You seem like a good dude and I appreciate the video. However I noticed that you don't have that many subs or views. My intention is not to be rude but to learn something. My point is I've heard that one has to get a 100 thousand views or more to make money and you have to have ads. I haven't looked a great deal into this so I'm not in the know so to speak it's just something I heard.
This is the fourth video I've seen in the past hour that says 'why you should Start a UA-cam channel if you're over 40'....i hear you universe, I hear you.
@@Steven-Thompson think I'm gonna upload some videos 😂😅 Bought six acres and a farm earlier this year so I'm gonna talk about life and my experiences and the things I do. The no niche approach.
As a dude who's lived on 3 continents, 7 countries, as a native Spanish/English bilingual guy who's had many jobs, ups and downs, failed relationships, great friendships, cultural shocks and cultural embraces, this is what most people are looking for. I just made a video in Spanish about a hot political topic in latin america, and it got me monetised in 7 days, accumulating over 200K views on just that video alone! I endorse your message here mate! Well done!
Congratulations on your monetisation that is absolutely epic. I’m so excited to see what you create next and how your journey continues to evolve. Thank you for your kind words of support. I really appreciate appreciate you. Please keep an eye out for my upcoming video series of how to start your online business using Video. The first video drops this week. Thank you again for your support and kind words
@@Steven-Thompson I’m being consistent with lives almost daily and working on watch hours 😩. It’s been a journey and I watch you for encouragement. However I can see growth when I did what you said and stopped focusing on what others thought and started doing lives that fuel my soul. Asking myself what would I like to hear. And creating that content.
I just decided to launch a channel after going back and forth for 10 years because I was always advised to niche. But chatting with a friend this week she said "you are the niche" and she doesn't even own a cell phone or computer so there's no way that she's heard this before. So when I saw this today, I feel like it's fate. I know this is what I was meant to do. Thank you.
Yes you are certainly the biggest gift you can give to the world. You have a message and it’s absolutely worth sharing. I believe that’s what I’m here to share with people and to show them and to help them do. So what will be your next step?
I am new to the UA-cam word, and only average 20 ish views per video, however I am loving the journey and creative process! And very grateful for my 20 fans!
A couple months ago, I decided to “document my 40s.” In making that decision, I knew my channel would grow more slowly. And that’s okay. I literally think of my closest friends when I make a video and they’ve told me it feels like I’m speaking to them. That is what I want. I’m here for it, and it will take awhile, but niching is not what I do. Haha.
I love that perspective and I think is as you talk more to your friends through the videos it will resonate with so many people. One of the keys in marketing is to talk directly to one person so position that as your friend every time you pick up the camera and record something. That’s exciting what your next video gonna be about?
@@Steven-Thompson haha, you're so awesome to ask. Thanks! I am releasing one on Monday on painting a friend's special needs cat in one day (while I was cat sitting). I wasn't sure I could finish it in time. 😂
I HAVE LITERALLY BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS ALL DAY!!! And then, here you are on my feed :) I have been struggling trying to keep up in my niche, thing is, I'm bored LOL I am tried of doing the same thing over and over. I am almost 50, I work a fulltime job, I have grown kids, I live check to check, I just KNOW there are others out there like me and I just want to connect with them! Let them know that they're not alone. Share my daily life, however boring it may be LOL. I think I am taking the leap and uploading a 'this is me' type video this evening and see where it goes. I have worked hard on my channel for 6 years, while watching others post the SAME video (sometimes worse) and getting thousands more views. Instead of throwing in the towel all together, I'm just gonna do me. Thank you for this push 💥
Hey Mandy, I watched one of your videos the other day and I think there’s a few things you could adjust to really make them grow. I enjoyed your content once we got into it it’s worth getting into it or sharing a deeper insight right at the beginning as part of your hook. If you’d like, I’d love to jump discovery call with you they’re not sales calls. Their calls that I offer to my community to get them through a sticking point and then any challenges that you share with me I could possibly make a video from to help other creators. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in check out the link in my video descriptions or give me a shout and I’ll send you the link myself
I'm over 40 already and this is the perfect video I'm looking for, tired of duplicating gen z content styles, I want to make my own video in a natural way, I'm so grateful I've found your video, this video deserves a million views and this channel deserves a million subs. Thank you for the uplifting video Sir. More power, God bless to you sir and your Family...
Thank you so much for your beautiful comment on my post. I am so so grateful. If there is any question you have around social media marketing building a personal brand video content and content marketing in general let me know and I’ll see if I can make a video on it for you. Go and check out my video from about two weeks ago can even book a discovery call and we can fix some challenges and paint points that you might have and get you moving upwards . God bless
I already decided to make my own youtube channel but niching down is what held me back from publishing my first video. When I first stumbled upon this channel, everything became clear! I am the niche that I was looking for! I just published my first cinematic piece yesterday and will start to work on getting that confidence for the talking head videos! Thanks Steven!
Hey, that is awesome. Thank you ever so much. How long have you been making videos? I’m gonna leave a link for you here and watch this video. It’ll really help you decide what you wanna do with your channel. Also, if you wanna book a call in my diary, you’re more than welcome to and we can discover it together and give you a roadmap to get going. ua-cam.com/video/kTorLacvRjc/v-deo.htmlsi=zXaU9W6czshLDTfg
@@Steven-Thompson Hi! Steven, We have been making videos since February 2024. Almost all shorts, but working to transition into long form. Having fun..& trying to keep improving. Lol! Thank you for your kind comments! Marion & Jan 😁👍🏼
I love this so much because it's not 40 mins of blabbering on how good it could be without telling you anything real then promoting a course. I actually learned a lot from this! thank you for keeping it real! I'm 40 and I can't stand the speed of younger creators' speech and constant edits that is a clone of each others.. this is soothing. I LOVE it!
Thank you so much for your kindness and trusting me with your precious time, I’m very grateful. I’m really pleased that you got so much from it. Please also enjoy the resources in my description, they are there when you need them, Steven
I usually watch a few videos before I subscribe to the channel. This video gave me the courage that I need as a 47 year old dad to start my own UA-cam channel. And oh, I subscribed to your channel after watching this whole video. Lovely work!
I too am a 47-year-old dad we are both in great company. I’m excited to see you on your journey. Please let me know what your next video is gonna be about.
I am 57 and my niche is consumer debt. No way I would have been qualified to talk about this in my twenties and thirties. The majority of my audience is between 30 and 45. This thrills me because they see me as credible. I frequently get told how relatable I am. I love being this age 😃😃
Lovely work, loving the idea "you are the niche" so easy to chase the algorithm and try compete with others.... for me i grew the most in first 2 years when i was just having fun and experimenting and didnt give a shit about numbers or the algorithm.... the minute you do your almost back peddling and trying to be something else
That’s the thing, my friend when we lean more into who we are we attract the people based on the vibration that we give out. We all have unique skills experience and knowledge to share, our stories at seasoning to those unique skills. And overtime will lean into what the market decide which then gives us ideas for a course a coaching program or an online business. Thank you for your kind words and your continued support. Remember you are the niche 🙏🏻

