@@pablom-f8762 Yeah, I dunno if that's spoiler safe. If there's something in an early show that foreshadows stuff that happens much much later, they tend to mention it.
@@jrich749 I dunno if that's true. For example, stealth composites are mentioned in the very first episode of the show, and there may be cases where they talk about how they are later used in the show (definitely a spoiler). With y'all to the end folks, listening to your takes on the characters, the moral conundrums and the storytelling is by far the best part of your reactions. Thanks for doing what you do, keep on keeping on.
The two of you have the best analyses of this show I've seen. Your discussion of the debate is an example-- delving into Avasarala's privilege vs Gao's "up by the bootstraps" perspective. I find myself sticking around till the end of your discussions, something I almost never do.
Haha I totally stayed to the end and it was all fun. I never get tired of The Expanse discussions. Also, the writers intentionally wrote the story and characters to create moral ambiguity, so it's refreshing to hear your deep dives into the questions which often get glossed over on reactions.
First time commenter! I really do enjoy listening to your discussions at the end of each episode, it’s really a treat to get to go through the whole series and hear your insights. Couldn’t stop me from watching to the end!
Always enjoy your comments and thoughts on the show. I've seen the entire series a few times and read the books. it's nice to watch others enjoying the show and seeing different perspectives and theories. Helps me appreciate it all over again. Thank you.
I'm one that loves your back and forth banter after an episode. It's why this Texan keeps coming back to your videos at least. :3 We may not always comment, but we're enjoying the posts. Keep it up girls!
Great reaction and analysis ladies! And yes I always stay to the very end of every Expanse episode you post! I honestly cherish your content and the investment you both have in this story! Thank you!! I completely agree with both of your views on each story line this season! Also I think you two are so funny a very relatable! The talk that Naomi had with Lucia was so good! The pre-post commentary is the reason why i subscribe!! I listen to every one of these. Its almost like the times in high school and uni when I would sit with friends and argue over theories of our favourite shows and books.. Dont stop :)
The books are for sure different enough from the show to have y'all want to read from the beginning. Starting at Book 3 there are many many differences, but even from book 1 there are plenty of things that happen differently. Also, there are two authors for the books, they wrote under the collective pseudonym James SA Corey. The two individuals Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham both worked on the show from the first episode.
In search for a german The Expanse Podcast, which doesn't really exist I decided to look for reactions and there I found you 10 days ago :) now I'm doing this journey together with you
I thoroughly enjoy the humor and depth of your comments. Of course I watch them to the end!! Also, you will absolutely want to read the books. Not only do they supply more motivation and detail, but they provide the inner thoughts of the characters, adding a whole new perspective. You will end up thinking that 9 books and 9 novellas are exactly the right number to tell the story.
I always stay through the end. I love your discussions! I really appreciate all your efforts in making these videos for us. I've done a reaction series before and I know it's a lot of work. Thank you!
I listen to the "review" for every episode of The Expanse, just like I did for Avatar and Arcane! And I say the belters who destroyed the pad and killed those people got what they deserved, and if Murtry would have stopped there, then I wouldn't have much of a problem with him at all.
Murtry couldn't stop, becasue the belters retaliated and things escalated. Plus the belters he killed were planning additional viloent actions. So he is on edge, tensions are on edge. No one wants to back down. It's a recipe for disaster.
I also appreciate what the show did with Nancy Gao (compared to the books and in general), I like that she's a serious opponent with some really good arguments on her side
I prefer the book plot here. Chrisjen *never* wanted to be in charge. She was actually pissed at Errinwright *because* that situation left her in charge. In the books she arranges for Gao to be the new Secretary-General so that she (Chrisjen) can go back to working in the shadows where she can "get shit done"
I always listen to the end. You two provide some great insight to an amazing show. As for Murtry, he is a monster. He delights in the power and the killing he does. However, he also feels justified because he was sent by an earther company to occupy Ilus and take from the belters as Earth has done for years. The belters feel justified as they arrived there first and the planet just happens to be a gold mine... well Lithium mine. But the belters also ran through a blockade set up by Earth at the ring. But who told Earth to do that? They were trying to avoid "another blood-soaked gold rush" as Holden said before. Honestly, Naomi made one of the best points about this entire Wild West situation. There is lots of blame to go around.
