As Class of '83...thank you so much for that historic montages and I'm especially grateful for that split second of Don Johnson!! ❤ We experienced the love/hate with our '84 Airstream, but pros definitely outweighed the cons!! Always love your show!!
A Wanderlodge is not an RV, its a lifestyle. When you own one you become part of a huge family. You need to attend the WOG Rally in Pine Mountain, Ga in the fall.
OMG I recorded that Big Red commercial at 21:09 in 1983 at Universal Recording Studio in Chicago! Boy did that took me back. Group 4 studio singers in the heyday of jingles..
What a walk down memory lane! I’m 60 years old and remember every single one of those clips. Wow! It’s cool, nostalgic, horrifying and embarrassing all at the same time. Lol! The Bird looks great and I’m so glad you’re all enjoying it. Hi Charlie!🐾❤️🐾
LOW POWER ISSUE - We own an 88 Bluebird. To address your lack of power issue and with the engine off remove the engine cover inside the rig then check your throttle linkage by depressing the throttle pedal completely then make sure the throttle lever on the injection pump is going to full throttle (all the way against the stop). To obtain this you may need to make a linkage adjustment. Let us know if you have questions.
We love the amount of sofa space you have in The Bird! It is amazing! And the twin beds really open up the back of the RV for family use w Hen you need two areas for entertainment! I need to organize my house like you have done. Excellent suggestions. We watched KUD for five hours las night…enjoying reruns. It’s amazing to look back and see how much the children have grown in such a few years! They have matured before our eyes! What advantages they have experienced! You have made friends in so many places! We look forward to each week!
I love all things vintage! This was a GREAT tour. The retro commercials and tv shows were awesome - love me some Tom Selleck! 😎😉 Mark’s Mom! That’s so cool! Which commercial(s) was she in?
When I bought my Class A, I could have gotten great deals with fifth wheel units but my main concern is safety. As a SF, not having to exit my vehicle until I'm sure of surroundings or for a restroom break or quick lunch was my main consideration. I had motorized RV's before so the driving and doing checking, hooking up, breaking camp wasn't anything new, my ex couldn't drive for more than 15 minutes at any time due to physical limitations. In the 90's we converted 2 buses for personal use, 1st was 35' with straight natural aspirated 6 cyl. Detroit and manual transmission, talk about a slug up the hills but averaged 11 mpg and 13 on flat highways at 65 mph. The 40' had a 8V92 Silver Detroit with 4 spd Allison automatic, pumped up the injectors and turbo. We cut the roof off and raised 8" to flatten the interior ceiling, was under 13'. It was 36,000 lbs and screamed up the hills. Had 2 full bays accessible that we could put our quads in the belly and still have 1 full bay available for anything else.
Your vlog is so well produced, and you are such an engaging and relatable couple. This came up on my algorithm today and I’m so happy and impressed. I don’t think I will ever buy an RV, but for pure stress free entertainment you’ve done a great job. I especially love the nostalgia. Extremely informative too.
Love our 77 FC31 RB Wanderlodge . Surprising how well the layout works, and just how well built it is. Now if I could just find a company that could do a EV conversion. Great video, nicely done.
❤️it, I watched the video when you first picked it up, it was great. All of the 1984 clips, we remembered everyone. My wife used to work for a school district, driving a newer Bluebird snub nose school bus, it would hold 83 kids. 👍👍👍👍on keeping your daydreams
You all pointed out that you were thinking about cutting down the back from your table so you would have more room to get in the bathroom. What about getting a "piano hinge" for the backing frame. Then you can tuck it away when needed for extra room but still have the full area while Marc is editing videos?
Glad yall love the rv. Character and personality... :) I personally prefer the new and modern, but do admire those that are willing to spend all the effort to restore old vehicles.
I use vinegar on my brushes and sponges after every use. I keep it in a spray bottle mixed with water 50/50. Never any stink and kills bacteria without the possibility of bleaching my clothes😬
Everything you said about owning an older RV is true. We recently sold our much loved 1993 Airstream because the maintenance was becoming a big factor in our camping experience. We decided we wanted to spend our time camping, and not worrying about all the projects that needed to be done on the Airstream. We sold it to someone who wanted a “project”,,and we purchased a new rig that fits our camping style perfectly. So it felt like a Win / Win.
Any problems going to a RV park that has a limit for vehicles older than 15 years old? I have heard that some places have such restrictions regardless of how nice it may look but have an age limit and will turn down RV's due to age.
