Has Metallica saved their legacy?

  • Metallica’s legacy had started to feel somewhat tarnished by some of their latter albums and when Megadeth released their latest record The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!, I’d pretty much completely given up hope on Metallica ever releasing another decent record ever again. Until today…
    Pre-Order Special Vinyl here www.metallica.com/store/
    #Metallica #LuxÆterna #72Seasons
Lux Æterna is the latest single from the Metallica camp, and if you’re wondering, Lux Æterna is Latin for eternal light. An interesting choice of title for sure which is taken from a new LP called 72 Seasons set for release on Friday, April 14, 2023. This will also be Metallica’s 12th Studio album. So what does it mean for Metallica’s legacy?
Well, potentially we’re about to see Metallica return to their true Thrash & Metal roots. And I think I speak for everyone in the room when I say “That would be fucking epic”. Lux Æterna is certainly an angry song. It’s fast, it’s furious and it features some brutally classic Thrash lead from Kirk. James Hetfield seems pissed, the number one ingredient for Thrash, and Lars’ snare doesn’t sound like a trash can which is always a bonus.
If the rest of the new record is anything close to Lux Æterna then I think we’re all in for a treat and I for one am not only genuinely excited to hear it, but super stoked for Metallica. Makes you wonder what type of albums they would have released if they didn’t push towards hard rock in the 90s. If you want to pre-order 72 Seasons on special edition vinyl, I’ve included a link to Metallica’s store in the description.

I for me I think that the new song is still a let down. It's just another try at starting again from their beginnings at Kill'em All. The problem they're always going to have is Lars l. Lars is not the drummer he used to be. I almost think he has some kind of condition. MS or something. But he literally can't play any of the old songs. Or he doesn't attempt to. He's not THAT old. And that's ignoring the fact that when he wasn't actually OLD he still couldn't play his old stuff. As musicians, they are all Hetfield, Hammer and Truillo, capable of more, but they can't because... Lars. And that's just the way it's going to be. And that's why I haven't bought an album from them since I threw St. Anger out my car window, day ONE. And haven't looked back.

It's definetly impossible to Metallica to loose their legacy. This is coming from a death-hard-megadeth-fan, that hates everything Metallica did after the Black Album. They are the most commercially sucessfull band in the world, there's no discussion about that. Lux Æternal was pretty mid to me tbh, but I have some high expectations in this album. Maybe this can be the first album that I like after Black. Great video bro

IMO Load and Reload are great albums and their legacy is that they showed a great number of newer metal bands that it's ok to experiment, it's ok to change if you feel like it. It's also ok to go back to your roots as Metallica have done with their later albums. TO me personally, Load and Reload are amazing. Can't say the same about St. Anger and Death Magnetic, but there's some really great stuff on Hardwired. Looking forward to that new album coming out.

Love the vocals in this one. Nice driving drums as well. Anything Metallica does will always have the "expert karens"/. I just enjoy the music. Megadeth I like certain songs but they might as well rename the band to these guys who have to listen to NasalDave ;)

I too get sick and tired of people complaining whenever new Metallica music doesn't sound exactly like stuff off their first few albums. They've been around for FORTY YEARS, I WANT their sound to evolve and grow, as they evolve & grow as musicians. Honestly, imho they've only had one clunker of an album, and even that one has a few tracks I enjoy. Heck, the Hardwired album was fantastic, and this new track gives me high hopes for 72 Seasons.

I’m excited for the new album.. the first single doesn’t grab me like hard wireds first single .. but it’s still better than anything on St Anger lol.. thanks for the great content .. can’t wait to see the tour in Seattle 2024 which feels 20000000 years from now !damn it ! They didn’t completely fall apart after Cliff died “ rip”! I personally love every track of first 3 albums. Loved most of Justice especially dyers eve! Blackened n Harvester n frayed n straw were great too! Black album was iffy for my thrash addiction but still heavy well produced n damn …. The ballads were amazing. I basically didn’t love loads n anger but anger riffs were thrashy n god I wish they could re produce that . Love the live version better . Last 2 albums are good n looking forward to 72 !

They did save it on the new record, the songs have a little something from their whole Legacy of songs they did in the past which includes the 90s and st anger the previous 2 records death magnetic and hardwired where them ebracing their roots and making fast thrashy songs, i just think this 72 seasons is a more focused album they all just learned alot on the way and now comes back to just embrace all of it.... They have a varied account of experiences and albums and they just made something using all of that experience to their benefit.

I think part of the situation is that there was a lot of (and still is) great new music released every year and new bands as well. For example: if Iron Maiden released a fantastic new album, and bands like Dream Theater, Pantera etc. debuted, Metallica's latest album (and albums by other bands) might get lost in the shuffle unless they are phenomenal.

Everything I’ve seen and read always gives Cliff massive credit for the creative musical and lyrical construction of Ride and Puppets. It makes sense they lost their way ever since; it’s so evident in all their later albums. I’ll always love the earlier albums and Metallica will go down in history as the best, there’s no doubt. Granted they can still thrash, but the creativity and complexity in their song construction is long lost..

