I saw the title and thought "Well, for me it's my LX100 that's in my handbag pretty much all the time." Clicked on the video and when you showed the camera, I just laughed. It's such a great little thing. I've had it for a few years now and I love it to bits.

Yesss. Lumix need to update their compact MFT camera lineups- GX and LX. That G9ii sensor, PDAF, full weather sealing and updated modern features. One thing i love to see is that newly launched Real time lut feature. That would be so much fun for an EDC cam. We could create our own recipes and share them like fuji community. Just perfect. And about the flash being on-camera, Either they can only add a small weak one like in fujifilm x100 ( which can be way too lower and causes shadow of lens on subject ) or change the dial layout with manual shutterspeed dial to give some real estate for the one like in gx85. A tiltable display without huge bazels will give us plenty of screen space. Why can't any cameras can't do this?? I dont know. Smartphones could do it. And maybe a pop up EVF like in sony rx series would be a good idea to go along with that. Since leica d lux 8 is out ,maybe something is coming from panny boy too😂. Lets hope.

Today I lent my LX7 to the teenage son of a friend who is interested in exploring photography. A DLSR is probably too big for the throw in a pocket and go cycling or snowboarding, but a compact camera like the LX7 might be the gateway camera helping him to decided if and what to buy next. I mentioned the LX100 as a possible option if he liked the form factor and Panasonic configuration.

I bought the LX-100 back in early 2015, and it has been a favorite of mine! When my son and his wife made a trip to Mexico a few years back, it ended up being damaged somewhere along the way and, though it still takes great photos, the rear screen no longer works. I happened to find a Leica D-Lux Typ 109 for a really great price, so I picked it up to use while the LX-100 was waiting to be fixed. Aside from a few minor interface differences, I find that the Leica's RAW files seem identical, but the JPEG files are quite different and, in my opinion, much improved over the Panasonic's. A minor detail, though, as I routinely edit the RAW files for my files.
I agree, though, that it has very little to improve upon, and I have found nothing to tempt me away from it! 😁

My first interchangeable lens camera was an Olympus EPL-5 in like 2013 and I think I took some of my best photos with it using a lens converter and old lenses. I used it until it broke and swapped over to a fujifilm xt20 in 2018 but I’ve never quite felt as bonded with it! I might be tempted to look at what deals I can get on a M4/3 camera to see how they’ve developed over the past 12 years :D

I think, somehow, that it seems a little fragile. I'm often afraid of being too hard on it
    - With the long lens.
And the rings on the lens.
Yes, I also have problems with dust on the lens. Maybe don't have quite the patience to have the lens vacuumed. Feels like it has to be done many times...
But I really like it, for the same reasons as you. It is a unique travel camera. And I have also shot some really good evening/night pictures with it.

This is a great camera, I used to have one but was forced to sell it when the Firmware corrupted itself and would randomly shut off. Panasonic did not release (atleast at the time) a user flashable Firmware update for the LX100 (mark I) and I didn't want to wait 2 months to send it to see if Panasonic would flash it at the factory and pay several hundreds of dollars to do something I should be able to do for Free :/.
That said, I wound up replacing my LX100 with a Panasonic ZS100 which sacrificed the faster lens for a 10x optical zoom (which is a really useful range for just about every situation) and a smaller sensor. Most importantly, Panasonic DID release a Firmware update for the ZS100 so if I run into firmware issues I can fix it myself.
In any case, Panasonic makes solid, amazing point and shoot cameras that often get overshadowed and overlooked (By Sony, Fuji and Ricoh's compacts). They are often a lot easier to find without having to buy from scalpers online (As in the case with the Fuji X100 series) or are priced out of most people's budgets (Sony RX100 and RX0). I highly recommend anyone looking for a pocket camera that can go the distance to look into Panasonic's offerings and agree wholeheartedly with OMTC here!

