The Stone Roses not just epitomized the Mancunian scene at the time. They codified it. Their magnum opus is "I am the Resurrection". It's lyrically simple but relatable and musically obtuse. Worth a listen.
It is interesting that certain cities in England have been creative hubs for music; Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol, as well as London of course. In the US; LA, San Francisco, Seattle, Austin, Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit.
Absolutely LOVE The Stone Roses. I listened to both their albums incessantly way back when. You dont really see music reactors reacting to them, which is a huge shame. Youre really good at this; with intelligent things to say about music. Please do more Stone Roses ( even if alot of their tracks are long)

Great reaction. Stone Roses really are one of the seminal bands of the 90s. They were part of the whole "Madchester" era together with bands like The Happy Mondays, who mixed indie rock with the burgeoning rave/dance/house scene of the time, with the legendary Hacienda club in Manchester at its core. 90s indie was great with bands like Ride, Slowdive, The Charlatans and many more. Please react to "I Am The Resurrection" also by The Stone Roses. It's magnificent. "Elephant Stone" is another excellent song by them.
I was 16 in the month (may) this came out in 1989 and it was on constant play in my bedroom to the annoyance of my parents. It was just the best thing I'd ever heard. The acid house and later rave scene was also in full effect and communism was collapsing everywhere. It felt like we were entering a utopian future. That's kind of how you see things at 16 before you get jaded by the realities of life. I must have heard this track in particular about 5000 times (and that's not even an exaggeration). But in all that time and all those listens the points you made about the sound of menial jobs and machinery etc. in the beginning and the end had never once occurred to me and of course it makes perfect sense. I think I was too close to this band and sound at the time to think that far into it. Coming at it brand new like you just have it probably seems obvious. But I really had never seen those points in this track before this video. Very perceptive man. And now I'll never be able to un-hear it.
The beauty of the lyric "I don't have to sell my soul, he's already in me" is that it can be interpreted either way. Is Ian Brown singing about Jesus or the Devil? Both work in the song.
A lot of great bands like Happy Mondays came out of the MADchester scene in the late 80's but The Stone Roses were and are the absolute best of the best. I put John, Manny and Reni up there with Page, Bonham and Jones. No Stone Roses = No Oasis The 2 albums they released are in my Top 10 albums of all time! John Squires is a Guitar God!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this song, it's so beautiful. Still a lot of dreamy sounds in their other tracks, but with more of a funky vibe. Really like your take on it too. For other dreamlike songs out of Manchester, try The Chameleons (Second Skin and Swamp Thing are their most popular tracks, and good starting places) - came almost a decade before and never broke out of the underground, despite influencing so many who did make it big.
I've never heard of Stone Roses, but their sound is great. A shame that there was five years between their albums, that had to have cost hem a lot of momentum in moving their career forward. Stone Roses was happening at the same time as Seattle was blowing up.
Hey Ziggy I highly recommend checking out their 2 albums. The bass player went on to join a band called Primal Scream and the guitarist formed The Seahorses.

i take quite a different view on those lyrics, "i don't have to sell my soul, he's already in me" means to me that i'm not having to sell out in life, not needing to sell my soul, for the divine (in whatever way, whomever it is) is already in me, which means the divine is not an outside force, its within us. "I wanna be adored" is exaclty what adored is, to be loved and respected, now that doesn't come from being put on an pedestal by adoring fans, you want to be adored by your family, friends etc, its what we all want, when you're adored or you adore someone, its more and bigger than love, it goes beyond love.
My all time favorite song from the Stones Roses is "Love Spreads Around" . if you listen to the guitars in that song you will wonder "Is Hendrix playing??" :)

My memory of that time was that the rave scene was born out of the Manchester music. It was a little different from how raves developed over time. But the formula was there: trippy rhythmic music and usually drugs to trance and dance into an blissful state of mind. To me, the drugs are unnecessary. The music and dancing that flows naturally are what it’s about.

Very interesting analysis of the music and interesting explanation of the dreamlike quality and industrial sounds, and I really think you're onto something there. I have noticed that musical sound often mimics the social environment, and can be heard as a sonic critique of that social environment: for example deranged punk gives a sense of a chaotic and violent social texture, grime an urban, dark social texture, no-wave a dejected, feral social environment etc. You can see it in blues how it mimics the depressing social environment in racist America for black people in the early 20th century, and then it kind of evolved into soul as that consciousness began to express and through expression, redeem itself. This is clearly because whatever accounts for musical sound, it does convey the experiences of consciousness of reality, and marginal, subcultural experiences tend to be for that reason more abstract, more incohate, and here you hit upon the dreamlike quality of Manchester and it is an absolute shithole town. I was homeless there for a while and it's one big car park. Better then London I suppose which is mainly one big pig stye for the rich. Anyway, was good to hear your reaction: have a nice day!
They got thoroughly screwed over by their label. The extended mix of "Fool's Gold" is a must-hear. BTW, you'll often hear the term "Madchester" applied to this era of Manchester Britpop - it was the sound of 1980s and 1990s raves. And that comment of yours "sounds like they're in a factory" made me laugh, because the biggest Manchester record label at the time - one they probably *should* have signed to - was Factory Records.
If there was no Stone Roses they'd be no Oasis. The sentiment of I wanna be adored as the 1st track from they're first album is comparable to Oasis first track from they're first album - Rock N Roll Star.
Best debut album of all time. 10/10, not a single filler on that album, most bands would be lucky to have a 'Greatest Hits' album of that quality and they done it with their first. Liam Gallagher as a 17 year old followed the Stone Roses all around the UK on one of their tours, then went on to form Oasis because of it. While not being a huge influence on Radiohead, Ed from Radiohead went to Uni in Manchester when the Stone Roses were huge and they used the producer of The Roses Debut (John Leckie) to produce their album The Bends, so there is a bit of influence there.

I didn't know the wait for the second coming was because of record deals. They missed an opportunity. It doesn't surprise me though, they're all daft! I can tell you what happened because I was there. We all watched TOTP and it had become ridiculous about number ones and the latest fad. It was horrible. The Stone Roses did a dirty "sex" tape. Actually it was a demo tape that did the rounds. These were also the early days of rave as well and The Stone Roses bridged the gap between leisure for fun (rave) and the obvious chill out and appreciation of a more traditional music. By the time The Second Coming came out the gap had been filled. Music is 100% about a time and a place IMHO their masterpiece is The Resurrection, John Squire made that band.

Love to see a reaction to Stone Roses. Unfortunately it is always this song. It is a great song but not super representative of the band. I would recommend ”Mersey Paradise” for kind of the most stone rosey of all The Sone Roses’ songs.
