animal494 - that is correct. It’s a little confusing to follow the saga because apparently Nordhavn gave him a “loaner” boat after the first one was dropped and that one was also named Ata Marie for some period of time but it has a gray hull and the 2 stateroom/sailing cockpit configuration.
Congratulations to you both on the purchase of your Nordhaven Motorsailor. You have just purchased my dream boat, and it's a beauty! I hope you continue to VLOG on your journey with her. I'm so jealeous!!! Good Luck and God Bless!

I have always loved this boat, the layout and all. Never could understand why they never really took off and almost no actual video of someone traveling in them. Looking forward to your adventures aboard the 56
+JoJo/Clem Kadilihopper - totally agree. There are no videos or even really photos of anyone actually cruising on one is these boats. We hope to change that and will keep sharing as we learn the boat and begin to cruise on her.
The problem with this particular vessel is there is NO real life cruising with it and I can't figure it out, its like the best of both worlds with an adjustable feathering prop. It should be a world wide cruiser and yet no one has done it. I so look forward to the day to day operations of this motor sailor. I understand its a bit power hungry and that can be fixed with solar panels and a wind turbine. The previous owner added a second auto pilot which was very smart. The actual layout of this MS is beautiful. Its a brilliant design, and I for the life of me can't figure out why this MS never took off. One of your first video's should be an in depth tour of this incredible MS from a new owners perspective and then launch into the travels and adventures. I'be been aware of the 56 for some time and specifically this boat, but he never video taped the adventures and posted them. NO one has done this on the 56 and I am so glad you will do it:)
Well it's been 2 years now. I think I just watched a video about your Nordhavn 40 a couple days ago. Going to have to see if you guys posted more video instead of asking how everything worked out for you yet lol. Really admiring how you guys are making everything work out. Thank you fir sharing
I’ve been following this crew for about a year now I am shocked they sold their other boat wish them luck with the new boat and will still follow. Beautiful showing on your new boat congratulations and good luck 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Just had to sub after seeing this lovely boat, my first to a motorsailer channel. I'm sure you'll become excellent sailors on the trip home. Congratulations on your beautiful new boat, excellent choice. Fair winds on your passage.
I really enjoy your being absolutely clueless, because I am too and it's inspiring that other people share my sort of "Yeah. I can do that", attitude in doing something that is becoming more and more an ambition of mine. I started looking at motor yachts and trawlers, but as time went on motor-sailers seemed like the most practical solution to skill level (0), and financial ability. I also like the quirky accomodations due to the quasi-sailboat hull shape, they feel cosier and the water is more immediate to the experience. I've pushed all the buttons and looking forward to the next episode. Kudos.
I've enjoyed seeing your family's experiences aboard the 40 and look forward to the continuing adventure. As a lifelong sailor who recently moved to a trawler, I'm very interested to learn about the 56 and see how she balances the "motor" with the "sailor." Learning how to sail will be a fun and ongoing project and we appreciate being invited to follow along. I like the comment about the "three boats" that you have, and the fact that you have a pure motor trawler as your failsafe if the sailing becomes uncomfortable, you lose the wind, etc. The only advice I'd ever give about sailing is how to determine when to reef sails: it's when you first wonder whether or not you should reef! Best wishes from the Pacific Northwest. We'd love to see you guys up here again!
I could never quite understand why this model never really gained popularity because only I think my 12 have been built. I think it’s a wonderful layout and it’s pretty much three boats and one with the adjustable prop. Enjoy your journeys with this incredible motor sailer.
Thanks - They actually only made 8 but it's still an available model to build if anyone wanted too. I am sure that a version built with some of the evolutionary design features that Nordhavn has gone to in the last 10 years would be an amazing boat. I really hope they build more!

Congrats on the beautiful boat. This is my dream boat. I have been wishing someone would have a sailing vlog with a 56 MS. I have always figured this would be a perfect cruising boat. I am looking forward to the adventures aboard.
Wow! you bought my dream boat. I'll be tuning in for sure. Was just complaining to myself that there weren't enough 56MS videos on UA-cam, as I've been watching the same ones over, and over. Love the technical discussions on your previous video's, and am eager to see how you find that supposedly $50,000 variable pitch propeller. Was just in St. Petes myself last week.
+Alfred Wessex - the controllable pitch prop is really what makes this boat so versatile. We will definitely share more info with our experience with the prop after we get some hours underway.

