    ℹ️ About the Episode
If you've been with us for any amount of time, you know Trish does most of the driving. She enjoys towing with our Super Duty ... but when it comes to driving the Bird, her response was clear, "I'm out!" Driving large equipment does take some getting used to and we receive countless emails about how to help a spouse become more comfortable with driving a motorized RV or towing. Perhaps we should have followed some of the tips below so Trish would be more comfortable with driving the Bird! In this episode, we travel Route 66 from the mid-point in Adrian, TX to the Blue Hole in New Mexico and then to Santa Fe. We visit the decommissioned Musical Highway before making our way to the Petrified Forest National Park and then a particular corner in Winslow Arizona. Join us next week for the season finale of Route 66 in Santa Monica California.

It's important to know your limitations. Old units like this are exhausting. You are correcting and over correcting all the time. I had a 37 ft class A over 24 years ago. We had to install a steer straight product but driving was exhausting.

As a kid very little kid I was driving our semi trucks and backing them out of the garage and warming them up for my dad before we would make a load so I could not wait to drive our wanderlodges on the actual highway so soon as I got my permit at 14 daddy let me drive 100 or so miles while mom was taking a nap. That was the coolest thing to me and very special that daddy believed in me enough to trust me with his pride and joy that he worked so hard for. That was my first time and been driving them every since. Y’all be safe.

“Come on Gary, get your head glued on straight, Trish is nervous driving, Charlie got the poop scared out of him, Marc can’t keep track of the car and Caleb, well he’s being Caleb, somebody’s gotta keep this show on the road” 🤣🤣🤣
I’m willing to bet the car “rolling” backwards was Calebs idea 🧐

Oh Trish. Thank you for allowing your experience to be shown. It made you more REAL. I have sold my sticks & bricks and will depart with a 32 ft. fiver, solo, later this year, (haven't pulled it yet). My previous experience was with a 16 ft. TT in 1979 when I headed out full time. So, I whole heartedly relate to your recent experience as I attempt to reassure myself that it will be OK. PS. I stayed in a KOA, in Selma NC, 1979 with full hookups for $7.35 per night !

Funny thing, I don't have an RV yet but I'm watching RV you tubes non stop. I tested drive a class A motorhome with V8 engine and it runs smooth like butter. I can't wait to buy it and drive 7 miles of it. My husband is already nervous and having severe anxiety.

Get Your Kicks On Route 66! We've been up and down it a many times and the Wife and I are both Native Los Angeles Californians! Now we are Native Northern Wine Country Californians! Our favorite spot on Route 66 is Flagstaff Arizona! We attend South Dakota's Sturgis Motorcycle Rally every year since 2005 and for 5 years coming from Granada Hills, CA, (suburb of L.A.) We would always stay at Black Bart's RV Park and Dinner Theater for at least 2 or 3 days and ride our Harley Davidson FatBoy to Sedona, Jerome. Prescott and back via Oak Creek Canyon!

This turned out to be a really funny video guys. The car leaving on it's own was hysterical. Then Gary loosing his head. I nearly lost it when Trish was doing CPR on a headless Gary. It was beautiful watching the sunset as you headed ever west into the night. It got kind of silly as the evening wore on but I've learned that's what happens after a long day of driving. This was a super great video guys. Sorry it didn't go well for Trish driving. A loose steering wheel can be a bummer. Looking forward to Gary getting his head back. haha

Well we didn't fair so well with the Graffiti bridge on 17th Ave in Pensacola, FL! Lost the A/C unit on our Class A rental, and ended up in Milton for 6 weeks waiting to get it repaired. Bridge is infamous in the area for some such accidents. There was no sign giving the height, and the sign "Low Bridge" was covered with graffiti. We met many RVers as they came and went from the campground. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting. And before the pandemic! Such is life! It made for interesting and entertaining fodder for my husband's travel blog for the folks back home and around the world. ;) HA! And I just remembered we got 26" of snow within hours of returning it when we got home!! Like Tricia, we were so glad to get home!

I just wanted to pass along a quick tip on driving a bigger RV. When driving down the road, in your lane you will see where the road is worn down more(lighter) from other truck tires and it is darker in the middle of those tracks. Just align yourself and the steering wheel to be on the left side of the dark portion of the road and it will help you stay in your lane especially at night. I hope this helps Trish out and she can be more relaxed and enjoy the journey!!!!