@@OgoMaduewesi Would you believe I have 3 single women friends (1x35, 2x48 years) who have never been married and don't have kids? And I live in a small Texas town. I say go for it! You are that niche.
That's the approach I am trying to take. Just taking people with me as I better myself. Personal care, gardening, mindset, a little reading some yoga and random vlogs of things I find interesting. Definitely needed this😊 thank you!
You are really welcome. Sounds like you’ve got some great content pillars seasoned with your stories. You could really pull an audience towards you. Are you planning on turning this into a business or is it done for fun?
I am totally eclectic on my channel, not as a method to succeed on UA-cam, but because I am not going to alter how I live my life for anyone or anything. I share my life, discoveries, intellect, etc., however I want to, whatever makes me happy creating it. My current Italian lesson videos using storytelling, I created for myself. I’m just sharing it. This is the greatest thing I’ve ever created for UA-cam because it is something for ME as well as others. So great, it doesn’t matter to me if they succeed on UA-cam or not because they’re succeeding at my number one goal, teaching me Italian in the easiest and most natural way. I feel that should be the reason for making videos going forward, as in mainly for ME, just sharing what I’m doing on UA-cam. ❤
I love your approach! Creating content that makes you happy and aligns with your personal goals is the best way to stay true to yourself. Your passion shines through, and that’s what makes your channel unique. Keep doing what you love-it’s inspiring!
Before I started my channel late last year I took the approach you describe here, the low gear investment approach, and took it one bit further deciding on doing 10 videos, just for myself, not for publishing, to basically research for myself how creating videos feels like. So a proper commitment to 10 videos, but only accountable to myself, and with no pressure to publish I just put the phone into a makeshift «stand» made of cardboard (which I’ve made a video on), started recording and talked about something I’ve been thinking about creating a video on - just 5 minutes. Then I sat down and watched through it, and took notes on what I didn’t like, be it lighting, delivery, framing, audio quality, anything I wasn’t happy with. Then I researched *one* of those things on youtube, and experimented a bit with what I had available - started with lighting, put a powerful light behind a piece of cloth, tested a few things, light source inside a cardboard box with some parchment paper in front, turned off ceiling lights, put some stuff in the background until stuff looked a bit better. Then I filmed a new 5 minute video, no editing, and looked through it … and suddenly delivery had improved a bit as well as the lighting, so I decided to dig into audio … and then doing a small edit … Kept repeating this for 2 more videos until I suddenly thought fu** it, I’ll just try to make a video to publish, and so I did, cause I had lowered the threshold of entry enough for it not to feel too overwhelming :) So taking your approach, and testing things out for oneself first, no pressure, really makes things much easier to ease into :)
Oh wow it sounds like you’ve been on an absolutely epic and exciting journey and you know what? I think you’ve got lots of videos there to tell a story about this whole message that you’ve just shared with me it’s a video within itself to inspire others. Thank you for sharing that with me. I’m very grateful. What is your next video about?
@@Steven-Thompson It’s been a journey of self discovery for sure :) Just dropped a new, smaller video today about a technical issue using iphone 15 pro to film, since transfer speeds on the new-ish iphone should be *really* fast, but for some reason when transferring footage from the phone to a computer using a cable the transfer speed is suddenly cut down to just 20% of full capacity - the next couple of videos will be more about the youtube journey again, building the DIY gear studio and doing proper lighting - and then I’m saving the «how to get started» with my practical approach for when I’m tipping 500 subs (closing in on 400 now) :)
Thank you ever so much you’ve got me in your corner and if you want a bigger boost of confidence then check this out, people are going crazy over it this weekend. Everyone of my clients goes through this sees massive results www.bigdaddydigital.com/couragebeforeconfidence
Haha!!!! Of course! At fifty five, having lived on the beach for six years, a Zen temple for four years. Obviously. I'm going to lean into my main channel triple strength now. I'll still do my focused shorts. But my long form channel just got completely clarified because of this video you've given us. Thanks a lot. I knew already that the world needs our old guy power. And the balance you speak of with titles is what I feel. I'm grateful that the algorithm allows us to grow. It could make it impossible. Thanks, brother. You've helped the world with this one.😊
Your niche is content creation for people over 40. It looks like your videos took off because you found a niche, and you are doing a great job of using stories that are relevant to people over 40
Thanks for your insights I suppose you could see it from that perspective. However, it’s not quite right. I’m a big believer of teach coach support the person you want were with your skills, knowledge, experience, and expertise that you’ve gathered along the way. So tell me who wants and what skills knowledge and experience of you gather along the way because you could turn that into a coaching business and make content out of all those insights . #Intrigued
Hey Steven, I randomly stumbled upon your video on suggested videos after watching another video, and I almost bumped my head against the wall. Luckily I regained my balance and stood up proudly as if nothing happened before she could even notice. You hardly edited anything in your video, if anything, which is amazing. I have five other channels, two of which have several million subscribers, but I am always open to learning new things. I am almost convinced that this is not your first channel, or you just have experience in teaching, training, or telling stories. You're a natural, keep up the good work. Thank you for your super super kind words. It means the world to me like you would not know. I’m quite a sensitive soul and I’ve had lots of compliments and support, but recently a few people have crapped in my comments. I’m grateful that you have lifted me up. When people don’t get it or don’t believe they can do it they’d rather crap on you then celebrate something new. You, my friend have celebrated me and I am eternally grateful. I had a many years ago all of the videos were kind of Gary Vee STYLE and I stopped it after a few videos. I’ve been coaching and teaching online now for many years and I have been running a social media agency for about 11 years. Personal branding in high school colleges and universities and I love video. It’s like the key to my soul and I just hope I can continue to support more people and help them grow. Because I truly believe that everybody has a message worth sharing and I believe it’s my purpose to help them get it out into the world. And pleased you didn’t have too much of an embarrassing moment and didn’t get a bump on the head. I’m just in the process of editing quite a raw video and that’s gonna go out tomorrow. My husband and I (46 & 49) just started our channel recently. Although we hope to get monetized someday, we have just decided to focus on having fun and getting our feet wet in this beginning stage. We have lots of ideas that mostly focus on this second half of our lives since we have only been married for less than 2 years. So a wide range of topics. We hope to share our experiences while learning and challenging ourselves as we go. Thanks for your video.