Just sold our Nordhavn 40 “Albatross” also in Dana Point in February 2017, cruised on it for 7 years ,fabulous experience. Noticed your boat Cassidy in DP marina. Enjoy the Nordhavn 56, The Panama Canal is a wonderful experience.
Congratulations. I've always found the MS interesting but there were only a few videos of it in action. The old Jeff Merrill video was the only one that provided any sense of the boat underway. I'm looking forward to following your experiences living on it.
Joe User - that is a good video and we watched it several times while trying to get a sense of what the boat is all about. It doesn't really show much as far as how you actually would run the boat with a combination of motor and sail though. I do like the fact that the boat is able to actually make good headway under pure sail power in the right conditions. We are really looking forward to learning the boat and hope to be able to show people its true capabilities under everyday real world conditions and usage.

Really well executed. As we learn more about the boat and start cruising we hope that we can share more about the real world benefits if the 56MS.
Wow, that’s a beautiful boat! I’ve watched Dan’s video talking about the variable pitch propellor and how efficient that can be. Have a great journey through the canal and I’ll keep my eyes open for you when you’re home as San Diego is my home, too!
Todd Hurnell - we’ve watched that video as well and I’m really looking forward to adjusting the various parameters to try to maximize efficiency. It will keep things interesting on passage.
From the briefest of glimpses of your variable pitch prop, it looks to be suffering from electrolysis which left unchecked will cost mega money to replace. As a marine engineer I suggest you get it checked out asap
jeff way - thanks. The surveyor looked at the prop in a lot of detail and I think what you are seeing is just the fact that the previous owner had it painted with some type of antifouling paint that would normally be used on a hull rather than a product like Prop Speed and it is just wearing unevenly where growth had attached.
Jonathan Jones, we've got almost 5000 nautical miles on the boat now and unfortunately almost all of it with no wind or wind forward of the beam so have not had a chance to really take advantage of large fuel savings from the sails yet! Hopefully we will sail in better conditions soon.
I have been thinking of Nordhavn because of your other film. especially the part where your daughter Cassidy showed her place in living on boat. that appealed to me as a seller, that a daughter could love the water as much as I. I Just want to be part of a water living family, so can you now make a family film about your new boat, from the angle of each family member. children are our soul and future, I would like to be able to show my team that water living is fantastic.
She’s a gorgeous yacht. So bummed we missed out on the 40’. Were still one year away from purchasing. Can’t wait to see you fishing and the canal. If you need help just call and get your selves back up to Seattle 🐠
looks like a great boat. If you are new to sailing, two small suggestions that could be helpful. #1 on a big sailboat, when handling lines coming off of the winches, keep your pinky toward the winch drum instead of your thumb and forefinger; #2 when the jib is luffing and you're on deck, don't let the hardware at the jib's clew hit you - it's big and it's pretty heavy especially if it's getting swung around by a luffing jib.
Your channel is super especially for a person who knows totally nothing about sailing, surveys, sea trials, etc. But it all makes sense to me. Thanks for doing such a quiet competent presentation of all the facts........ I’ve learned so much. Thanks so much! Now I wonder if I can get my wife interested?,! Dave in Phoenix Arizona USA
WHAT‼️ Subscribed to your Channel one hour ago while you were showing your Nordhavn 40, I went to the very next video from your Channel and you were showing your new boat, CONGRATULATIONS, KILLER BOAT‼️👍👍🛥⛵️. Vinny 🇺🇸
Great looking boat and excellent choice. Couple of suggestions. Next time back her into the slings won't have to pull the forestay. Second you'll enjoy the motion with the sails up. Very good motion that very few get sick on..Also rig a self tacking jib/Genoa. It's easy and a lot of designs out there to DIY one. Huge game changer.
We asked about backing in and the yard manager didn’t think it would work either. I think we need to go somewhere with a taller travel lift next time. Interesting about a self tacking Genoa. We will read about that when it comes time to replace the sails.
