Apple recently introduced their new line of iPhones, the 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max. The models received some pretty significant upgrades like longer battery life, a new camera system, and improved durability. But Apple actually removed a feature called 3D Touch, which debuted with the iPhone 6s back in 2015. And this has caused quite a bit of outcry from users who used the feature for things like previewing links, peaking into emails, and controlling the cursor. So why did Apple remove a feature that defined an entire generation of iPhones and provided so much functionality to users? Well that’s exactly what I’m going to explain in this video.

Software vs Hardware.
This explains why turning on my flashlight feels weird after I upgraded to the 12 pro max. It just doesn’t feel as crisp as before.

Yup, when I had my XS i wondered why using the light on other iPhones wouldn’t turn on half the time. Now I have the 13 and again when I got it was like why does this like not work lmao.

Let's see:
No the profit margin is not 250% that is next to impossible. That is just the cost of the manufacturing.
No the home button was not removed to save money. It was removed to help water resistance.
The plastic case for the headphones was removed long, long ago and while profit was likely a part of it so was being enviorvmentally friendly.

I never experienced 3D touch. Everywhere I looked the comparison between 3D Touch and Haptic Touch bur I can't find any difference. Can anyone explain to me the difference between these 2 features?
As an artist, I miss 3D Touch so much. Having pen pressure in my drawing app without any extra items was so nice

I recently showed 3D Touch to a friend who had his iPhone 6s for 3 years.
Exactly, the vast majority of users have no idea they have 3D Touch...haptic touch works just fine on my iPhone 11, it’s virtually identical to the 3D Touch on my iPhone 8.

I never knew what it was or how it works until now and every time I went to go delete a app it would pop up with that and I would get angry and hold it even harder until I give up now I under stand hahahahaha
It’s specially handy to swipe to another app just by pressing the left edge of the phone (instead of pressing the home button twice)
Says a lot about how useful 3D Touch is... namely, it’s not.
I used it to snipe texts without opening them everyday😂

The 3D Touch made so much sense for the Apple Watch. It’s a great way to introduce a ‘button’ without physically having one. I think it could have been huge had they added it during the iPhone X launch.
Here we are in 2023 with no improvements on this front it’s sad Apple had it perfect and they replaced it with these haptic controls
I will miss 3D Touch. I’ve been waiting for the last 4 years for it to come to the iPad. Now I guess it never will :(

@@anthonyl.9059 No, Haptic and 3D Touch aren't the same thing. 3D Touch was intuitive, easy to use, and faster than Haptic Touch.
I’m still using a 6s but I have the iPad Pro 2018. While I know you will get better haptics on the iPhone (I’ve used the Pros in store) than on the iPad it will still never be as intuitive or as quick as 3D Touch. I’m getting annoyed in IOS 13 when the menu pops up instead of the rearrange apps. Yes dropping 3D Touch allows for a much bigger battery but I will still really miss it. Hopefully if batteries get massive innovation then 3D Touch can come back. I doubt it though. :(

One of the most underrated features. An evolution of it would’ve been to navigate deeper and deeper into folders and such without lifting a finger…just sliding and pressing different depths without lifting a finger during each session…kind of like a cursor.

Thugs Bunny Producing models with 3D touch was more expensive, it had multiple pieces of expensive hardware in the phone to make it possible. They took those expensive pieces of hardware out, and sold the iPhone X and every iPhone proceeding at the same or higher price point without that hardware.
@@theenjeneer2493 3D Touch was more expensive to make because they have to put extra parts in the iPhone while haptic touch doesn't require as much hardware but more software, which is cheaper on apple's side. It is so that Apple can make max profit.

aw, i hope they’re going to bring it back in other models. i love pressing the left edge of the screen to switch apps, it’s so handy. and also drawing with pen pressure, my friend was so shocked when i told her it had pen pressure.

3D Touch, especially peek and pop, was one of the best UI improvements I’ve ever used. Even after this video, I can’t comprehend why they scratched it.

3D Touch revolutionized how we interacted with our iPhones. I now have the 12 Pro Max and I’ll tell you coming from the iPhone X; it’s a big difference. The screen is awesome, but with Haptic Touch it‘s significantly less accurate when navigating the screen.
Don't know about you guys but i used to love being able to peek into WhatsApp chats without it being marked as read.

I'm currently running iOS 13 on my iPhone 6S, and it has a minor issue with 3-D Touch: If I tap and hold on an icon (without pressing harder), it still reacts as though I'd done a Haptic Touch. It's almost as if both features are existing in parallel!
InventorZahran 327 that’s not an issue. That’s how it works now. I’ve disabled 3D Touch on mine since now I can just wait half a second and do the same things. 👌🏽

I just bought the 12 Pro Max and going to send it back. My 7 plus ist much better
it was so much easier to instantly move apps by holding down lightly, while wanting to see previews while pressing harder. So annoying having to hold, and then click “edit home screen” just to move something smh

After the iOS 13 update on my iPhone 7 I have haptic touch AND 3D Touch.
Still the 3D Touch is faster and I prefer it.