20:47 - Evacuating to save EVERYONE and once again, Belters attack wandering guards who weren't bothering anyone and take them hostage. Not Murtry, Belters, and Murtry only starts proactively being a bad guy when everyone else keeps attacking his people. Everything he said about "I'm the bad guy?" was completely true. Belters murder 23 of his people, he's the bad guy. A group of them plot his murder and the murder of his people, he's the bad guy. Even the one guy he shot in the head was guilty, even if he didn't know if yet, but he did also threaten his life for no reason. How is it the Belters keep committing horrific crimes FIRST and are never held accountable and keep crying that THEY are the victims?
56:07 🥲 But yeah, you had already mentioned it before the main difference between them. Murtry is kinda like "what could have been" if Amos had never met Naomi and then linked up with this crew. Even his perfect reading of Murtry right after they met helps draw that comparison. While Amos is on a journey of growth that can't be easy for him, Murtry seems perfectly content and very sure of his positions.
In the books, Lucia and Basia's roles are reversed and they're the parents of Katoa (the boy who becomes the Hybrid Bobbie killed in season 3). IIRC, the daughter is from previous marriage and isn't blood related to Katoa.
From a plot point that *was* a better way to go. Having Lucia be the bomber introduces a fairly large plot hole, namely how did she go from being semi-conscious in the back of the crawler with no medical gear, to being at the crash site with medical gear and showing absolutely no signs of her earlier "injury" and being able to make that journey in time to be of assistance to the survivors?
Earth you live an average of 123 years, they dont state exactly how long, but its even better on Mars but belters live an average of of 68 years. it makes sense though, with a huge lack of a magnetosphere to protect from radiation caused by the sun, and space in general. while in the real world mars does not have much of a magnetosphere, we have already hypothesized that placing a nuclear powered cycletron at mars' lagrange point 1, the tail end of the artificial magnetic field generated would shield Mars from the sun too. This would practically be step one in Mars' plan too terraform the planet. after the first self sufficient colony was established.

Amos and one of the writers of the expanse have a podcast on youtube where the cast and people behind the expanse pop on all the time its called Ty and the Guy.
Listened to the end, always do. Sometimes when it's this long we put off watching until we actually have time to watch the whole thing, so the video length does have an effect on how enthusiastic we are to watch these reactions; in the end, though, the quality of your reactions is always worth it to get around to watching them eventually. We just put it off sometimes when it's a long one, until we're in the right headspace to watch it and enjoy that much discussion. Hope the feedback helps!
Lola and Mila. You gals are right in your perspective of things. Murtry is also 85% right and he has no one to back him up. Plus if Murtry fucks up all his people die. So both of you are right, which is what makes the show so amazing. You may not agree with the perspective of many people on this show, but you always get the chance to hear them out. BTW, I did listen to this review (I had to listen at 2x speed, but I did listen.) There are moments of dialogue that drive the development of characters in this series and I feel like this was one of them. I had to hear you gals' breakdown of it.
season 6 is only 6 MAIN episodes, but each episode has a related Mini episode hidden in the "X-ray-->bonus content" part of each episode that focus' on just 1 or 2 characters. DONT for get this please. they are excellent little side stories that give extra depth too your favorite characters.
Nah, you have Murtry right. Amos will kill someone if it's the practical thing to do and sleep well that night. he doesn't want to kill people, but he doesn't really care about it either. Murtry pretends to be like Amos, but he's a bully. he has the power and he knows it, so he pushes until he can wield that power like a club, and start killing people under the excuse of fighting back, or justice. He's just calm enough that he can make it look dispassionate, but he loves the idea of having the power of life or death over these people. I think given time, Murtry is the sort of guy who ends up as a brutal warlord, like Immortan Joe in Mad Max. I listened to the end! I love hearing your thoughts on the shows I enjoy.
On the other hand... if you read the books you'll get to revisit Amos, Bobbie, Christjen, Miller, Alex, Naomi, Holden, and all the rest for the first time... and there are differences, but that just makes it better.. it's like.. more stories...
Your discussions are so interesting, honestly you should do an audio podcast. Y’all have different points of view, and have civilized and smart!! discussions. So glad to have found you. Oh, I watch always until the end. And no 5s reviews!