Wow.. Just wow....... I've struggleed for over 10 years because my "niche" is so small. If I am understanding what you are saying I need to be me. I'm 70.
Loved hearing this! I recently ventured out of my studio and filmed in a park. It was a relaxed, natural setting with a lot less editing - my over 50 audience loved it. Thanks for the affirmation I'm heading in the right direction!
Ive been struggling with the whole niche down thing, only post about 1 thing, be KNOWN for 1 thing to your followers/subs but I am multifaceted! Part of the reason why I started this content creation journey is to let myself out of the box I've locked myself into from years of always worrying how people percieved me. I absolutely loved this video & your concept that I am the niche, ALL the parts of me are the niche, the same way my cumulative life experiences make me who I am. I am 35 & so much of what you said resonates, gracias!
Quality, connection and authenticity! You are the niche! Wow! Thank you so much! I agree! Sometimes it takes me hours of thinking of ideas worth sharing on my channel.

That’s what I’m doing with my channel there is no niche it’s just me and the days of my life. I work like Uber driver so ideas are everywhere. Don’t listen all this people telling you make videos about this or that… do your things guys Real is always appreciated
I hear you the real world is always appreciated. We get to see other peoples perspectives. I’m sure you have lots of stories to share as an Uber driver. Having specific topics, we talk about a really important so that we’re not just putting random content everywhere so what’s your next video about?
I decided that teaching young people basic life skills is my niche, but I'm going to do my way: ultra retro--silent movie style. It is a pretty forgiving art form and it's unique and (hopefully) entertaining. The only equipment I have right now is my cheap Android phone, an old tripod, and a binder clip I bent and rigged to hold my phone on the tripod.
@@Steven-Thompson I'm getting ready to upload it right now. It's on packing for a move. I'm having to help my mother pack up her house, so I have a lot of material. LOL. At the moment, there's no real rhyme or reason to what I'm putting up, and there probably will never be. As I need to do stuff in real life, I film it. As the channel is about learning basic life skills, that's just the way it's going to roll.
@@Steven-Thompson While i'm borrowing "ideas", it's MY channel so I'm finding people that I FIND interesting. The more I fail the more I learn. While we're a small channel, I love the journey it's taking me on. I'm here to tell stories, and one day maybe I'll be good at it.
Kudos on crafting an outlier! Solid advice, and try this on: What I'm actually interpreting is that within your advice not to worry about a niche, you're actually describing how to pick a niche! UA-camrs over 40? That's a fantastical niche! Great overview on the essentials of getting a video done. I especially liked the thumbnail advice, as that's something that took me over a year to crack on my own, even with reading and watching oodles about it. Cheers!
Hey Mike, thank you for your kind words and solid support. I really appreciate it. In essence, I’m showing people how they can become their own niche because if you do something you love provide something that the world needs something you can be paid for and that you’re good at, it usually comes from knowledge skills wisdom expertise. Therefore, if you create your content pillars from this perspective, you are the niche and the audience will find you because they’ll be looking for and searching for your topics. I put a great post out today about it in my community tab. Check That out and once again, thank you for your support
I’m over 40 and I’ve been making my living on UA-cam for 5 years. I’m in the midst of a long-overdue pivot right now and have been wondering if I should “leverage” my age, if for no other reason than I have a lot of lived experience in the arts and feel like that’s more valuable from a content perspective than what I have been doing. However, pivoting is hard. Thanks for the food for thought!
You are absolutely welcome. I look forward to following your journey. Where do you wanna go? And where are you taking your channel from? What is that pivot? #Curious?

