Love the episode, My favorite song of theirs is "In My Darkest Hour" however. Love the break down, and the compositional advice. Thanks man. Edit: Bring Dave Back!
My favorite Megadeth album will always be Peace Sells. The visceral quality and dark nature of the music. I almost feel it physically when I listen to it. Guitar shape? I'm a super strat guy. Ive been playing Ibanez rg's since 88. Nice little collection in the closet right now.
Dave Mustaine is possibly one of the best RIFF MAKER in the Metal world. He writes haunting and unforgettable music. But with Marty Friedman as the lead guitar Megadeths music really notch up to the max level. I mean Countdown to Extinctions harmony and underlying notes does create the feeling of Extinction.
It's a great song but not their best song, IMO. It's very accessible therefore it got lots of airplay which in turn made it their most popular song. IMO, Tornado of Souls is their best song but didn't get the airplay it deserved so it wasn't as popular.
Best song is completely subjective though you can't say a definitive best just your favourite I meen I could say I prefer good mourning black friday over tornado because of the intro and general song structure is abit more progressive or holy wars and hangar 18 I slightly prefer over tornado of souls aswell, it is one of there best though
Cool vid… I wish people (in general, not meaning you per se) would recognize that Music doesn’t come from theory, theory comes from music. Music theory is just a faster way to understand how to get to the sound you want. Knowing that a minor third tends to sound “sadder” or that it’s easy to compose around fourths and fifths isn’t something that’s hard to understand intuitively and repeat. If you understand Theory then you can understand that within your first few weeks of playing guitar… If you don’t it’s just gonna take you longer to figure it out. I think Kiko is right that Mustaine doesn’t know about Chord construction and modes, but that does mean he can’t alter basic rock chords like he did in Holy Wars or solo in Phrygian… Also, my vote for one of the best Megadeth songs that’s super underrated is “My last words/Next Victim” (the original title). I definitely think that’s one of the best songs Megadeth has done…
For real. And it translates into the difficulty to play. Pick any song off any album, its probably pretty hard to play. I'm not saying good writing and difficulty are intrinsically attached but its close. This is one of their easiest songs to play and to do it well is still a challenge I'd say even for advanced players.
Saw the thumbnail, and thought... 'Oh yeah, Symphony of Destruction'. Analysis is 1000% spot on. That great underlying E Phrygian. Chromatics handing off to leading tones, and then to resolution. The pre-chorus that sets the stage, but the song never quite gives you everything you're after until launching into the solo. That glorious solo that has that same kind of movement from other songs like "Kickstart Your Heart". Some rhythmic device (not a drummer) that makes you want to drive 200mph.
Megadeth was always my first choice Metal band. Pantera and Iron Maiden were close in technique. The most obvious thing was Megadeth had the best technique of the era.
Somehow, Dave continues to write great songs with amazing and original riffs after 40 years. And I'm not even that big of a Symphony of Destruction fan, I'd say it's maybe my 80th favorite Megadeth song
Man thanks for posting all this info. Never seen this channel before. Love love love Megadeth I don't know why. Very informative think that is most important. Great job. good work.
I've heard it said before that the flying v electric guitar was made to be played in the standing position only. Personally I would love to have Dave Mustaine's Holy Wars custom flying v electric guitar to hang on my wall.
I had a dream a few years back that Mr. Mustaine showed up at my house and gave me that personalized guitar for my birthday. Then he proceeded to teach me how to play Holy Wars. Before he left he signed the guitar. When I woke up later on I was not even sad that it was just a dream because it seemed so real. I still want that guitar like Wayne did in the first Wayne's World movie.
Oh snap, i just checked and it doesn't look like the collector's edition holy wars guitar is no longer available at the megadeth's website but you can get a miniature version for $30. That is even better cause I could put it next to my lil Chris Olivia guitar I bought at a TSO concert in New Orleans, LA. Now if you don't like that then i would say that you are not into heavy metal and therefore not my friend.
I was there in Reggio Emilia (Italy) 1992...one of best memories of my life...the last Monster Of Rock in Italy...It is incredible to think how five persons on that stage that day now are gone...NICK MENZA, JANI LANE, DIMEBAG, VINNIE and RONNIE...