Yeah Holden has the supernatural ability to stumble in all the deepest shit in the universe and somehow stagger out in the best way possible every time due to his insane idealism and faith in humanity, making him very dependable to save the day =D 13:45
Its important to realise this season is like the wild west, people need to govern and police themselves locally. Walking around the camp with guns is totally justified when its obvious the local leaders haven't been able to stop a terrorist attack. Likewise, telling some earth corps who thinks they are in charge of you to f off, if you have the power to stop them from intervening is totally okay, protecting your life and liberty. IIRC earth is at least a 6 month journey home in the books, every stage of the show these long expanses of time spent moving between places isn't really conveyed even from season 1. The courts and trials that go on on Earth are not capable of effecting any justice in your new home because of the distance which really does offer some similarities of the wild west.
Watched to the end and I was one of the ones who lectured you early about not seeing the characters in such black and white ways in the early episodes and I see you understand now that even the worst characters on the Expanse have identifiable motivation for doing what they do. Now their choices can be criticized but the writers really do give characters depth and very few are all bad (although there are some). I think what makes Murtry different than Amos is that Murtry kills and takes pleasure from it while Amos uses killing as a way to solve a problem and doesn't do it just for the joy of it. Amos is neither cruel nor vindictive... he is pragmatic but the issue with Amos is he doesn't value human life in the same way most people do so it has no impact on his decision-making.
Really good post episode discussion, you make a lot of great points. We're all happy that we're not in Chrisjen's position of making those decisions, when it rains, it pours. It's great that we're getting a lot more of Naomi's backstory.
That conversation on character longevity in the novels at the beginning 😬 Also, it's perfectly fine to read books 7-9 once you finish the series. You don't HAVE TO start at the beginning. You'll have no trouble understanding what's going on. I also watched until the end. How could you not? 👀
but alot of characters dont exist on the show, drummer is a mash up of several characters. to name one example. some elements will be missing jumping into the later books. the tv show does well enough translating too the small screen, but it does come at a cost.
Definitely agree with you guys on Murtry and so-on. At least 90%. I think the central problem is that Murtry is just a security guy who got promoted by the people who attacked them into also being the camp leader. So basically a defacto warlord who thinks they have legitimacy. The real question I have is why was Murtry the second in command and also on the shuttle with the captain? Where's the XO? They should have been handling the ship and simply taken over as head of the RCE mission and ship after the captain was killed, and have them telling Murtry what to do. The whole setup of this project makes no real sense other than it creates plot drama. Any realistic operation should have had a lot more red tape and overwatch especially being it's this remote mission far away. You'd think they would have a small fleet supporting this operation, not one ship with like 20 scientists and 40 people with guns.
It's actually 9 novels, 5 novellas, and 2 short stories. All of the novellas and short stories are available in a single volume titled "Memory's Legion." The novellas you guys would be most interested in are "God's of Risk" which is the Boby storyline they adapted into this season, and "The Churn" which is Amos's dark backstory. Given the extremely limited access to medical professionals in space, I would assume just about everyone has certain emergency training, especially active and former military, like Alex. The character is clearly also a born nurturer. Cast and crew pretty much unanimously agreed that Cas Anvar, Alex, was most like his character in real life, and Cara Gee, Drummer, the least like hers. Screw Morty. No matter what happened first, he's a security consultant who made himself judge, jury, and executioner. He deserves whatever James might let Amos do to him. Those who make the Amos/Murty comparison probably don't get nuance. ✌️
I love Morty. He's such a great antagonist. To me it always seemed like he didnt actually believe he was in the right, he just acted like it. We see later when he has that 1 on 1 with Wei that he is 100% motivated by greed. He wants this planet ful of wealth for himself but he knows how to frame it like he was justified in doing the things he did.
"very cute"? holden is SMOKING. lol. you two, otoh, are very cute.❣️ great reactions. if i'm not watching your reactions, then i'm looking forward to them. great job!
The question of how long people live on Earth was answered in season 1 by the Ceres coroner. 126 years. Even longer on Mars. On Ceres it's 67. Mind you, Crisjen's current circumstances are hardly ideal. Way too much stress, given what she does for a living.
There is a good plot reason for the 30 year jump. You'll need to read to find out. That being said, You two should totally read all the books. You can do a little synopsis and reaction every few chapter or something. The last 3 books are crazy! (and don't forget the short stories!)