Great episode and thanks for the ending where you discuss some of the pros/cons of a classic vehicle. As far as solar & batteries, I think one consideration is that when everything goes belly-up at home, some kind of rig is valuable. My example was last winter, we had 72 hours without power during a winter storm. Having a rig that you can go out to that has power and heat would be amazing - a bit like the lunar lander on Apollo 13, it can get you back to where you need to go, maybe not with the same level of comfort you were hoping for, but I definitely didn't sleep well without my CPAP running for three nights... and having an RV in the driveway that could have kept us warm and powered (and fresh ground coffee for the wife - she ran out - would have been amazing. In our case, we're part-owners of a park model RV in a resort, but we're considering getting a towable that we can use when it's not our turn at the park model, as well as for emergency uses like that. Luckily, Santa brought me a nice solar generator that can be recharged from the car when needed... that's a good first step.
The 1980s montage would have been perfection if you included footage from "Stripes" which used a GMC Motorhome as the EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle...which would have tied in nicely with Ghostbusters since Bill Murray and Harold Ramis were in both movies. That would have been a nice follow-on with the GMC Motorhome Commercial.
Cool rig, thanks for the tour. I used to rebuild cat engines, and that poor 3208 is wholly inadequate for much of anything. Sorry its such a snail. The rest of the rig is really cool. I would certainly consider a repower instead of power adders, which wont help much. A cummins swap would sure be about 10 times better, and money better spent IMO. Great video.
I own a 1977 fc35 so I have thought long and hard about a re-power. The problem is the form factor, the bus is made for a square engine, not a rectangular one. This basically eliminates the two obvious choices- Cummins and dt466. I would go for a duramax, although figuring out the electronics might be a problem.
I worked with CAT for a number of years. If I remember, Blue Bird insisted on the 3208. Power was adequate for the relatively light duty of a school bus which is what the Wanderlodge started out as. The 3208 was always intended as a medium duty engine for medium duty applications. The Blue Bird was always short on space for the engine. Trying to get the valve covers off to adjust the valves was always a hassle.
We bought a 1976 MinnieWinnie, for $500.00.& it was ALL orange!!! Carpets,Table Walls, etc. EVERYTHING!!! HAD to gut it out, now remodeling it(When it stops getting so Cold & Rainy). but are making progress when we can, since all the surgeries I've had, Now have a Prosthetic foot/leg on my right, had skin cancer in my foot. But teaching myself to walk with it, & doing a GREAT job at that!!!! So when we can finishing the walls, then floor, then MY part of where I want things!!!! LOVES/HUGS TO ALL!!!
COMMAND STRIP DRAMA!!! My hooks fall off the adhesive when we hang our robes (one per hook)! They fell off 5x... hasn't since it has been in the 60°s though.... anyone else??
Hey KYD, Bus Grease Monkey is a UA-cam channel on vintage buses that were converted into RVs. He may be able to work on your bus. Love your videos, the montage showed me my age 😂
I celebrated my 25th birthday on the day that The Bird rolled off the line. We love our '97 Newmar Dutch Star but I understand the "love/hate" relationship you have with the older rig. We considered trying to keep it original but "original" stunk and was mostly teal. We stripped almost everything out in our renovation and are glad that we did. We look forward to meeting you in Georgia!
Love that bus! Don’t renovate it! Unless something breaks or wears out don’t change it. It’s in great shape! I think Trish should get into commercials! She’s so great at these walk throughs!
1984, the best year ever. That was the year I met my partner. 37 years later, 3 grown children, 1 grandchild and 3 more on the way. So many memories through the throwback montage. Thank you.
In 1984…55 MPH was the law EVERYWHERE. 40 MPH wasn’t that bad. But now, with some speed limits over 80 MPH….your in the way! Hahahaha love the rig. Thanks for the tour.
Interesting that you do not have a turbo on a 1983. By then I think that was the only option. Some of the California birds came with a 225 hp turbo in 1982 I think but by 1983 they were all 250 turbos, and I see from the quick view when you opened the doghouse you have the square turbo intake. If your motor has been backed up by someone to save money you could put the turbo back on. If you have not already take the serial number into a cat dealer and see if it is the turbo version, which has some internal improvements to take the extra power. If someone has put an older 210 hp NA in you are stuck. There is nothing cost effective that will really help. In Northern California you will be down to 20 mph for the record if everything is in good shape. California being sea level more or less the NA birds do not struggle as much as they do in the high country where you are doing 15 in a cloud of black smoke. We have a 1981 and after 8 years I am almost done shoehorning in a 450 hp Cummins ISM because while I love my bird, it can be very stressful doing a fraction of everyone else's speed on a busy highway. We live in British Columbia so everything is 6 to 8 per cent for miles.