I've been listening to Megadeth since the inception of the band and just introduced my new girlfriend to them. She can not stop listening to this song. But as someone who has listened to them forever, this song is a bit overplayed and a bit annoying. But ☢️ Megadeth ☢️ is the G.O.A.T.!!! 🐐 👍🎸🤘🥁✌️😎 🌬️🆒
@@averydoesstuff I agree. The issue is that there's a vocal chunk of the fanbase who sees Youthanaisa as Megadeth's "Black Album" (sell out) and they stomp Youthanaisa priase out pretty quick. I think Countdown and Youthanasia are perfect examples of making a mainstream album without selling your soul.

Pretty cool vid man. I love these, it's not just reactions and ripping on the music. We actually try to understand the music here, however good or bad it is lol. Man you got an ear that I don't man. Pretty good profession.
First Megadeth song I ever heard was In My Darkest Hour. It was at that point when I understood Megadeth was better than Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament combined.
The very first Megadeth song i heard is Killing is My Business.. and Business is good! It inspired me to pick up the guitar, best thing I’ve ever done over the last 3 years... all thanks to Tony Iommi and Dave Mustaine! Rock on!
I would honestly say they did it on the very next album with Train of Consequences. From the verse, to the pre-chorus, to the picking of the chorus part it’s as solid and catchy as symphony is, just with more intense vocals.
It’s popular because: - It’s good - It’s popular And yes, the second point there is intentional. It is the whole reason “influencers” are a thing. And they are not a new thing. The right person likes something at the right time and has the right crowd paying attention and it can go viral. People tend to like things that other people like. None of this meant to take anything away from the phenomenal talent of Mustsine. But it does explain Metallica a bit more.
I first heard this song from a guitar magazine back in the day, such a simple satisfying riff for a beginner to learn and it got me hooked on Megadeth, went out and bought Countdown just to hear the full song.
Great video break down of symphony of demolition Shred 🤘🏻! My favorite albums by megadeth are peace sells, rust and united abominations. I love the songs the conjuring devils island take no prisoners and play for blood. Black Friday is also a great epic from peace sells, and my favorite guitar shape is an explorer 🤘🏻
Yeah, I remember freaking-out on that song when the CD came-out and it became real popular, real quick with even radio runs (Montréal and Québec), but about 1 month later, I preferred ''Addicted to Chaos'', which is more complex and pretty much the peak of Dave Mustaine's snarly voice.
Seems like Kiko would know. I'm pretty sure Dave himself has admitted to really only understanding simple pentatonic box stuff. You can be a brilliant writer and not know a lick about theory. Its about having a good ear, and fucking around enough to find interesting sounds. At least thats how I interpret it having done years of writing without theory, and then learning theory later on.
You trolled me with the youthanasia thumbnail!!! The bass tone on that vid and yeah it's menza. Think that vid is 91/92. The live track of high speed dirt is epic from that gig🤘🤘🤘
You can say that Dave didn’t learn theory is the reason he was able to think out of the box. Many times people who are too stuck on theory are not that great of a composers in metal. Chris Broderick for instance
🔥MF is one of my Very Favorite guitarists!🔥! I appreciate your mad 😠 respect for him!🔥! Great video Shred...I jam to this song almost everyday...need to get that scale chord bible....JAM ON !🔥!
One thing about Megadeath their music is always stayed consistent in sound. I can’t say the same for Metallica. At one time Metallica was my favorite band but as time went on I grew to enjoy Megadeath much more.
I just stumbled across your channel and I got to say you are a cool dude. Ive always enjoyed looking at song structure and how it all fits together. The sounds, tones and melodies stuff like that. I did not go through university for music but self taught some theory along with playing music for 20yrs, I look forward to following your channel and learn some more. I really appreciate what you are doing here. Do I think Megadeth will write a better song, I doubt it. To me Megadeth was the RIP line up, Friedman, Ellefson and Menza. I feel like the most recent albums seem too cookie cutter formula. I'm not saying any of the songs are bad but lack the feeling/emotion/charm like the older albums. I never tried a flying V, would like to. I do really dig the explorer shape. I play an LTD-EX400 Cheers
That's my third favorite song on that album. Sweating Bullets and Skin o' My Teeth then this. This is a great record all the way around. Still a favorite.
I love these videos that dissect music! I've noticed how Megadeth play chords/arpeggios differently to say, Metallica, but I learned a new word today: Chromaticism! Now I know what that chord pattern is called! Thank you Shred, I'll be tuning in to more videos, muahahaha!

Sounds awesome - I'll have to check it out. I may have already, but I can't recall - there's so much on UA-cam. Lol
Love the episode, My favorite song of theirs is "In My Darkest Hour" however. Love the break down, and the compositional advice. Thanks man. Edit: Bring Dave Back!
wtf i thought you really will show us a youthanasia song
Yeah, that was the ultimate troll. And yet we both clicked on it. Mwahahahahahaa
yeah i thought maybe it's train of consequences
@@lokitus me to mwahaha
Shred. You’re killing it. I love the practical theory.
