  • During WW2 Bulgaria occupied parts of Yugoslavia. Bulgaria had joined the Axis but didn't take part in the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia, nor the German invasion of Greece. As an Axis Power Bulgaria was awared with parts of the region of Macedonia: in both Greece and the former Yugoslav Kingdom. This video is about the Bulgarian annexation of Yugoslav Macedonia (Vardar Macedonia).

As a Greek I appreciate you try explain why you call them Slav "Macedonians" but in the end they are not "Macedonians" anymore than they are Athenians or Spartans.. It's nationalist propaganda that foreign nationalists unfortunately repeat which just feeds their propaganda machine.
What you call "Macedonia" region is a widespread myth. No such "Macedonia" jurisdiction with those borders have existed in history. This is foreign nationalist repeating Skopian irredentist propaganda that implied Macedonia Greece was part of a "divided" "Macedonia. Alexander's homeland of Macedonia is 100 percent in Greece. Zero percent in Skopje. Skopje was in the kingdom of Paeonia in antiquity. Paeonia stretched so far south part of it is actually in today's Greece. Philip conquered Paeonia. As did later Romans (who made it part of their own Roman province of Macedonia) but it was not Alexander's homeland as the former Yugoslavians claim. (see there is another term you could use but choose not to like everyone else)
They were not "told" they were Bulgarians during WW2. Most of them still self-identified as Bulgarian "Macedonians" during WW2. (to much smaller degree Serbian). that's exactly they welcomed Bulgarians as liberators. And exactly why the US refused to recognized them as "Macedonian" during the Greek civil war. Back then it was more obviously they were Bulgarians.
Half of them now claim not to be Slavic but ancient Macedonians.. aka founders of the Hellenistic while being antihellenic. Nearly everyone that called them "Macedonians" evades over their flip-flopping identity claims. They also, unethically, pretend not to notice how they once again abuse the name "Macedonia" to imply Macedonia Greece belongs to them (as they did during the Greek civil war)

This is a very superficial account, I am sorry. When you talk about resistance, and respectively the counter measures, you don't mention the proportions of this resistance, who was behind it, how big it was in comparison to other partisan organizations in axis occupied territory etc. Your narrative is based on 2 sources, one of which a Yugoslavian, strongly biased source. You do not take into account that for the most part the administration was assigned to locals, ironically even in the first act of pro-Yugoslavian partisan activity in Vardar Macedonia a local, serving the Bulgarian police was killed, it was not even a Bulgarian from Bulgaria. I know that it is the easiest to portray all states who aligned themselves with Germany in WW2 as evil and oppressive (even if the facts contradict your own statements - "they built museums, a university" etc.) and it perfectly well serves the goal of having a youtube channel - to get views of your content and earn some money, but next time, read more, and if you are not citing anything from the one side (Bulgarian) do not cite the other side (Yugoslavian).

In the WW1 Bulgaria was forced to join in on the Central powers side by the economical pressure, and lured with the territorial expansion on the expense of Serbia.
They joined in 1915, after Italy joined in the April 1915 on the Entente side.
They were supposed to equal the joining of Italy.
Bulgaria was satisfied with his approach on both the Black and Eagean Sea.

That was not much of a siege as Vienna fell to the Red Army within a few days of fighting. However, the Bulgarian army took part in repelling the southern pincer of the German forces offensive in Hungary in March of 1945, while the German northern pincer managed to surprise and push eastward the Soviet forces in the vicinity of Lake Balaton. If not for the Bulgarians, the Red Army might have faced a defeat this late in the war.

"More or less safe" is a massive overstatement. The fascist government knew that a majority won't except sending the Jews to their deaths. So they tried to do it slowly - Jews lost citizenship, rights, they were expelled from the cities, their property confiscated and they were sent to labour battalions (aka slavery). The next step- sending them to death camps was proposed as just "deportation", but the Jews themselves organized with the political opposition to resist. Church leaders and the citizenry also prevented the deportation from happening. The Germans got the excuse of "we need them for the labour battalions". What happened after the war is key to understand the harsh truth- a large number of Jews left Bulgaria for Israel. The communists pushed the idea that Bulgarians "saved the Jews", conveniently ignoring the part the opposition and the church played as they were ideologically ... inconvenient.

