Premiere does this too. I’m doing it on a long, talky edit right now.

Interesting... Thanks for the tip. I had to look it up and I found this video helpful in selling the basic differences: ua-cam.com/video/WNX9JF1YOJ8/v-deo.html

OMG! Thank you for the L key tip! I was always wishing I could do that!

I find that 2x is the max where the dialogue is still understandable in Davinci, but in FCPX sometimes 3x (L key 3 times) can still be understood!

Hi. In my niche, almost nobody talks. It's a craft in which you show every step of the process and guide the steps pointing with your finger. The sound of the video is only music you add during editing. This gives me the idea to talk like a parrot throughout the video giving instructions as to when to cut; for example: Ok, after these words it will be the end of row one.. Edit the whole video like that, based on the audio (words) and not the image which is all the time alike, so it becomes tiring; then remove all the crazy audio and finish adding music.. this sounds awsome! Thank you.

I really liked this in DaVinci Resolve as well, I printed the whole transcript, highlight the good parts (by hand), and then just delete what I don't need!

That the traditional way to edit long documentaries! It can save a lot of time and helps the editor sort through tens of ours of interviews. Usually the transcript would be exported with time stamps to make editing easier once the text version is finished. This new text editing stuff cuts out the need for human transcription, and cuts out a step of editing after the text edit is finished :)

Descript is awesome but now you can edit by text in premiere, which is really amazing. So yes this technique is great but Adobe has in my opinion killed description this way. Not trying to be mean, just providing information. Love your channel! Thank you for sharing!! Looking forward to your next video!!

I've seen Sara Dietschy talk about editing based on the transcription in Resolve, too. Not sure if it does more than one speaker, but she said it will even label silence in the transcript that you can delete from the transcript. I think it was a video on AI tools.

I haven't been personally impressed with Resolves text editing workflow - it still feels clunky. Partially because you can't edit the timeline fluidly with it. It works ok if you are editing video where the speaker is working from a script or good outline, but if you are "scripting in post" - that is where Descript shines.
That said, maybe I will have to give DaVincis tools bit more of a try.

Also, thanks for pointing out the video, I went and watched it and learned a few things!

Davinci Resolve does all of this in there new update Davinci resolve 19 . Literally every one of those features. But I love your excitement

Thanks for letting me know! I didn't realize 19 was out.
I wasn't a fan of the implementation in 18.5 - it was very clumsy - where Descript just works really well and has tuns more features (like ai editing). I'll take a look at how they've improved it in 19 right away. I expect it's just a matter of time before DaVinci gets it right!

@Youraveragetechy I've been playing with it now - it is SO MUCH better than in 18.6 - but I'm curious: what your experience is with transcription accuracy? In 18.6 & 19 it is almost unusable for me it makes so many mistakes, matches captions to the wrong words and skips huge section of dialogue entirely. Its seems crazy that this would be the normal experience... Am I experiencing an anomaly?

You can do this in resolve as well. After it's transcribed you can delete the lines you dont want. It's the only way i edit talking heads in resolve now

A lot of people have been mentioning that Resolves text based editing is more robust than I thought it was so I tried fired u path manual, read about it and then tried it this morning on a client video I'm working on...
IMHO Its a bit clunky yet. The transcription was not nearly ad good as Descript. It seemed to have extra trouble catching when the speaker (very clear and articulate) restored his line to quick. But lots of places where it just failed to transcribe anything at all. Selection of text is also a bit finicky. I'm going to have a lot of cleanup yet once I get in to the timeline. Descript is just way smoother - has more flexibility + more & better tools, so the workflow is just faster.
That said, I think I will use DaVinci's text based editing for shorter simple UA-cam videos, but anything larger or more complex - it just isn't ready for it yet. I am VERY hopeful for version 19 though. If they improve it a bit, it could be really great!

I have only used resolve's so I can't compare quality. It works for my projects. However I will definitely give descript a try now. Does descript have a remove large pause feature?

    • @DallasJyl
      @DallasJyl  9 місяців тому

@kcoppa Yes - you can do it in bulk from the action menu, or by right clicking on individual gaps. You pick the minimum pause time to search for - and what length to cut it down to. Theoretically you can even lengthen gaps, though I'm not sure what that would do in an exported timeline!

the problem with this can be the cadence of how people talk. it does seem like a useful tool but sometimes things don't line up in action as they do in text

Yeah, Premiere added this several months ago. I use it quite often. Very useful feature, for sure. 🤗