@@Steven-Thompson I hadn't thought of it this way before. This channel is attached to my business, but hasn't done much for it so far (not that I can see at least). I've also been uploading a lot of things that are just loosely connected to the life coaching part of my business. Still, I got the impression that too many topics and two languages isn't working great, so I've hesitated putting the second branch of my business on there or talking about the complete range of things that interest me, but rather contemplated starting another channel or two to sort things and go more "niche". Now, I think I'll focus more on my lived experience and what I've learned so far.
This is so refreshing! THANK YOU! I have been thinking about not having a tight niche - I focus on gardening but if I want to add a cooking video - I will. I’m being me and if someone resonates with ME -then we are a perfect fit! 🌻🌻🌻

Hey, my guy. I've been following you for a few months and learning, so I finally decided to get started. I'm definitely going to be checking out your courage before confidence course. I'm not entirely sure who my audience is yet but I've gotten started. thank you for the inspiration.
I watched until almost the end. I have three main UA-cam channels. My main one is on side hustles. I think being authentic is what resonated with me. I am teaching people about things I am interested in. However, I feel I have more to give and I guess I actually feel constricted by trying to keep to a niche on my channels. So as I said I made three main channels. It's a lot of work. lol Just wondering whether I should be my own niche or not. Everyone around me has always said NO! You need to niche down. So I mostly have talked about Airbnb hosting, which is also what I do.
Thank you so much your comment has blown me away. What was it that resonated with you? The most? I’d love to know. Also what are you on UA-cam? For what do you search for? What can I make for you? #Curious
@@Steven-Thompson What resonated most: Probably the first 6 minutes where you make the point of the power of authenticity from several viewpoints. On YT, mostly what I'm doing is studying business channels and YT best practices. I just sold my business and then wrote a book about it. Now I'm considering turning that book into a bunch of YT videos so I'm studying what works and what doesn't. The other type of content I consume tends to be about motivation and life optimization and personal success. In this regard, your video hits the sweet spot of most of my overall interests. I think a great video for you to make would be to talk about bravery, courage, facing one's fears and how you did so to create your own channel. How did you overcome your own fear? Where did you find your courage before confidence? Specifically, I loved your YT Short where you were in your car and said, "You don't make videos because you're scared" That really hit home. I'd love to see you expound on that. I'm subscribed now and looking forward to what you do next!
Should you be selling courses, with just 1k subs ? I have nearly 3,000 and I don’t feel that’s anywhere near enough to start teaching people how to grow when I don’t have that many myself Genuinely asking not being a troll
Hey, that’s a really great question. Thank you for asking it. To put some context into it subscribers don’t matter. I have over 100,000 followers on my social channels. I’ve been running a social media and Personal brand agency for 11 years. A multi six figure agency and a multi six figure coaching business and have much success with my clients to validate my offer. This is based on over 1000 people going through my Courage before confidence course I would suggest I’m in a great place to be selling a course especially as my skills experience and expertise get people results . Heck, I’ve even done a TEDx talk on it. So the question goes back to you what do you think? 🤔
@@Steven-Thompson ok cool man that’s awesome well I have other channels with a lot more followers but they are music bands and I get people ask me all the time about how we get the numbers we get. I always feel weird about charging for giving out the information but maybe I just need to get over that.
If you don't feel confident selling the information you have now, maybe create videos with it that can benefit others while building your numbers? In the time you are building your channel, the information you'll gain can be used to build your course, should you decide to pursue that, or for more content on your channel.
More Subscribers doesn’t mean that the person is more knowledgeable or is more experienced. Real life experience matters and one can choose to share their real world knowledge even with less subs. 😊 Unfortunately people nowadays validate everything with subs and followers .
Sir I’m not even 40 and I’ve related to most of what you’ve said. Additionally, thanks for enrich my vocabulary. Loved how straight to the point you were.
Hey my friend thank you for your kind support and it’s great to know that I am motivating and inspiring the future of the over 40s when you can really help an age demographic that age demographic will always grow. So what’s your next video gonna be about?
Ha ha ha, looks like I missed the memo! I just make content for people who are on the journey that I’ve been on for the last 11 years Your best ideal viewer is the one you once were and I’m 47. It makes perfect sense to make content that shorten the gap for those walking path that I once have. How about you what are you doing?
Absolutely, I actually love a live style video, I made one today and it’s going live tomorrow, it’s about how to get started on UA-cam as a 40 year old, I’m excited for it
My Niche has always been Reviewer, Even before there was a , My own style of reviewing, taught to me by Siskel and Ebert, and The Rated K Gang. I started with films, then I realized that ANY Media can be reviewed, for example when Arch-Nemesis Trump calls actual NEWS Sources "FAKE NEWS" he is reviewing and Criticizing the NEWS, He's wrong of course, but Anyone with an opinion can do what I do, I just add my own style and Experiences to what I do. I started Tubing when I was 40, It's been 8 years since. The Ocean isn't Blue, it's Green because of all the Micro Organisms in the water. Aw the old Disney Catchphrase "🐝Yourself" Alright that was Robin Williams but it Harkens back to the days when Walt was Alive. is my only social Media, I don't use anything else. And The down side to Natural Light is you need to shoot at The Sun's schedule. but it's the main light source that I use.
Thank you for sharing your insights with us. I love your unique perspective and how you go about it. Love to know what you’re working on next #Curious.
Not many from the UK are online, but im happy to be one of the few who took the chance to start my channel. Its small, but I know with time it will grow. I already can see the future in terms of its success. We have to share our knowledge with the younger ones, so they have a guide to follow. This journey is not a joke, but its also filled with fun moments, challenging times and melancholy. Make the best of it!

