One of my favourite songs from My favourite album of all time. You need to understand what it was like in Manchester UK in 1989/92. We dominated the UK Chart with the best bands (Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, The Charlatans. The Smiths, New Order, etc etc) and most were Independent Labels. We also brought Chicago House music to Europe 'The UK Rave Scene' centered in Manchester with the most famous Club in the World for a few years (The Hacienda), an era known as Madchester. The two Genre's amalgamated in the Happy Mondays song - Hallejuah a song that is sublime. It is Rave music for the first two minutes before the song kicks in. As a City we felt on top of the world. We were dominating the UK music scene and dominating the underground House scene, the latter soon becoming mainstream. Manchester was the centre of the music world for 2/3 years. My all.time favourite band. And i was so lucky to see them play there last ever gig at Hampden Park in Glasgow when they reformed and broke up again. These guys were pioneers in mixing dance music with Rock n Roll. They had one of thee best Rhythm Sections and John Squire on lead guitar is phenomenal. Mix that with the swagger and total coolness of front man Ian Brown and you have one of the most influential British bands of all time.
My opinion for what it’s worth.. John Squire is one of best guitarists of his generation. Alan ‘Reni’ Wren is THE best drummer of his generation. Manny is a very solid bassist and Ian Brown is just a great front man!.. Put that together and you have one of the best bands to ever come out of the U.K…. Certainly one of the most influential Their best piece for me, is Tears… Or Fools Gold (full version) for the best taste of their sound
Yes, the late eighties/early nineties, there was the 'Madchester' scene, from Manchester, England, with great bands Stone Roses and Happy Mondays to come out of there...Very influenced by psychedelic rock...Inspired Oasis. Fun times in the UK. Other great songs by Stone Roses: Fools Gold, Love Spreads, She Bangs The Drums.
its not so dark, its about hunger, the hunger to escape their poor surroundings in council estates (or projects for our American cousins) and escape Margaret Thatchers attack on the working class and youth of Britain at that time. It was never meant to be a single (it was released by the record company to spite the band during a legal dispute they were having). Its the opening track to their debut album thats considered by many to be the greatest debut album of all time, its a masterpiece, a 10/10 album. Sadly the band imploded after the 2nd album, the split was fuelled by court cases that prevented them from recording for 3 years and during that time the band had drifted apart, lost momentum and had a really difficult time coming back together to record and write the second album (what can you do after your debut is hailed as one of the best albums ever?). The second album is still a great record but its disjointed, recorded in different studios, scrapped, re-recorded with different producer and you can clearly hear all that on the record, still a solid 7/10 album though.
It was irony - it was a take on being aware of avarice and desire and swerving it - Ian brown is pretty clear on it somewhere in an interview- indulgence is the enemy so to speak ? The stone Roses were about lifting people , positivity;)
It's definitely a cultural thing. You had to be growing up in the british indie era for these songs to make sense. My teens, Footy, meeting mates at the pub and when I started going to casinos is everything that Stone Roses represents for me.
Everyone thinks the Eighties were just what got played on commercial radio and nothing could be further from the truth. IMHO, the best music of the decade is virtually ignored by history. College radio and community sponsored radio were my saviors in the eighties.
Yeah ... Like Wipers, Young Marble Giants, The Feelies, Mission of Burma, The Soft Boys, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Teardrop Explodes, The Sunnyboys ... and that's just releases from 1980!!
@@adsonjetson Totally agree. At least Mission Of Burma got to be able to see how influential they became after they reformed in the 2000's. They easily drew audiences they never dreamed of in the 1980's. Wipers are a criminally ignored band
That commercial side of the 80s actually made me think I hated 80s music. Lol. And then in the early 00s, I discovered the "darker" side... 🤯 It is easily my favorite decade for music and my favorite group of subgenres. I love a variety of different types of music, but that stuff just deeply resonates with me for some reason.

This is a founding jam from Beatles -> Punk -> Early Alternative. jam anthem music... predecessor to Oasis, Cold Clay, The Smiths, New Order, Joy Division... Manchester england music scene ruled the world at one point all the best bands played there check out the amazing film 24 hour party people . Its a great film very funny
The 80s were a very interesting time for music. Yes commercially you had a lot of happy stuff but then when it came to alternative music there were some really moody dark stuff which was incredibly popular in the underground, but like you said it wasn’t until the 90s and early 2000s when that dark stuff became mainstream.
One of the best guitarists in Jon Squier and a killer drummer in Remi I am the Resurrection, Shoot you Down, Fool's Gold, Standing Here ... amazing tracks
It's funny everyone's so keen to explain why the song is good and why it was so necessary when it first came out, when someone who's "outside the scene" listens to it the first time, and not just let the music do the talking. The guy's feeling it anyway. While we're at it I might share my story about me and the Roses: I was not or am not familiar with the late 80's-early 90's northern rave scene or was never raised in a council estate, nor was doin E's and woke up hungover in my building's dustbin. Have had my own share of shit memories though. But I had heard about Oasis and Blur, maybe Suede, Pulp and The Smiths as well, and on many many occasions I saw Gallagher brothers praising "The Stone Roses" a band that came before 'em Gave them a few listens and liked it already. I didn't need anything else first, back then the music spoke of itself. It's only later I learnt summat about them, the context, the background where they were from what inspired to write the music, how the drummer's one of the most legendary drummers in UK, how they gave funny interviews in 89-90 and about their relationship with both the late 80's indie rock and the rave scene. That was all interesting for sure and gave some flesh on the bones but that's still completely secondary. What I suppose is great about timeless music it's timeless it works without being tied so tight to certain context or "scene" or all that. A great record is a record you can give to a fella from either America, Finland, Moldova or Uzbekiztan and say "Here, have a listen, this is great record" and if they're really into it they'll do the rest themselves. At least that's what inspires me.
