Are Curved Monitors Worth It?

- Does the curve in a ultrawide monitor or a big TV actually help? Or should you stick to flat displays? Here's some simple math to calculate the actual benefit of a curved display in real life scenarios.
In summary curved screens are a "nice to have" but not worth a big premium of it's flat screen counterpart. It's almost always better just to spend that premium on a larger screen for a better experience.
The setup in my video is using the following:
Dell U3415W (3800R) amzn.to/2eRdKJ6
Acer B276HUL (flat) amzn.to/1RIVywV
VIVO Extra Tall Monitor Arm V001T amzn.to/2eRc1nl

@@HelloDavid just a quick advice - you can buy a superwide monitor for about the same price and use pbp ( picture by picture) in it which will be excellent and even better than a dual monitor setup and u wont have to deal with the bezel in between
as of right now i am using a 30 inch ultrawide monitor with pbp and it does my work perfectly and i can always change it to ultrawide mode in a second
When you're looking an answer for curved monitors but instead you get a math lesson
a simple answer is this. you try to experiment with bending reading paper compare to a not bend reading paper. eh, which one is reading clearly🥱.

I've watched dozens and dozens of videos on curved displays over the past 6+ months and this is the first one that went through and explained the FoV, improved viewing angles, and larger simulated screen size benefits in a clear and concise way. I especially appreciate the mathematical explanation which really drives home really why it is better, not just "feels bigger".
Seriously the best video on curved displays I've seen. Thanks so much. Seriously, excellent video. And... now I'm sold on getting a 34" curved 1440 display.

I also noticed after using my curved monitor after a flat one that my eyes hurt a lot less.
My theory on this is that this is because in the case of a flat screen, the edges of the screen are farther away from your eyes than the center, and you have to keep slightly adjusting focus in your eyes which does strain them a lot after a few hours (for me at least).
However, similarly to what you said at the uniform picture quality part, in the case of a curved screen, all parts of the display are equal distance away from your eyes and you don't have to constantly adjust your focus.
It's barely noticeable while just working and paying attention to what you are actually doing on the computer, but I do notice all the time that my eyes are not nearly as tired as they were after the same amount of work on a flat monitor.
Sore eyes have been my biggest gripe on my flat monitor but dose that not have to do with the higher refresh rate being softer on the eyes?
@@emilschneider9974 interesting thought, I think that the high Hz and also resolution in the newer monitors can benefit the eyes
Excelent video! Very interesting, professional and informative. All in a short video. Just what I needed. Thank you.
Excellent and review! I actually enjoy the energy and speed of your voice... it's very calming IMO. :D
It's worth noting that some developers dislike curved monitors as it can make straight lines appear curved. I liked your calculations though, I haven't seen anyone explicitly lay it out like that before. well done, as always.
Derek Davis I'm graduating soon to be a web developer. Did you hear that some devs are unhappy with curved? Are you a developer who's had a bad experience with curved screens?
Yeah, this is especially noticeable one the panels with more drastic curve. They look great in games but make desktop programs look funky.
Never had this issue

Awesome job man! Love the calcs and thanks for sharing
Excellent presentation, well researched. Thanks for such a great video.
My thoughts on the matter is all things equal, a curved monitor is amazing. However the extra price premium one pays does not justify it. The effective price for an ultrawide monitor can literally be double just for the curve. Not worth that much extra to me at this point.
he brought out the excel calculations. my man!
Dude you are on point with your videos. This is the way forward for content creation. Love your unique relevant style. More please!!
Beautiful edit and smooth presentation.
You are an artist.
Dear brother David, let me spare your neck and others watching this informative video and give you a health safety tip. Using the second monitor at that height will slighty tillt you head backward. The weight on you neck will be increased a lot this way. When using it for a longer amount of period it isn't good for health.
Hence, though the motion of looking up might seem harmless, doing it for long periods of time can lead to neck pain, upper back muscle spasms, and even damage the vertebrae.
"According to studies, even a 15° tilt of the neck to look down/up at the screen doubles the amount of force exerted on our necks to hold up the head."
Love&light
Me: We've got to flatten the curve.

