I opted out of information sharing with my car company
Toyota and Lexus are doing this too
I wondered how my insurance company knew my mileage. Then I realized it was because I had my car inspected at the Lexus dealership. So they are reporting service and inspection information too.
They know where you're going and how long you stayed. Soon they will put limits on both.
Makes you want to drive older “better built” vehicles without this advanced technology!!
Great video. Thank you. In today's world, you gotta assume Big Brother is watching you EVERYWHERE. Thank you for ensuring I'll NEVER buy a lousy GM car.
Other countries have a privacy law for this and we don't?
Because our politicians are in bed with the people that need this data.
I ordered a Rav4 and got my deposit back because if one is doing it, all are doing it. On the hunt for a used, older Toyota right now.
I disable onstar on any gm vehicle. You use to just be able to remove a fuse when you didnt have a infotainment screen, now you have to do a little more work for it.
Nationwide insurance company, has a plan called Smart miles ,if you drive less than 5,000 miles Per year, you get a discount on your insurance
Almost all Toyotas made after 2020 now have the cellular chip with built-in tracking GPS module. The car will also track your speed heartbreaking how fast you takeoff etc. .WHAT’S MORE DISTURBING IS IT COMES ON AS DEFAULT WHEN YOU BUY THE CAR YOU HAVE TO CONTACT THEM TO OPT OUT YET ALONE THEY’RE SAYING THAT PEOPLE DON’T REALLY GET OPT OUT. IN ANOTHER STATEMENT THEY ADMIT SELLING INFORMATION TO PARTIES. IF I WOULD’VE KNOWN THAT I WOULD not BOUGHT TOYOTA PRODUCT.
Lexus is doing this too
I wondered how my insurance company knew my mileage. Then I realized it was because I had my car inspected at the Lexus dealership. So they are reporting service and inspection information too.
They don't care how fast you drive- only if you hit something and they have to pay.
My car insurance put a tracker on my cell phone. I believe it is the same idea.
These devices could cause your expensive computer in your car to go bad. $2000 repair. A OBD2 ready is the only device that should be plugged into the device.
Right on! That port is ONLY designed for a scan tool, and nothing else.
This is Black Mirror level stuff
See why old cars are making a comeback?
Yes Honda
It's ALL about the MONEY!
Dont be surprised to discover other carmakers are doing the same.
GM completely sucks anyway. They have zero quality control. Why woukd anyone buy that junk brand
Umm... Tesla insurance (which i don't use) uses your driving data to establish your insurance rates... They're right up front with an app that shows your "safety score" and the lower that score is, the higher your premium will be and vice versa...
State Farm is constantly honking at me about their little doohickey that plugs into your obd port to track your car info while you're driving to determine your rates as well. THEY'RE ALL IN ON IT!!!!
Basically, it's them, along with the government, all saying "F your privacy"
WOW!!! THANK YOU FOR REVEALING THIS CRAP!!
Data is the new oil and gas. It is currency that has market value. If someone will pay for it, there are at least 1000 people who will find a way to get it (with or without your permission) and sell it (again, with or without your permission).
I have a honda2019 with on star,my ins increased 100% over the last2yrs
I could be wrong but but even if you disconnect Onstar Lexis Nexis information is a permanent record like a credit score?
It's not just insurance companies tracking you.
I vist a local business, next door to a Japanese steak house, and when I leave, I get a message asking how my experience is about the Steak house.
Tesla already does this if you subscribe to their Tesla auto insurance as I do. My rates were great when I first got it but I noticed after each software update it would increase the number of false alerts esp when a car front of me is turning left or right. Now my rates are almost double.
No way Jose!
Good show. At least with GM I would think you could pull the fuse for onstar to stop it.
We value ur money.😮
Tesla puts live-feed cameras and microphones inside their cars and know if you are using your phone with the cameras, etc. This is worse.
California privacy law is effectively federal law - multi-state companies generally use it as their standard for customers everywhere. A federal law would be better so that those companies don't have to worry about 50 different sets of rules to follow. And I'm no fan of having more federal laws.
I wonder about my new Subaru. But my insurance company had me use an app to monitor my driving and I get a $120 discount on my 6-month premium for using it. I’ve been lax in knowing whether my info is being shared so I have to look into that. Maybe saving $20/month isn’t worth it. In the app, it shows where I went, miles, time, everything. What stores I shop in, my bank, friends and family homes, just everything. I was shocked when it shows me on the map going to a fast food drive-through. lol.
Insurance companies are selling your information for more than $20 a month. They aren't doing you any favors.
@@jimhammer6702 Good point.
My friend used her insurance company’s app with her Subaru and she saved for one year, but the following year the almost doubled her premium. She ended up going to another company.
@@cre8tivity87 I just renewed and am into my second 6-month premium. I might ride it out a bit longer, I mean, if they’re sharing my info, it’s already on the dark web anyway due to data breaches unfortunately. If my next premium is outrageous, I’ll shop around like your friend did.
What would you expect from GOVERNMENT Motors?
If you have your smartphone (android or apple based) with you, it’s all there as well (or could be). And just because you don’t subscribe to that service, the car’s computer system is still collecting (also think of the TPMS). Ive understood that the info is sold to insurance co whether or not you are subscribed. For most ppl, the thought of having privacy these days is fallacy. Seems like we easily give up our privacy, then rights, then freedoms for convenience. Sad.
Looks like another good reason to not buy a GM product!
People really need to research those insurance apps that monitor your driving as well. Google what attorneys have to say about those.
Spoiler: They aren’t for YOUR benefit.
Un plugged since 2004
It’s in all new cars I believe. I think congress helped.
this is on-star, not in all vehicles.
You just realized this? Cmon Clark.....
Clark citing the New York Post really makes me reevaluate some of the topical news stories he brings up.
Partially disagree with Clark here. If you drive like an asshole, your insurance premiums should be higher. Also, if you use these devices you usually get a discount on your premiums. With that being said, these companies shouldn't know where you go and where you are located at all times, so I'm more inclined to agree.
Hope they go under
