I love Aldi. Favorite grocery store. No coupons, no loyalty cards, no-nonsense.
We curb surfed a very expensive patio set from the rich neighborhood down the street and replaced the cushion fabric and sewed it by hand after a trip to JoAnns with a 50% off coupon of course for $200. The set new was on sale for $2,000. Still going strong 3 years later. The fabric was the highest quality UV resistant JoAnns offered.
All about the UV!
Just make sure the dogs don't chew em up!
@@Petesworkshop2225 we got 2 Huskies they don't like vinegar
What a steal! 💚
They have Sunbrella fabric at stores other than upholstery shops. Also, there are home sewers who may be able to recover your cushions cheaper than the stops and give you a beautiful result. Maybe check it out as an option?

This is my favorite Clark video! We are a one-income immigrant family. Bought our first property at 27 and paid by age 30. Currently, five years into a 15 yr mortgage on second property. Also have a small cottage we paid for in cash. Three small kids, two with major disabilities. We have major $ put away for retirement and saving toward college funds. This mom is a minimalist who is allergic to shopping. No trust fund, no help from anyone. Just frugal savers with one car and no consumer debt!
I am 81 YO and I have a 2015 Honda Odyssey with 30,000 miles. Last year I thought I would piss away some money on a new car instead of giving it to the kids when I croak. After looking at the new cars and the prices and some of the new features, like that feature that turns the engine off when you stop, I decided to just keep my Odyssey until one of us dies first. The odds are it will be me.
We have always owned Honda's. If yours only has 30,000 miles on it that baby isn't even broke in. Definitely keep and service accordingly. It will not let you down.
@@Nickelson28 You are right. The only thing I don't like about the Odyssey is it has a timing belt and an interference engine so the recommended schedule for changing the belt I 105,000 miles or seven years. The charge for this is about $1,200 which includes changing the water pump, belt tightener, etc. With an interference engine if the belt breaks while driving, the pistons hit the valves and you are looking at about 5K in repairs. I already have 8 years on this belt so according to Honda I should have this work done now. I am going to wait another three or four years and then have it done, even though I probably will not have 50K miles on the Honda. By then I will be 84 or 85 and that will be the last time that I will have to do it if I am not dead before then.
Yes I remember our 1st Accord my timing belt went out on the Washington parkway. After that we always tried to stay ahead of that ole serpentine belt and any issues. Pray you can drive it for many more years with no issues!
I make $130k a year. Home paid off, kids all grown. Ill never buy a new vehicle at these prices.
My Honda dealer has 339 cars on the lot. When you stick to overpricing, you don't sell cars. Even with limited supply, people are going to make other choices. I was ready to buy a new car 2 years ago but when I saw prices, I looked at used cars. When I saw used prices, I spent the money on my existing car. Today, 50k miles later, I've decided that cars really can go forever with simple, continued maintenance.
Be careful about saying electric costs nothing to run. Here in New England, where we're powered by natural gas generators and with strangled pipelines that can't be expanded, we're paying 45.5 cents a kWh, meaning that EVs all cost more per mile than a gas car. Do the math before saying what the EV marketing liers say about being cheaper than gas.
The only places folks pay 45 cents per kWh are with DC fast chargers in certain locations, which should only be used for road trips. National average for Tesla supercharging is 28 cents per kWh. National average for electric power at home is 16 cents per kWh. My father pays 9 cents in southern Alabama. Even places with high peak rates have much lower off-peak rates - for example in Colorado Springs (my city) peak rates can be around 24 cents vs 5 cents off peak. Charge EVs off peak or use solar. I looked up New England electric rates - which range from 10 cents to 29 cents per kWh depending on the location and utility company.
Absolutely correct. I drive a 19 year old Toyota Avalon. Clean. Runs like the first day. I have no control over parking lot rash. I simply shortened the mileage and time intervals between servicings, take notes on recommendations, buy parts ahead, and keep track of service and repairs.