You can totally read books 7-9 1-6 are great and I'd advise anyone with time for all 9 to read all of them, but watching the show gives you everything you need to jump in at 7. You can infer from context everything that's different. Of course I also really hope someone gives them the money to adapt 7-9, the writers have said that the time jump wasn't the main issue, Amazon cutting funding was.
Start the books from 7 and go to 9.5 after you finish the show if the show runners decide not to adapt the last 3.5 books. Why deprive yourselves from knowing the conclusion of the saga? Afterwards you can start from the beginning. Also, looks like Shed is a distant memory for the dynamic LM duo.
Yes, there are two writers of the books. Authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck wrote the novels under the pen name of James S. A. Corey. The original authors are also on the screenwriting team. They've said that they consider the series a final draft of the story, and they've made changes both for the medium and to improve the story. I think the series does better with characters than the novels. Avasarala doesn't even appear in the first book. Naomi and Elvie are both much, much better characters in the series. Drummer in the series is a composite of two characters, making her a much better rounded and more interesting character. Ashford is also a much, much better character in the series. Mutry wants to pretend that there is no history between Belters and Inners and that the matter on Illus started from a neutral position, even though he himself has been a major player in that history. "There is a path from where you are to where I am." One of my three or four favorite lines in The Expanse. I'm glad you ladies are enjoying this season. Most fans consider book four the weakest of the books, and season four the weakest of the seasons. But if you're really enjoying this season, then seasons five and six will rock your socks.
"James S. A. Corey" is a fake name, a pen name used by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, which wrote The Expanse together. And on "common" names, James (Holden), Alex (Kamal), Julie (Mao), Joe Miller and Fred Johnson are pretty common...and it just wouldn't add much to have major characters with the same name. On Murtry vs Amos, the people Amos kills always seem to serve it (and to some extent that may just be the writers being nicer to him as in Season 1 he was ready to kill Holden more than once), whereas Murtry is ready to kill regardless of whether the victims deserve it. Amos in his current portal in Season 4 doesn't want to kill anyone who isn't a real threat to him or "his people" whereas Murtry is turning a ship into a bomb specifically to kill anyone on or near that ship, without knowing who that will be. I think the writers are trying to draw distinctions between them...and Murtry is who Amos might have been if he never met Holden. (And, yes, I made it to the very end.)
Unemployment exists to enable profit on the exploitation of labour. Governments consult with business associations to decide on the percentage they will keep unemployment above. They need unemployed people so that those with jobs will live in fear and avoid demanding fair pay. If there was full employment again, it would create a sellers' market for workers, where companies would have to compete to hire them, rather than the other way around. It would also empower the working class as a whole, as well as allow them to be better fed, clothed and housed, better rested, better self-educated and more creative with stronger relationships, families and communities. Pop music would be good again, because of the creativity of working class kids that would be unleashed by the simple fact of having enough free time to learn how to play for fun. All of that would give workers confidence and a sense of their collective power, and start tilting the political system in their favour and against the wealthy. Business owners can't have that, even though full employment also means a booming aconomy with high market demand and brisk sales, and higher total profits, especially for small businesses. But those with power are more motivated by power than greed or mathematical rationality, and infinitely more than by morality. Thus the vast majority on Earth are kept jobless on Basic Assistance, so that the rich stay the powerful. The thing with Murtry and the settlers is that it's about abuse of legal authority to dispossess the peasants. They are trying to repeat the enclosure of the commons, the process that swept over Europe from England and Holland outwards, whereby peasants were driven off the land, lost their land rights and had to go to the cities and become proletarianised. Tolstoy wrote about when this was happening in late 19th century Russia, in The Kingdom of God is Within You. Always legal authority was abused to break the previous law, snatch the land, drive out the people, with bloodshed, and then change the law to make the new property title legal. That's what the company team have been sent by Earth to do, and Murtry's doing it. They didn't expect the Belter settlers to be there, but it's the same process on auto-pilot, to expropriate the inhabitants so the land (and mineral rights) can be appropriated by the Earth corporation with the political connections. Murtry's just the landlord's thug, his paid-off Guardia Civil.
Also, Ashford is an asshole in the books. Straight up asshole. But they got an amazing actor for the show so they combined a few traits from a few belters and made him a nuanced character that wanted to do the best in his circumstances... and then.. the relation between him and Drummer this season is so satisfying....you still have Expanse to chew on for a while is what I'm saying... love you guys.
