I can remember in 1962, that my parents threw us three girls in the 1960 Chevy Parkwood station wagon and drove us from Grand Rapids Michigan to Inyokern California on Route 66 in the month of June. In Oklahoma we stopped at a campground, I think, in a place called Red Rock Canyon. My Dad and my middle sister slept in a tent outside and my oldest sister, my Mom and I slept in the back of the station wagon. My Dad and my middle sister came back to the car when my sister peed in the tent and got Dad all wet. We lost five tires on separate incidents along the way. When we were in Texas someone was passing our car and yelling, "Your Tar" " Your Tar". It took us awhile to decipher the Texas drawl! I can remember stopping in Gallup New Mexico to stop for breakfast at this little cafe. They were so busy with only one waitress and she dropped orange juice right by our table. My mother got up, went into the kitchen, grabbed a mop and some rags and began to clean the floor and the table. She then took the mop and bucket back into the kitchen and began to wait on tables. When she felt the young girl was caught up, we ate our breakfast and moved on to the Petrified forest where it was so hot. We had one of those water bags hanging on the front of the grill and one of those old window air conditioners where you pulled the string an cold air came out. My head was in my mothers lap and she pulled the string and all the cold water came down on my head. So Route 66 was one of my favorite memories at the age of 10 years old and I am 69 years old today. Chuck, Bertha, Janet, Jill and Joy travelled Route 66. Just a note to say we drove across country to visit my Aunt and Uncle in Inyokern California. My Uncle was on a submarine for 19 years serving in the Navy and his 20th year was spent on shore duty at China Lake Naval Weapons base in Ridgecrest California. We moved to the desert in 1964 and I have been a desert rat ever since. Thanks for the memories.

I tell everyone they should drive cross country at least once. If for nothing else just the change in landscape from the East to West is just amazing. I’ve done it 4 or 5 times in a car a couple as a kid in a motorhome and many times in a 18 wheeler.
I’d leave tomorrow if I could.

As I saw you at the Lincoln Library I saw the dresses Mary Lincoln wore. I read a great book on the relationship of Mary and Elizabeth Keckley a former black slave, and Mary's dress maker. Well worth the read.

We did a trip on Route 66 in 1972 in a station wagon with my parents and 5 of us kids. My sister was car sick the entire trip and nobody wanted to sit next to her in case she got sick. Unfortunately she ended up in the worse possible seat for somebody suffering from motion sickness. She was in the rear facing far back seat of the station wagon. It was definitely a trip to remember. My husband and I have gone back and visited several portions of old Route 66. You bring back several childhood memories. As a child we took many a trip from Chicago to Springfield, Illinois on Route 66. Thanks for the smiles and the laughs.

Having pilot-trainee spouse jump straight from parking lot to public roads? You’re a braver man than I shipmate (not for her technical handling of the rig, or any threat to life & limb, but for fear of the potential harm in my sleep if I don’t phrase that constructive criticism “constructively” enough 😎). When you get to Santa Monica pier, don't forget to get your certificate to show you've completed the drive! And you should abandon the RV for one night when you get to The Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari NM. A real 1930s nostalgia stay. We took our time doing our route 66 trip and it has been one of the highlights of our travels - we tried always to drive on the original road when we could, don't care for interstates, the whole route is full of fascinating places. Go for a meal in the Roadkill Cafe in Seligman AZ with its amusingly named menu items like Swirl of Squirrel or Splatter Platter!! There are so many places it would take all day just to list them!

Covered wagon was the first RV Trish. Also great job driving the Bird. You should explain to Trish when you "run out of air" on the air brakes they will come on and stay on until the air builds up again, nice unless you are in the middle of an intersection. Stay safe and healthy.

Your new book will tell you the best way to stay off the interstate highways. The people are awesome. We did the route on our Honda Goldwings. Stop and talk to the people, especially at the museums and shops. It is awesome and kind of sad looking at the empty buildings. We want to do it again now that we are both retired. Probably do it in an older car for the real feel, lol. Love your bus.

I’m a retired truck driver with 43 years of experience driving different kinds of trucks and repaired them myself. I was most concerned about using the bungee cord to pull up the accelerator when it’s stuck. This won’t work in emergency situations. Highly recommend you get it fixed immediately. It sounds like it is a broken throttle return spring and check the bottom of the pedal to make sure it isn’t getting hung up on the floor mat or something may be under it. We have watched ALL your videos and love your positive attitude and all your travels.