@@JasonTaylor-po5xcso, the solar setup is free?
@@bradc6199 The point is to charge the EV during off peak hours or if you have solar, use that instead since that would be cheaper than peak rates. Can you get solar installed for "free" - sorta. There are many companies that will install solar on your house (if you own) and then they become the power company (PPA). It's generally cheaper but you never "own" the panels. If you plan to be in your home more than 8 years, it is better to finance/purchase a system instead of a PPA.
Haha to Honda
The dealer markup is ridiculous. When is that going to be gone? Unfortunately I’m interested in a Toyota.
It's slowly getting better. Widen your search to surrounding states to see if you can find a better deal. 💚
My son purchased a cherry 2015 Lexus LX350 with 60K miles for $19K in March 2020. Now they are being sold for $30-32 K. Used EVs are not a good deal according to Internet mechanic Scotty Kilmer. I have purchased all my vehicles remotely. I would fly In and pick them up after I identified them on Autotrader. I started this path years ago. It is a great idea to shop cars nationally. I also shop the discount stores discussed in this video. Clark rocks!
This is the way to do it! 👏👏👏
BTW - Just searched Scotty Kilmer's thoughts on used EVs, and he says it's a good idea in his video. He does not suggest used hybrid vehicles though. 🤷♂
Sell that Lexus ASAP!
My son drives a used car on business every day. He bought the last two cars nationally. The last one was maintained in Florida. He flew down from Delaware and drove it back.
Wealthy people shop the discount stores and like the deal because that is how they got their money to begin with. Frugality becomes ingrained and automatic when you've been practicing it all your life.
Yep, my wife and I both retired at 50 years old, still shop at the dollar store.
Aldi is a block down the street from Costco where I shop - bonus! 🎉
I’m very frugal but I have a tight household budget, so always room to learn. You have empowered me to shop at the Dollar Tree without shame!
Try ETSY for the patio furniture cushions replacements.
Great reporting
I love Aldi because it’s so much faster to shop there. Fewer isles, less variety of products, and ultra fast checkout due to large barcodes. The fact I save money too is just a bonus.
I agree... Say you need a couple of ingredients for a meal you are preparing... Why would you go in the mega store and crazy people and fuss with the crazy self checkout and stopped on your way out to the treck half way across the parking lot so big you may loose your car..? Yes, Aldi is like a grocery convince store
But a nice bonus, lol.
I drive my 20-year old car to Aldi, and no one knows my networth is almost 2 million.
The average millionaire buys a 2-3 year old used car and drives until the wheels fall off.
My car is only 19 years old. There is no Aldi in my area. So, I go to Dollar Tree and Smart and Final. House is a teardown with the estimated internet comp value of $1.9 million plus. Had an uncle die at 97. One day I asked him why he kept buying the same car in different colors. He had been a public accountant (a concept pre-dating CPA). He said he repainted his car every 5 years whether it needed it or not! He had it for over 40 years. I repainted two cars. Thinking I will not repaint the 19 year old car because I keep patching the upholstery and only drive about 300-400 miles a month.
Thank you ...wish there was more details on where to buy cars at a cheaper price with car type and which region.
Here's the average used car prices per state: clark.com/cars/average-used-car-prices/
You can search for cheap used cars online at: Craigslist, AutoTrader, iSeeCars, the Klipnik message boards and CarGurus. Also check out no-haggle buying options like Carvana, CarMax, Costco and USAA.
Hope this helps! 💚
Carmax prices are still ridiculous. $19,998 for a 5-year-old used Honda Civic LX (base trim) is not acceptable.
Their business model seems to be paying the most for trade-in to try to get people to buy from them.
I'm still stalling , car market is nuts! Also thanks for mentioning Aldi, love them.
People should of been on a buying strike for the last 10yrs on these high end cars
I told my wife we need to go to the Dollar store. I didn't say we need to go pick up this or that, so she asked what for and I just said, we need to go because Clark said to. She just rolled her eyes. Some people just don't get it.