In one of the earlier videos (New RV: KYD's REAL Season 10 Premiere!) (skip to 15:51 in that video), he opened the dog house and we could see the turbo clear as day. Its in there. A few WL owners tried to point it out but I think with so many comments, he likely did not see it. We tried!
Sounds like the DC compressor fridge is a game changer! I am so tired of the inconsistent temperature in the fridge in the truck camper I bought in 2020, I’m ready to yank it out and replace it with a compressor style fridge
It is January 14th 2022 and it is 1:36 PM are you on highway 98 and 331 Is in Florida in the panhandle??? Just saw an airstream go by with a silver pick up truck and I swore the driver looked just like you lol!
Really enjoyed your video! We (married for 41 years) have gone from tent camping to a Lance Cab over, to a Jayco 28 ft fifth wheel with no slides then to a 37 ft Raptor with 3 slides a small garage and extra bedroom n the back. Now we have a 40 ft 2010 Tuscany class A with 4 slides! Loved the Raptor but my husband got tired of the hooking up. We feel the class A is so much easier especially when you get to your destination. You’re right about trying different styles of RVs. We have 800 watts of solar panel on our class A. We love the fact that our refrigerator can be 12 volt or propane if we’re boondocking! Love your Blue Bird! Definitely a conversation starter! Every RV has its pros and cons. Fun and informative video! Safe travels! Hope to meet you on the road!👍😊
As an avid classic wood boat enthusiast, I totally agree about starting early to make sure everything is going to work. The public boat ramp is not the place you want to find out that the Gray Marine flathead engine won't start. Also agree with making friends and high fives on the highway towing a classic woody. When everything is singing, vintage ANYTHING is the cat's butt!
Very good tour and video. I decided about two years ago that I wanted an old bus. Fell in love with the GM4106 model. I found a 1962 4106 that had been converted in Southern California and flew out, bought it and drove it across country back to Arkansas. It was not in good shape mechanically but by the grace of God I made it with no issues. Myself and my buddy spent most of 2020 going through all the mechanical and repairing everything. Keep in mind that I have a fine fifth wheel and my wife couldn’t understand why I ever wanted an old bus, but it did teach me a lot about the old ones. The thing that stands out it that they were made to be repaired and will last forever. It went to a new home and owner in Florida last year and my wife is happy now. I kind of miss it but truer words were never spoken, “you better make sure your rig is ready”.
we have a 1998 Holiday Rambler Endeavor class A Motor home, we have lived in it full time with our dogs and cat and recently ventured in it on Route 66, in Oklahoma, Kansas, and a little Missouri, visited Branson MO, and (Mayberry) Mount Airy NC
Thanks for the tour guys! So glad you are showing off your Wanderlodge. We call it the Wanderlodge effect, any where you go folks will come up to you and want to know about the bird. We also have a 1984 Wanderlodge PT40 which is the rear engine 40' model, it retailed around $350k in 1984. Many folks cut down the dinette as most of the time its only 2 people, I have mine cut down but it slides in and out so I can add cushions and have 4 people or push it in and it gives you room in the kitchen.
To keep things on the coffee bar from sliding around, get a roll of the rubberized shelf liner. Cut pieces just smaller than those baskets or coffee makers and put underneath. No more sliding around.
3:43 - So typical of Goldens. Park where you need to walk… Being a large dog, they do not move quickly. It is perplexing. 28:51 - Glad you mention other campers consideration. Recall running the extra noisy 1987 Onan generator in a State campsite, the tent neighbors cheered when we shut it down. On for about an hour at 10 AM, tent campers were outside their tent, no operation during quiet hours. The quiet diesel gen.’s seem better. Not the unit we had. Thank you for the posts that bring back the experience memories of motorhome travel and stays. 😊
What a gorgeous place to be staying, the views are spectacular. This video was a hoot. Just a little 1980's slang. The commercials were so fun to watch. I had no idea the rig was so spacious inside, it looks super comfortable. I have two questions; is it possible to put a new engine in the rig and my other question is about your air fryer. I've noticed Trish you like using your air fryer and have commented that it works really well. Could you share as to what the brand is. Now a days its great when you can purchase something and know ahead of time if it works well. Have a blessed week guys. Looking forward to next week and seeing more of your surroundings.