The participation of the political opposition as well and the numbers of immigrating Jews after the war can be verified by articles and data from former Israeli governments and NGOs.

Same goes towards Russia, since the very foundation and Varangian times (Viking times). Even Varna name (Black Sea city) name, supposedly Slavic (as the Greek name is odessos) is de facto old Norse word for fortified place. Mix bag since the beginning of time.

Let me clarify something. Region of Macedonia was destined to be part of the newly liberated bulgarian kingdom after centuries of Otoman rule. Meaning that this kingdom would include the Bulgarian ethnic land in its completeness. Bulgarians were the last to achieve freedom in the Balkans. Others already had states and were only prepareing to scoop lands from the ottomans which in fact were populated by bulgarians. After "the Berlin congres" this dream state was lost and many lands in the region lost their liberation and remained under the ottomans such as is Macedonia. From this moment on began the battle for this poor land which was prey to countries it didnt belong to like Serbia and greece who carried out genocidal policies against the population and in order to replace its self-awareness. The Bulgarians state only had to fight this assimilation by themselves for over 50 years for which they held 3 wars and sustained several national crisis with no result. In the end the COMUNIST REGIEME TERMINATED ANY BULGARIAN NATIONAL IDENTITY IN MACEDONIA DESPITE THAT ITS INHABITANTS SPOKE EXACTLY THE SAME LANGUAGE AS BULGARIANS DO BACK IN THE DAYS OF LIBBERATION AND EVEN TODAY. So do you believe that bulgarians would secrefice so mutch for Macedonia if it wasnt part of her whatsoever?

but the lands of North Macedonia always fell from hand to hand, and was often in Serbian hands, and Serbs considered North Macedonia "Southern Serbia". The Kumanovo uprising shows that the people of North Macedonia were more friendly towards Serbia, as the inhabitants emphasized in a letter to politicians at the Berlin conference, but after the fall of the uprising, the Ottomans began to fight Serbian influence and propaganda and tolerate Bulgarian propaganda. So, paradoxically, the Serbian-Bulgarian disputes were the cause of the nation's rise.

Look, it is indeed true and often overlooked by Bulgarian historiography that some aspects of the Bulgarian administration, such as the excessive top-down centralization and the practice of hiring either bureaucrats from the Tsardom unacquainted with the local conditions and culture or "treasonous" servants of the former Yugoslav regime, came to be widely resented by the Macedonian population, as were many of the more brutal punitive actions against the partisan resistance by Bulgarian troops. These issues were raised by many autonomist-minded Macedonian Bulgarians connected to the Mikhailovist wing of the former \VMRO such as Yordan Chkartov. However this video completely fails to contextualize Bulgarian claims and "assimilation" policies by implicitly presenting "Slavo-Macedonians" as an already formed self-conscious nation - something they definitely were not - and only in passing mentions the existence within that community of a very large portion with a clear Bulgarian identity. Sure, there were a number of left-wing intellectuals who espoused a Macedonian identity and wrote in local vernacular which they saw as a new Macedonian language, but on the other hand you had the Bulgaromacedonians of the Mikhailovist VMRO and its Macedonian Secret Youth Cultural Organization who despite the aforementioned problems actively collaborated with the Bulgarian authorities, even forming so called counterchetas to combat the initially very weak and small communist partisan movement, and their sentiment was also shared by large parts of the common Macedonian people.I hope you take my criticism into consideration.

Not to mention all the major infrastructural projects - roads, dams, theatres, schools, hospitals - all built by the Bulgarian authorities even near the end of the occupation when the war's outcome had become clear, to be enjoyed not by the "fascistic invaders" but by the local people who were considered part of the same Bulgarian nation, our kith and kin - hardly a colonial regime of universal oppression. There were even factions of Macedonian Communists who held pro-Bulgarian views, either initially outright refusing to resist Bulgarian rule and joining the Bulgarian Communist Party like Metodi Shatorov-Sharlo, or being firmly opposed to the violent de-Bulgarization policies of the post-war Yugoslav regime like Panko Brashnarov and Pavel Shatev.

