The main issue with giving Fred the protomolecule and why people might be against it is the fact that the Belter factions have clearly demonstrated that a "balance of power" is not necessarily on the agenda for the average Belter. If not for the Roci crew, Fred would have lost the nuclear missiles and that faction would have used them against Earth, most likely starting another war.
Lots of belters also still consider Fred and Earther. They wouldn't hesitate to kill him to get to the protomolecule. We already saw a faction willing to kill him over nukes and the protomolecule would give them way more of an advantage than a few nukes.
I wouldn't say the "average" Belter, but SOME Belters. Also...all of the Martians and Earthers can be trusted with it??? Mars and earth are literally on the cusp of starting a war. Just sayin.
Good lord this show. Watching this show again with you two has been magical. And has made me realize I was wrong that this is a top ten alltime show. This is the #1 greatest show ever made
the first thing I said to my wife after the hybrid grabbed the nuclear core was "My Precious". Reminded me of Gollum jumping for the ring in ROTK.. Both were obsessed and oblivious to their own demise. The scene on Ganymede when Bobby first encountered the hybrid looming over her ends with the drone flashing and a bright light. That was the destruct device going off, the same type that the hybrid pulled out of its body.
Re: My precious. At least Prax didn't need to get his finger bitten off. Re: The flashing light. The grenade they tossed into the room, that Amos tossed back, was a spare self-destruct device. Since the protomolecule communicates with other pieces of itself, the current hybrid was able to learn from the other that the flashing light thing was dangerous, and needed to be gotten rid of.
His name is Dr. Lawrence Strickland. Note: Cortazar and the other researchers with Dr. Dresden in season 1 had that magnetic procedure to kill their empathy, but not Dr. Strickland. He's just a sadistic psychopath. I will reiterate, if you want to know more about Amos, you should read, or listen to, The Expanse novella "The Churn." You'll meet Lydia and Timmy, the two most important people in Amos' life before his Rocinante fam, and what led him to the expanse of space. The book was released between books 3 & 4, but I recommend reading it between seasons 4 & 5, as a few elements from the story resurface in season 5.
"this seems easy". Bobby is Force Recon. similar to Navy Seals, Green Barret, Special Forces, ect. Mau's people are private security, practically shopping mall guards. Bobby has had the best combat training in the solar system. Easy? yeah, it was. 😲
Yep, in the books it's made clear that even Amos can't really win a fight against her even if he is stronger, because she just REALLY knows how to fight. I think he says to Holden once "I'm a very good amateur , she is a Pro, we are not in the same league".
Great reaction and analysis ladies! I truly love your Expanse reactions! And your discussions after is so awesome! I love this show! Can't wait for season three!
quick call back, when the Hybrid rips the bomb out of its chest this makes clear what happened to the first Hybrid that attacked Bobby. The hints about its origins were in the very last few seconds of that episode. if you recall, Bobby looked up and saw it standing over her, with the drone in the back ground, the drone flashes a red light then a flare of blue light expands from the hybrid and Bobby rolls to the side blinded. this indicates whomever manned the drone was monitoring it and initiated the fail safe.
I love this show so much, I just teared up during Naomi's speech to Holden. It's all so good. I'm putting season 3 on right now. Too much hype even after having seen it so many times. So so so hyped you're on S3. The first episodes of this season are my favourite of the whole show!
earth doesn't technically have it. mao has it, same with mars. technically right now, only mao and fred have the protomolecule. also, the belters see only blood right now. there is no proper leadership like avasarala for the belt. some one who is cool headed, calm and smart. the only person close to that is fred. and fred is still considered an earther by almost 99% of the belt. if anyone else finds out about the protomolecule, they will kill fred for it and once that happens, shit's going to go all fucked up. u know the belters are going to use it to lay waste to both earth and mars. and at that point it would be too wide spread to contain and will take over our solar system with no where for the belters to run or hide. the belt as it is is too short sighted to see this. all they see right now is blood. yea the belters are shown as the underdogs so we can sympathize with them. but they also can not handle the power of the protomolecule.
