The 17WMR has more energy at 100 yards than the .22 mag, but only 60% of the sectional density. Sectional density is a big factor in penetration. I DOUBT the 17 WMR vaporized. I think it went through the first jug and bounced off the second one.
I don't trust the .17 rimfire caliber for hunting or self-defense. It is worthless! The .22 MAGNUM rimfire is good for self-defense and small game hunting.
I did this test when the 17 hmr first was hot years ago. The 22 mag the right bullet will drop a deer with a heart or lung shot. Also feathers are tough and the 22 mag will get the job done at suprising distance. You just discovered one of the 17hmrs flaw. Penetration. Small critters it rears up within distance, but honestly a 22lr is better if you plan on your target being groceries. Past the Long Rifle the magnum comes into play, but can be used for both. Just more expensive than 22lr. The 32grain maxi-v+ explodes water jugs pretty well. Nice video! Keep'em coming!

Agreed. I'd love to see more 1:14" twist barrels & better B.C. 40 -50gr projectiles & better crimping. Less drop & drift , & slower expansion & more penetration. We have 22lr & 17 hmr for small game , the 22 mag has the ability to take smaller game but the extra ability to tackle slightly larger stuff & less meat damage.
My money was on the .22 mag for penetration, and I guessed right! The extra weight and bullet density gives it more energy and penetration power. However, I bet that .17 stays more accurate out a little further, and they’re ideal for coyote hunting out to about 150-200 yrds with minimal damage to the hides 👍🏼

Did my testing on both as well, was impressed with the penetration of the 17hmr compared to 22 mag. 22lr spinning targets did not penetrate with 22 mag but the 17hmr drilled holes through the plates. 50 yards, love the hmr on rodents, absolutely annihilates them. Love both but my go to is the 17.
Great comparison. Obviously, the heavier .22 mag round retains more energy at longer range, that's the main reason I've never gotten on the .17 cal bandwagon, but I have shot a few and they are fun, and do have their place, just not in my gun cabinet.

They are both good for certain things. I would say for squirrel, rabbit, crows, etc .17HMR is perfect. Coyote, Fox, Racoon, etc. .17 is too light and .22WMR is the ticket.
Cousin Jim, a retired Army officer, asked me to sight in his CZ 22LR bolt action with a Sweet 16 scope on it. He wanted to be able to hit the X at 100 yds. I only had a communication problem it seems. I spent about ½ an hour getting down to the X ring. But, I had to give up on hitting the X. As I explained to Cousin Jim, " I can a hair above the X. Or I can hit a hair below the X. I just cain't hit the X." And he says, "just keep trying, Chuck, watch your breathing, you can do it!". But I finally gave up and took that rifle back to him outside of Spartanburg. A week later he called and said, "Chuck! You're right on it! What were you complaining about? Every shot is In the X Ring! You cain't ask for better than that!" "Jim", I replied, "you said I had to hit the X!"
Should have used a cci game point for the 17hmr it is designed for coyotes and is also a hollow point, it would have made it into jug three, thanks for the videos!!!
I picked the .22 mag over the 17 hm. that is why I own a .22 mag savage, and it is a tack driver, looking at the savage B22 Magnum precision for target shooting. At that range I would even put a .22 LR. would penetrate more than the .17hmr. Using bolt action rifles My pick for rifles is Savage, they all shoot very tight groups. IF the .22mag is a savage and not accurate I would be sending it back for repairs, all my .22lr and my .22 mag are tack drivers..
Amazing how in your other video the 22-250 went through 2 jugs and the 22 mag went through 4! If that's not proof that sometimes slower= more penetration!
The HMR is doing exactly what it's designed to do - give up its energy quickly and have limited penetration. I've shot a LOT of rabbits and foxes with it here Down Under mostly using the 17gr Vmax load which is about the most fragile load and it gets the job done nicely. Even shot a few small hogs with it when it was what I had with me.
Living anywhere from the Mason Dixon Line south, if I could have but only one caliber of bullet and no other ..........it would certainly be the 22 Magnum and for very many reasons! . I have believed so and said so for the last 30 years ! I am also a big believer in CCI Rimfire Ammo for longer than that, use 30 and 40 grain . It pleases me greatly all that I have seen accomplished with this round and a in the many different firearms ! It's not for just anybody but in the hands of marksman..........it's something very special. By the way and not that it matters much but The 22 Magnum round went through 4 of the gallon jugs and into the 5th jug , appearing to have almost punching thru the back of that fifth jug . The 22 mag CCI round has more profound changes in how it reacts on and thru its impact than most other calibers.....like water filled jugs compared to meat and bones or phone books.
