I moved to the Raleigh area a few years ago and I wasn’t ready for the change so I moved back to my home state. I’m shocked people are saying it is so unfriendly. No place is perfect but I experienced so many friendly people while there. I hope to be back within a few years.
At the 1:20 mark, dude must got Raleigh mixed up with NYC. Raleigh might not be great but it's far from a Rat hole and the people are friendly..and the traffic can't even compare to L.A..
LA traffic gets so much unfair criticism. Drivers there know how to drive, and move around each without making a fuss, even at high speeds. They actually are good about merging and they will help you out in a jam. I've seen them make a hole in traffic 4 lanes deep so someone can get to traffic going the other way. Yeah, some of the big highways can get slow like ANY major city.

Grew up in Raleigh, left in '98, and now it's boring af. Raleigh is a capital city that's grown tremendously but wants to maintain some kind of nostalgic small town feel and it's evident in it's branding, PR and politics. No city can be both. Put your big city draws on, and deal with the things that come with growth, or give Charlotte the capitol.
Thinking about moving from MA and yes it's a bargain moving to Raleigh. My issue in MA is i want to move from my Condo, but buying or renting means going to a city that i don't want to move to just because it's affordable.
As someone that has been living in Raleigh for three years, I have finally sold my house and as soon as my house on the coast is finished being built in a month or two I’m leaving Raleigh for good. I’m getting into real estate and wanted a fresh start. I moved here from a much larger city, Nashville, Tennessee, and my experience in Raleigh has not been a good one. I can’t speak on everyone else’s experience, but most of the people that I meet and talk to that have moved here also from out of town have the exact same things to say about Raleigh. The people here in Raleigh are some of the rudest people I have ever encountered in my entire life and I used to live in Cleveland and Chicago. It’s like people don’t live in reality here and they would do their best to stab you in the back and keep you down because they’re not accomplishing anything in their lives. Raleigh is very tiny compared to where I’m from and it’s like they want to sell Raleigh as something that is simply not. It’s almost like there paying these data companies to be on the best cities list. I wouldn’t recommend insects to move here. The amount of racism that I have experienced in Raleigh is astounding. Rolly just can’t compete with much larger cities to what it has to offer in reality. It’s so overcrowded with poor infrastructure and it seems poorly ran. It took me three years to make a decent friend in Raleigh on my own due to the lack of genuine people that I am used to even coming from a much larger city. The fake Southern hospitality here is real in Raleigh. It doesn’t have much of an identity and not a lot to do here, but they won’t be able to keep moving here when they can’t even figure their own mess out. It’s like all he wants is tax money to be quite honest. I will say the housing market has slowed down tremendously, but I sold my house in four days so that’s one positive I guess. The food scene in Raleigh is very how can I put this, mediocre. The level of hate in this city is astounding. I’ve owned property in North Raleigh years before actually moving to Raleigh myself so I knew the aspect of visiting but once you live, here is a completely different story. People get so offended when you tell the truth about this place because they don’t want to hear or deal with it I’ve even had a real estate agent go to my personal Instagram page and tell me I was ruining business for him because he made a video about Raleigh and people started telling the truth and he couldn’t handle it and I had to remind him that this is a public platform but anyway. Raleigh has some bad juju on it and it was hard to put my finger on it when I moved here, but I think I hit the right spot.
You mentioned Pollen. I read that Durham is the best place to live for allergy sufferers on the East Coast. Do you feel better when you are working around Durham?
Great question. You know I never paid attention to how my allergies react in Durham during that time of year. Since Raleigh and Durham are about 30 mins from each other I couldn't imagine it being too much of a difference, but definitely something to keep an eye on as the season approaches again.
I don't think there's much of a difference, but what I did notice it that, although the two cities are side by side with one another, Durham has less trees, matter fact less of anything. I know you're not black, but if we were living in the days of Jim Crow, Durham would be the city poor blacks would live and wealthy whites would reside in Raleigh. Yes I'm black and that's what I see whenever I'm there. Some areas have been developed, but not much, still has that mill feel and look to it, with train tracks everywhere. The city is very dated!
Public transportation in Raleigh NC, is Awful and Im being very nice, granted it is a great place, but getting around Raleigh is not good, plus its too political for me. Also the wages here are poor , you are not getting any bang for your bucks here. I Would highly recommend Durham, Charlotte, and Asheville, these are the cities that i would live. I plan to move out of NC for good and retire to either the Pacific Northwest, or out of the country. Maybe things will be better in the future. But thats my opinion. I'm from NYC and I lived in Raleigh for 20 years and it is time for a change. Best wishes for those that love and want to move to Raleigh.
A good starting point can be looking into; Clayton, Fuquay Varina, and Angier. If you’d like more specific information or begin creating a plan to relocate feel free to reach out to me at info@livinginraleighnc.com
Here's the deal. If you come here and don't want to assimilate, don't bother staying, you'll hate it and won't get along with anyone, including those that moved from where you came from, why, simple if you left because you couldn't afford, stand, or bear with the previous area your brain told you to change you ways. Otherwise, you would've stayed where you are because you brain can handle it and can adjust. I moved here over 30 years ago from up north between the NYC and Philly metros, I just went back, it is still terrible up there and getting worse. Down here, there are changes but, the good thing is that those that are trying to bring the BS northern mentality are either leaving for Florida, good luck or, going back up north.
I understand, it’s something in the works and being discussed as we speak so if Raleigh is a desired place for you I’d definitely recommend keeping up with the public transportation situation.

I spent a large part of my life in Raleigh. Moved in and out of town several times. Honestly it's the worst place I have ever lived. Hot and humid in the summer, cold and wet in the winter. The worst part for me was the culture. I have never lived in a place where there were more self-righteous people that actually knew less. Gaslighting and backstabbing are considered normal here. It's part of the culture. Moral standards, they put on a good show. Raleigh is a clean town. But being a wild single guy most of my life, I founds Raleigh time and again as the most common place to have an affair with a married women. Not sure why. Maybe it's part of their back stabbing culture. Their driving is horrible. Using your blinkers in Raleigh is a no-no. Other drivers will use this as a chance to cut you off. Raleigh is famous for this. Don't use your blinkers! Pollen, allergy problems? The entire state is filthy with pine trees. I had many friends that were miserable every spring.