Hello Steven - I’m so glad I’ve found your channel. I am an ‘older’ content creator and I’m getting great value from your authentic approach. I thought I would comment on your suggestion to add low music to the background of videos as it is one of my biggest pet peeves. I find it pulls my attention off the speaker’s words and occupies my mind trying to “figure out where that sound is coming from…”, so it may be an option that doesn’t work for all folks. Still, your content and your presentation shine through that for me. I’m excited to incorporate what you are suggesting in my own ‘leap’ into YT…we’ll see where it takes me. Cheers! 😊
Thank you for your kind words and your informative insights. I respect peoples opinions and perspectives. I’d love to know what you’re gonna use from these videos in your UA-cam journey
I’m 58 and I’ve had my UA-cam channel for 15 years but never really paid attention to it because I wasted all the time on Twitter lol well I’ve deleted my Twitter and now my attention is on my UA-cam channel. Your content is so helpful so thank you, sir.
@@Steven-Thompson I really like your suggestion to make yourself the niche. I have a few specialties and interests that over the years I’ve garnered quite a bit of experience in so I’m looking forward to sharing some tips such that others can level up more quickly.
Welcome aboard!! Use your experiences as ‘seasoning’ for your stories and simply help your audience move from 1 place to another - if it’s online education move people along your own journey!
I can't quite express how much I love everything about your content! I was helped within the first minute of this video! Your voice, style and ALL THE THINGS! Sending 1000 THANK YOUS!!!
It took me about 6 years to learn this myself😂 I really should have cottoned on sooner, but better late than never! Every day on UA-cam really is a school-day.
Thank you for making this. It definitely showed up at a good time. I'm 42. I've wanted to start fresh on this site because i lost interest in my old niche. That and life has been throwing stressful things at me for years. I have a massive fear of failure, which has kept me from doing the things I've wanted to do. I'm beginning to realize i need to just jump in and learn along the way.
Hey, thank you for your kind words and I’m really pleased that this has brought some comfort for you in your challenging times. I completely understand the fear of failure that’s why I created the Courage before confidence training. You can find details of it via the description as a link. It helped many many people to get over that fear of failing and to embrace their unique qualities and start creating content. Good luck in your journey and take a look at the training. I have no doubt it will help you. Thanks again for stopping by. I can’t wait to see you next.
Iam 35, and made my first upload today. I haven’t niched down … and I exactly said “niche is you” in it … Something I truly believe in. Able to relate with you a million percent….
Although I am not over 40, i really enjoyed this! TOTALLY agree about not niche-ing down and is how I am about to approach UA-cam once I start in January '25. This just gave me extra confirmation!! You have new sub in me ! Can't wait to watch your other videos :)
You are so welcome! 🙏🏻 And whilst your not over 40, everyone is heading in that direction and if the content resonates with you, you are welcome here anytime 🙏🏻
Thank you Steven for your great insight. I am a newbie into YT creation and was truly struggled with finding the real niche. So blessed to come across your message and it made a lot of sense. Appreciate your sharing and be abundantly blessed. 🙏
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for your kind comments. I have a new video which goes live today in an hour and a half. Enjoy it. It will certainly help you on the next phase of your journey.
I’m quite a bit over 40 and took on uTube. I’m doing fairly well for a year in. You learn ever day. Subscribers are the hardest. Views easier. I sell jewelry but I do cooking. Travel. Animals I’m me and my life is the content. Thanks for your tips. I’m subscribed ❤
Great advice. I recently spun off some content to separate channels, which I think was a good idea but since watching THIS video I have decided to keep all my pop culture stuff on my main channel instead of turning it into an exclusively "niche" one. I think you are 100 percent correct.
🌴🌴🌴 Thank you Steven This video was very encouraging. I’ve been thinking about doing my own UA-cam channel for almost two years since I retired. I have so much to share but I’ve been worried about having too many niches. Blessings from Paso Robles, California, Carlos
You are welcome, if you build the niche around you then you create less competition and therefore can focus on the transformational content you provide for people, go for it
This was incredibly helpful in terms of 'to the point' information. It's tangible. I can literally take notes and apply the information without fluff. - thanks
Thank you for this well articulated video. I find that there is nothing that kills creativity like UA-cam, if you let it. I haven't cared about algorithms or views for a long time and I make exactly the content I want to make.
Hey, I’m pleased you’ve lent into your Genius and thank you for your kind words about my video. Be sure to check out the links in my descriptions for resources to support you on your journey. What’s your next video about? #Curious?
Steve, thanks for this... you are nudging me towards something I have considered for years. As a 76 year old surfer, I have built a modest UA-cam channel with 3.7K subscribers watching my 228 videos. At 70, I became a paid professional SUP surfer, simply because I reflect the demographics of the paddle surf community and as a result, I have become a well respected influencer. This is totally awesome and I love the connections and friendships made over the years.... BUT: I have a lot on my mind about how to use my simple but interesting life to inspire others over 40 to view aging with enthusiasm for their future. At 62, I lost everything I owned and weighed over 300 lbs. Life is infinitely renewable, if you have the proper mindset! I want to remind people what is possible if you take off the rose colored glasses and accept that life has challenges.... not dead ends.
Oh wow, what a story, you have so much to share and your journey is inspirational, I just read your comment out to my family.. Be sure to book a discovery call with me to help with that momentum
I’m 60 this year. I am my niche, so to speak. Though, it's a journey at times just allowing yourself to free your voice and speak your truths. I’ve spent 60 years of having extreme visions ahead and then living through them in life while trying to survive into the next day, while mostly hiding and wanting to be a recluse in a world of insanity. I watch videos where people have click bait thumbnails, that do not actually deliver in the video. I see people tell these stories that are outrageous, that parts of me sense are not real, or are just crazy, or just trying to become famous and willing to say or do anything. And I sit in my chair in front of my computer and just wonder....... How do I really come forward and speak about such extremely epic experiences that I have had in life when I don't want to sensationalize it all. It doesn't need that since it's often too epic for many to even believe it's real. Do I even dare try to live more openly honestly in life? Life is weird. Thanks for doing your thing here! It’s appreciated.
Merci beaucoup Steven! I have been thinking about the idea of content being out there for older creators and hopefuls et voilà! Your video popped up. It’s like the algorithm can read minds. You’re encouraging and give me hope mon ami! Bonne continuation. 👊🏾❤️
@@Steven-Thompson SkyNet! 😆 Old skool! I want to come up with a plan. I'm plotting on creating a channel that will give me a platform for my different creative outlets - being a rapper, author and French teacher. I've started the 2 min video diary you mentioned too. Top man. Continue bien mon ami!
@@Steven-Thompson I really like the concept of us being the niche, and using that life experience to be able to provide our value. Each of our journies are unique, and that's what can help separate us.
Great video, thank you!! Much of this really resonated with me, especially the parts about making mistakes. Your blunders really made me smile because I struggled so hard talking to camera when I first started my channel. Scripting is nearly impossible for me, for this very reason, and I've found it much easier and less stressfull to just speak as if I was speaking to a friend. Authenticity is where it's at, it removes so much of the stress!
@@Steven-Thompson Right now I'm working on the next episode of a series called Roast and Reason. It's a really laid back setting where we grill delicious meats and have dinner table discussions about topics related to health & nutrition. Those videos are super easy because I'm quite literally talking to a friend, which also makes editing a breeze as well! Thanks again, I like your style and I'm looking forward to more of your videos.
Hey thanks mate, I am 45 and has been lately struggling to find my niche. You just provided the solution. I just need to be me, got truckload of stuff to share with my audience. Keep sharing good work.
Thank you 🙏🏻 To give you some clarity find the intersection for your genius, I suggest writing 4 lists and finding the commonality. 1️⃣ is what you love doing number 2️⃣ is what does the world need from you in your perspective? Number 3️⃣ is what can you be paid for? A number 4️⃣? Is what you’re good at. Find that intersection, that common thread and you will be off to the races!!
@@Steven-Thompson I will post more natural footage and continue to be me on camera. I have done so much just turned 40 I have traveled so many places so I will show people what I have experienced and make it fun.
Well, I'm not over 40, just over 50 😆. And yes, I believe I am my niche. I share my passion, and teach most of the time. I don't have lots of viewers, but I enjoy what I'm doing. You're audio is great, and I love your background. And the resolution of your video...I wish mine is the same. Great advice!