Welcome to the world of standing rigging, removing forestays when hauling out, bridge clearance's trips up the mast, but then when you make a 2000 NM offshore passage and don't run your engine and it's quiet except for the sounds of water against hull and wind against sail.
you have found my dream yacht... I have just retired after 38 years at HP and this is exactly what I am looking for))) I have been a power boater all my life, but now need to learn how to sail... if you ever want crew... let me know! hahaha Congratulations ya'all))))
+AustralianDude1 - they didn’t necessarily stop making them - it’s still listed by Nordhavn as part of their lineup and they would happily build someone a new boat. It seems that it was a misunderstood boat and not readily accepted by the market. We are hoping that as we learn and share more about this boat people will gain some interest. It would be a shame to see a boat model with such potential never see another built.
Thank you for your quick response. It looks like a yacht that could be handled by just two people. Interested to know if you agree after sailing her for a while. Enjoy very much your story.
Beautiful Yacht. My buddy and I were talking boats with our boss when my boss said sailboats have no right even being on the water. We sail in the Boston area so my buddy turned to my boss and said, "hey Tony, when was the last time you drove your Blackfin to Cuba? Dead silence. Wish I had a camera.
I always thought a decent motor sailer is the best of both worlds. As long as you are not in a big hurry to get to where you're going. The small tides in Florida kind of surprised me when I visited there. The huge tides in Maine surprised me too.
Just watched this and was captivated by the adventure of it all. Relatively little sailing experience and buying such a cool boat, just my thing 👍 Have subscribed and rang the bell. Looking forward to your adventures 👍👍👍
Robert W we are definitely motivated by the adventure of it. And not afraid to learn and try new things outside our comfort zone. We are definitely not approaching it in a careless way but eager to jump right in and start cruising on the new boat.
Yessss, A small victory for wind power, I'm so glad as I commented many months ago that you could go further for less with a sailboat, good compromise, long distance passage maker for sure, hopefully next we will see you on a 55' Leopard or Lagoon cat👊👊 Fair winds
Congrats, this is an amazing transition and a great boat to sail around the world in safety and comfort. I was set on getting one myself back in 2008, but things changed for me career wise. Wishing you both happy and safe sailing ⛵️
The Diesel Auxiliary is the back-up, the Sails should be your primary. The challenge in a motorsailer vs a "sailboat" is tacking takes a bit more time and planning, but with modern autopilots and integrated navigation your not tied to the wheel on long reaches ...especially offshore.
You have the best of both worlds. I'm happy for your choice. Should the engine crap out for whatever reason, without sails you have no rudder. A lot of tragedies at sea over this issue.
Great boat, love all the Nordhaven boats with the motor sailer being the best choice. I am a pure sailer but would perfer the MS when passage making for sure. Thank you for chronicling your crusing experince as its a valuable resorce for those of us that are contemplating a similar life style. Cheers from the Bay Area!
Beautiful boat. Lots of luck with it. I never heard from you so I'm sure your were swamped. I would have been happy to help you move your stuff on board. I could use the exercise. LOL I'm not sure how long you'll be in St. Pete, but I'd love to stop by and say hello. I'm not too far away on Clearwater Beach. If I don't catch you, I hope you have an awesome trip. The Panama Canal is on my list too, but still a few years away.
+Paul V - we were super swamped but made a lot of progress. Back in Florida March 30. Get in touch then and maybe you can stop by and check out the boat and chat!
Omg you guys are soooooooo lucky. You Wil love SAILING it after you get good at it and will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. The money you will save on fuel will blow you away, money to sail and travel to further places around the globe. Congrats.
@@CassidysSailingTrawler I have subbed to follow your awesome journey...I subbed to so many others as well, Gone with the WYNNS, SV DELOS, SAILING La Vagabonde, Sailing ZATARA and soooo many others. I wish i had to money to this, fair winds and tight lines.
That is an awesome boat. Looking forward to more boat less talk in future videos. :) Motor sailing is the way to go. even if the wind is down, and the engine is doing most of the work, keeping some wind in the sails will help to stabilize the boat. You really don't need anything else as far as a wing engine or stabilizers.
Congrats on the purchase, wish we would have run in to you in St. Pete, we are currently docked over at the Vinoy right next door to where you went out for sea trial. I do have a question for my curiosity’s sake, what was the reason for hauling the boat at Bertram and not at one of the yards right next door in St. Pete? Was it just to give you some nice distance for the sea trial, or other reasons? -Butch
Aqua-Cultured - Thanks! I don't have a complete answer for you regarding the boat yard as the brokers handled all of the logistics for us. But I think part of your assumption with respect to getting distance for the sea trial is correct. The other thing is that the rig on this boat is really tall - the top of the mast is 75 feet off of the water and I think that the other local yards couldn't or wouldn't haul the boat. The people at Bertram didn't want to do it either but they did finally agree after some friendly persuasion. It was a bit of a hassle to haul as they had to move the slings a few times to balance the boat, hauled it once and couldn't get her high enough, and finally we had to drop the forestay. We are going to be back in the area next weekend and then heading south April 2 or as soon as weather allows.
