She has grown on me. Her personality is hard to adjust to since she is so like unpersonable. She has grown. I take it to being camera shy and she gives a condensing regular face lol. However a lot of the nicest people are like that.
Love that she has a strict 9-5 schedule. I have the same thing and believe it or not it’s optimized my output and has done wonders for my overall health.
This was such a cool interview to watch. As a woman myself its great to see one on the MKBHD team doing so well.Everytime I see you on the podast or in a video I smile inside.
1. That's such a greaaaaat Thumbnail man, spot on 2. Just the idea of interviewing Mariah is awesome, let alone the fact that you got it. So nice you did this! 3. You’re a great interviewer and creator. Keep it up with this content. 4. Mariah is so nice. Very clever, smart, chill and cool... I feel like she should have her own channel actually.
“Sleep and drink water” - when I finally embraced that my editing life got better. When your mind loses the edge and you get tired, editing is pointless. Taking a break is probably the most important part of the process.
Wow, just found this video and want to say a huge thank you to you and Mariah for sharing her experience as a female video editor at the most well-known tech channel! I am also a video editor, working on videos for 3 channels now (on of our channels is 'TheFigCo', and it was useful to know about experience in MKBHD team, workflow and work life balance. I'm only 1 year in this profession, never thought I end up as a video editor, but it was always my passion. Our 2 editors are using DaVinci Resolve, and I'm the only one who loves FinalCut and I'm grateful that it's okay haha :) So thank you! That's an interesting journey and so unusual that Mariah has like a 9-5 normal schedule. I personally work remotely but I love it, built my own discipline so now I can handle my tasks. And also trying to fit my own youtube channel into this schedule )
31:45 is gold. Pretty motivational. I make electronics, including some writing drivers or designing models to house/mount the parts. Sometimes I'll spend what feels like a lifetime getting a circuit or chip to work well in my product, only to realize it "doesn't make sense" or "something is off" and its always 💔 I want to reshape this feeling into an appreciation for finding a simpler solution, or making the product better by using something faster/more efficient/more accurate. The amount of distraction is crippling. The further you are from people who can give you feedback, or look at something and recognize it as dumb, the harder it is to stay focused. Not being able to take that criticism means you should be making that thing for yourself. But if you love something you made, or you're making something you love, ignore the first bit of criticism, because you might be an artist.
I am a bit of an older generation, but it's funny and interesting to see someone who treats editing just as a job. From my experience, back in the days when you worked on the computer, you also had to be some kind of nerd or geek; otherwise, you would not have ended up in this area.
That was a great interview! And nice to get some more detail filled in about the MKBHD team and collaboration. And Mariah seems delightfully down-to-earth. You gotta love that pitch in and get things done attitude!
For motion graphics work, if the local graphics person can use Motion instead of AE, you'll be able to change a heap of things live on the timeline in FCP, way easier + more reliable than dynamic linking or MOGRTs. Or do the main animation in AE but add the text in Motion so it's editable? There are some nice workflows possible.
I just want to say that this was a very valuable listen. I went through this whole video while I was cleaning the house & found all the inside stuff so cool especially the perspectives both of you offered. I cant wait to have the time to Watch this whole thing uninterrupted, I feel like I should be taking notes! Thanks again!
Kind of surprised she said Final Cut has zero support for audio. I work for a media company that primarily used logic for everything and we use Final Cut solely because it plays so nicely with logic for audio. There are some great audio tools in Final Cut
Very cool insights into MKBHD post workflow! Mariah, thanks for sharing. Tony, very good, thoughtful questions. Kudos for that. More content like this, please.
Commenting to retweet this; it DOES feel like no back and forth, no banter like shows like Collin and Samir - would love to see more of this. More of your personality! Make them laugh so we can see their personalities as well
Just started this video but I totally agree with Mariah about premiere having the best audio editing capabilities! I think that is an aspect that not many people talk about when they make the "switching from premiere to...." videos.
My favourite mind on the MKBHD team. Mariah is the linchpin of everything they make. The best idea means nothing if it isn't presented the way she does. Genuinely one of my heroes.
For a one person show like myself, especially, since I’m still a nano channel, I found this video absolutely fascinating! The whole idea of having someone else working for the channel, and doing editing is such a fascinating concept to think about. It’s amazing to me how some of these channels are so large, that they really areindustries unto themselves. Definitely amazing. Not something I really aspiring to, but it is neat to see.
Love to see more conversations with people working behind the scenes. Well done! As a fellow podcaster I'd work on the overall flow and questions to keep it engaging. Any ideas who you'll talk to next?
File support & compatability is exactly why I stick with Premeire Pro. The assets & effects I like to use are there in the program I tried switching to DaVinci but being cut off from plugins & assets was an absolute no go for me
love her laptopskin and her vibe - she should have her own channel. its not difficult what marques does so 😂 by the way the reason editing used to be a woman space was because you needed a fine hand to edit real peaces of film.
THAT laptop skin is so incredible that I had to, no cap, rewind certain parts of the interview because I was focused on the skin design! Do you or anyone else know where it is from?
@@SimonWilke THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! This is one of the most hype things the I did not know that I still needed in my life! I appreciate you taking the time to share this. Seriously, thank you!
How is editing the Colossus robot footage. like I know it uses a Red camera do they just give you the final shot and you stick it in like any other shot or is it more complicated to work with than a normal shot? also you went to CES are we going to see you at more events?
Amazing video! It might be the editing style, but I think it would be nice to see more personality in your interviews. Right now, it feels like I'm reading a blog post or a Q&A with very little interaction between you and your guests. There's a lack of reactions, laughs, or personality. I watched until the end because the questions were really interesting and detailed-great job on that! However, adding these extras would add more color and make longer videos like this more fun and engaging to watch. The Colin & Samir channel is a great example of what I'm describing. Thank you for this video again, Tony!
This has been a WONDERFUL interview! Fantastic stuff, Tony. Mariah is awesome. Mariah, like many video editors, zig. I'm going to zag by saying... video editing for UA-cam videos should have no collaboration. I know it sounds crazy but hear me out. If you, as the video editor, have no say or collaboration in the pre production or production, then the people who do those things should have no say in the post production. Supply the video editor with notes and what you expect and then let them bring your vision to life. When 2/5/10 people all come in with their feedback, all that happens is the video gets watered down. It goes from being a unified cohesive work of art into a designed-by-committee piece of content. Let the video editor breathe and own it.
collaboration is absolutely a must on bigger channels.. rule number 1 as an editor "learn to kill your darlings" if you think only your way is right in an edit it just means you haven't learned to kill your editor ego yet. The greatest things in life are made by many people. There is a reason movies/ music videos/ and even big youtube videos have end credits.
Like this comment if you want Mariah back some time and leave your questions you'd like her to answer.
She's genuinely my favorite member of MKBHD's studio. It's always fun when she pops up in a video
2nd'd
Totally agree
The video of her and Ellis fixing the phone is so great!
Agreed
She has grown on me. Her personality is hard to adjust to since she is so like unpersonable. She has grown. I take it to being camera shy and she gives a condensing regular face lol. However a lot of the nicest people are like that.
So much respect for Mariah standing strong with the work life balance and leaving work at work but still being an amazing team player!
I got here from Mariah insta ✌🏼
That Waveform podcast place 👌🏼
Finally.. more of mariah..❤
Dude Mariah got a solo interview
Let’s goooo 🔥
Love that she has a strict 9-5 schedule. I have the same thing and believe it or not it’s optimized my output and has done wonders for my overall health.