Hey Steve, I sent an email to you regarding the 5 step process yesterday. Today's lesson 3...that chatgpt content matrix...MY WORD! THAT IS AMAZING!!!!!
Glad I stumbled upon this vid. I’m 44. Hopelessly compelled to self-express. Accidentally acquired 40K followers on Instagram, but have an empty UA-cam channel. Don’t know how to translate from there to here. The same content doesn’t transfer from IG to YT, I think. Need to take the leap and start making some YT specific vlogs.
I’m glad you found the video and got something from it. What is your IG about? Educational content is a great place to start, I can’t really advise you unless I know more.
I’ve subscribed for now and I’m excited to check out some of your content to figure out if your “non” niche really is a niche! I really appreciate content creators who come across as genuine and humble-it definitely shows on camera. I'm keeping an open mind about everything. I do find the whole idea of paying for courses a bit off-putting, though. I’ll hold off on forming an opinion until I learn more about what you call “your journey.”
Thanks for your insights, you do you and what feels right. I’m a big believer of investing in myself to get me to where I want to go to. What are you focused on for your channel?
Hey Steven, this is a GREAT video! This is the 2nd time one of your videos came up on my feed. I really like your simple and straight forward approach for content creation. I just started my UA-cam channel after studying a series of how to videos from younger creators. Although I gain great insight from them I often found a little disconnect in terms of where I wanted to go with my channel. After going through their steps and trying to be polished I finally said forget it. I'm going to just speak from the heart like I've always done in my work. Finally, posted my first video the other day. Lots to clean up and learn but what matters is just getting started. As a 55 year old martial arts school owner I wanted to share my life experiences showing how the principles from martial arts can be applied as a tool for self-improvement people over the age of 40 even if they do not practice martial arts. My father credits the martial arts for turning his finances around after declaring bankruptcy when I was 9 years old. Your approach is the same approach I teach my students and that is to me be a carbon copy of me as we are all unique. To bring this point home I say, "root of the tree will be the same but the all leaves will be different."
Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to hear that my videos resonate with you, especially as you embark on your own UA-cam journey. I love that you’re choosing to speak from the heart-authenticity is truly the key to building something meaningful. What was your favorite part of the video, or what really clicked for you this time around? And I’m curious, what’s your next step for your channel? Maybe planning your next video or refining your message? Keep going-you’re off to a fantastic start!
@@Steven-Thompson You're welcome Steven. I like the directness of your videos and well as your cadence when you speak. Runnng two martial arts schools keeps me busy I am looking for videos that get to the point while offering substance at the same time. You speak like you and I are having a chat at a resturant over dinner. My favorite part of the video was the part about authenticity and to share our unique stories. I think a lot of people try to be an imitation of someone else but stories throughout history have always captivated us. Great stories are always passed down from our ancestors and parents. All very uinque and different. So I believe we should as youtubers put our unique spin on the topic we create. I've already planned out a few videos. I definitely learn a lot from my first video and what adjustments need to be made. It's funny how hard I worked on it and when it came out I saw so many things that could be done better. But hey just like when entered my first jiu-jitsu tournament I was raw and wild. However, over time I became the refined seasoned black belt. I treat UA-cam the same and hope everyone who is sitting on the fence watch your video would adpot this line of thinking when it comes to starting their channel.
@@Steven-Thompson I like the red:blue ocean concept along with the visual. I like how you provided relevant and helpful tips in a short amount of time. I have been on and off UA-cam for years as a creator with another account but, of course ‘live’ on UA-cam daily for my own entertainment in general. Your background is homey and cozy. I like your look and love your accent, lol. I love how you converse with your viewers by taking the time to ask them questions, further enhancing everything you’re saying. Thank you.☺️
Once i realized niche wasnt a type of video but rather the type of viewer u seek. That helped bc i already know what people like me like and want. Regardless if u understand what i am doing, u know whether the content is for you or not. Im still growing so dont judge me if u see what i do. In fact if h have any pointers im all 👂’s. Hi, I am over 40 and produced my first video 12 years ago in Hawaii doing a critique of renting a convertible. Later my daughter( youtube star) told me I need to focus on one subject rather than art, travel etc so I chose my model railway and have documented its progress since. I make my own buildings etc from card and plastikard, I produce short, long and live format videos and presently have 1.4k subs. It is a small and competitive niche and I try to be innovative and enjoy the process. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. Cheers