This might be because I only really got into Metallica a couple of years ago, but I really enjoy most of their discography. There are even parts of St Anger that I really dig. Also I think that The Black Album and Load are two of the best albums that the band has ever produced. Sure their relevancy has waned over the years, but it's impressive that a band this old has never really gone away or faded from rock culture.

I'm not gonna jump the gun on anything yet. I remember they came out of the gate strong with Hardwired, which was fast, energetic thrash, but then we heard the rest of the album... It wasn't bad per se, but most of it was still a far cry from that 80s thrash Metallica we all know and love. Not that they could ever make Master of Puppets again. That was a long time ago, a much different time, they were young and angry and they had Cliff then. But still, plenty of other 80s thrash bands are still cranking out heavy as hell, speedy thrash like Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Death Angel, Overkill etc. So it's possible to kick some butt even if the 1980s are long gone and you're in your 50s. Case and point: In 2003 Metallica put the god awful now infamous St. Anger. The following year Exodus put out the awesome Tempo of the Damned. Need I say more? The 2 singles they've released from 72 Seasons are promising, but I will reserve judgment until I hear the whole album.

It's very OK for a band to experiment with the sound, that means they're not stuck and evolve. Just because the music they like and put out isn't liked by the majority, or even disliked, doesn't mean that they're bad artists and "lost their way". There's no other way. The only way is to play and come up with music that they like in the first place and believe in their aesthetic vision. That's called having integrity as an artist and staying true to yourself. We shouldn't judge an artist's aesthetic success by how the public reacts to it. Kudos to Metallica for being true to themselves and ever changing!

No, a lot of what you’re saying isn’t really about their legacy. It’s your personal view and there’s nothing wrong with your personal view. If you hate every album after 1986 there’s nothing wrong with that at all for you.
No, I mean yes there are people that feel the same way as you but I think there’s also a larger group of people that understand that as they get older they widen their own taste in music. I don’t think Metallica ever sit out to say “OK we’re going to make a hard rock album.” I think they just do what they feel and don’t really care about what anyone else thinks.
I mean yeah, slayer in Megadeth always made pure thrash metal albums but it’s not like the fans rewarded them. You never hear anyone talk about any of their albums past the mid 90s. They can play those songs live and nobody can tell you the name of any of those songs Pass the mid 90s really.
And I would say everything since Death Magnetic in 2008 has been thrash bud it’s not as good as the Rady stuff but I still think it’s great music but they’ve already written their greatest songs. I mean if you take a thrash metal checklist and whatever you put on that list to make something thrash metal I definitely think Hardwired and Death Magnetic check those boxes. The thing is is that it’s been 30 years since the thrash metal days were the hardest type of metal we had. Since then you’ve had death metal, Nu Metal , Grindcore, black metal, Deathcore, etc. So if a band makes a thrash album that would’ve sounded great in 1987. It just doesn’t have the same kick to. It is all really.
I was in a band in the old second half of the 2000s and we were all big fans of bands like Pantera, Ozzy, Metallica, Megadeth, Sepultura, Slayer, etc. but when you make thrash or groove metal or just 80s metal in modern times it kind of feels like hard rock because hard rock is now a lot harder than it was. Like if someone made an album with 10 songs that could’ve been on any of the four first Black Sabbath albums and they put it out today it would be considered hard rock.
As far as their legacy, their legacy is intact. They’re going to go down as one of the biggest metal bands in history and they did a lot for the genre. I know your basement dwelling diehard metalhead wearing a Cannibal Corpse T-shirt is probably still on line today, crying about the black album, but the fact of the matter is That the black album introduced a lot of people to metal. I’m not saying the black album is the greatest metal album by any means. My favorite Metallica albums are the first four albums. But that album got a lot of people into Metallica and it got a lot of people into other bands that they would’ve never of gotten into if it wasn’t for them discovery Metallica through the Black album.
Slayer and Megadeth didn’t have any albums going gold in the 80s but their 80s albums with gold in the early 90s after the black album came out. Less than 100,000 people bought Kill Em All and Ride. The lightning win those albums came out. Today those albums have sold millions of copies but only after the Black album came out.
So yeah, you’re always going to have the people in the metal crown that never grew up and who actually can’t stand people that don’t listen to the hardest mental and are extremely judge mental towards anyone who isn’t a mentor fan. But then you’ve got the majority of people who aren’t like that And realize an entire band legacy doesn’t hang on a few albums that individuals didn’t like.
I’m actually really glad Metallica didn’t become one of those bands that just put out the same album 10 times in a row. I think that’s the real definition of selling out. When you’re putting out the same album over and over and over again because you’re scared to death of being labeled, the sellout, but that’s kind of what you’re doing. No the load albums aren’t thrash metal but I don’t think that makes them bad music. But I’m someone that listens to blues, hip-hop, rock, metal, etc. You can be a fan of metal and steel like other music. No, I traded in my “metalhead.” Name badge a long time ago. There’s too many rules in the metalhead handbook and I want no parts of that. So, despite how you might feel about them as an individual, they’re still going to go down as the biggest metal band of all time and they are legends.

