metallica? It's highly conceivable that Mustaine had more of an influence on Metallica's early sound than James and Lars combined.
Finally, I welcome civilised discussion. If you disagree with me, no problem, express your opinion.
I have loved Metallica and Megadeth for a long time and I will continue to do so. I will also continue to express my opinion however I see fit.
    Stay Metal

I get it, but Lemmy, Raven and Venom thought kill em all was nothing more than motorhead on speed, and that it wasn't until ride the lightning that they respected them as a band with their own identity and sound... Mustaine has tried hard to achieve what Metallica has with going commercial like them but somehow didn't have the guitar riffs to compete with no more Mr Nice guy, bread line, in my darkest hour, sweating bullets against Metallica's one and black album which commercially are better songs imo. And mustaine admitted practically his entire career was chasing the dream of being bigger than Metallica but commercially he couldn't do it

Considering that James Hetfield is one of the world's best rhythm guitar players it makes it a little more obvious that he knows exactly what he is really doing. Also the guys in Metallica all had huge album collections of underground Metal bands, and the majority of riffs have been lifted note for note from these obscure Metal bands. They did however incorporate a top 40 1970s hit song into Four Horsemen with Lynnerd Skynnerd - Suite Home Alabama. That probably opened the floodgates for internet nerds to research all Metallica songs.

I was thinking about this lately and why Metallica has had more commerical and mainstream success than Megadeth. Putting aside specifics of the music to me it comes down to the general ethos of both bands.
Metallica was always much more business oriented. Not taking away from their skill as they've made some fantastic music, but looking at their history you can see they were much more calculated to be successful than Megadeth.
Look at the names. Metallica is marketably brilliant in how it completely sums up what they're all about but also doesn't pigeonhole themselves and isn't offensive to anyone.
A name like Megadeth is a statement of purpose that would make parents gasp and anything veering from its implications can be off-putting to fans. You expect the loudest angriest music from a name like that.
Metallica fired Dave for being too chaotic, the "heaviest band in the world" fired their guitarist for being too extreme. And they were incredibly professional and consistent in their endless touring. Even with alcoholism, death of Chris, and James being lit up on fire they barely missed a beat to play a great set for the fans for decades.
Megadeth did tour a lot with some amazing shows and occasionally Dave would try to work with the biz but it's harder to maintain a consistent image, quality, and professionalism when you keep changing members with some constantly going in and out of rehab. And have even stated at a certain point they couldn't even perform well without shooting up. It didn't really seem like the business side of things was a focal point.
Metallica is the more presentable image of metal while Megadeth is the reality of it (for better or worse with how much turmoil it caused).
And before St Anger no one really knew how much dysfunction was behind the scenes of Metallica while with Megadeth's dysfunction was almost unintentionally part of the band's brand for awhile.
Dave originally mostly only cared about the music with being as complex, loud, and fast as possible. He flubbed hard when really trying to be mainstream and only did it to attempt to one up Metallica.
Metallica already understood what it takes to be mainstream and landed it with precision, while Dave just wasn't built for it; but he is perfect for the angst and aggression of thrash with the musical chops to back it up.
And if we do get into the music, personally having tried to learn to play songs from both bands Metallica riffs and solos are generally simpler (once again not a bad thing) than Megadeth who have more virtuosity.
It's easier to get and connect to a Metallica riff for the average listener (which I believe is by design), while Megadeth can take some time to appreciate bc of how complex it can be.
So Metallica slated itself as being the metal band for everyone; catchy riffs that hit hard with a more pleasant voiced singer (which makes their ballads way more palatable esp on ballads, even though I personally like Dave's singing). While I always found Megadeth to be a musician's favorite band.