Sweet video....I'm a 22 mag guy over the 17 myself but I sure didn't think the mag would have done that.....Now I know....I just love shooting my Uberti stallion 5.5 revolver in 22 mag.
I know this video is old but I have since tried out a bunch of different 22wmr rounds. The TNT versions are much more explosive and lower penetration. A physical comparison, the hollow point cavity is significantly larger than on "regular" hollow points. So I suspect that this also contributed to the 17hmr's lower penetration in this test whereas something like a Vmax might go deeper.
Man, I forgot all about the ammo test with the dog treats commercial. We had a red and white beagle like Junior. His name was Milo. Dang I miss that dog.
Both of these bullets have similar energy equations. Where the energy of the HMR (137 ft lbs) is from the velocity and the WMR (140 ft lbs) the weight of the bullet. But the design of the HMR bullet allows all the energy transferred out, staying in 1 milk jug. Where as the 22 mag transfers it energy forward with the bullet for better penetration. For hunting I want that energy in my kill. So critters smaller than coons the HMR is preferred for hunting. For critters like coyotes, a WMR penetration through ribs and such is preferred. But both can do either job.
What can you hunt with the 17 that the 22 wouldn't be better at? I get it that the 17 can hit something at a greater distance, but what can it make a cleaner kill on? Paper punching is a means to an end to me.
@@ferengiprofiteer9145 The bigger advantage is really in the environment you hunt in. I hunt a lot of alfalfa farm fields and low grass prairie. The extra range and accuracy is great. Easier for kids since there is less bullet lift/drop to account for. When hunting in sage brush, sticks, tall grass, or wind, my friends with a 22 mag have an advantage. The HMR seems too light to get through any of that without ripping it's self apart. They are so similar they serve the same purpose, a 22 mag is not on my radar to buy. I wouldn't sell or trade my 17 HMR only to get a 22 mag. And my friends with 22 mag love thier guns too. I wouldn't recommend someone switching either, because you are right that neither is really better when it comes to harvesting an animal, or shooting paper.
@@drewhobbs6837 Prairie dogs! I didn't think of that. I don't have that varmint. I have coyotes, bobcat, coons, and otters for varmints. I eat the squirrels, rabbits, beavers, and feral hogs I hunt. Squirrels and rabbits are made for my pellet gun anyway.
I definitely didn't expect those results, very interesting. I would never have guessed that the 22mag would have had that much more penetration than the .17HMR. I own both so I'll keep that in mind. Nice test.
The 17hmr very likely blew up, hence no penetration as such. I had a 22 mag for yrs and I found that the hollow points did not expand much. I saw a vid in UA-cam a few yrs ago that showed a 22 mag. of the Remington variety that was specifically a Jacketed Soft Point using ballistic gel compared to other varieties and - The cavity and expansion was tremendous and really surprised me. My 22 mag was a Marlin with clip feed, model now unknown. I deemed it accurate out to 100 yards for varmints. It had the infamous MarShfield finish on it I believe it was called. Aget about 2 yrs I thought I would refinish the wood but unsure what I would find. To my surprise I found, really nice quality Walnut and it looked super nice when I was finished
.22 Mag, Hornady 30 grain Vmax bullets, will violently fragment in a 1 gallon water jug. Some pieces will exit, but lack sufficient energy to penetrate a second water jug placed directly behind the first. At 150 yards, bullets perform as a FMJ and will penetrate the second water jug but stop without exiting the second jug. .22 Mag is pretty much a 125 yard gun if you're after expansion. By the time the bullet reaches 150 yards, energy is quite low and has dropped from 290 ft lbs at the muzzle to around 81 ft lbs at 150 yards using the 30 grain Vmax. No experience with the .17 HMR, so I cannot comment on that caliber.
Both of these are fun ones to use, the 22 mag did better than I thought. Maybe same shot with FMJ. Thanks again Who Tee Who gods speed to ya and your family 👍🇺🇸
A 17 grain bullet compared to a 40 grain bullet. The 40 grain bullet is almost (not quite) three times the mass. If you compared apples to apples the .17 HMR would win hands down. But, you cant find 40 grain .17HMR bullets (no such thing). I think and may be wrong but I think 20 grain HMR bullets are the heaviest they make. I have a friend who shoots deer (illegally) with a 15 grain .17HMR. He drops them dead in their tracks at 50 yards with a head shot. He says that upon examination, the deer skull is full of purple mush after beening shot in the head with a 15 grain .17HMR bullet. Great video. Thank you. John
This might tell you more and I like to do this myself ! Pull a bullet out of the 17 HMR and the .22 WMR ! Section each bullet , what you are looking for is bullet jacket thickness which explains a lot why the bullet does what it does ! Bullet performance is not totally velocity alone ! Use a standard file and you can file away enough material to get inside the bullet without pulling the bullet from the case ! I do it both ways !
