This monitor is awesome for programming work and for professional photographers. I'd definitely buy it if it's out. It's indeed the first of its kind, 40 inch 5x2k monitors do not exist. Probably that's what Dell meant.
Spot on, it is still the only monitor of this size with this resolution - all the others have a smaller screen size. I now have this monitor and it’s an awesome display that has really improved my productivity. The 30Hz via HDMI is not an issue for me as I only use Thunderbolt and Display Port - the integrated hub/kvm switch and the 90 watt charging mean that I now have a desk with minimal clutter.
@@rufdymond just bought this as well and its arriving tomorrow. So excited for the integrated KVM. I'll be able to connect my work computer through thunderbolt, and my desktop through display port and toggle between the two through a keyboard shortcut. Can't beat that convenience.
Dell monitors have always been pretty well designed packaging wise. I wish more companies took note. I also wish more companies did what Apple do with the iMacs and their displays by having the front of the box open downwards so you can take it out while it's stood up in its natural position (look for iMac unboxings if you're not quite sure what I mean).
Just a thought, I'm pretty sure that there are people out there who use computers for something else other than content creation or playing games. I have the 38" model and love it. I can plug in one cable for charging the laptop, video, and USB accessories. The 100 watts power delivery (I know the new one is 90w.) allows me to run something heavy and the battery doesn't discharge even while plugging in. When I have a meeting just unplug one cable and get going. The wide screen is enough for a browser, IDE, and a terminal opening side by side where I don't have to turn my head as in the dual-screen setting. Anyway, love all of you guys' channels! They're really fun to watch :)
You'd consider this monitor over the $1400 LG for a variety of reasons. Because it's 6" larger, higher resolution, and it's also got a KVM included, which can be convenient (when it works). It's also got a non-reflective finish. It's not a game monitor, but that means that it's taller than a gamer monitor, with extra vertical resolution--content creators need those extra pixels in the vertical direction!!! We need at least 4k/UHD, and having it "5k" wide is NICE! I don't think the LG you showed can do everything this monitor can do--that's obvious. I've had this monitor for maybe 6 months and paid $1,689.99 total. Is it worth it... My biggest gripe, besides the price, is it's VERY hard to get to the ports because they all face the desk. The monitor is big and bulky and hard to move around. Picture quality is GREAT. And for writing software you just can't beat the horizontal size of the monitor--you can see very long lines of code. Wouldn't that be about the same vertical length as a 32"? I think when your UW is that small it almost doesn't make any sense to extend the aspect ratio - which is why we only really see UW come into effect at the 27" 16:9 size and up.
@@TuNguyen-nj4os yea but 27 inch are already at the top end of normal monitor sizes which is why most people would like vertical extensions whereas the 23-24 inch space is the standard having plenty of room to grow in both directions - the vertical being the most obvious one.