Cassidy's Sailing Trawler yeah i guess a rig that tall would come in to play ;). Also being a Trawler person I would have only considered breadth and weight being the limiting factors. Sounds like it was a good introduction to the many things you now need to think differently about. It definitely seemed like they were a bit nervous pulling her out of the water. I believe that is where they used to build Lazzara yachts so they should have been well equipped for hauling larger and more complicated vessels that the St. Pete yards cannot handle. I would love to connect with you next weekend when you are back in town if your time permits. And if not then, hopefully on the following trip. I am a big fan of Nordhavn, and it is amazing to think that you will be able to shut down the main and enjoy the sound of the sea while still making way in the comfort of a Trawler.
It'll cost more than their 40 to run even with the sails.

@@TheOverproof151 You know it's not just a boat meant for motoring or sailing don't you? It is designed to motorsial. And you realize that it masses twice as much as their old boat? I think your premise is very naive.
cornskid - of course it will cost more to run. Nothing is free and the boat is 105,000 lbs vs the 40 which was about half that. That said, this hull is probably the most efficient design Nordhavn has ever made - even more efficient than the 57 and 50 which are both efficient and fast boat’s. We don’t have a lot of experience underway yet but on the sea trial we saw a burn rate from the engine computer of 3 gallons per hour at just under 8 knots and motorsailing with just the main and light air - approximately 12 knots of wind - we saw less than 2 gallons per hour at over 8 knots. For a boat with this much mass it’s incredibly efficient and the sails make the range go off the charts.

The surveyor looked at the prop in a lot of detail and I think what you are seeing is just the fact that the previous owner had it painted with some type of antifouling paint that would normally be used on a hull rather than a product like Prop Speed and it is just wearing unevenly where growth had attached.
Love what your doing, the sail save so so much on fuel costs. That's the way forward for me, watching with interest, kind regards John
Congratulations! We saw that this boat was for sale several months ago and thought it would be perfect for you. Good luck!
Awesome. ..looking forward to coming adventures
Love that boat and look forward to your adventures. Fair winds!
Ok. I'm impressed with your purchase. Better than I thought!!! Consider going to the bahamas before going through the canal...!!!
The sails give you stability. The sails are your get home engine. Great boat.
Always though this was the perfect Nordhavn. Anxious to follow along.
I have just retired after 38 years at HP and this is exactly what I am looking for))) I have been a power boater all my life, but now need to learn how to sail... if you ever want crew... let me know! hahaha Congratulations ya'all))))
BTW... Share owners beware... 😊
Congrats on your new boat it looks great. I wonder why they stop making them?. Looking forward to seeing the walk through, safe travels
Love the t shirt! I know you are 'Grateful' for your new addition. She is beautiful!
Wow!!! Congrats!!!! What a shift in gears!!
Sweet boat!
I have to catch up on all the previous videos in your first boat.
I have always been interested in this boat and the Shannon. To me it makes sense to have a sail and motor.
Any sailing channel have a Shannon?
I look forward to seeing more of your vlogs, you have what I want to get as well so I am looking forward to your experience.
+Larry Edge - we haven’t published anything in a while and have a big backlog of footage to scrub through. Stay tuned as they say...
That's one way to save money / cut operating costs. I like it a lot. Every mile under sail is money in the pocket.
For owners of a $1,000,000 plus yacht who can sail around full time money shouldn't be an issue.
@ Nobody likes paying more than they need to, not even the wealthiest.
Congratulations on the parts of your new boat can't wait to see you sailling it let's get underway fairwinds
awesome boat and family subbed for sure thank you for sharing your adventures and advice!!
Love that blue hull, it really sets it off. Good luck on your travels
Nice Boat. Enjoy the trip home. Your videos are great!
GREETINGS FROM NEW YORK CITY: BRILLIANT......BEST WISHES GUYS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOS.......MAY THE WIND ALWAYS BE ON YOUR BACKS, AND GOD SPEED.