From an example done by a good friend on squirrels with a 17 HMR : Don't shoot a squirrel while he is on top of a limb or in a fork of a limb 'cause that is where he will be until you or someone else pulls the squirrel of the limb or out of the fork as they die that quickly when shot with a 17 HMR and that is regardless of where the squirrel is shot, body, gut or head. Totally different with a 40 gr. .22 mag except for a head shot.
Well now that was a interesting video, and I would have never thought that the 22 magnum would have that much more mojo than the 17, but like you say that is why you do these tests.
This is exactly why I shoot the 22 mag. Penetration! Hogs, beaver, coyotes. It always works for me. It’s so much easier to shoot a rimfire at night than a centerfire. I’m not bothering anyone.
What’s funny is if you pause the video when he’s looking at the 22 mag results at the end you can see portions of the 17 hmr below on the wood. The 17 round fragmented in the first jug.
Great video!!! I don’t know if you already did it or not, but I would like to see the same comparison shooting from 125 & 150 yards. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
The 22 mag is a potent round and adequate for self defense. Biggest problem is that a rim fire bullet does not always go off. If one applies the 21' foot rule, it's a risky proposition if you have a misfire and even the 2nd round fires true, you're counting on one small caliber round to stop an assailant.
Pretty funny with the old pup. Nice looking family. That was at 100 yards, that 22mag from my experience with it and from your videos has never ceased to amaze me. Definitely in the all time best cartridges class.
I'd like to see this test done with FMJs. Most of those. 17 HMR rounds are made to fragment really early & essentially detonate on impact, so the FMJs would likely make a huge difference. .22 WMR rounds don't expand well, so they mostly act like FMJs anyway.
REMEMBER... .17HMR bullets are DESIGNED to fragment on initial impact. Some are made with frangible materials. That's why they are called 'gopher grenades'. Keep this on fact in mind when comparing to other calibers/other bullet designs. This means all the energy (Energy = Mass X Velocity(squared) ) of the .17HMR was transferred directly into the 'target', the first milk jug, whereas the energy contained in the .22WMR spread itself out through 4 jugs. Which one is more likely to get a one-shot takedown on a small animal target?
The results that were observed with the 17 HMR is exactly what I expected but with both that and the 22 mag. I certainly would not have guess 4 jugs for the 22 mag.
If you shoot the .17hmr from 300m it will pass straight through the first jug with a neat hole each side. At 100m they explode like your 100yd jug & at 200m they split wide open both sides

Never would’ve guessed that result ... crazy little round huh 22 mag
Surprised me
Thanks for the video. Two of my co-workers said their .17hmr is one of their funnest guns, since it explodes gophers with the ballistic tip.
Impressive penetration from the .22 Maximag. I think you are correct about the 17 HMR disintegrating from its hypervelocity on impact.
I'm glad a channel like this is getting private sponsorships. God knows youtube won't pay you what you deserve, great ad, way to make it fun.
Got an 11 yr old beagle. Love him alot. Our kids have grown now and left old Jake with us. Great channel
Thanks for watching Wendy!
That was awesome WTW! That 17 is moving man! Great video, thanks fir sharing brother!🤘🏽
Hey Michael!
How bad does the 17, tear the meat up? if you don't get a good head shot?
@@jackmyers6040 yeah pretty bad on the rabbits. Lots of bloodshot meat, tears and bullet fragments.
Awesome to see you spending time with your boys.
You know how you can tell a guy is "Down-To-Earth", and really cool...? He's got a Beagle. Oh...and kids.
I like to see this test with vmax vs vmax
Sweet video....I'm a 22 mag guy over the 17 myself but I sure didn't think the mag would have done that.....Now I know....I just love shooting my Uberti stallion 5.5 revolver in 22 mag.
I know this video is old but I have since tried out a bunch of different 22wmr rounds. The TNT versions are much more explosive and lower penetration. A physical comparison, the hollow point cavity is significantly larger than on "regular" hollow points. So I suspect that this also contributed to the 17hmr's lower penetration in this test whereas something like a Vmax might go deeper.
I’d definitely go .22 Mag, especially on small edible game and larger varmints.
Great video! It would be interesting to see the penetration differences between the CCI MAXI MAG 40 GR HP and the CCI 40 GR GAMEPOINT rounds!
I really appreciate the long range shooting of the smaller calibers and showing what they will do at those ranges.
Appreciate you watching Archie
I've never played with a 17 HMR, but I do like the 22 WMR. Thanks for another good lesson!!