I’ll bet I can tell you why this is coming out now. It’s for the “work from home” people. Built in KVM and laptop charging? IE bring your work laptop home and switch back and forth and not need a bunch of extra cables /keyboard/etc. I bought a USB switch and USB-C to DisplayPort cable to do the same thing.
@@mkruizv lol spot on - I’d love the io on this - as I switch between my MacBook Pro and my Windows/Ubuntu desktop quite a lot - my clunky solution is a usb c hub plugging into my laptop and another usb a hub plugging into usb sharing switch. I am actually glad they are brining a 40" back to the market, even though its only an ultrawide. I could game on this pretty well if it does do 75hz. I wish they would bring back more 40 inch 4k displays. I actually found it to be the sweet spot in most games instead of 32 inch 4k. The 40 inch 4k allows some games such as MMO's to give larger HUD and toolbar displays. Easier on the eyes then the 32 inch 4k. I would love if they would make a 40inch 4k IPS 144hz monitor. But this ultrawide is not bad at all, except for the price. Should be perhaps $1200 or so, not $2000!
4:29 can you please add metric numbers in future as well? I know most of your viewers probably are from US and CAN but there are just few countries that actually use imperial system. Imperial system is damn stupid.
Disagree, especially for a casual gamer that's looking for more content creation purposes. 60hz, or anything above would be pointless when I'd likely be sacrificing color accuracy or something equally important.
@@icanmakeeverythingilovedie9861 everyone has their own picks for what they want/have to do.. if you need a highly color accurate 4K display, then 60hz is the way to go. If you need/want a high refresh rate, but less color accurate display then a 144/240hz gaming monitor is for you. Personally, for what I use my pc for, I have a 144hz LG 1080p 27”. It works well for everday use even for other purposes that aren’t gaming related, like for watching movies, or just chilling with a chrome cast watching youtube.
KVM, 144 ppi, Thunderbold3 w/ 90 watts power delivery, curved display - it definitely is a combination that the LG does note provide. Actually there is no other display right now at all. Yes, you have to be part of the target group that actually uses two devices on one keyboard/mouse/monitor set. This monitor seems to be well designed for home office use these days where you want to separate work and personal stuff with a desktop PC (or M1 Mac mini in my case 🤤) as your home device and the laptop from your employer. If that laptop is intended to be fully integrated into the setup or even is a MacBook of some sort, you absolutely need USB-C with Thunderbold 3 support. This is what this display provides all at once and you won’t find anything like this anywhere else on the market today.
Re-your marketing issue and rant at 7:27: The LG one you're talking about isn't curved (which is exactly why I didn't buy it- plus there were terrible reviews regarding MBP machines). So.... this is literally is the first _curved_ 5k 2k monitor. And it's the first 40" one as well. So the marketing is true on two counts.
I bought a U3419W in December to go with my M1 MacBook Air and also replace my Apple 23" Cinema HD and 20" Cinema Displays I was using with my Linux box up until then. I might have even bought this one instead if it had already been out then… What I like is the full build in TB Hub including ethernet, so after I move, I might get this one for my video conferencing setup, so I can hook up my monitor, capture card for the Sony A7, ethernet and keyboard and mouse all with one cable which would be pretty sweet (plus, I think it looks a little bit better than the U3419W and is a little larger, which is nice when you can really only connect one external display)
Completely overlooks the two features that people would care about in this monitor, 5K resolution and bigger size. 38" and 34" ultrawide has too low pixel density making text pixelated. The 34" 5k monitor is a bit small, at least in vertical height. The 40" is big and wide, and has good pixel density (same as 32" non-ultrawide 4k)! Not a fair review.
Not the best picture at 3:31 but you should not lift the monitor out of the box at this point. Move the packaging paper so that the stand mount is accessible. Place the stand into the mount and lift the monitor out of the box by holding the stand. It is a lot easier and saves some time. There is also less risk of damaging the monitor because your fingers might slip.
90 watts is so nice! My laptop overcurrents my dell ultra wide on DisplayPort alt mode anytime I need to charge and use the processor at the same time. It is the only thing keeping me from having the coveted one wire connection at my desk.
power delivery is why this will sell a ton for laptop users. a lot of mac and pc users will see one cable to plug in and be sold, even if it isn't necessarily the best monitor.
I returned two LG 5K2 monitors due to crazy annoying screen retention issues. Try googling this, it seems like a known issue with that monitor. For some, this might be enough reason to stay away from the LG panel based ones. I ordered this one, simply for an alternative 5K2K ultra-wide. BTW, which are the other 40" curved 5K2K monitors out there? There is a statement made that this is just bad marketing, but, he never refers to the existing 40" 5K2K curved ultra-wide that makes this claim false?
I miss Taran, he reviews products in a way that apply to the people who care about the applications towards video editing and stuff. Edit: I'm saying this like he's dead, and he's not (I think)
I'm sure we'll see Taran again this year. It's not uncommon that it usually takes some time as he actually test the products for very long time. Patience my man!
Do you have a hard time watching movies? No? Well movies are 24fps. There is a reason 60 isnt standard, its literally not needed. When you aren't in controll the fps doesn't matter as much. Edit: And if fps did matter when you are watching, then 60 isn't even enough. I'd say if you want to have a smooth experience you need atleast 90-120fps minimum.
Guys I'm starting to be impressed to a new level... For real though some of the little bits you drop in there like "feel" are hard to do in a video. But somehow I'm starting to get it very well 👍
The lower PPI, due to a larger 40" panel, will default your OS to a scale closer to 100% over the LG (you could get away using this at 100% scale if your eyesight was good). Therefore, you get more usable screen real-estate over the LG. These are enterprise orientated monitors. I can see this easily replace a 4 x 24" 1920 x 1080 setup that old school traders have.