After owning my first Curved ultra wide for a little over a year now (AW3418DW), I would say my experience has been EXPONENTIALLY more satisfying. Definitely worth the money if you have the funds to spare. Took me a while to save up but I do not regret my purchase in the slightest.
Very informative and helped me decide between a curved and a flat monitor. I am going with a curved one and now I better understand the curve ratio aspects and size impact.
Well done and thanks.
The amount of info yet doesn't bore and keeps me interested with detailed math equations..lol.. All in less than 4 minutes! Brilliant! Well done
I cant begin to describe how amazing this is. Great job!
For me, while field of view makes a difference, even more so, I want to be able to have an ideal viewing angle, i.e., have every part of the screen perpendicular to my sightline. But for that to happen, the curvature "R rating" should be equal to the radius at, or near, the radius which you sit from it. I myself am usually sitting approximately 2 feet or about 60 centimeters. So my perfect curvature would be 600R, although I would settle for 1000R or the next higher one that I could find (I myself have never seen a 600R display of any kind). Granted, with a much wider ultrawide screen (as I'm currently seeking), the monitor could sit further back on my desk, which would increase the radius, and therefore the chance of coming closer to matching available displays. Unfortunately, 1500R is about the most aggressive curvature I've seen in monitors, but I hope that changes.
I notice yours is 3800R. I mean, wow--no wonder you're only getting a marginal improvement! It is a nice-looking monitor, and the curve I'm sure helps, but I'll bet you'd have a dramatically better experience at 1500R at your viewing distance.
Interesting video, I liked it! Love the calculations
I feel that the advantage of a curved monitor with respect to an ultrawide display is that you perceive less 'perspective dropoff' at the far edges. Have you calculated the difference between angular height in the centre of the screen compared to the edges?
Whenever anyone has a dual monitor setup they generally angle the two monitors so that they are nearer perpendicular to each screen. Rarely do people have them in a perfectly straight line. In effect they're making a low resolution curve to avoid the perspective effect caused by the edges being too far away.
Your voice and speech is perfect for explaining things like geometry or posing logical reasoning. I feel so "relaxed"
Thanks a lot for sharing this video and the Calculator as well! Very useful!
Meh... Human eye can't see beyond 4:3 ratio anyways.
Two human eyes can. 16:10 ratio is closer.

Xerxes This better be a joke.

Hey David! I love your videos and your clean white setups. Could you please make a video on "best setup tech" or "best ikea office items" where you could include ikeas kvissle and rissla accessories. I really hope you can :)
Have a great day!
Nice idea! Thanks. I'll keep it in mind.
Best setup for one will not be for another. Setup how you want it, not how someone tells you in their opinion is the best setup. Person A might have a bigger office or room to work with while you have a smaller room so automatically "best setup" is not gone, and you will hate on person A since he has more room to work with.
Get what you like. Do your own research on items. If your looking for a desk, look at the thickness first of the top, if its extremely thin then it will sag over time. Next if ones setup at a store, wiggle it, does it move around or is it solid and firmly planted.
Like everything in this world, what works for one person will not work for another. You can not gauge how anything REALLY is, especially furniture over a video. Go to Ikea and spend some time and make your own opinion on the stuff YOU want rather then let someone else got Ikea for you, buy a bunch of crap he/she may not want just to make you happy/angry depending on the final thoughts for any person.
What a cool dude you are. Nice office set up and refreshing audio voice.

As fantastic as this video was, I was hoping it'd be a more balanced video going over both the positives and negatives of curved screens. The only negative you sorta touched on was that there is a price premium. Talking about the small geometric distortions they cause, for example would have been nice.

Just giving us the facts we need and no noncense, we need more youtubers like you!
i think it really depends on the format, i think that going 27 inches (16:9) or smaller for a curved panel is a bad idea, but it could be pretty nice on an ultrawide or a big tv

Why no one talks about the VA panels black smearing problem? Curved monitors has this issue where image looks like it has motion blur / ghosting which where flat IPS and TN panels don't have. For me, when i got my first curved monitor I've noticed that it had an motion blur / black smearing problem, creating ghostings. Its pretty eye tiring if you're competitive player like me. So consider this if you wanna buy curved monitor, because it won't be a good idea if you're planning to game on it. That's why I've returned my Aoc g27g2u/BK.
I just had this exact issue with a 32 inch curved dell va panel. I returned it for a flat 27 inch dell ips.
When i saw the picture i thought they were 2 boats sailing
wow, starting to be in love with ur vids
Wow....One of the best reviews on the Curved Screen VS Flat Screen.
I like that when you explain it with some scientific reasons along with mathematical calculations on how the curved screen stimulates the bigger flat screen.
And exactly my thought for paying much more premium for just a very minor difference compared to flat screen.
So, does that mean, for one to truly enjoy the curved screen experience, it has to be at least 30" or the difference won't be noticeable?
I actually found a lot of problems with the curved screen. 4:3 gaming basically didn't work, and I'm sure that any kind of drawing or photo editing could end up being a nightmare. When it comes to normal use and 16:9 gaming, I noticed no difference, no special improvement. that's why the product was sold at such a low price, because the curve is just a gimmick people will quickly get over.
Is curved really good for gaming??
Just what I needed to know....nice video many thanks 👍👌
Wow, what a great video. Thanks so much!
Curved and Ultrawide: Good
Curved and 16:9: Useless