That's a very good point, it's always fresh having someone that takes the time to articulate is opinion without go for "Metallica or Megadeth sucks". The points of the relation and the importance given to fans, the professionalism are very good points. Even in the tour that Metallica did with GnR everyone was talking about that, the difference between the two bands, specially James and Axl. And the voice as well, for me Dave's voice is a turning down, i just dont identify with it, in comparision the Hetfields 80's agressive, full of rage, but in the wright way is my all time favorite. But on the part of the simpler and easy to listen songs or complex ones, i kind of see it other way, specially untill the Black Album. I dont think Ride, Master or Justice where simpler albuns. What i see , and just an opinion, is that Metallica songs are in general better built. If you pick Holly Wars and Master, and isolate, just the riffs, just the solo, both amazing, but the structure of the songs, the melodical parts, the interludes (for me the writting and deliver by the singer), when you join all elements, sounds fluid and interesting in Metallica, and sometimes, in some Mega songs seemed like the riffs and solos where throwned to the song and theres not much connection. He has writtes an super fast solo, hard to play, but that doesnt seems to be oart of the same song. I think that Dave needed (he would hate this) to have someone like Lars (and having spent more time with Cliff and all the more classical and inovative stuff he brought) with him, not only because the business oriented mind, but also to make it different when piecing up a song. But i loved your view on it, sorry for my english. Cheers.

@@brunofreitas9314 Thank you! And that's a great point as well. Just look at "Four Horsemen" vs "The Machanix". Metallica's version is better (if you're judging by being more discernably memorable) structured on the same song that Dave wrote.
I think you're right they had a better ear for structure which makes them more palatable for the mainstream. Dave's is faster and looser. And Jame's voice is just more pleasant, he's a good singer while Dave just fits his music but not someone I'd choose to be singer in any other circumstance.
Dave and crew were much more chaotic musically than Metallica. But I do think Rust and Countdown made that much better with the addition of Marty.
But like in my post I believe Dave's goal even when "selling out" what to have more wildness to the music and when he tried differently didn't have it in him like Metallica.
And he didn't have the consistent line up of original members for decades to perfect the structure. It was usually Dave with and the bassist with a rolling cast of other collaborators.
It goes back to the mindset behind both bands. That Metallica were for lack of a better term, the pop boy bands of metal. But knowing how to toe the line before becoming too mainstream, until the 90s when that became more important.
I don't think either is better, even though I vastly prefer Megadeth personally. Just different skillets

I’d like to engage a subdebate on this topic: Kirk is a good guitar player, but Dave, Kiko, Marty, and Chris are all GREAT guitar players. Other commenters, I want hear what you have to say on this! But here are some of my arguments as to why I think Kirk is only a “good” guitarist:
-Some tracks on Kill ‘Em All had to be slowed down because Kirk couldn’t play Dave’s leads fast enough to keep up with the originally intended recording speed.
-Kirk had some great solos from Ride the Lightning through And Justice for All, but I’ve always quietly wondered how much of that was Cliff (the music theory guru in Metallica) helping Kirk develop as a lead player behind the scenes. [Even though he was deceased before it was recorded, Cliff had writing credits on some stuff on AJFA. He was, therefore, involved with composing its tracks to some extent.]
-Suddenly on the Black Album, Kirk gets lazy. Bob Rock consistently has to push Kirk to think outside the box, use more than just a handful of the same old scales to craft his solos, and actually PRACTICE before he comes in to record.
-No remarkable leads from Load or Reload. No solos at all on St. Anger (YIKES).
-Cue the wah pedal, which has become synonymous with Kirk’s name and brand. Plenty of that all over his solos on Death Magnetic and Hardwired, which had some decent leads, but they were by no means on par with what Kirk was doing in the 80s.
-Add in the increasing number of live performances where Kirk can’t hit the notes on his old solos.
-Oh, and lest we forget the “I had 200 new riffs recorded on my iPhone to contribute to upcoming albums, but I left the phone in a taxi cab, and it was stolen” story Kirk told a few years ago.
-Finish with Kirk’s recent solo release Portals, which was the most middle-of-the-road set of instrumentals I think I’ve ever heard.
Conclusion: Kirk is a good lead player, but not a great one. Less likely because of a talent deficit, and more likely (I think) because he isn’t self-motivated to push the boundaries and write innovative leads the way Dave, Kiko, Marty, and Chris all are. Chris was know for infusing jazz scales into his Megadeth leads; he was a prolific jazz guitarist before joining Megadeth. Marty needs no introduction; he has been known to fuse Eastern, Western, and neoclassical styles in his leads on his solo albums and Megadeth contributions. Kiko is a talented technical player and, like Chris, incorporates elements of jazz fusion into his Megadeth playing. And Dave, well, is Dave. The guy can shred.
Kirk, meanwhile, was a guy who was in the right place at the right time to get picked up by Metallica because Dave couldn’t control himself. He’s no Cliff, and he’s no Dave, but he’s made it this far with Metallica because he’s a good guitar player, and his personality is the PERFECT fit for the band. Kirk’s laid back, go with the flow, and gentle demeanor is the ideal counterbalance to James and Lars’ aggression (often aimed at each other). Add Dave in there, and that was just way too much combustibility in one band for it ever to succeed.