My favorite Megadeth album will always be Peace Sells. The visceral quality and dark nature of the music. I almost feel it physically when I listen to it. Guitar shape? I'm a super strat guy. Ive been playing Ibanez rg's since 88. Nice little collection in the closet right now.
the conjuring is such a crazy song from that reccord, my favorite on it. Chris Poland is also one hell of a guitarist
I still play drums to this to warm up when I practice. Been doing it for over 25 years. Same routine. Never gets old.
I never thought of SoD as one of Megadeth’s best songs. I wouldn’t even put input in their top 10.
I agree, but it is commercially one of the most successful...
Could not agree more, I have trouble getting it into the top 20 even. They have way too many better songs.
I have always loved the explorer body shape. I first saw it being played by Skwisgaar and then kept seeing variations of it and I just love them
I love both the explorer and flying v shape for their metal history, and the empowering feeling they give you when you play them.
One of your best videos bro!
Really liked when you pulled up your guitar and ran through the Phrygian progression!
👍👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Dave Mustaine is possibly one of the best RIFF MAKER in the Metal world. He writes haunting and unforgettable music. But with Marty Friedman as the lead guitar Megadeths music really notch up to the max level. I mean Countdown to Extinctions harmony and underlying notes does create the feeling of Extinction.
Awesome video, Shred.
It's a great song but not their best song, IMO. It's very accessible therefore it got lots of airplay which in turn made it their most popular song. IMO, Tornado of Souls is their best song but didn't get the airplay it deserved so it wasn't as popular.
The solo was too hot for radio
Best song is completely subjective though you can't say a definitive best just your favourite I meen I could say I prefer good mourning black friday over tornado because of the intro and general song structure is abit more progressive or holy wars and hangar 18 I slightly prefer over tornado of souls aswell, it is one of there best though
for me, their best songs are the more brutal ones from the newer albums, like headcrusher from endgame. just gets me pumping
Oh my God! Topo Chico is from my city!!
Love you videos. Greetings from Monterrey, Mexico 🤘
first, love you man.
Cool vid…
I wish people (in general, not meaning you per se) would recognize that Music doesn’t come from theory, theory comes from music. I think Kiko is right that Mustaine doesn’t know about Chord construction and modes, but that does mean he can’t alter basic rock chords like he did in Holy Wars or solo in Phrygian…
Also, my vote for one of the best Megadeth songs that’s super underrated is “My last words/Next Victim” (the original title). I definitely think that’s one of the best songs Megadeth has done…
For a guy that “ doesn’t know any theory” he wrote a lot of complex and legendary music
For real. And it translates into the difficulty to play. Pick any song off any album, its probably pretty hard to play. I'm not saying good writing and difficulty are intrinsically attached but its close. This is one of their easiest songs to play and to do it well is still a challenge I'd say even for advanced players.
@@davidschwartz3427 The arpeggios at the end of the solo are nuts..
I love the synyster gates guitar with the brown and black paint and all the knobs, bridge, ect are gold
They’re just elsewhere, we’ll see them again someday
I'hope so...
I'm ngl, I wish more people gave Youthanasia the recognition it deserves. Seriously feel that it's not talked about as much as it should be.
@@averydoesstuff agreed
@@averydoesstuff I agree. The issue is that there's a vocal chunk of the fanbase who sees Youthanaisa as Megadeth's "Black Album" (sell out) and they stomp Youthanaisa priase out pretty quick.
I think Countdown and Youthanasia are perfect examples of making a mainstream album without selling your soul.
i think they should bring back some songs from the 2000's back, they would sound killer in D standard. like headcrusher, or kick the chair
Where have you been all this time!!! You mean I get to hear your reactions and I get to learn music composition structure at the same time? Damn !!! Great channel sir!!!😎🤘 thank you
I think you should take a look at Head Crusher from Endgame. They still write songs “that good” in my opinion they just don’t hit the commercial success.
Also, when we gonna look at some Motörhead?
That's one of the worst Megadeth songs and the lyrics are total cringe.
head crusher is such a good song, love how angry the guitar is fr
@@dowens3781 sounds like any other megadeth song to me, with some of the best guitar work I’ve heard from that band before or since, but ok lol
Pretty cool vid man. I love these, it's not just reactions and ripping on the music. We actually try to understand the music here, however good or bad it is lol. Man you got an ear that I don't man. Pretty good profession.