Bread crumbs, canned goods, gift bags...
Some things are cheaper at Dollar Tree, some are not. Price awareness is important.
@@kenyonbissett3512 Agreed, same with Walmart, Aldi, Amazon.
As far as supply chain we were played, for months we heard all about the thousand ships off the calif shore, then one day, it’s all better now. That was media manipulation, then you mention car dealers had cars with expensive options only, most of those expensive options use the chips that were supposed to be on back order, again we were played. The last three years has been one distraction after another at our expense. Love your show try to listen to everyone. But being retired now I am more cynical then ever
I called Acura in Abington PA today and was offered $500. off a 23 leftover. Two words Acura.
Driving a “high end car” is hardly an indicator of personal wealth in America.
💯💯💯
Might very well mean the opposite.
When you consider most BMW drivers are leasing instead of purchase - they are pretend rich, not actually rich.
The people impressed by fancy cars are the wannabes
Do people still engage in that type of f00lishness?
Clark, my local GMC Chevy has the largest inventory of trucks I’ve seen in years. They aren’t moving and I suspect even deeper discounts will be available end of year
Good thinking! Be sure to check for Black Friday deals. 💚
End of the month, end of the year sales quotas. End of the year 'get it off the lot NOW' said the accountant for tax purposes.
Exactly
Nice trend to see. I rarely buy new vehicles because of the killer depreciation - but I made an exception when I wanted to buy a Tesla Model Y a couple years ago. The used prices were _higher_ than just buying new - so I did that instead. Great car so far, I have driven it over 25,000 miles in 2 years - including many long road trips. However, I'm super glad things are returning to normal. Used cars should always be less expensive than a new one unless it reaches "classic" or collector status.
Thanks Clark for your gracious and positive answer to the 40 year old single person looking to possibly get a house-boat to live on (to save $$$). Recently, I heard a similar question to another financial radio team, and all the team did was belittle and dismiss the single person in their 40s when they remarked they would rather hold off on buying a house. Thank you for always being kind, and being willing to listen to various viewpoints.
We belittle big monster mega banks, not our listeners 💚
Enjoy your information about car deals and discounted store I again with you they do have quality products at lower cost
Great info Clark!! I’m going to buy a vehicle 🚗
Gwinnett place Honda in the Atlanta area has more than 50 Honda Accords on their lot. So even they are affected.
The first time I watched your show and didnt like it. But now, I love the way you present.
I'm in Portland, hardly a store besides Albertsons and Safeway or Walmart. I like your go to logic with no "honestly." crap. You are always honest.
Azure in Dufur, Oregon delivers.
Grocery Outlet, Fred Meyer.
I love Clark Howard.
I’m not scared of buying things at Aldi, but I wouldn’t buy medicine at a dollar tree. They’ve had issues before with medicine and even things like toothpaste years ago and it’s almost always cheaper to buy a bigger quantity at Costco or Walmart.
Thanks Clark for the sound advice over the years,You helped me retire at age 62.I think alot of people woke up to the garbage that some of these dealers are selling. Get a non turbo 4 cylinder Honda or Toyota vehicle and call it a day.
no
@@acornsucks2111why? 🤔
My 2016 Mazda CX5 has only 50.0 miles on it. I plan to keep it indefinitely. I've only spent 330.00 on it in addition to regular maintenance. I'm happy with it.
People who buy NEW vehicles off the dealers’ lots are not very smart. As soon as you drive a new vehicle off the lot, thousands of dollars of value are lost. Buy a vehicle that is at a minimum 2 - 4 years old!
I NEVER had a need for a new car, or truck, I found trucks good used ones, no Toy or Japans. I had all 3 GM, Ford Dodge. no problem, today I drive a old Dodge van, its ok for me I can fix it, mostly, if I feel too old, then I know someone 49 years yonger.
Not necessarily, it can be a good option. Who cares if the car loses value if you are not planning on selling it for a long time ? What does it matter ?
Ok,
Thank you Team Clark.
I bought very good quality covers with a wide variety of sizes through Amazon. The fabric is for me equivalent to the feel and toughness of sumbrella.

