  • Woodturning - In this video I combine maple burl with leftover globes from previous pours and some fantastic Black tinted epoxy from Designer Epoxy to make this beautiful galaxy inspired hollow form. In this video I also use a UV Resin as a top coat finish but things don't go as planned! Thanks for watching and please share with your friends.

A wonderful example of no waste working by using globes made with extra resin AND a fantastic finished product that was greater than the sum of it's parts! Thank you for sharing the struggle with the finish as well. I learn SO MUCH!

Oooooooo! The way the planets glow in the black when lit from inside is enchanting. I think that this is one of those pieces that I would light from within in the evening and I would keep it on a rotating stand because it is just that visually interesting. Yes you should do more with this concept.👍

Oh, oh, oh my gosh!!! This is beyond cool!! We got Van Gogh and Klimt circles. You just keep giving me a new favorite Jim. I have an idea. Would you consider using the globe cast to make paper weights and or balls for display in a container of some kind. I see a wire basket with colorful hypershift balls in it. It would use leftover product AND be something you could sell for a reasonable amount of money for us poor people out here. I would purchase and be tickled pink to have something that you created!!!

What I like best about this piece is the distinct difference between the types of colors you have used. The pearl colors are clearly different from the hypershift which are different from the non-pearl, non-hypershift colors. I am actually enjoying the the less obvious mixed colors in the orbs, in particular the blue and green orbs.

All the colors in the black and gold waterfalls, it's reminiscent of the old pulp illustrations of space scapes a la Flash Gordon and it is just amazeballs!!! All the little planetoids and the larger gas giants, you've even got some terrestrial style planets, and the burl gives the impression that you're looking out on this vast galaxy from the surface of an asteroid and just holy cow, I cant say enough good things about how phenomenal this hollow form is!!!

Regarding the pits caused by the air bubbles in the planets... that's actually pretty realistic! Most space bodies have craters on them!
Also, space pieces have always been one of my favorite types of pieces, and this one did not disappoint. The hypershift was definitely the right choice for this piece! I also like how you can subtly see some of the smaller planets that didn't quite make it through during the shaping.

This is a very beautiful hollow form and i think a series of the globes in different shapes would be great when you asked what we thought about what we would like to see my mind went to a lava lamp shaped vase

That piece turned out great. It is a great use of extra or leftover epoxy, so it does not go to waste. You inspire me each week. Great job. Have a great weekend. Designer Epoxy

My suggestion for any advice on UV resin is David (DANIEL, not David!) Cooper. He experiments a lot with UV resin. On small jewelry size pieces. Would go broke otherwise. Does things never done before. He topcoats with UV resin a lot. He’s always asking for questions and comments, loves looking for answers. Also works with Epoxy.
Beautiful piece. But frustrations can be irritating.😠
Area we are moving to (north of here and south of you) is expecting 18” of snow tonight and tomorrow. HAPPY SPRING!😂

Live and learn, if you don't ask questions how are you going to learn, experimenting will make you better, and obviously Jim is one of the best. Beautiful Vase Jim.

Designer epoxy - I love how well you teach. This project has to many bright colors for me. I like more subdued stuff. You definitely have the gift of teacher.

The way that epoxy flowed around the globes makes me think of Picasso’s “The Scream” painting

Wow! I love the hypershift and the way it swirls around the planets. Your combination of wood with the epoxy and planets in differing colors is just amazing.

First, wow. I was thinking it was a Starwars lovers dream, then you said it, and it made me giggle. Those dark globes look like Dark matter or Black holes, ooo you should do a couple of flat black globes so then the black pearl hypershift flows around it!
Second, keep doing what makes you happy, experiment with everything! Can't wait to see what you do next!
Third, I wanted to know how you care for your silicone brush. Thank you.

Another beautiful creation, Jim. This piece makes me feel like I’m standing on an alien planet looking at a sky filled with moons and swirling clouds of space dust. I’m excited to see what you come up with for a lamp.
