    Every so often ... there is a moment in a video ... where something happens ... and Joseph has these looks on his face ...towards YOU! Kalyn... and we all get to see ... that he ... just ... absolutely ... adores you Kalyn. So happy for both of you! Living your Dream & the love really shines through!

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  Місяць тому +11

      She gives me those looks too. 😉
      It's funny because the first example that always pops in my head of those "looks" is in one of our videos. If you watch the beet harvest video where I'm struggling to fix my truck there is a spot where she says "I thought cutting the line was the stupid part." So many people missed what really happened in that moment. I was stressed. I was tired. I was anxious. Kalyn knew (intuitively) that what I needed most was a moment to laugh...a moment of putting life in perspective....and she nailed it. Probably not the best line for every guy out there in that moment...but she just knows me perfectly.
      The looks I give are just me knowing that I totally married a woman out of my league. -J

    I love watching you guys! I'm especially interested in your Alaskan Adventure as I am an ex-Alaskan (30 years). I left 20 years ago and it is amazing at how much has changed. I laugh every time I see the sign post forest near Watson Lake. We first drove the Alcan in 1973 and the "sign post forest" was 4 poles on the side of the road with a few license plates on it. I used to have a photo of it but it got lost somewhere over the years. Can't wait to see what is next in your adventure! Stay safe and have a blast!

Even though we were driving the speed limit and maybe five over, the RVs that passed us, some flying, and no exaggeration. you could actually see their tires come off the ground. I'm a mechanic, with that being said... Do not run your truck low on fuel. The fuel helps to
    keep you fuel injectors cooler, lubricated, and reduces wear on them. Try and keep your fuel tank
    over 1/4 or more full.
    Another thing when fuel gets low below 1/4 it agitates the trash on the very bottom of the fuel tank
    causing your fuel filter to clog faster.

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  Місяць тому +1

      You are the expert on this not me. I'm fully aware of this.
      I have a couple questions:
      How does the level of fuel in my tank affect the temperature of the injectors? Is the fuel cooler the more there is in the tank? If so how much cooler? We talking 3 degrees or 30?
      My fuel pump has 262,000 miles on it and I'm responsible for somewhere around 130,000 of those miles. Isn't that pretty good life out of a fuel pump? I've been told over and over that this thing should have blown up and sent metal shards through my engine by now (being a 2012 F250 and all)...but it hasn't. It might tomorrow! But it hasn't yet.
      I personally replace my fuel filter at the recommended intervals and last fall I dropped my tank (long story that's documented in the beet harvest series) but in that process I got a good look inside my tank and if it wasn't fuel...you could have drank out of the tank. Now of course that could change with one set of bad fuel.
      Again - You are a mechanic and I believe that you are telling me the absolute best practice and that your information is 100% correct. I cannot say that enough.
      But there are many "Best practices" in life that I don't always follow. Sometimes for good reasons, sometimes because I'm stubborn. 😂 I fully admit that.
      How it comes across to me sometimes is that if I don't follow those best practices then I am 100% going to destroy my truck next week when I believe in reality I may be shaving 1-2K miles off the life of my fuel pump and/or truck. Much like eating the junk food instead of a vegetable today. No the Twix bar isn't going to give me a heart attack and I should eat the vegetable...but the health influencer on UA-cam is going a bit far when they tell me I'm going to die from the sugar when in reality maybe I just shaved a few minutes off my life (assuming I don't die in a car crash when my fuel pump gives out) 😉.
      But again, I am 100% NOT the expert (Have I said this enough? I just want to be clear for anyone reading this that I am NOT the mechanic in this conversation! lol) - and I am the one that will 100% deal with the consequences (good or bad) of the decisions I make regarding the maintenance of my truck and I DO take note and listen to the advice of actual experts like yourself even though I may not always heed it. -J

    I recognized everywhere you went because I drove to Alaska in early May & returned in early June. I drove up the Stewart-Cassiar to Watson Lake & on the wy back I did the Alaska highway to Dawson Creek. I agree on the roads, further south were better but there were good & bad parts in the Yukon & Alaska both. I did the trip in a Cayenne & stayed in motels. Next time, it's a van camper. I look forward to seeing the rest of your videos about the trip. Cheers!

    Full disclosure - I'm the queen of multi-tasking and my brain went into over drive when you mentioned that you couldn't work while traveling (specifically while driving). So here are some of the things I like to do when I'm in the same situation (obviously these suggestions are for the passenger although of course you can trade off so each of you get a turn doing the task you need to do):
    Use a note taking app to record notes, ideas, outlines, flesh out outlines.
    Answer emails, reply to comments.
    Network - read posts, comment on them.
    Research - I like to use two devices, one to do the research and the other to take notes
    Edit videos or at least do a first pass.
    Well now I'm further into the video and it looks like you don't need these suggestions - you've got it down.
    Happy traveling!

    I get the 4 day setup/take down rush! When I'm doing my long motorcycle trips I'd try to save money camping instead of a hotel, but I found I lost a LOT of time setting up and tearing down camp if I'm sandwiched between travel days. So if I'm doing that usually I'll find a hotel, because I think I lose 1 to 2 hours at night and again in the morning just because I camped instead of like, 20 minutes in a hotel.....but I pay for it lol.

    I would agree re RV speed contributing to problems.
    How many tire blow outs are at 60 mph with proper axle weights and properly inflated tires? Not too many I would guess.
    More likely blowouts happen at 70 mph+ with under inflated tires, and improperly balanced trailer loading.

    Never put plexiglass over the windshield. Back in 1972, my parents got a camper and drove the AlCan highway. Someone had told him to tie a piece of plexiglass over the windshield to prevent windshield cracks. He did that until a gas station attendant told him to remove it if he wanted to live. He told dad about a family in a Winnebago that had plexiglass, got in a rainstorm and someone passing splashed mud on the front. The guy turned on his wipers to clear the mud, which scratched the plexiglass. Not being able to see, he accidentally drove off a cliff, killing his entire family. Dad threw away the plexiglass and eventually got a cracked windshield.😮