I WOULD NOT WANT A ELECTRIC VEHICLE OUR ELECTRIC GRIDS CAN NOT HANDLE IT . I LIKE THE GAS CARS .
I use Aldi as a quick convince store... 😎
Moreover, some of the wealthy you find in an Aldi parking lot don't drive showy cars at all. Some of the frugalist are there with a Prius or Accord Hybrid.
O M G . . . Almost like buying a house ! Outta site . . .
We took a bus trip in Costa Rica. A woman with her 92 yo Mom, and a man with his 89 yo Dad were on the trip. They had fun! We had fun! It wasn't expensive.

💯 correct!
UGO is another store but mostly in the South...save a lot of money and actually a fun store to shop in
Also, could you cover how an average lady could safely buy a good repo car ? I would not feel comfortable going to an auction in person. I couldnt figure out how to find local repos currently ..
My friend in Mexico purchased a 2021 Toyota rav4 for $25,000 not the cheap one. Saw alot of cars & small pickup from other country.

Bidenflation.
I was just saying the other day. look at all the nice cars at walmart that are parked near garden center entrance. Its not because rich people buy plants there. Its the entrance we used to not be as seen shopping there. LoL But we still shop there if we are smart!
Foreclosure is a great way to buy, but very competitive. A lot of professional money will take them all.
What do you think sbout Lidl? I believe the owners are brothers who split.???
I hope someone benefits because i wanted a predriven vehicle, not because i needed one, but my daughter took our 2016 to college and me and the wife liked using the car to run quick errands. Well we saw a predriven crossover priced pretty good but when we talked to the sales person they said that price has went up by 12 percent and I asked them why and they said they were allowed to do this. I brought three vehicle's from this dealership. They learned that day because they lost me for life. I will buy a hybrid soon and a new dealership will benefit.
My car is 19 years old. Probably will not buy another. However, I gave it some thought. Over the years, I have had great mechanics, not dealership mechanics. They always have a customer who stiffs the mechanic on repairs. The mechanic gets a lien and has the car sold off by a middleman. If I ever want another car, I am going to have my mechanic find one. I don't care what model or what condition so long as it gets me from point a to point b.
Unless, the condition of Aldi stores is terrible just for the ones closest to me. I personally don’t like to shop at Aldi or the Dollar Store simply because the condition of the store. Why do I have to shop in poor conditions just to get a discount ? Does the store have to be poorly maintained with floors that are dirty. I will go into Five Below and Pop Shelf, which I consider discount stores. The condition of the store is bright and clean.
The Aldi stores in my area (4 of them) are always very clean.
I really wish we have Aldi in Northern California, we have grocery outlet and Trader Joes.
Aldi is no where near the quality or variety of TJs. I.have 3 Aldi within 5 miles and aside from their chocolate, TJs blows them away.
Azure delivers nationwide. They are in Dufur, OR.
Sunbrella outdoor fabric does not deteriorate after six years. I've had mine for almost 10 years (uncovered) and they are still vibrant -- well worth the price I paid.

Regarding your title to the video… rich people shop at all of the dealerships that most people used to.
I saw a Rolls Royce in the 99cent Store!
Patio cushions are easy. Walmart, Lowe's, home depot and target all sell replacement cushions. Measure and see if you can find something a similar size. Lowe's this time of year does a clearance sale. I was just there a few days ago. They had outdoor patio furniture up to 75% off. This did include patio cushions.
Good tips! 🙌
Use a credit card with points to buy discounted Lowe’s gift cards. If you are a veteran, use your 10% discount. Cushion $200 - 75% = $50. $50 - 10% veteran discount = $45. $45-15%($6.75)=$38.25. Use the difference to buy UV covers to protect the cushions in future.
Take your Uncle to Algodones Mexico for a fun day trip...
10:00 john… call your local awning company to recover the patio set. There is a great one in Portland, Pike Awning,
Howard, an average is an absolute number not a range of numbers. So, simply take $36000 & $39000, add them & divide by two. That's the correct approach.
Toyota still not having inventory on the Grandhighlander go ahead and try to get a hybrid quote. $5k on market adjustments plus OEM add ons and additional add ons at the port. Insane it looks like it will take at least 2 yrs to fix this trend. Go ahead a shop the country you will still get the same answer. Good Luck finding one at MSRP with no add ons.

For the question about the grandson and financial aid...
Depends what kind of custody the grandparents have. If it's guardianship, this works in favor for the grand son for financial aid. There is a question on the FAFSA that asks if the student was ever in a guardianship, if the answer is yes, then the student would get "independent" funding, most likely full Pell grants and the grandparents income would not go into the equation.
If they "adopted" the grandson (less likely this is the case) their income would count just as if they were the birth parents.
Easy money for decades is the big csuse of this. Keep raising intrest rates.

Supply still low relative to pre-pandemic. For example, in Montana among 3 Honda dealers there are zero Honda Pilot LX on the lots, and only one Honda Pilot Sport on the lots.
There are zero base trim Subaru Ascent in Montana and in Alaska...states where Subarus are extremely popular.
Supply may go lower with (if) the UAW strike for Detroit-based vehicles. Demand is lower because interest rates are at a 20-year high.
I'm amazed at how many people are willing to spend thousands of dollars on vehicles and accessories that are off road capable. Ninety nine percent of these are never off the pavement. Is it a fad? The domestic manufactures are sure betting on it continuing especially Ram/Jeep.
I just moved to Colorado Springs and my wife noticed that very few folks are driving minivans here. We probably need to get chains for the winter. LOL