HEY KIDS... 110 lbs in a big semi tire is no joke. Blow a steer tire and you could be serious bad news. (Just ask my uncle. ..well not technically. Funeral for that old 90 year old trucker is this week) BUT... he blew steer on his semi and went upside down, collapsed the cab and trapped him hauling bulk milk tank in a ditch that was closed on both ends and tank ruptured. He almost drowned in his own milk! He had already bought new tires for the truck and got a last minute run. So dont know if you have a tire monitoring system for pressure and temperature but if not get one and do some research on how to handle your rig if steer tire blows out. Cameras 360 degree eyeballs are a thing too, especially to see blind spots (cones) and tow vehicle. Saw a story where folks drug their toad with flat and caused major ugly to happen. I wont own a new rig but finding good talented, honest mechanics for either new or old is something that takes a minute. You probably already know all this anyway so ....Stay safe. Watching your content puts a happy spot in my heart.... I
Sorry for your loss. That is some story about your uncle. Yes, blowing a steer-tire is definitely no joke. They actually did a video on that exact subject. It's title is.... "Class A RV: Front Tire Blow Out"
@@PatrickWagz Thanks for the thought and the content reminder. At 69 you are lucky to remember the important stuff, let alone where you saw it. Just hate when you tell the author about their previous content :)
Mary Lou Retton was number one in 1984, she was awesome to watch. Was that Reagan signing the GPS and google mapping bill otherwise known as star wars? The RV world needs to thank President Reagan for his fight to save GPS and mapping of the country, some old crusty dems you see even today fought to remove it. Busses are a lot nicer and safer than most Class A. A buss is built as a solid bus, a Class A often is built to last only a few years. The nice thing about the tires on the buss is they will still have tread on them when they age out in 8-10 years.
You guys are GREAT!! love your channel. Are there any engine upgrades that can be done to give you more power for hills, short of a complete engine swap? It would be nice to know as you have peeked my interest in vintage Blue Birds, I'm already in ot antique cars so why not. Have fun and be safe.
I also graduated High School, such a great time to grow up in Southern California or just about anywhere in our country, but especially in Southern California. The GMC you guys had on your 1984 montages was a bit to early or late? I'm sure the GMC came out in the early 1970s, but still very cool of course. I'm currently looking for a older Bluebird Wonderlodge, late 90s preferably, 40 footer wide body would be nice. Take care. Hawk out!!
Marc’s mom was in a commercial? I was hoping Marc was going to be in the Magnum PI clip. Looks like Charlie has claimed the former propane bay. I like the it is now non-propane. Remember, it drives slow because the National Speed Limit for all vehicles was 55mph. Gary was doing well until he lost it. Thank you for sharing and have a great day.
In the early 90s my neighbor had that same “no puffin please” decal on their front door. Must have been a fairly popular campaign for a while. Definitely nostalgic.
Ahhh the 80’s. There will never be another time like it. It’s when KFC was using herbs and spices, when food wasn’t poison, when America had more moral values than today, when economic times were good, when things were made in the USA, when the Brit’s ruled the pop and rock charts, when Michael Jackson was black 🤣, when music was quality and meaningful, when TV sitcoms, commercials and movies had substance, when modesty was still honorable, when immortality stayed in the closet thank God….the list goes on. What a time it was.
So fun! I drove school bus for 23 years. Thanks for the reminder to just get started. I love my little trailer but am getting ready to sell and go a little bigger and have a slide for longer travel times! Hugs to all, hope to see you sometime.
Love Gary's perspective! I can't wait for the PNW adventures as I have spent a considerable amount of time exploring Olympic National Park and Mt Rainier to a lesser extent. Cheers!
Trish, I LOVE your hair! Marc, OMG you outdid yourself with the commercial breaks!!!! That was so cool! Such an enjoyable episode! I miss the 80’s!!!

We tried!
Great video but what does the 84 bird smell like inside??? Does is smell like grandma's house????
Sounds like the DC compressor fridge is a game changer! I am so tired of the inconsistent temperature in the fridge in the truck camper I bought in 2020, I’m ready to yank it out and replace it with a compressor style fridge
Thank you for the tour. Trish, I have used a lot of your storage ideas in our rig, Thank You. Keep enjoying the journey. We are loving it. Mary 💕 Fred
It is January 14th 2022 and it is 1:36 PM are you on highway 98 and 331 Is in Florida in the panhandle???
Just saw an airstream go by with a silver pick up truck and I swore the driver looked just like you lol!
