Costa Rica to Acapulco, MX in a Nordhavn 56 Motorsailer - Ep. 23

  • We are back! It’s been a few months but we have finally gotten back to scrubbing through footage and hope to be posting a lot more in he near future.
    This episode shows some of our passage from Marina Papagayo in norther Costa Rica to Acapulco Mexico. This was our second longest passage on the trip from Florida to Mexico at a little over 900 nautical miles. Nels (who helped bring the boat to Panama from Florida) returned to crew with his girlfriend Patty.
    We didn’t experience any of the notorious sustained offshore winds across the Gulf of Tehuantepec, but we did get hit by some squalls with gusts over 30 knots an at one point our mainsail ripped at a seam near the top and we had to pull the sail down for the duration of the passage. We didn’t get any footage of the actual event because we were too busy dealing with dousing the sail in pouring rain and high winds.
    We crossed through some really productive fishing grounds and caught Dorado and a big Sailfish (which we will show in another episode)
    In Acapulco, we managed to find someone to repair the sail and had an interesting experience taking on fuel.

      Cassidy's Sailing Trawler < I’m curious about the operational aspect of your motor sailer. I assume you augment the sail with the motor. Does the boat feel more stable under sail vs. power. Do you use the stabilization under sail (suspect not). What sort of range do you plan for now.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  4 роки тому +7

      Judd S - the 56MS does not have any fin stabilizers like a lot of the traditional trawlers do. She relies on presenting some amount of sail to the wind for stabilization. There are times when I would really love to have the option to push a button and stabilize the boat but the tradeoff would be a lot of wetted area drag when trying to sail. The hull is very very efficient.
      Worst possible conditions for this boat are low single digit apparent wind and a direct beam sea. She rolls on a long period with relatively high amplitude. Its a learning curve on what to do in those conditions. What we have learned is that going to windward or even if it is really light air, a reefed close hauled main will usually generate enough lift to stabilize the boat.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  4 роки тому +2

      HardTargert - we really like this boat so far. Has a familiar Nordhavn feel but is very different than the N40. I don't think there is honesty a huge financial benefit from having the sailing rig. Its a big rig to maintain and the sails will not be inexpensive when we need to replace them. I've heard ballpark figures of $15-$25k which would buy a lot of diesel.
      I think that the real benefit of the sailing rig is virtually unlimited range with the right wind conditions, and a truly redundant form of propulsion vs. a wing engine that is reliant on the same fuel as a main engine.

    • @ITHINKUREALESUK
      @ITHINKUREALESUK 4 роки тому

      Cassidy's Sailing Trawler valid point on the unlimited range. I never thought about a backup engine using the same fuel. That’s a great point, bad fuel problems would be crippling. Thank you for the thoughtful answer to my questions. I learned something new as a result. Appreciate it. Stay safe out there, fair winds sir.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler

      Gary Cummings - 21.40 pesos/liter sounds about right. Our total fuel bill there was over $3,000 USD for a little under 700 gallons of diesel. Most expensive fuel of the entire trip and it was serious hassle to take on!

    Hi Dougal. I met you in Dana Point during the NFF. I was wondering what brand and model you have for your folding bikes as I've been looking for something similar. Also, are there particular features you found very useful on the bikes?

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  4 роки тому +1

      +John Wilson - we used Rad Minis from Rad Power Bikes who are based in Seattle but the bikes are online order only - I don’t think they are available in retail stores.
      Overall we really liked the bikes as far as functionality. Huge amount of cargo carrying capability great ride on most terrain including soft sand and even snow.
      Down sides are a few - they are very heavy at 60 lbs each so handling them on and off of the boat was a bit of work - to the extent that we ended up not taking them out as often as we thought we would. The other thing is that they have a traditionally drive train with a derailleur in the back and exposed chain so it’s something that requires constant care in a salt water environment. We rinsed ans sorayed then wirh corrosion x pretty religiously and kept covered on the deck in custom made bags.
      If money was no object I’d look at the various models from Gocycle. Great engineering and they are magnesium and have en enclosed belt drive. Also about half the weight of the Rad Minis.

    Hello Cassidy's Sailing Trawler, I have asked this question in the past and wish to ask again because my wife and I are in the market for our retirement yacht and I personally find myself attracted to the N56. Does/has this vessel met your expectations and why? Kind regards, John from PNW ( we used to live in San Diego for 30 years and miss it!)

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  4 роки тому

      We really like the boat so far. The efficiency and smooth ride into headseas are just amazing for a boat of this size. The other thing that I really like is the truly redundant source of propulsion that the sailing rig brings - plus the increased range as an added benefit. We didn't have any sailing background and the rig is totally manageable - even single handed in good conditions.
      A couple things that are a compromise - the galley is relatively small for a boat of this size, and the you lose the larger high up exterior spaces that are available on the trawlers like the boat deck and the flying bridge on the boats that have the exterior bridge. There is a lot of room on top of the pilothouse though and when the tender is in the water its another place to hang out while anchored. And the foredeck is absolutely huge.

    • @pointdoc1
      @pointdoc1 4 роки тому

      Thank you so very much for your reply! I have been reviewing the N56 for some time. I currently cannot narrow down what I wish to pursue. I can make a case for trawlers, semi-displacements, mono and cat sailers. I really like the Krogens, but also like the roominess of Nordhavns. With your input (which has confirmed my suspicions), I will once again move the N56 back to the top of my "A" list. Kind regards,

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  4 роки тому +1

      Brian Litz - totally fair question. It does not actually need a lot of wind. The unfortunate reality is that the apparent wind was well ahead of the beam for almost the entire trip from Florida to Panama and then north to Baja so we were motorsailing close hauled almost the entire way. We were also on a delivery type schedule with rotating crew and requirements from insurance to get north of the hurricane latitudes by July 1 so there wasn't really much opportunity to steer away from the wind.
      We are definitely looking forward to getting out and actually sailing her. When we turn around and head back south along Baja that should be a really good test of the actual pure sailing capabilities of the boat.

    Low tech is the best tech... Got it done. Or - pull the drone out for Amazon pay.

      Paul Muller - there is definitely something to be said for low-tech, i.e. not relying on technology so that if something fails you can still get a task accomplished. But this was borderline ridiculous. And the whole operation was well established and it was obvious that people there are just used to it.
      It could still be simple but better than what they have in place. Even just a mechanical gantry that passes the hose and bill/payment without throwing it across a polluted harbor would be relatively simple.
      We learn to just roll with what we are presented with while traveling though and it always seems to work out if you are flexible and have an open mind....

    I our high tech and efficient world, you would probably still be waiting to refuel.........There was a case, some month ago, tha a full sailing vessel (Tres Hombres), enginless, was refused entry in one port because no one ever thought that a commercial pure sailing vessel could be in existence so no one was capable to make a decision. So far for our efficient world. If not on check lists, our brains are blank.

    6:16 "The way they handled payment and sending us the bill was nothing short of comical". Actually, it was resourceful and innovative, and clearly efficient. Anyone else hearing the undercurrent of prejudice in this guys entire narrative?

      Harbour Dog - Prejudice? That sounds like your own issue - is that because we happened to be in Mexico? The same commentary would apply to the way they handled payment of it was in the US or anywhere else in the world for that matter.