@@Steven-Thompson thanks 🙏
Then I filmed a new 5 minute video, no editing, and looked through it … and suddenly delivery had improved a bit as well as the lighting, so I decided to dig into audio … and then doing a small edit …
Kept repeating this for 2 more videos until I suddenly thought fu** it, I’ll just try to make a video to publish, and so I did, cause I had lowered the threshold of entry enough for it not to feel too overwhelming :)
So taking your approach, and testing things out for oneself first, no pressure, really makes things much easier to ease into :)

I'll still do my focused shorts. But my long form channel just got completely clarified because of this video you've given us. Thanks a lot. I knew already that the world needs our old guy power. Thanks for these marvelous tips and tricks!

I’m quite a sensitive soul and I’ve had lots of compliments and support, but recently a few people have crapped in my comments. I’m grateful that you have lifted me up.
When people don’t get it or don’t believe they can do it they’d rather crap on you then celebrate something new.

What’s your next video about?
Ive been struggling with the whole niche down thing, only post about 1 thing, be KNOWN for 1 thing to your followers/subs but I am multifaceted! Part of the reason why I started this content creation journey is to let myself out of the box I've locked myself into from years of always worrying how people percieved me. I absolutely loved this video & your concept that I am the niche, ALL the parts of me are the niche, the same way my cumulative life experiences make me who I am. I am 35 & so much of what you said resonates, gracias!

What content are you creating?
I decided that teaching young people basic life skills is my niche, but I'm going to do my way: ultra retro--silent movie style. It is a pretty forgiving art form and it's unique and (hopefully) entertaining. The only equipment I have right now is my cheap Android phone, an old tripod, and a binder clip I bent and rigged to hold my phone on the tripod.
Sounds really interesting. Can’t wait to see what you produce. Tell me a bit more what next video be about?
Thanks for the binder clip idea. Good luck w/your channel.
What I've found, while everyone can tell a similar story, everyone has their own unique experience and can always bring, or contribute something new.

Quite possibly the most important, authentic, video on UA-cam. Thanks for the breath of fresh air!
I have nearly 3,000 and I don’t feel that’s anywhere near enough to start teaching people how to grow when I don’t have that many myself
Genuinely asking not being a troll
@@stestetsonmusic your knowledge, skill, experience and expertise, coupled with your unique way & personality are a business asset, use them.