You’re a great interviewer, Tony. You ask good questions and you let them talk without interrupting.

Killer interview. Mariah rules - the studio CES episode settled it. Thank you!

It's about the project, not about your feelings. That was a great quote

mkbhd inspired me to become a content creator and its awesome to see the awesome people like mariah that works with him!!
Mariah is awesome.
She is just too cool! Glad to hear more about her :)
Mariah for president

Mariah is really super cool, She can start UA-cam channel!!
I've being waiting for this podcast for a long time. Thanks Tony!
Great questions! So great to hear about the workflow process and also schedule of other editors.

Great interview. Always love Mariah taking center stage.
This was great! Thanks guys!
I am so glad you guys are switching to FCP, because I just started learning it ❤😊
I love that you got to interview her, but it the way of editing out your replies to her answer makes it feels like a survey instead of an interview

this was an interesting episode & learned a lot about the mkbhd channel
ngl, she looks like she's doing the interview of you
Lol that's fine with me.
Very interesting insights, thank you!

I tried switching to DaVinci but being cut off from plugins & assets was an absolute no go for me
Really great interview!
great interview!!!!
good interview man
Here for.mariah
I found this interview so fascinating. I'd like to ask if she'd ever consider using Davinci Resolve.
Mkbhd and Waveform Podcast are amazing.
UA-cam recommends good stuff.
Great interview, Loved it!
AMAZING! Subbed!
I love the workflow of this vid!
You broke the mystery of Mariah!
Great interview and great interview questions!
16:06 you can easily combine AE and FCP. When you overwrite your initial AE-export FCP will auto-relink to the new file.
Really great interview mate!
Mariah is the realest in the game
Very nice interview
im curious as to her story on how she got hired with the mkbhd team. don't think i've heard an angle of that discussed

This is a great interview and very insightful.
Me one minute into the video: wow she really has access to those crazy expensive cameras and microphones 😂
this was such a great interview.
Great Video!
This is a very good interview
Good for her.
Would love to hear more about "zero support for audio in FCP"
Good interview. :)
Great interaction
Nice podcasts, keep it up!

@@prolific_visual great points! 🤩
Definitely want to know how they all handle notes?
Nice Video
Ask her what she makes bro!
What's the MIC name that Mariah is usign in this video? The one with the red accents. Can anyone tell me, please?
It's an RE27 but marques got it customized by debrand. It's originaly silver.
I don't want to be disrespectfull with Mariah, so I'm just going to say that I'd like to start a family with her.
Where u get these info from
That light on the left is kind of distructing…kindly check on that

Ummm… final cut has audio support
Nope
GeorgeNotFound female version :/
funny enough my best edits are late night edits
congrats rhodesa
does nobody know about DaVinci Resolve? or is it considered bad?
Oh, she looks like she's 16, and then "I edit since 2008! 😅