7:35 that got me good
I love your analysis and this kind of reactions, I really enjoy it!
Something i love about Marty's playing is that he plays over the chord progression so well while being unique at the same time
First Megadeth song I ever heard was In My Darkest Hour. It was at that point when I understood Megadeth was better than Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament combined.
Testament can be pretty complex, but yeah, Megadeth >> Testament
What about Overkill? They are as prolific as Megadeth. And Anthrax gets better with age.
@@louiselockett2905 My order: Megadeth, Metallica, Testament, Overkill, Anthrax, Slayer
You are fucking brilliant, I've never had this much analysis fed to me, thank you so much
The very first Megadeth song i heard is Killing is My Business.. and Business is good!
It inspired me to pick up the guitar, best thing I’ve ever done over the last 3 years... all thanks to Tony Iommi and Dave Mustaine! Rock on!
Love your comments on Dave and Marty
I listened to Megadeth 666 times
I would honestly say they did it on the very next album with Train of Consequences. From the verse, to the pre-chorus, to the picking of the chorus part it’s as solid and catchy as symphony is, just with more intense vocals.
Shred has the be the best teacher on the platform. He explains things so concisely.
thank you Shred. your lessons are priceless.
It’s popular because:
- It’s good
- It’s popular
And yes, the second point there is intentional.
Thank you for this great Video!!I want David Ellefson back!! Stay safe and healthy!! Greetings from Germany, cheers Rainer
Train of Consequences always hypes me up, puts me in a good mood
Great song! Love it!
Great stuff, Marty's attire was top notch!
Nick Menza is definitely the one playing the drums, he died in 2016 much later after leaving the band in 1998.
I first heard this song from a guitar magazine back in the day, such a simple satisfying riff for a beginner to learn and it got me hooked on Megadeth, went out and bought Countdown just to hear the full song.
Shed you should totally do a video on Gus G, he has incredible songs such as "Fierce" or "Fire and the Fury" with his band Firewind. Muhahahah
Yeah man Gus G is great. He has great technique.
Yeah, I remember freaking-out on that song when the CD came-out and it became real popular, real quick with even radio runs (Montréal and Québec), but about 1 month later,
I preferred ''Addicted to Chaos'', which is more complex and pretty much the peak of Dave Mustaine's snarly voice.
1 month? lol
Topo chico yeah! Great video, greetings from Mexico!
Honestly? I love how well-rounded Symphony is, but I'd say he's surpassed it even by the time they dropped youthanasia. Even in catchyness
Just earned yourself a sub! Love love loveee the theory
Excellent explanation of an amazing music theory process. Thank you!
It’s crazy how through 90% of this song he sounds exactly like how he does on the studio recording in this live version
Get better headphones if you believe that to be the case. His voice is no where close to what he did on the record.
It’s crazy how deaf you are
You trolled me with the youthanasia thumbnail!!! The bass tone on that vid and yeah it's menza. Think that vid is 91/92. The live track of high speed dirt is epic from that gig🤘🤘🤘
Brian Wilson had no musical training but even Classical composers Revere him greatly.
Genius can't be explained.
Either you are or you aren't.
love you shred
I don't know, Risk, Cryptic Writings and World Needs A Hero were all pretty weak.
Topo Chico lol. That is some good stuff
Great video
I play an LTD-EX400
Cheers
Dave: world powers fall-all-all
Shred: man, Dave's really feeling himself today ❤
That's my third favorite song on that album. Sweating Bullets and Skin o' My Teeth then this. This is a great record all the way around. Still a favorite.
nice analysis man. new subsciber here!
Thanks Shred. If I don't learn something new about music, I learn an incredibly effective and fun way to teach my students. 🤘🏼
How about analyzing Hangar 18? There is so much going on in that song. It's a masterpiece in my opinion.
You should do She Wolf next, the change of key between the riff and the chorus is so sweet and interesting
I love these videos that dissect music! I've noticed how Megadeth play chords/arpeggios differently to say, Metallica, but I learned a new word today: Chromaticism! Now I know what that chord pattern is called! Thank you Shred, I'll be tuning in to more videos, muahahaha!

There’s hilarious footage back in the day of Layne Staley, doing the “watch him become a God“ line,
And the rest of AIC laughing….kind of making fun of Dave, but in a good natured way …and nailing Dave perfectly….. Layne Staley got his voice down to a T….. just picture Layne singing that line , and you can hear it