@@TuNguyen-nj4os yea but 27 inch are already at the top end of normal monitor sizes which is why most people would like vertical extensions whereas the 23-24 inch space is the standard having plenty of room to grow in both directions - the vertical being the most obvious one.
@@fVNzO But there are some who find 27" a bit too large(include myself). Your eyes are horizontal so if you extend horizontal size you don't need to sit further back
4:14 was the most perfect Arnold impression ever.
This was actually REALLY great video, until James started giving opinions.... oh well.
Built in KVM switch is very nice , switching between office laptop and personal rig in a button is pretty handy
Hearing the unboxer say this Dell brings nothing new, when I've been waiting for this monitor for 4+ years, yeah...
Right, literally been waiting for years for this
James in a good mood is a treat to watch
I’ll bet I can tell you why this is coming out now.
It’s for the “work from home” people.
Built in KVM and laptop charging?
IE bring your work laptop home and switch back and forth and not need a bunch of extra cables /keyboard/etc.
I bought a USB switch and USB-C to DisplayPort cable to do the same thing.
My guess is the target is MacBook users...
@@mkruizv lol spot on - I’d love the io on this - as I switch between my MacBook Pro and my Windows/Ubuntu desktop quite a lot - my clunky solution is a usb c hub plugging into my laptop and another usb a hub plugging into usb sharing switch. So still “one cable” I have to plug into and out of my laptop but a whole lot of nastiness in the wiring behind to get it to work...
@@sohamray908 You dont need a Dock if the monitor is the dock.
We Canadians don’t stoop that low. The only people still using imperial are the old timers.
What a ridiculous ask
I remember Linus using metric most of the time. It's weird they didn't this time.
Multiply by 25 mm, not that hard
majority of the audience is american
I like James's care free attitude with the cardboard. Chuck it, fling it. I love it.
60hz should be illegal
Disagree, especially for a casual gamer that's looking for more content creation purposes. 60hz, or anything above would be pointless when I'd likely be sacrificing color accuracy or something equally important.
LG got you covered, Dell mostly focus on office / content creation use
guess I'm a criminal now
@@icanmakeeverythingilovedie9861 everyone has their own picks for what they want/have to do.. if you need a highly color accurate 4K display, then 60hz is the way to go.
It looks to be meant at office work, built in ethernet basically makes it a docking station (at least when used with usb c/thunderbolt 3 laptops).
"people love a big box"
Giggity?
That packaging is insane. We as customers should demand this always. Minimal plastic, smartly packaged to make it easier to assemble. Just wow.
Why would you buy this over the LG 5k2k? Cause it's bigger and curved. Idk why he was so negative about this monitor
You should check an invoice. I'm pretty sure you will find expended warranty there.
3:08 Cable management = illuminati confirmed
I think he totally missed the point.
Finally, some public appreciation for pocket shears
That intro is my 3rd favorite edit in all of LMG.
Is his T-Shirt also in the LTT store, or from where can i get it ?
Re-your marketing issue and rant at 7:27: The LG one you're talking about isn't curved (which is exactly why I didn't buy it- plus there were terrible reviews regarding MBP machines). So.... this is literally is the first _curved_ 5k 2k monitor. And it's the first 40" one as well. So the marketing is true on two counts.
Linus used those snips in the love stream today
Assembly needs more praise all brands should do this especially at high price ranges.
Yikes. Dell got dissed by a guy that immediately after, said "yee" while dabbing.
I bought a U3419W in December to go with my M1 MacBook Air and also replace my Apple 23" Cinema HD and 20" Cinema Displays I was using with my Linux box up until then. I might have even bought this one instead if it had already been out then…
What I like is the full build in TB Hub including ethernet, so after I move, I might get this one for my video conferencing setup, so I can hook up my monitor, capture card for the Sony A7, ethernet and keyboard and mouse all with one cable which would be pretty sweet (plus, I think it looks a little bit better than the U3419W and is a little larger, which is nice when you can really only connect one external display)
But did you get financing with that?
Completely overlooks the two features that people would care about in this monitor, 5K resolution and bigger size. 38" and 34" ultrawide has too low pixel density making text pixelated. The 34" 5k monitor is a bit small, at least in vertical height. The 40" is big and wide, and has good pixel density (same as 32" non-ultrawide 4k)! Not a fair review.
4:27 please include kilograms, I have no idea what that is
Nobody uses lb and inch

I wish they made a monitor just like this but with miniLED and HDR1000 and 120Hz. That'd be my DREAM Monitor!
It’s a new gang: The Delta E’s
Don’t mess with the Delta E’s!!!

Please include metric in the future for those of us too lazy to convert. :c

90 watts is so nice! My laptop overcurrents my dell ultra wide on DisplayPort alt mode anytime I need to charge and use the processor at the same time. It is the only thing keeping me from having the coveted one wire connection at my desk.

Which is why you should upload in 60FPS!
@@llamacannon1714 lol, it's a joke, i'm not stupid. and 60 being "not needed" isn't a very good statement for monitor reviews.

WHERE DO I BUY THAT SHIRT WTF
The lower PPI, due to a larger 40" panel, will default your OS to a scale closer to 100% over the LG (you could get away using this at 100% scale if your eyesight was good). Therefore, you get more usable screen real-estate over the LG.
These are enterprise orientated monitors. I can see this easily replace a 4 x 24" 1920 x 1080 setup that old school traders have.

They said it’s world’s first 40 in ultrawide that is 5k2k, not world’s first 5k2k. 34 in lg monitor you mentioned is irrelevant since it isn’t 40 in.