Bought my LX100 right after the launch, and probably will never sell it. It is an almost perfect EDC camera (and, yes, I had a X100S once). Great video, as usual. 🙂
Some opinions from an old time user:
    - About the dust problem: I never had. Don't know if it is just luck, or maybe my hypothesis about the problem - the lens collect the dust when the lens is contracted, and the dust sucks in when the lens protrudes and closes. I have this theory because I've bought a JJC "automatic" petal hood together with the camera (I hate lens caps), use with it since the beginning, and never had dust problems. The cap is cheap, pratical, and very recommended.
    - The sensor is not oversized - it is the regular 16mp sensor (the same as the GX85), and the image circle of the lens does not cover it all, hence the 12mp final resolution. For me, a stellar compromise - since the lens could be smaller;
    - I'm the opposite of you - I hate the camera JPGs 🙂 Think they are kinda mushy, even putting the NR in -5, and the color science is from the GH4 era. Like much more the color from the GX85 and specially from the GX9, which have the G9 MK I color science. It only bother people like me that don't like too much to do RAW developing anymore - but the RAWs are flawless and very detailed.
    - The MK II have some good advances - it uses the 20mp sensor (hence the output is now 17mp), have the G9 color science, and the screen have touch (useful to change the focus point, or use it as a touchped when using the EVF. Looking for one to buy for ages, but the used prices are insane.
    - The LX100 is a capable video camera too! The most seen video on my channel, by far, was from a Chemical Brothers concert that looked amazing with this camera.
This camera is legendary. Panasonic is VERY dumb to do not a version with the G9 MK II internal, a better EVF, and a tilt screen. It is a MUCH more versatile camera than the X100 line, because it have a zoom. Love mine to death.
Regards and keep doing your videos - I love them.

I just watched this video. I also have an X-T3 and 5 lenses and an LX100 II. I went to France for two weeks and left the Fuji at home. I never used the LX100 extensively and in those two weeks, I absolutely fell in love with it.