Thanks for watching Bill
Man, I forgot all about the ammo test with the dog treats commercial. We had a red and white beagle like Junior. His name was Milo. Dang I miss that dog.
They are good dogs
Haha no joke I did too I forgot all about the shooting
I was actually right about which would go farther though I wasn't thinking it would go as far as it did
Surprised me
Both of these bullets have similar energy equations.
@@ferengiprofiteer9145
The bigger advantage is really in the environment you hunt in.
@@drewhobbs6837
Prairie dogs! I didn't think of that. I don't have that varmint.
I have coyotes, bobcat, coons, and otters for varmints.
I eat the squirrels, rabbits, beavers, and feral hogs I hunt.
Squirrels and rabbits are made for my pellet gun anyway.
Oh yes who tee who good man love videos like this, bit of rimfire action partial towards the 22mag
Bingo!
Thanks for watching!
I definitely didn't expect those results, very interesting. I would never have guessed that the 22mag would have had that much more penetration than the .17HMR. I own both so I'll keep that in mind. Nice test.
Surprised me
@@WHOTEEWHO I shoot turtles in the pond with my .17HMR, literally blows body parts into the air, very effective.
Great vid for a comparison that clearly shows the superiority of the 22 mag over the 17 HMR.
.22 Mag, Hornady 30 grain Vmax bullets, will violently fragment in a 1 gallon water jug.
Hey Joel! Appreciate you watching
Thank you. John
Oh this should be a really fun video. Going to guess 3 for the 17hmr and 2 for the 22 mag. See you tonight 👍
See you then Jesse!
Depends on wind- ammunition type and target
Them 17hmr bullets are just rippin. I have both but the wife took our the 22mag and I've always been a 17hmr guy. So equal love for both. Who-tee-who
I am a fan of them both!
You should do 17hmr and 22mag vs clay blocks at 100 yards!
Did that a week or two ago.....
Oh shoot, sorry must not have watched that one! 😂
😛😛😛
Great test. Glad to see the channel is doing well. Been here since the beginning.
Well now that was a interesting video, and I would have never thought that the 22 magnum would have that much more mojo than the 17, but like you say that is why you do these tests.
Thanks for watching David
Surprised about the .17 hmr but that 22 got it done. Great info. I still like them both.👍
This is exactly why I shoot the 22 mag. Penetration!
Hogs, beaver, coyotes. It always works for me. It’s so much easier to shoot a rimfire at night than a centerfire. I’m not bothering anyone.
Absolutely great video! 🤗👍
Thanks for watching Robbie
Gonna say velocity may make the difference but that 22 mag is a pusher too!
Hey Michael
What’s funny is if you pause the video when he’s looking at the 22 mag results at the end you can see portions of the 17 hmr below on the wood. The 17 round fragmented in the first jug.
That looks like a hollow point 17 two jugs and the 22 three 🧐🤷♂️
Both hollowpoints
WHO_TEE_WHO you have all ready made the video so how many 🙂
We keep hoping that the 17 can keep it together but nope it flies a part no penetration 😔
The .17hmr dumps its whole energy on the first 6 inches !!!
That 17 dumps its energy hard and fast. The 22 mag surprised me. Looks like you can’t go wrong with either. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
That .22 mag. was on a mission!
Pretty funny with the old pup. Nice looking family. That was at 100 yards, that 22mag from my experience with it and from your videos has never ceased to amaze me. Definitely in the all time best cartridges class.
I'd like to see this test done with FMJs.
Most of those. 17 HMR rounds are made to fragment really early & essentially detonate on impact, so the FMJs would likely make a huge difference.
.22 WMR rounds don't expand well, so they mostly act like FMJs anyway.
exactly what i was thinking the entire time, this test was almost pointless
The 17 is trash 22mag is a better caliber all day every day. Too much credit on the feather 🪶 weight 17. 22 expand and goes deeper threw
They both did what they were intended to do, with that said they’re both devastating rounds. Great video I loved it
REMEMBER... .17HMR bullets are DESIGNED to fragment on initial impact.
22 mag for the win yeah buddy! I have always been a fan of that round it is a snappy little bugger!
The difference surprised me! Thanks for watching Chris!
The results that were observed with the 17 HMR is exactly what I expected but with both that and the 22 mag. I certainly would not have guess 4 jugs for the 22 mag.
I have gained a new respect for the 22 WMR. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching 74willy!
I was way off as love the .22 mag as so underrated.....Good stuff.....
Hey Scott
If you shoot the .17hmr from 300m it will pass straight through the first jug with a neat hole each side. At 100m they explode like your 100yd jug & at 200m they split wide open both sides