Hello Steven - I’m so glad I’ve found your channel. I am an ‘older’ content creator and I’m getting great value from your authentic approach. I thought I would comment on your suggestion to add low music to the background of videos as it is one of my biggest pet peeves.
I haven’t niched down … and I exactly said “niche is you” in it …
Something I truly believe in.
Able to relate with you a million percent….
Nice work!
What was your first video about?
@@Steven-Thompson about how I pushed myself through imposter syndrome to make it
Hook, mindset, story, teach, and call to action
You got it!
And whilst your not over 40, everyone is heading in that direction and if the content resonates with you, you are welcome here anytime 🙏🏻
I stutter and have imperfections and edit them out, but after watching this video, I'm gonna keep them in. Thank you so much for this video!
You are welcome, it’s comfortable being yourself.
Let me know how it all goes.
@@Steven-Thompson will do!
I’ve been watching your channel for a few days and want to thank you for sharing this video with me
You are so welcome
Lucky to came across this Channel, very true just be unique in what to offer to your audience.
Absolutely, lean into you and let people connect with you
Thank you Steven for your great insight.
Thank you for your kind support. Is there anything you would like covered in a future video to help you on your journey? I’d love to help!
@@Steven-Thompson I get very few comments. Even when asking for them. Tips to get comments may already be in your library. Thank you
This is exactly what I did , and i've just been monitored so it does work
Congratulations 🥳
Great advice. I recently spun off some content to separate channels, which I think was a good idea but since watching THIS video I have decided to keep all my pop culture stuff on my main channel instead of turning it into an exclusively "niche" one. I think you are 100 percent correct.
Glad it was helpful!
Appreciate your kind words and support so with that in mind what’s your next video gonna be about?
This was my confirmation about my niche! Thank you 🙏
You're so welcome! 😉
🌴🌴🌴 Thank you Steven
This video was very encouraging.
- thanks
Glad it was helpful!
What’s your next action step to take?
@@Steven-Thompson I know you're going to tell me 'just get STARTED'😂 hehe...but I'm still in the research phase. Thank you
Thank you for this well articulated video. I find that there is nothing that kills creativity like UA-cam, if you let it. I haven't cared about algorithms or views for a long time and I make exactly the content I want to make.
Hey, I’m pleased you’ve lent into your Genius and thank you for your kind words about my video.

You have great insights. I'm always looking for new idea to incorporate into my channel. Thank you for sharing.
Glad it was helpful! What did you take from the video?
@@Steven-Thompson 1. For 40+, the quick cuts are unnecessary edits to maintain attention. 2. You are the Niche
Im so glad to find you wow the struggle has been real im 45
I’m pleased you are here, yes the struggle is real, however I’ve a formula I’m finding works for many, I hope to support you more
Steve, thanks for this... you are nudging me towards something I have considered for years.
BUT:
I have a lot on my mind about how to use my simple but interesting life to inspire others over 40 to view aging with enthusiasm for their future.
@@Steven-Thompson thanks... when I catch up to my current channel duties, and relocate to my winter hideaway, I'll get this going!
Thank you for sharing your insights and feelings.
I’m really grateful and I look forward to you leaning into it and sharing when you are ready 🙏🏻
Merci beaucoup Steven! I have been thinking about the idea of content being out there for older creators and hopefuls et voilà! Your video popped up. It’s like the algorithm can read minds. You’re encouraging and give me hope mon ami! Bonne continuation. 👊🏾❤️
Watch out…. SkyNet is coming 😉😂
I’m pleased you found me and this video.
So what’s next for you?
@@Steven-Thompson SkyNet! 😆 Old skool! I want to come up with a plan. I'm plotting on creating a channel that will give me a platform for my different creative outlets - being a rapper, author and French teacher. I've started the 2 min video diary you mentioned too. Top man. Continue bien mon ami!
Great video! As someone who is approaching the big 4-0 this year, this definitely resonates! Looking forward to continuing on with my channel!
Thanks for your kind support I’m excited for you to get started on your journey.
What was it that resonated with you most?
@@Steven-Thompson I really like the concept of us being the niche, and using that life experience to be able to provide our value. Each of our journies are unique, and that's what can help separate us.
Great video, thank you!! Much of this really resonated with me, especially the parts about making mistakes. Your blunders really made me smile because I struggled so hard talking to camera when I first started my channel. Scripting is nearly impossible for me, for this very reason, and I've found it much easier and less stressfull to just speak as if I was speaking to a friend. Authenticity is where it's at, it removes so much of the stress!
Glad it was helpful!
I really resonate with your comments, I’ve been there and I appreciate your honesty.
What’s your next video about?
Thank you 🙏🏻
To give you some clarity find the intersection for your genius, I suggest writing 4 lists and finding the commonality.
1️⃣ is what you love doing number 2️⃣ is what does the world need from you in your perspective? Number 3️⃣ is what can you be paid for? A number 4️⃣? Is what you’re good at.
Find that intersection, that common thread and you will be off to the races!!
@@Steven-Thompson IKIGAI 🙏
If you know you know my friend get to it it brings so much clarity and focus!
This was so insightful. Just started being active on UA-cam and wowww, I am the niche ! Love this
You are very very welcome so what’s your next few steps on UA-cam? I’d love to know #Curious
Hey, thank you for your kind words and sharing insights into your journey.

Hey Steve, I sent an email to you regarding the 5 step process yesterday. Today's lesson 3...that chatgpt content matrix...MY WORD! THAT IS AMAZING!!!!!
Cheers 👋 pleased you liked it, how are you using it?
Thank you for this information, MUCH apprecited!
It’s my absolute pleasure. What was your biggest takeaway?
I like this guy. Thank you for your suggestions!
My pleasure! It’s great to have you here, what resonated with you?
I also was cutting out allof the emotion and raw feeling (aka life) for retention which did not retain
I appreciate your insights here on the basis that you took raw out and it didn’t fit with people. That’s great news goes to show what I teach. Works you lean into you do what works for you

Cheers
Sounds like you had some decent advice, keep being you my friend, thanks for sharing your story!