Adam Kowalski 3D Touch is faster but now it essentially does the same thing as press and hold, just a few milliseconds faster. You can no longer peek and pop like before which sucks

I actually am happy that you mentioned the keyboard curser. I had an iPhone X and just upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and I thought they got rid of the curser trackpad feature. I didn’t know that holding the space, now does the same thing. I will still have to get used to it, because it worked better with 3D Touch.

You hit the nail on the head. The problem with 3D touch was, you had to guess which apps you could 3D touch and which you couldn't. That got so frustrating, that we stopped using it altogether.
And here’s me who never knew 3d touch was removed and kept pressing hard on my iphone 12 mini 😅

At first I thought you would have to Haptic Touch the icon then select “edit home screen” on the drop down menu.
Faster way to do it is to Haptic Touch the icon and immediately drag slightly once you feel the haptic click before the drop down menu pops out.

You can still press and hold. Long press is the new 3D Touch, but I still miss it
3D Touch was amazing for gaming. Pressure sensitive analog like precision for throttle in racing games and ADS to firing in shooters. It’s a major step back considering the release of Apple Arcade. But I suppose the adoption of connecting PS4 and Xbox controllers natively to iOS helped mitigate some of that. But sometimes it just isn’t practical to use a controller.
There were MANY more features on why 3D touch was great. You didn't even mention the ability to press the right side of the display to peak into the app switcher. Then you could swipe to the right to bring the last app up or you could press harder to pop into the app switcher. Changing apps is MUCH faster this way and saves clicks on your home button so it will last longer. This was just as great of a feature as the keyboard track-pad.

Its literally faster to swipe the bottom of the screen left and right for quick previous app switch rather than long press the side of the screen with 3D Touch
3D touch was more expensive to make on Apple's side so it was one of their main reasons why they replaced it with a cheaper option, haptic touch. However, because of using haptic touch instead of 3d touch, Apple should reduce the prices of their iphone's that have 3d touch as it is not as premium as 3d touch!

I’m one of those people who used it daily. I see that I can’t replicate 3D Touch on what’s up for example, haptic touch doesn’t seem to work like 3D Touch at all. With 3D Touch I could read a message without triggering its “read” check marks for example, so that I could respond later.

Rohit Ramachandran no they dont know that, they will only know unless you reply and it still says delivered. That’s why turn if your read receipts then turn them back on when your ready to reply.
WhatsApp now supports Haptic Touch
i absolutely love 3D touch, its really useful. Using haptic touch just feels slow and sluggish, i love how 3D touch allowed you to instantly bring out options and whatever it does at your command and does not have to wait for a specific time. probably my most favorite feature of an apple product

iOS 13 doesn't remove the 3D Touch features if you already have the hardware... It works like it used to in iOS 12.
It was only removed for a short period in a iOS 13 beta. You can install the newest version. They won't remove it, that would cause a shitstorm.

@erik FENOMEN for now I am good with the 7, I hope it lasts as much as possible. The only problems that I have are that the battery doesn't last as long, the OS is kinda slow and I've got no memory to do pretty much anything lol but to use Whatsapp and normal stuff it's fine still.

Most of my 3D Touch use is the keyboard track pad and the left edge app switcher. I rarely 3D Touch on apps. Using 3D Touch in those two ways is second nature. I explore the options on apps but I can’t think of time when I use it for that. I will use my 8 for as long as I can because of it.

One of the reasons they removed it because they could make more room for a bigger battery, but mainly because not many people knew what it did or even that it existed.

I have been using an iPhone 14 pro Max since December. I miss 3D Touch a lot. Especially the trackpad mode like you mentioned is missing or hole worse: activating the flashlight from the home screen has become soundier more complex and lengthy
3D touch was by far one of the best features on the iPhone, having a 12 pro now I really wish it was on here, haptic touch just isn’t quite the same

Brawndo you can use haptic touch on your 3d touch iphone, and you can try the haptic touch by simply pressing lightly in the space bar on the keyboard.

7:36 you can still highlight text with 3D Touch. I just tried it on my 7+ running iOS 13. You just press a little harder and it will highlight. Thanks for showing me a feature I wasn’t aware of though (highlight through 3D Touch)

One day I told my mom: “Do you know that if you hard press on certain apps or menus, you can trigger some shortcuts?”
Then my mom is very surprised that she can actually do that to her phone and tried it out. So that basically means my mom used her iPhone X for 2 years and she don’t even know 3D Touch even existed.
Therein lies the problem. "Certain" apps and menus; "some" shortcuts. Who wants their phone to require specific and inconsistent interaction?