Poor Gary! No shame in needing to get used to a loose steering wheel, it’s upright and big and loose. I took our rig out on our small country roads to learn its feel. Plus our Expedition can really book it, I have to watch it’s speed. One day we will do Rt. 66. Currently parked at our daughters’ house until I graduate with a Masters in Nursing. Can’t wait to hit the road again in May.

Kudos to Tricia for trying and being a responsible driver. It is super stressful to drive under the blanket of fear - no bueno. The first I would have to have would be a booster seat (I am down to 5'). It is a climb into our Ford 250 (Trailer pkg.), but once in the seat, I can adjust the pedals, seat, steering wheel, mirrors & radio to drive safely and happily. I love to shop for Turquoise jewelry at Governor's Plaza from the locals. Tell Gary it isn't worth losing his head over...!

We just returned from a four and a half trip, covering much of the same route, and I have to say this episode epitomizes "a day in the life" of an RVer. The highs, (finding what you have looked forward to - Winslow) the lows, (what you wanted to see is closed or the wait is long) the unknown, (I think our height is good????) meeting great people, (we sold our home and will find out what comes next) pushing too long and being too tired when you have to, and THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME! Gary's CPR was the funniest thing you have ever done!!!

Yes a great memory, my dad cooking beans on the manifold in the early 50s. We went back and forth from Sunnyvale CA to phoenix AZ many times.

I live in Edgewood. The musical hwy does work. You just have to have your tire on it perfectly. I take 66 to abq all the time and hit it on my return trip. Once you hit the black spot you missed it, that was the first one they messed up lol. Another great video though… :)

Trish, old trucker trick. Put your left foot against the left side of the wall as far as you can then picture driving your left foot down the white line. Eventually you won’t have to do that… you’ll have the feel.

OMWord, this episode was so dang funny! When the car started drifting away, I about lost it, the the second time had me losing it all over again. Poor Gary losing his head, I couldn't believe it! lol No reviving Gary until his head is back on Trish, which I hope is soon. Beautiful scenery, love seeing the flashbacks, your silly evening-aren't we all like that when we are tired?? Just loved everything, but then I always do. You guys always leave us wanting more and waiting breathlessly for the next episode. This Rt 66 series has been so fun, thanks for always taking us along. Trish, hopefully you will be able to drive the Bird when not so much is happening on the road, I'm sure it is just getting used to the feel and where things need to be to be in the center of your lane. I'm in awe of you anyway because I doubt I would have even tried! Hugs, Brenda

I’m watching tonight’s episode and noticed what looked like too much play in the steering when Trish was driving the bird. I’m not a mechanic by trade but have owned many old American cars that I restored and drove. The one common thing I found on these cars was worn gears in the steering box a simple adjustment was all it needed. Just some food for thought.
From a big fan of your show, Mr G.

That's true and you're right, but with some practice, I lock it in and keep my elbows on the arm rest. Free handing it with wind can be a bit tricky.

Beasts take time to get them under control. Keep trying Trish! Love the videos. Keep them coming please. You guys are great. 🚌

I also hated driving my dads 45 foot Class A . He kept saying the same thing watch the white line in the mirror and I kept saying “ if I’m watching the white line, I’m not watching the road!” For me it wasn’t that the motorhome was so large, it was that there was no nose in front of me to use as a guide. You did right Trish by pulling over, you kept everyone safe.

Concrete Walls turn highways into roller coasters! I wish I could avoid them, but then I'd be on the road for double the time. Have you had the pleasure of driving in Houston, DFW, or Austin? Its a blast!

Reminds me of my son trying out my Dad's old Dodge pickup....lots of on center play (nothing wrong just how it is) and my son saying...it does handle differently than my car.....he was being a bit charitable since it was Grandpa's pickup.

Clines Corner is so wonderful! Are truck was having mechanical problems and we hobbled to Clines Corners. The tow guy, the mechanics in Moriarty were the friendliest and most accommodating human beings. We stayed for two days at Clines Corners for $25.00 a night. Full hook up. I prayed please get us to the next exit. Gas, food and Rv park. Thank you, Lord!