There are parallels to be drawn with Megadeth and Metallica in the 90's, though. They both more aggressively pursued a more commercial sound. Obviously Megadeth followed Metallica's footsteps with "Countdown To Extinction" in many ways, and went further commercial with the 3 subsequent albums, with "Risk" being arguably more commercially focused than either "Load" or "ReLoad" in many ways. Starting with "The World Needs A Hero" in 2001, however, the band has made a more concerted effort to blend their thrash roots with the more commercial leanings of "Countdown" or "Youthanasia" (both awesome records) for a sound that is a good pastiche of their overall sound, while Metallica post-Load has been on a mission trying to find their sound again, which they've arguably done with "Death Magnetic" forward, in a similar fashion where they're bringing in older thrash elements and combining that with a more groove-oriented sound they started with the Load/ReLoad pairing, and emphasizing more hard rock arrangements and song structures, whereas Dave and company flex a bit more of that thrash muscle, particularly on records like "United Abominations" or "Dystopia", for example. So while I don't think the 2 bands sound that similar now, and even in the 90's their styles diverged somewhat, it's hard to argue that they didn't take similar paths in terms of vying for commercial appeal, and softening their sound to a degree to broaden their appeal, and never quite returning to the sound that started them out in the first place.

100% Agree. I like most grew up Metalica fans and we honestly hated Megadeth because Dave was kicked out so as fans we didn’t even give him a chance. Then I attended a New Years party in the Hollywood Hills and they had metal playing but I didn’t know who the band was but I was blown away by the sick guitar work in the song which wound up being Holy Wars, then another song played and another so I asked the dude throwing the party who that was. He said dude are you serious that’s Megadeth. I was like fucken shit seriously. And he said yea but just don’t ask for Metalica songs. He was playing the Rust in Peace album. We partied for 3 days and when I was leaving my friend grabbed me and gave me the Rust in Peace CD and the rest was history. This was back in 1997 on new years. For years I was missing out because we thought we was supposed to hate Megadeth.

There's one major difference between the two. Megadeth is an enthusiast band, anyone outside of the metal scene doesn't know about them period. Metallica is a mainstream band, and has been since the 90s and they are more mainstream today than they ever have been. Metalheads respect Mustane due to his incredible talent and love for metal. Whereas we hate Metallica for becoming the exact opposite of what metal (and punk respectively) promotes. It's music that goes against mainstream media so for Metallica to become what they were once against really says it all....

I loved this so much, & agree on all counts. Metallica's early work - everything through "And Justice for All" (very much including the $5.98 ep) - was absolutely brilliant, and the Black album has to be respected. But at this point they've racked up just as many bad albums than good ones overall.
Megadeth on the other hand had only two real stumbling blocks for me personally - "Cryptic Writings" & "Risk" - and both of those efforts were still miles better than anything Metallica released during the same period.

Dr.John said "Right place... wrong time"
    NOPE!

Both bands are great, both have lots of mediocre to bad material. But Dave is a true bandleader not afraid to surround himself with an evolving cast of stellar musicians. And Dave’s a great rhythm player, not a super great soloist

      Better soloist than kirk lol.
But I'm really not a fan of Kirk's leads at all. James writes and plays all the good tallica solos.
Especially black album on, kirk just wah pedals and minor pentatonics. It's hard to believe he's joe satrianis student for how truly middling he is.

And, he's singing and rythm playing, and songwriting ...and soloing and hiring the best musicians without fearing to play with Poland, Firedman, kiko ...

I just listened to their new song and you were right!! Still thrashing!!! I am a Metallica fan too, but they definitely strayed far from their thrash roots where Megadeth did not....and I absolutely hated Lars's snare on St. Anger too!!! Who told him that sounded good???? Lol...

Learning to play guitar I got fade to black and master of puppets down at age 15 in 1986-87 but could not do Dave Mustaine at that time.

I've seen Megadeth numerous times, and I've seen Metallica a few times! The fact that Megadeth and Metallica both had one constant....Dave Mustaine!! Enough said!