I am still using iphone 6s and love 3D touch been using it since 3 n half years. I was about to upgrade to 11 pro but i am not doing it now because i dont want to miss 3d touch. May be till next year I may overlook this feature and get iphone 11s instead :)

Well there are some people in this world who doesn’t want to get into this dongle thing. I am happy that I have the iPhone which has its own headphone jack. May be till next year I get something very special in the iPhone that tempts me to upgrade to it. Otherwise I’ll go for Samsung S series which still has headphone jack.
Dont upgrade to a new iphone. Youll lose too many features not worth it.
My 8 had it n I will admit I didn’t use it as much but the second I found out you could move the curser with it I was in love used it every time I wrote any notes.
I miss 3d touch. I usually played with it on my lock screen with torch shortcut. It feel like pressing a true on/off button 😢

I love 3D Touch! It was the main reason I upgraded to the 6S Plus from the 5S. I still use it today after upgrading to the 8 Plus and now the XS Max. I may have to keep the XS for longer now that one of the main features I use on the daily is gone. We’ll see what happens though 🤷♂️

You can still select text when using the Cursor, you just need to touch with a second finger next to the one that controls the cursor. Sure it’s not as good as 3D Touch was and I miss it every day, but Apple did its best to preserve most of the features.

Im gonna be honest I was really skeptical about the 2020 line up considering I had two iPhones w 3D Touch and used it all the time, but after owning an 11 for almost a year I can’t say i am still worrying about it. It would be nice to have back but I definitely don’t miss it like I thought I would.
7:24 you can still highlight text. Just place another finger on the keyboard while holding the space bar and then slide the finger on the space bar. You will highlight text. :)
One of few features that I personally as an Android user admired was 3d touch it was practical and only mainstream phone with 3d touch technology was iPhone
Pst fun fact for you before 3d touch Samsung had a different implementation of a feature similar to 3d touch it was called Air view basically it did what 3d touch does but instead of force press you hovered your finger over for explane a link and it did the peak and pop thing you hovered over it it did the peak and you tapped it it would do the pop just find it interesting how differently the two manufacturers implemented the same thing btw Samsung removed it from its phones (it launched on s4 and removed on s6) for the exact same reason as Apple did with iPhone plus Samsung couldn't make the technology work with the curve of s6 edge and it wouldn't make scene to add it only to the cheaper flat screen s6 but i kinda miss it it was a real show teller to do that.
Mikayel Միքայել you are right I had galaxy S4 and I loved it for that feature but actually that was really a gimick feature compared to iPhones 3D touch.. it was very hard to use it but it just looked cool and actually didn’t do much

But everyone knew about that feature unlike 3d touch on iPhone maybe cuz S4 users at the time were more tec nerdy since android at the time was a complicated os but who knows, i think apple should have included a 3d touch demo on first setup boot so everyone knew about the feature....

Alif Salleh yep Lando Land is actually right 3D touch exists from 6s to Xs and apple made it faster with iOS 13 just before they removed it and now iPhone 11 looks much slower with haptic touch
it's the trackpad mode that I miss the most, like you can activate it even when you're in the emoji section but now with haptic touch, you have to go back to the main keyboard to long press space bar and activate the track pad mode. btw I want to point out that you could still highlight words or sentences with haptic touch ; )
I switched from 6S to SE2 and it took some time to get used to Haptic Touch because it’s much slower… R.I.P 3D Touch it was a pleasure traveling with you ;-)

this entire video is just him stating that people have no idea it existed so the technology was costing apple money, and it has no reason to be 10 minutes long.
The cursor feature was one of my favorite things about iOS! Either way it was a good engineering.

I was a 3d touch power user. But its worth mentioning that apple came up with decent to brilliant alternatives to almost every 3d touch use case without the pressure screen
3D Touch was very useful. After upgrading from the iPhone XS Max to the iPhone 12 Pro Max it was the first thing I noticed that it wasn’t there. The keyboard features were definitely my favorite and would love to see it back on the iPhone.

Useful TIP for 3D Touch nostalgics with iOS13 like me: even though you can't turn off haptic touch, you can slow it enough so that you can avoid using it and you can use 3D Touch instead. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > 3D & Haptic Touch and select "Slow" as Touch Duration. Now the haptic touch will be way slower so you won't accidentally activate it, while you can still use 3D Touch as you please. Enjoy!
I just upgraded from the XS Max to the 13 Pro Max. I love it, but I was heartbroken that the keyboard trackpad was gone. I am literally just now learning you can move the cursor with the long press on the spacebar! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