I do hear a bit of nods to the older sound but I gotta compare it to when I first heard Hardwired (the single), that song sounded vicious and held on to its intensity for its 3 minute runtime. Whereas Lux Æterna sounds more like a soft Motörhead song. I know they can emulate Motörhead well, we've heard it in Motorbreath, but it's because that was raw and aggressive. This song sounds a bit too polished and mid-tempo for myself at least, to consider this their "return to form". But hey, I don't know what the rest of the album sounds like. Maybe Lux is just the breather track in the middle of the album and the rest is reminiscent of their old school sound. We'll just wait and see.

Amazing how they had a return to form in 2008, 2016 and now again in 2022... Are people just suffering from short memories or is it just cool to say that Metallica can't write good albums after the fact?
And laughable that we're talking about legacy 🤣 Metallica could've never released another thing and they would still be considered one of the greatest ever and most would agree that IF their last album was hardwired it was a VERY solid last effort... Fortunately Metallica are releasing another record though, and and in a few years time we'll do all this all over again.
As for the song, it's great fun. Kinda like hardwired in that it's simple heavy thrash pop, short and sweet. I think it would have fit nicely on kill em all or hardwired. Hetfield sounds great (like he did on DM and HW...short memories).

Please don‘t speak for fans in generell, but only for yourself. I‘ve been a fan for 36 years and my disappointment with the Boys is, that they stopped exploring, experimenting, surprising. What might be weird to you, are for me some of their best songs- no matter off from Load, Re-Load or St. Anger. Yes, the new song is good, but they‘ve done this before, they sounded the same before, (like Hardwired…) it could even be from another Band. I think their Music became common with Hardwired…And that‘s something you couldn‘t say about them for at least over 25 years. If your not happy with the last 30 Metalli-Years, sorry to hear. I can‘t stress enough how much I miss these days where they separated themselves from the rest with different sounds, styles, approaches and songs on every Album. Two more things: I definetely prefer St. Anger-tin-can-Snare over Hardwired-artificial-sounding-Snare and the differences between Metallica and Megadeth? Megadeth is not a Band. It‘s Mustaine with 2 or 3 new Dudes every 5 years or paying Colaiuta to play Drums on his Album…

@@RAWMUSICTV Hey dude, I love your videos and I have no issue with this one as well, however when I read this comment thread, I felt like there was a bit of miscommunication. OP doesn’t seem to be a native speaker, (going by their name I’m assuming some kind of Germanic nationality) and from that point of view you can indeed come across as if you were talking for fans in general and not just yourself (since you mostly spoke in third person instead of first). I’m German so I kind of understand it, since our language works a little differently than English (obviously) and when you translate things literally, you don’t always get the exact meanings or things can come across harsher. They say they understand this/your figure of speech, but I honestly don’t think they did, at least not the way a native speaker would’ve 😅 I’m not saying you need to accommodate that when making videos, the way you speak is fine and I think most people understand you the way it was intended, however next time sth like this comes up, maybe try to keep in mind that not everyone is as fluent in English as you are (I know it’s easy for native English speakers to forget this in our globalized world) and reply a little more kindly/explain more instead of “someone your age should be aware of this etc.”.
This was a longass comment and I hope I got my point across (I don’t think you have to change your way of speaking, I know you usually do documentaries and that’s just your style, so there’s nothing wrong with the vid (although OPs point that some fans have preferred Metallica being experimental is also true)), I’m just a little bit peeved when native English speakers assume everyone understands them the way they understand themselves/that English figures of speech etc. seem obvious/self-evident.
Nevertheless, I’m curious to see what future videos of yours like this will look like :)

There is a tendency, when Metallica releases a new album, that it is Metallica back to doing what they do best. Then later fans realise that it is far from their best. For every Screaming Suicide there is a Fade to Black that is simply superior. There are some awesome songs Metallica has released since the Black Album, but there is so much filler. I think part of the problem is Metallica takes too much control of the production, Lars has made some poor choices. I can understand how frustrating it was for Bob Rock during the Black Album. Metallica will never dent the what they did in the 80s. But if they binned some of the crap and used the time to polish their good ideas they could release albums as good as when they started.

Their legacy is fine and the massive mark they've left on music history will not be denied. Some of the statements in this video sound like the Metal-equivalent of the cringy-ass hipsters who complained when Bob Dylan used an electric guitar. The thing is, Metallica are operating on a WAY higher tier than most acts spanning all genres. Even if you don't listen to anything close to Metal, you likely know who Metallica is. They broke the barriers, to worldwide acceptance, held records for #1 releases and albums sold. No other act in the Thrash or Speed Metal spheres are coming close to that. Opinions may vary on various stages of their career, but their success has shown that they can make a WIDE range of things work.