Great boat! looking forward for more of your videos on your new adventures ⛵
Wow, very clean and well laid out boat. I love the room in the Engineering area.
Excellent decision, really looking forward to learning more about the 56 and your adventures!
Yessss, A small victory for wind power, I'm so glad as I commented many months ago that you could go further for less with a sailboat, good compromise, long distance passage maker for sure, hopefully next we will see you on a 55' Leopard or Lagoon cat👊👊 Fair winds
Congratulations !! It is a beautiful motorsailer. Nordhavn means quality as you both know. Look forward to following your adventures.
Congrats, this is an amazing transition and a great boat to sail around the world in safety and comfort. I was set on getting one myself back in 2008, but things changed for me career wise. Wishing you both happy and safe sailing ⛵️
She's a beautiful vessel!
Safe travels.
Stunning boat. Sailing has a high ceiling for learning. Youll love it though!
No wing engine? I guess the sails are the fail-safe? 😄
Good luck and happy sailing!
The Diesel Auxiliary is the back-up, the Sails should be your primary. The challenge in a motorsailer vs a "sailboat" is tacking takes a bit more time and planning, but with modern autopilots and integrated navigation your not tied to the wheel on long reaches ...especially offshore.
Very good looking motor sailer.
Congrats on the new boat.. It is LOVELY.. I'm so jelly.
Congratulations.....you now own the BEST of Both Worlds....Power and Sail. the Old Coastie
Really wish I had the time to volunteer as crew for the Southern Passage.
Awesome! What a great purchase! Great intro to sailing for you but, you have the security if switching to motor yacht status. Exciting!
You have the best of both worlds. I'm happy for your choice. Should the engine crap out for whatever reason, without sails you have no rudder. A lot of tragedies at sea over this issue.
You are in for an exciting time. The 56 is awesome. TIGHT LINES !! Cruising sails are made from Dacron.
Hmmm...did your 40 have stabilizers? Going to sail is a whole new experience of listing...good luck.
+JustAskingAndCurios - the 40 had both active fin stabilizers and passive paravanes.
Living on the 'lean' :o)
You will love Sailing! Turn the engine off and glide! Best of both worlds! Great engine room machines! Northern Lights Gen. Top Notch!
That would be great. Talk soon
Omg you guys are soooooooo lucky. You Wil love SAILING it after you get good at it and will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. The money you will save on fuel will blow you away, money to sail and travel to further places around the globe. Congrats.
+MARKLINMAN1 - we are really looking forward to the incredibly long range we can get with this boat.
Under way and making way. Blue skies and following seas.
This model of boat is growing on me fast 🍻
That is an awesome boat. Looking forward to more boat less talk in future videos. :)
Motor sailing is the way to go. even if the wind is down, and the engine is doing most of the work, keeping some wind in the sails will help to stabilize the boat.
Great video, shame about the "Glaucoma Vision(tm)" really bad camera focus.
Another beautiful Nordhavn. I'm curious if the date of the survey correct? I thought you still had the 40 in Feb. 2018.
bill Johnson - you are absolutely correct. We messed up the date on that by a year. Should be 2019.
Stunning boat and hopefully cheaper to run.
@@CassidysSailingTrawler It's a beautiful boat. Last month with an R in it....time to head for Panama.
Congrat's on the new boat, It's an awesome Yacht, You should look up Riley and Elayna on Sailing Lavagabonde They are on the East Coast right now. They can give You some tips on sailing, Good luck and look forward to You're adventures!
Kenneth Miller they just had a baby, but they can definitely give them pointers. 👍👍
I knew that, it's been a few month's They should defiantly get together. There is a lot of good information that could be shared between them. @@MARKLINMAN1
wind is where its at.. but you got both... nice boat.
what a beautiful boat guy congratulations hope she keeps you safe and happy
Sailing on this beautiful boat will be a breeze !
Very happy for you guys way to go just think how much fuel you will save just on sailing lol happy for guys and Cassidy got more room to run hehe goodfor luck
She's beautiful. Perfect for what you're doing. Good luck and fair winds.
Beautiful boat! Congratulations & thanks for sharing
So pumped for you guys🤘
I was wondering who bought Tokkie's boat. That is a famous boat. I guess I'll wait on the 65MS or the Xquisite. But that 65 Neel looks good too.