Aldi’s drive me crazy, the inventory is so…random. It might be the place for you if you enjoy treasure hunts, but I’d rather go to a store that practically guarantees that a certain item will be available.
Aldi sells the 15,000 most popular products in America and then have rotating offerings of other items weekly. Ex: every few weeks they will have Italian week and sell many many extra Italian food items (high quality). Same with Asian, Mexican, German... They will always have the basic 15,000.
Aldi is actually the name brand products which may not be "perfect" and they have an off-brand name they sell it under. An Aldi employee told me. Remember, we don't eat the "packaging" just the product inside. I shop here because I can save money. Aldi just bought out Winn-Dixie.
I bought a new Lexus. Are prices really going that much lower? I paid MSRP. Manufacturers are making higher end cars.
Why going outside my market will safe me money on purchasing a new car? How is that work?
We just did this. We live in NC and bought both of used vehicles from different states. SC for my van and VA for my husband’s truck. We found many dealers in NC wouldn’t even entertain negotiating or even respond to emails.
Good contains
But SOUNDS are in and out, make it hard to hear
We'll listen for them and try to minimize sounds. Thanks for letting us know! 💚
Nothing cures high prices like high prices
Buying cars nationally sounds like a great way to save money. However, after searching for used cars for several months, our experience has been that many cars that look perfect in photos turn out to have unacceptable defects when seen in person. This is frustrating after driving an hour or two to look at the car. I can't imagine how disappointing (and expensive) it would be after flying across the country, not to mention that one would have to buy a last-minute plane ticket home if deciding not to purchase the car. Another risk would be that the vehicle might sell before you had a chance to purchase it.
CANADA
Clark, for the respondents grandfather's first international trip. Why didn't you just suggest Canada? Same language different culture but not a shock to the system of someone 80 + years old. They are starting to go off season now so the prices are starting to drop. For the two of them they could get away with less than $1,200 for airfare as well as hotel.
Great suggestion! 🙌
I absolutely love Lidl and Dollar Tree! I have prepaid phone service for 3 lines for $41 per month through US Mobile. I used to pay $100 per month for 2 lines through Verizon.
Hey i need to check out that us mobile I got cricket right now for $100 - 4 lines
@@_CashFlowTy it’s really great! You can pick your data and share that between all the lines. The first line is included for free and then $8 per each additional line. We have the 12GB line, but they have larger amounts and unlimited plans as well!
Most people who have money, have it because they don't waste it.
Depends how you value time. If I make $100/hr running my business or providing services to others, if I take 2 hours to go shopping - that costs me $200 plus the cost of whatever I purchased. If I hire someone to do my shopping for me at $25/hour, that costs me $50 plus shopping costs - saving me a theoretical $150 for the trip. Yes, it is possible that I could save some money by making more frugal buying decisions or understanding the value of a sale - but it is unlikely be make up the difference. The trick is to ensure you're doing something productive or of high value during that time - like spending time with family or working on your business.
Well {seem} I'll bet many with {high end car} are shopping down stream out of necessity.
Wait till the repos start coming in droves if u have cash you’ll be getting a great deal
I’m fine with the prices at Aldi but not Trader Joe’s. A lot of items sold at Trader Joe’s are the same items sold as Green or All Natural under other brand names through stores like Walmart and many mainstream supermarkets for less without getting elbow in the stomach because of the pretentious narrow isles at Trader Joe’s.
Agree.
I bought a PKG of Concord grapes at HT for almost 5.00 and then when I went to TJ I found the same identical PKG for 3.59. Go figure.
Aldi has a GREAT refund policy. If it isn't fresh or right, they will replace the item AND pay you back the amount you spent. Double guarantee! I only had to use it ONCE in 6 years, and it was a non-Aldi's brand, a name brand item!!!!!
You guys know that Aldi and Trader Joes are "sister companies" right ? One brother owns Aldi and the other brother owns TJ's. Thats why the food is so similar in many cases. Like the large chocolate bars.
A major chain fabric store carries outdoor fabric. Also fabric can be bought online.

Had a deal for a nice Kia EV then bait and switch. Went home ordered a Tesla and had it one week later for a price they had discounted from inventory. Couldn’t be more pleased.
EVs are overpriced just like flat panel TVs were. I paid $3500 for a 40" TV in 2006 that I could now buy for $400. Early adopting new technology elicits good feelings until the next big thing happens or the market floods.
The waiting list on toyota models is over one year now 😫😫
In 10 years get ready to pay $100,000 to $150,000 for a small base car. Very few Toyota’s and Honda’s on the lots now because people want to buy a car that will last more then 3-4 years.
Who trusts the dealerships. I go to one and there are few new cars. So maybe their floor planning new vehicles but leaving them at port of entry. So it makes it look like there are none. Fake scarcity. The heck with them….I don’t really need new but would like one. I can wait. Mine only has 75,000 for a 2011 model?
Electric vehicles don't do so well in the winter, especially in extreme cold weather. Batteries lose charge sometimes, almost 50% after driving a few miles. YT Mechanic Scotty Kilmer agrees. I personally would buy a hybrid . California used vehicles with high miles are still selling at higher prices. Not everyone can fly out of state to buy a car. Not everyone making a 6 figure income.
3:12 why except Honda & Toyota dealerships
I think they sell quicker cos they last longer.
He said in another episode that demand is still very high on these brands so prices are not coming down.
Yep, higher demand for Hondas & Toyotas so people are buying them.