You ladies have such great discussions. A good discussion is one that makes fans burst to spoil. If you recall, Cotyar was late getting to the skiff with Avasarala and Bobbie. He said he was putting on the luggage...that was Bobbie's power armor. A good spy plans ahead. The reason Bobbie was able to beat those two goons of Mao was because she's a trained Recon Marine and they're just hired security guards who have been too long on a cushy job. I don't think Avasarala truly trusted Bobbie until Bobbie held out that armored hand to her. The Protomolecule hybrid on the Roci knew to dig the bomb out of its chest. If you recall, there was a failsafe bomb in the chest of the hybrid that attacked Bobbie's team. So how did this one know it had a bomb in its chest? When Strickland's hench-scientist was dying, she said about the Protomolecule hybrid, "We made it in our own image" and "there are a lot more where she came from." So the Protomolecule hybrid that was on the Roci was definitely derived from a human girl. Prax may have wanted to see if there was any humanity left in the hybrid, but it was also necessary for him to hold the warhead as long as possible so that the hybrid thought it was in reach and would leap for it. If he'd thrown the warhead too soon, the hybrid would have just gone back to the reactor. BTW, that loose warhead they had on the Roci was the one they had removed from the torpedo they hid the Protomolecule in. If you recall, just as the Somnambulist was lifting from Ganymede and the Martians were threatening to shoot them, they showed Naomi looking at the hidden Protomolecule torpedo on her screen. That was when she was transmitting the coordinates to Fred Johnson. If Holden had been paying attention to Naomi all along, he'd know she still had strong allegiance to the Belt. It was interesting that she gave the Protomolecule to Fred Johnson instead of Dawes. Yes, she did start trusting Johnson more, and I think it was Drummer's faith in Johnson that swayed Naomi. Naomi and Drummer made a connection between themselves. Although the last scene of the episode gave you all the information necessary to know where Strickland is with Mei, I won't tell you.
"The day I kill you will be a great day." This show is great at surprising things about characters. Random deaths, rehabilitations, surprising motivations, betrayals. Lots of things can happen to this doctor. But I think you should save a clip of you saying the above quote. I won't say why - it might be to cheer or take it back or whatever - but I think it will be useful in some episode(s) in the next four seasons.
Huge letdown. I wouldn´t recommend them wasting time watching that. Apart from Lee Pace and Jared Harris, good production design, and the Empire storyline, it has really bad acting, poor directing, and lousy/dumb writing. On it´s own, even if it had another name, it´s bad. But being named Foundation, for anyone who has read anything from Asimov, and specially the Foundation books, it´s reaaaally bad. Still, not "Star Trek Picard" bad.... :P Just proves (to Apple) that pouring loads of money on something doesn´t make it good. To think that The Expanse lost Jared Harris to that!! :(
As you watch the rest of this series, PLEASE pay attention to ALL the consequences of Naomi’s decision to give the protomolecule to Fred Johnson/ Belters.
People in this universe are strongly motivated to get a job, especially a high paying job, because there are so few jobs on earth. They've got the "reserve army of labour" of a whole planet. Billions of people are jobless and homeless. So those goons are working for Mao because of course they are. They have to. Maybe they couldn't have got better jobs in the Earth Navy, or maybe not. Mao is going to pay better and have lower standards. They're trapped. They can't just quit because they need an excellent reference to get another job, and anything else they could get would pay less.
Work for worst man alive once work for the worst woman. Why she paid me lots . . . Actually no second worse x-wife beats her because she spent the money I earned.
Fun fact: the actor who did the motion-capture for the protomolecule hybrid was Elias Toufexis, the same actor who played Kenzo in S1.
13:48 the way they look at Amos, also 7:30 the way Lola looks at Amos... Priceless.

@@michaelthorsen1478 Wow, never made that connection with the "grenade". Another example of how tight and consistent the Expanse is.