This band is part of the Madchester scene. They played long songs meant for rave culture. Check out the Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, or the Charlatns UK.
These guys were Oasis before there was Oasis. Yes they were in the 80s, but they were the precursor to the whole Manchester (England) music explosion of the 90s. A massive influence on the Gallagher brothers, who like a lot of us misheard the lyrics and thought he wanted "to be a dog". Honestly. But we were listening to it on 45s back then, so it wasn't as clear. And YES, they were amazing when they were at the top of their game.
The lyrics are based on the story of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil in exchange for mastering the blues. "I don't have to sell my soul, he's already in me"
The roses are the greatest engmish band . Made of stone. Waterfall, and my favourite "daybreak" from their other album second coming. You need to review daybreak 👍
They forgot more than The Happy Mondays would ever know. Probably the greatest 1st album ever. They split up quickly. Btw Every step you take - Genesis? No, The Police - "Every Breath You Take."
looks like your first in on the stone roses, ive commented on other reactors pages to check them out but it seems like a lot of reactors ignore suggestions unless your donating money to them etc lol, all good though because they miss out on good content in the long run
Its not that they only react to suggestions when they get donations...i think you are not thinking about tje other side those guys get hundreds of request a day its an impossible task so to randomly choose is easier and not only that ofcourse anyone would skip someone who decides to finacially support ahead of the line I dont see the problem really.
@@watchbizmatik yeah thats a fair point.. hey while im here, you should do deep dive on the human league, they have some amazing songs like "fascination", "love action", "dont you want me baby", "the lebanon" etc ;) lol, sorry i couldnt help myself
This is Britpop and Pop-Rock. This came out in 1989. Do "She Bangs The Drums" and "I Am The Resurrection", they're written better lyrically a little! Made Of Stone, Shoot You Down and Waterfall are great too! Highly recommend these five others by them! Ian Brown is the singer, Mani is the bassist, John Squire is the guitarist and Alan Wren or Reni is the drummer.
This style of Moody music, so to speak, was invented in the early 80s by bands like Joy Division and The cure. When I say this style of music, I mean music with a Bass guitar heavy, driving beat, overlaid with very Shimmery, melodic lead guitar Drenched in delay and reverb. This music is often accompanied bye a deeply emotional, Minor Key vocal melody. This sound defined a subset Of entire generation of English Rock bands, especially from the North and the Midlands
That’s incredibly weird I just heard this song for my first time today too. I thought it was ok but not like Tool or something. You should try Puscifer it’s the singer for Tool.

Stone ROSES 🖤🖤🖤SINCE 90s
I remember the first time I heard this, mega!
The intro of the second coming is timeless
Let it go, and listen, my friend.
The lyrics are based on the story of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil in exchange for mastering the blues.
"I don't have to sell my soul, he's already in me"
is that true my dude ?
The blues were big in the UK. At least they were when my parents lived there.
@carmelmulroy6459 Mate without blues musicians we'd still be listening to skiffle
The roses are the greatest engmish band . Made of stone. Waterfall, and my favourite "daybreak" from their other album second coming. You need to review daybreak 👍
Is the most honest lyrics to every song you’ve ever heard of any is the root of the blues
Bye bye bad man🖤🖤🖤stone roses💯💯💯
Of course, what they are actually saying is "I wanna be a Dawn"!!
Somethings burning, somethings burning, somethings burning.
Aka Stoned Roses ;P Jeans of three feet wide and silken flower shirts were the order of that day.
The joke around this song is to sing "I want to be a door."
They forgot more than The Happy Mondays would ever know. Probably the greatest 1st album ever. They split up quickly. Btw Every step you take - Genesis? No, The Police - "Every Breath You Take."
Great mood song.
Listen to The Pixies, The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order/Joy Division, Echo And The Bunnymen
One of the best bands we every had in England imo
They had The Byrd's influence, and the Hammond B3 organ.
Don't need lyrics when you can feel it 👍
This was right at the end of the 80s, and could better be thought of as a pioneer for the forthcoming decade of the 90s imo. :D
I have THAT money shirt that Brown wears!!
looks like your first in on the stone roses, ive commented on other reactors pages to check them out but it seems like a lot of reactors ignore suggestions unless your donating money to them etc lol, all good though because they miss out on good content in the long run
Fools Gold! One of my favorite!!!
Love spreads, I am the resurrection and waterfall are some of their best songs. Fucking awesome band
Time for another?
Fools Gold (Full version) or Tears… you won’t regret it
Excellent band choice
2nd best band from owa pennines behind happy mondays
1989 sounding timeless, this could have been 2001 as well
check out, the sisters of mercy. two songs id suggest are "more" and also "the temple of love" get on them before the other reactors do ;)
You need to watch the Stone Roses, I am the Resurrection.
Stone Roses and Genesis are like chalk and cheese.
Have you done the Psychedelic Furs’ Alice’s House or India? Dark
Alice's house!! 😁
No I havent
You need to explore the whole album
That’s incredibly weird I just heard this song for my first time today too. I thought it was ok but not like Tool or something. You should try Puscifer it’s the singer for Tool.
The devil has already got him.
"I don't have to sell my soul, he's already in me"
Never heard this ,but good beat
He wants a door made from beer
Love Spreads is a good one by them - don't know anything else about them , am learning with you
Pre oasis Madchester ,check out the Happy Mondays
I never heard this one , I enjoyed it though.
Great Song