I wish! Platinum Ginger and the Cowboy Limousine are still in heated storage.
What happened to all the travel on route 66. I think I missed a few episodes because the last three weeks have been just filler content.
You didn’t miss anything… it hasn’t been posted
Holidays and family mostly.
Rv builders need to watch this and learn what they got right as inspiration for new design
Great video! Agree, best for newbies to start “simpler” before they dip their toe in the rolling-museum club (or have a good friend who’s done it 😎).
84 hah???? Wasn't even born yet 😆 Love the bus and the channel!!!
Marc have you checked the throttle linkage? I know you are using a bungee cord to return to idle.
Wow, 1984 was a big year. I saw The Never Ending Story film came out then. Great. That and Ghostbusters really puts things into perspective.
She said “Grody” another thing from 1984 lol
You just had to do it ……..just had to remind me how old I am 🙄
Class of 85 here 🥺
Glad you are back, you were very missed !
we have a 1998 Holiday Rambler Endeavor class A Motor home, we have lived in it full time with our dogs and cat and recently ventured in it on Route 66, in Oklahoma, Kansas, and a little Missouri, visited Branson MO, and (Mayberry) Mount Airy NC
Super well-done episode! - I actually remembered most of those '84 flashbacks! - Thanks!
Glad your back we missed you!
🏆Thanks!
Many folks cut down the dinette as most of the time its only 2 people, I have mine cut down but it slides in and out so I can add cushions and have 4 people or push it in and it gives you room in the kitchen.
close to a million dollars in todays money.
And check out Gino's channel, lots to see!
I think dogs do that so they will not miss anything and force you to acknowledge them. Our Golden did it and so does our Aussie. 👀
The older I get the better those olden days seem. Thanks for the tours, the bus and life. Looking forward to more adventures.
We put our dish drainer in the 1/4 sheet pan & can put it off to the side so you can use the sink. Both items you showed you love in the RV.❤❤
❤❤❤ thanks for the tip!
Okay, gotta know which person in the montage is Marc’s mom. Ah, found it. I had to back track. I thought that was the commercial. 😊💕
Great job on the 1984 flashback!
Loved this episode. Brought a smile to my face, andva tear to my eye. Thank you 😊
Thanks for the tour! Loved the flashback of 1984, which was graduation year for me.
Was that really Marc’s mom in that Mr Clean commercial?
"Thaaat's right!" ;) Family joke.
Take care. Hawk out!!
A 1984 retrospective WITHOUT Van Halen's "Jump"?? Grrr!
Fun Fact: That GMC motorhome was used in the Bill Murray / Harold Ramis movie "Stripes".
Awesome video... thanks guys for the flash back.. lol👍😁🇺🇸
In the early 90s my neighbor had that same “no puffin please” decal on their front door. Must have been a fairly popular campaign for a while. Definitely nostalgic.
Happy Sunday KYD family! Sending lots of love
That's the superbowl of 80's commercials lol. I'm sure it ignited memories for many people.
Got married in 1984 as high school sweethearts. Still married, two boys and 3 grandchildren later. Just bought our first RV!! Love your channel
Love the commercials! We were married in 84, one question, where Does Caleb sleep? ♥️♥️♥️♥️
LOVED THIS ONE KYD KREW !! 1984 was a great year as I was in little league haha.
If your travels are bringing you to California I would certainly love to just meet up get acquainted and say hi. Thomyt
Welcome back! It's going to be exciting!!🤗
P.S. Loved seeing the 80’s commercials and TV shows!❤️
I was a JR&SR high school in 1984....feels like just yesterday!
So fun! I drove school bus for 23 years. Thanks for the reminder to just get started. I love my little trailer but am getting ready to sell and go a little bigger and have a slide for longer travel times! Hugs to all, hope to see you sometime.
Is it sad that I remember those movie/commercial clips from 84? Wow- so many memories.
But you didn't dress 80's. Trish could have feathered her hair. Mark might be a little more difficult to style. Thoughts?
My first child was born in 1984. Love the reminder of all that was going on back then🥰😂😂. Love this💕
Hey Marc, I remember your very first rig, and tires. Do you carry a spare for the Old Bird just in case you get a flat?
Just finished my 1st 4 years in the Air Force at Myrtle Beach AFB S.C. in 84, seems like yesterday. Enjoyed the tour and content! Until the next!
Love Gary's perspective! I can't wait for the PNW adventures as I have spent a considerable amount of time exploring Olympic National Park and Mt Rainier to a lesser extent. Cheers!