Hi did you try canon m6 mark II

  • @uncertainrelease
    @uncertainrelease 3 місяці тому

I don't own this camera, but this is the camera I've gifted to my mother as a birthday gift a few years back (when they were still affordable, I think I paid 150€ for it)
So it's not my camera, however my mom is a pretty lazy photographer, meaning that she's much more likely to grab whatever is the nearest, and generally that's her phone, and absolutely not here camera. So heh, I borrowed it a few times (more than that actually) for comparison purposes, mostly because I have compact cameras of mine and I wanted to see if maybe I should not get an LX100 for myself.
Used it for a few months (!) as my EDC camera, and compared it with my other small(ish) cameras : my Lumix LX5 and my Fuji X100S.
So, I like the camera, but I always found that it was a little off the mark. Like the sensor is decent, but I can't really have high dynamic range or push things in low light, at least not to the extend I'm used to with APS-C.
The lens is sharp, but wide open it can get a little soft, meanwhile the lens on my LX5 is sharp across the board, as well as having a 24-90mm equivalent instead of a 24-75. I'm a sucker for longer than 85mm lenses, so that extra reach on the LX5 is really paying dividends. But really the biggest thing about this lens that rubs me a little wrong is really the flaring. It's not a nice looking flare, it's very distracting, and if the sun enters your lens the wrong way you get a massive loss of contrast. I don't have anything of the sort on my LX5, and I feel like this happens less often with the X100S as well. Also, I feel like the colors out of my Fuji are better, same thing about the colors out of my CCD LX5. Surprisingly, I can push the LX5 to like ISO 1250 or something, and I would stop at ISO 1600 on the LX100 which to me isn't really a meaningful diffrence at all.
I'm not particularly enamoured with the EVF of the LX100, I'm happy it's there but it's really not great quality, I don't like the fact that it's not OLED and uses a 16:9 aspect ratio, meaning that shooting 4:3 you get huge black (dark grey) bars on the left and right. You think the EVF is of a decent size, but it's actually not. I would have prefered to have an integrated flash instead of the EVF. This is exactly what the LX5 is doing, with the EVF being external. It's a very crappy one (which I bought), but hey at the very least you can use it only when you need it, and it means I have a pop-up flash in the camera. The X100S has both intgrated flash and decent EVF (with an amazing OVF).
The X100S is a tad bit larger, the LX5 is litterally GR3 sized, LX100 is in the middle of those two. I found that if all I wanted was to have an EDC, then I would either get the X100S because the prime lens means it's very fast sto start-up, you don't have to wait until the lens is extended to start shooting, or the LX5 cause I could fit it in my pocket. I can't really fit the LX100 in my pants pocket at all, so I'd probably use my X100S instead any way.
I feel like the LX100 hit so many right points for me, but was never enough to make me buy one, and the things that actually make me click, will make me overlook any other defect that a camera could have : the X100S for example, it not the most usable camera around and has by far the slowest AF out of those 3 cameras. But it starts quick, has a good EVF/OVF, has the nice Fuji JPEGs, very good lens (for what I want) and despite the larger body it has a smaller footprint because of the smaller lens. Same thing about the LX5, it has the worst IQ there, interface is not the best and controls are a bit of a mess, but it's super small and would fit in places where the LX100 wouldn't. And the lens has more reach + it has a pop up flsh which makes me more comfortable about the versatility without taking any other accessory with me.
It's a good camera, but I guess I was spoiled by other options and I can't go back.
(by the way the mark II has pretty decent upgrades : the sensor is better, you go from the 16MP MFT sensor (that you can use only 12MP of it) to the much more modern 20MP one (which this time you can use 17MP of it). It has better dynamic range, better noise levels, and faster AF. Everything else is basically the same (except the grip which was changed to a hard plastic instead of the grippy one on the first version??, and the addition of a few rubber rings in the lens to keep the dust out. As for the D-Lux 8, from what I can tell, the only major differences there is with the D-Lux 7 / LX100II are the presence of an OLED EVF instead of the TFT one that is in the LX100II, and the change of the menu system and control structure, making it basically identical to the Leica Q3))

Bought the dlux version for 70 us with a broken lens, learned to do a little camera repair and now I have one that works for like 300, sits on the shelf mainly. I am going to dust it off and use it untill I understand it. One big problem with these guys is that the lens sucks in dust when you turn it on. The lens it came with is so mouldy that some of my favourite photos are me taking images of the ecosystem growing inside it. Might be a good idea to get the 3 door lens cap.

The Original LX 100 (Leica D-Lux Typ 109) is actually better than the LX 100 II (Leica D-Lux 7) in terms of Color Science as well as Low-Light Capability because the Sensor of the LX 100 II was changed and produced in China. It has less of the Leica Look although the Lens is a gem.
The Automatic Mode on the Leica D-Lux Typ 109 gives you that "Leica Look" in a way the Program Mode doesn´t usually do. The Monochrome and Dynamic Monochrome Mode on the D-Lux Typ 109 are amazing though. Not sure if the Panasonic Version has that, too.
For Low-Light, the D-Lux 7 is actually worse, too, because it´s 16MP instead of 12MP. The 12 Megapixels are bigger for the same size Sensor (Micro Four Thirds).
Love the Leica D-Lux Typ 109 (the equivalent to the Panasonic LX 100) to bits for the Lens, Colors, Size, Low-Light-Capability and Ease of Use. It´s actually more of a Leica than some of their newer Models. Thanks for your Video!