The mere fact that Macedonia was the most underdeveloped and most exploitated region of Yugoslavia (interwar) can be directly attributed to the deep rooted ha*te that the serb leadership of Yugoslavia had towards everything bulgarian. Your claim that the modern day macedonians could be descendants of serbs is completely wrong, why forcing serb culture, language and repressing if they are serbs? There are many videos on UA-cam about WW2 Vardar Macedonia and the people are smiling and trowing flowers because they are welcomed back in Bulgaria. After WW2 Tito was angry with the bulgarian population cooperating with Bulgaria and forced unseen repressions, ma*ss*ac*res, jail, unemployment, even building co*nce*ntrat*ion camps was a practice of terror. Many bulgarians seeing that Bulgaria now a puppet of the USSR can't do anything to help them, simply accepted their fate and macedonianized. Macedonian nationalism was much older and much more ingrained they it's usually thaught- yes, Macedonians who identified as Bulgarians existed but they were far from the whole population. Which is why policies of Bulgarisation were implemented. Because the Bulgarians used this population of macedono-bulgarians in their occupational administration, after the war a big chunk of them immigrated to Bulgaria, fearing retaliation. That was the end of Bulgarian nationalism in Macedonia, the later communist rule cemented that through their own hard-line macedonian nationalism.

I am lazy so i will copy an answer that i gave to Andrea Janevski down below: @Andrea Janevski You were not opressed by the Serbs who ruled you for 20 years? You do realize that your people overwhelmingly voted for the Bulgarian Exarchate? So before the anexation of Macedonia from Serbia your people had a bulgarian identity. Look Andrea nation states are a construct. In the beginning of the 20 century macedonians felt bulgarians because the local bourgeoisie, pristhood and intellectual classes were inspired by the bulgarian national ideal. After the serbs came they started applying the serb national idea but failed coz the ideas of the old elite were still strong in people's heads. However strong the bulgarian ideal by the time of the second world war it was only remembered and shared only among the upper classes of society and some of the intellectuals. Probably the peasentry was very confused by all the different nationalistic narratives being presented(serbian narative, greek narative, bulgarian narative). Nation states are constructs built by elites and not some genetic ancestry. Bulgarian identity is constructed too... Yes there was a bulgarian state in the medival period but was it a nation state? Just to give you an example of what a construct the nation is: During the French Revolution in France only 50% of the population spoke a dialect that is somehow close to the codified french language and of these 50% only around 10-12% spoke "proper" french. If Bulgaria won the balkan wars you today would think that you are a bulgarian. I see people arguing about how different our languages are. I find this hilarius... The difference between the dialects in Italy before Garibaldi built the nation state of Italy was larger that the difference between bulgarian and macedonian. The difference was probably larger that the difference between bulgarian and serbian. If there was an organaised millitary force capable of defeating the local elites of the balkans and unifing all the slavic speaking people under one banner today you me and the serbs would have been one and the same. Nation building is an enterprise of the elites.

Zero percent in Skopje. Skopje was in the kingdom of Paeonia in antiquity. Paeonia stretched so far south part of it is actually in today's Greece. Philip conquered Paeonia. This means that it can be argued that every military engagement beyond 90 days could be seen as a criminal act by the President who ordered it.

@History Hustle You forgot to mention that over 90% of the population of the geographical region of Macedonia is ethnically Bulgarian and charged with strong patriotism. And "the occupation", as you call it, is not actually an occupation, but the liberation of cities, villages and lands inhabited entirely by the Bulgarian population. For reference, you can read a lot of books, and there are also a lot of videos of how the "occupied" population welcomes the Bulgarian liberation troops. And otherwise - first Turkey, and then, over the years, Serbia and Greece with terror, genocide and ethnic cleansing and changing the Bulgarian names tried to change this, but met strong resistance. Only after World War II, by order of Stalin and with the help of the dictator Tito, a new nation was created - Macedonian, Serbian scientists invented the Macedonian alphabet, Serbian historians invented Macedonian history, and thousands of Bulgarians were sent to concentration camps for refusing to register as Bulgarians and start to speak the new language - Macedonian.