If you head down to the Florida Keys one day give us a shout. Would love to collaborate with you for a "Keysie" video from your perspective, by water and/or land. This was back in the 60's of which a lot of what you showed was not there. Just a regular house on a road in a town. So enjoyed seeing the new stuff. This is a lot of fun so enjoying this adventure. Thanks Please give Charlie a hug from me as he is so loveable. Stay safe.

Someone has probably already said this somewhere, but I thought I would just in case they haven’t. Make time while you’re in Amarillo to spend time in Palo Duro Canyon. If I remember correctly, y’all stayed only one night the last time you came through. PDC is the second largest canyon in the US. Second only to the Grand Canyon. The biggest difference is that you can drive down into Palo Duro. It’s really beautiful and worth the time spent. Loving the series!

    1. That is exactly how it would have sounded if my husband was teaching me to drive that thing, with my oldest son giving Caleb's commentary in the background. LOL
    2. I have lived most of my life in IL/MO- all over the state. So this was a trip down memory lane for me. I grew up around Springfield and 90% of my school field trips were Lincoln related. LOL! I say 2 days for Lincoln sites- one day doing what you did with the Museum, Home and Tomb. Then second day at Lincoln's New Salem about 30 miles NW of Springfield, where Lincoln lived before moving to Springfield. It's a whole village of homes with the story of the people who lived in the village at the time Lincoln did. Often they'll have historical demonstrations.
    3. I know you didn't tell us where you stayed, but we stayed at the same RV park all of summer of 2019 when we were full-timing :)
    4. I'm also loving this Rt.66 season! We dream of doing it after the kids are grown in my husbands 69 Impala (with a matching teardrop camper.)

The parking brakes should be spring activated not air. Did Trish not want to tilt the steering wheel down some? Beautiful bus. "Root 66"

That statue was in front of a hot dog stand in Cicero on ogden Avenue for over 50 years before bunyans was sold. I lived at less 5 blocks from that place

LOVE this!!!! Rte 66 goes through our Chicago suburban town (you SKIPPED by on segment #1 - LOL!). But it was such fun to see you drive by Illinois State University, our son's alma mater. My husband & I need to take a trip south on the Mother Road, and spend some time in Pontiac, IL and the Rte 66 Museum. Looking forward to seeing St. Louis next week.

Another great video. You're losing air because your air brake system has a leak. When you apply the service brake with the spring brake released you should lose not more than 4 psi over 2 minutes. Plus the Bird should maintain its air overnight.

I’m absolutely loving this season! I read a book series a few years back, The Broken Road, by Paul Evan’s (3 book series). It’s sort of a life reset facilitated by a pilgrimage on Route 66. I’ve been fascinated by the road ever since. Definitely on my bucket list! I can’t wait for next week’s episode! Oh, and the whole not having a “park” option on The Bird, I had this exact conversation with my husband… his car is the same way and I just can’t accept it! It’s terrifying to not put a car in park! 😳🥺😱🥴

    KYD!!!!
Just a heads up...In an air brake system !!!!CAUTION: Compounding the brakes happens when a service brake application is made with the park brake still applied. This can result in damaged brake components and possibly brake failure. To avoid compounding, the park brake should be released before a foot brake application is made.

Great Route 66 vids! We crossed over 66 while driving to Denver, while driving on Route 36, the original pony express route, but almost unused now ( they have a museum too!

We traveled Route 66 this year as well as cross country LA to Tampa and it was amazing our kids loved it especially the donkeys in Oatman, AZ. There is a podcast on Route 66 that has some interesting info. Can’t wait to watch your journey unfold especially how to navigate it in a RV. But if you get a chance try to stay in at least one iconic Route 66 hotel/motel. Happy Travels!!

You could of gone into The Old Capital, which was near by the Museum, the railroad station where the big Lincoln-Douglas debate and the same place they brought his body back from DC to bury, which you should of went to his tomb also. Then about 20 miles Northwest of Springfield, is a reconstruction of the village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood, Lincoln's New Salem.