I did a model test shoot with the D Lux 7 two days ago and couldn’t get on with it at all… the auto brightness is cool but I really struggled in sunlight, the face detect only works when you’re quite close? I also prefer the Center point and recompose. Compared to my XT30 II from Fuji it felt weak and the menu is a lot even though people claim Leica is so easy to set up?
Changing the display brightness isn’t even possible in the Q menu and in sunlight I struggled stopping the camera down without increasing to f8 or higher so maybe I will need to take my ND filter more often. I loved the specs on paper but the menu was chaos for me idk. Maybe I’m just not skilled enough yet 😢

Who is the Guy using the Vacuum on the camera??? And does the Vacuum work to suck the dust off the sensor????? I Bought a very nice LEICA(not sure the name But it was one of this style) about 6 years ago,, it was used but with less than a thousand shutter activations,,, (the outside was very clean) BUT the dust was enough to make it a problem... I sent it back to LEICA USA and they cleaned it for free :).... I then did a deep dive and found out that this was a regular occurrence with this camera... I had (and still have (with no or nearly no visible dust) a D-LUX 5,, as well as an X-Vario,, Both with many shutter activations :) :) :) GREAT FIX if it really works !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the LX100 II. It’s an absolute jewel. It’s beautiful, it’s solid metal, lots of physical controls and it can produce gorgeous photos. Even Leica can be proud to claim it (and does). Maybe PDAF and a fast option for the motorized zoom could improve it, but it’s damn near perfect. Oh, I forgot! A LEAF shutter allowing fast sync speeds with the flash.

The biggest question for me is, why can't i buy this lens for M4/3? The similar sized 12 - 32 has an aperture of 3.5 to 5.6. For light travel, i tage the GF-5 with built-in flash, but without viewfinder.

I agree with everything you said in this review. I have a Fujifilm X-T3 with 5 lenses. I wanted a back up/second camera and wanted the same tactile feel of the X-T3 so I bought an LX100 II. I always took both when I traveled but this May my wife and I went to France for two weeks and I wanted to travel light. I left the Fuji at home and was forced to live with the LX 100 II. I absolutely love it. In tight places the 24-75mm zoom gives you great versatility that a fixed lens compact can't. I think the LX 100 II is worth the difference from the original for two main reasons. 1. The extra megapixels which give you nice shots in the Intelligent Zoom Mode (not Digital Zoom). In Intelligent Zoom the camera crops the sensor and your range extends from 75mm to 150mm. Because of the extra pixels from version 1, you get decent resolution at 150mm. 2. The newer model has a fully functioning touch screen.👍👍

The LX100 is a great camera! Having the hot shoe is a bonus on the LX100, seeing a Panasonic have ditched the hot shoe on many other "small" bodies (see the GF7/9/10 etc). S
lightly off the current camera... But I have to say that I got a steal today! A mint Olympus E-620, with 8GB CF, 14-42, 40-150 AND 30mm f3.5 macro. All boxed in new condition. And I mean new! When I unboxed it, it was still in factory settings. I put the 14-42 on it and fired a couple of shots to test it and when I checked the shutter count, they were the first shots ever taken with the camera! And all that lot cost me US$180. An absolute steal! Great Oly colour science!

I have Lumix S9. That camera, unfortunately, is a little bit bigger and heavier. But, when you change its setting to manual focus, as you rotate the focusing ring, in the rear screen, the focusing distance is indicated, like ∞, 5m, 3m, 2m, 1.5m and so on. After you set the focusing distance to, say, 5m, then you can choose the Focus Ring Lock: ON option from the menu so that the focusing distance is locked even though you accidentally touch the focus ring. Also, in the menu there is an option called the minimum shutter speed, where you can set that to, say, 1/125s, say under the aperture priority AE. When you do that, obviously, you may want to choose to set your ISO setting to the Auto ISO. (And you may want to choose to set the maximum ISO value in the menu.)

I have the Leica x2 that is a proper Leica made in Germany you can tell the difference with the picture quality.

My everyday carry cameras that I am rotating through include the Fuji F45fd, F40fd, F50fd, F20, and the F660EXR. They were bought used and cost me $64 max (the F660EXR). I keep them on a belt case but they are small enough to put in a front pants pocket.