I understand why this season is least favorit for many people. I guess the reason would be because this season dosen't have a lot of space action while pretty much every other season would have the roci or other ships going to places and shooting or doing whatever. I like this season because it does the slow setup of many story lines which will come in the further seasons.
Ladies, if you ever get the time, just watch the first 2 episodes of an hbo show called "Raised By Wolves." If you can Ep 1 - 3. There is absolutely nothing like it anywhere...

Agreed, but to be pedantic there's only 5 bonus episodes to the 6 main ones
49:28 so did Amos had that right during "I am that guy" scene?
Season 4 is awesome, and it only gets better on rewatch
I'm one of the 50! I always stick around to the end, love your discussion.
"Oh my sweet summer child."
Your discussions are so interesting, honestly you should do an audio podcast. Y’all have different points of view, and have civilized and smart!! discussions. So glad to have found you.
Oh, I watch always until the end. And no 5s reviews!
I always stay till the end you two are great.
4:31 Bobby wasnt in season 1 either, of the show. 4:39 something better is coming for you girls, down the road.
You may or may not like Murty, but you can't argue that he's great at promoting a discussion. Yeah i stayed until the end.
That conversation on character longevity in the novels at the beginning 😬
Also, it's perfectly fine to read books 7-9 once you finish the series.
✌️
"Cast and crew pretty much unanimously agreed that Cas Anvar, Alex, was most like his character in real life."
And we all know how that turned out.
@@89Joe08 yeah, well I wasn't gonna bring that up at this point in thebseries. Not time yet.
"very cute"? holden is SMOKING. lol. you two, otoh, are very cute.❣️ great reactions. if i'm not watching your reactions, then i'm looking forward to them. great job!
late to this party, but too be fair, murtury DID have legal authority on illus as the RCE had a charter from the UN to explore and exploit the system.
Having read all the books, your "who is most likely to die" commentary at the beginning was 👀
Oh he’s witHolden information, all right.
Always listen to the very end!! 🤘
Bobbie Draper! Like a fucking valkyrie!
(and don't forget the short stories!)
am i getting old and deaf or is the audio (show and after) getting lower...
What do I get for listening to the end?
You can totally read books 7-9
1-6 are great and I'd advise anyone with time for all 9 to read all of them, but watching the show gives you everything you need to jump in at 7. You can infer from context everything that's different.
Of course I also really hope someone gives them the money to adapt 7-9, the writers have said that the time jump wasn't the main issue, Amazon cutting funding was.
2:53 It's a they in the plural sense, there are two authors.
I always watch until the end (ok, often 1.5x speed but I hear every word). It didn’t occur to me that anyone wouldn’t.
LOL i forgot his name, too and had too google who the character was.
Soon it begins. 👌😁
❤
When it rains, it pours.
I’m with you ‘till the end of the line
Listened to the end 👍
Interesting this "Bobbie love". She is on my top 9 but nice that she fans. Timothy is quite great, yes. Camina might be the number 1🤔
I understand why this season is least favorit for many people. I guess the reason would be because this season dosen't have a lot of space action while pretty much every other season would have the roci or other ships going to places and shooting or doing whatever. I like this season because it does the slow setup of many story lines which will come in the further seasons.
Even if Lucia didn't want that to happen to the folks on that ship, she was still a party to it nonetheless. Those deaths are still on her hands.
Yeah it would be hard to tell people that are desperate that space is dangerous when they are dying on Earth.
Fiddy ✌ love the discussions
Dobar vece. Listened to the end. Enjoyable, as always, to hear what you think.
All the way to the end. :)
Well there are two Chandras in this show :D
I *usually* listen to the end if your comments. Does that count? 😁
Ladies, if you ever get the time, just watch the first 2 episodes of an hbo show called "Raised By Wolves." If you can Ep 1 - 3. There is absolutely nothing like it anywhere...
Y'all are so right about youtube comments justifying Murtry's actions LOL. I appreciate your perspective and discussions and look forward to the reactions to come!!
I've never seen a single one.
I listened to the very end. 🙂
1300 new solar systems...wow..
Wow, you are the first people who like the new Arjun I have ever seen. I thought the original was far and away better.
