  • In this video, I will show you 4 simple proven methods that I use to root figs or any fruit tree for that matter! I root thousands of cuttings every year this way and you can too! I don't like spending money to make money if I don't have to so these methods are for frugal people just like me! Even on a large scale, these methods cost next to nothing. if you do use these methods to root a lot of cuttings keep in mind when you get to the potting up phase it's going to take a lot of pots, soil, and space! for pots you can check out my how to make grow bags video to save some money making your own pots for pennies.

    Hello. This is one of the best videos I have seen on fig cuttings! I have failed each time I tried. Can you please provide your website so I can shop? I am looking for an Italian 258 fig tree and a pakastani white mulberry tree.

    I did maybe 10 fig cuttings last winter, I kept maybe 7 inside, kept them on a heat mat and kept them moist, and the other 3 I kinda just put in a pot outside and neglected, the ones inside grew the fasted and did the best early on, but one of the neglected outside ones I decided to keep, while it started off slow, the other kind of slowed down over the spring and summer but it kept going, it's now one of my strongest ones. I kept 3 of them and gave 1 away, so I have the original neglected one and another strong one left.

      It's funny you say that. I've noticed most people kill their plants with kindness☠️.
      And yes growing them slowly usually results in a much better plant or tree. I've started cuttings all different times of the year and winter just works best for me less work and they don't dry out fast, sure they take 2 to 4 times longer to get going but the roots get a chance to grow before the tops so they are usually very well rooted out before they get potted.

      @Edibles And Exotics I've got a couple going at the moment (not figs, one's some sort of plum tree and the other is just one I thought looked cool lol) but I dunno how they're gonna go as it's the middle of summer here and they weren't dormant. I like experimenting with it though

      As long as you make sure the tops don't dry out they should root no problem. When I do cuttings I keep them short and bury about two-thirds of the cutting. Summer time they root out pretty fast if they don't dry out or get bottom rot. Where are you in the backward-spinning toilet water hemisphere?

    • @AyZeD
      @AyZeD Рік тому

      @Edibles And Exotics they're pretty skinny, twiggy sticks lol but we'll see how they go, usually mine rot rather than dry out, I think I over water them so I need to watch that.
      I'm in Australia by the way lol.

      In summer I get rot quite often. What are you rooting them in? Corse Perlite works good in summer, it's got a ton of air pockets to keep the rot down to a minimum.

      @@edibles_and_exotics Thank you. I'm new to growing figs. I'm hoping to try to take cuttings and see if I can get them to root. I'm in zone 6 and not sure when I should take a cutting. I have the tree in my garage which is about 38 degrees .

    • @edibles_and_exotics
      @edibles_and_exotics  Рік тому +1

      @Thomas Iadarola now would be a great time because the tree is dormant and will have less sap flowing so it should heal real quickly and not damage the parent plant. I grew up on the border of NY and NJ and had figs there and that's when I did cuttings on them. If you are interested in growing in ground out doors there are some varities that are hardy there. You are in usda zone 5 or 6? With my figs I would heavily mulch the tree in fall around the first frost when the free has no leaves then I would wrap the tree in a blanket and then fill it with all my dead leaves from the yard and pack it in tightly then cover the whole thing in a tarp to keep out the rain and snow. Come spring after frost I would un cover it and watch it come back to life! One thing that's an issue with figs in that usda zone is the short grow season. They must be planted in full year round sun there and you need to find varities that will fruit in your grow season. Some warmer varieties need at least 6 months of warmth which you probably don't have.
      You can try my methods I'm sure you will have secuss. You could also try grafting onto your tree after taking a cutting so you have more than one varity growing on your tree so you don't have a clipped branch on your tree after taking the cutting.
      What varity do you have growing right now?

      @@edibles_and_exotics Not sure what kind of tree I have. I bought it 3 years ago and this summer I got about 10 very good figs. @Thomas Iadarola sounds great! Thanks again for being a viewer! I'll definitely post a video in the spring on what figs I have available. Right now I have some dormant black mission, brown turkey, white italian, and Brunswick. Brunswick being my absolute favorite varity. Thomas Jefferson grew them at Monticello in Virginia so they will probably grow in your zone out doors ill look into it. I think brown turkey will too. Brunswick is a super sweet white fig and brown turkey is a black purple fig and less sweet more berry taste.

    how old is that papaya tree btw?

    • @edibles_and_exotics
      @edibles_and_exotics  Рік тому

      They were started from seed from a Walmart papaya in May of 2021. Papayas grow great here in mesa.i have about 50 growing right now the one in the video is a transplant from a papaya grove behind the house so it's still kind of small. I should have planted my papaya grove 3 feet apart for more fruit production but I still get fruit about 10 inches long and super sweet! The ones in the grove are about 15 feet and have 10 inch thick trunks. I mostly planted them for shade so they are doing their job. 😊
      If you are interested in growing papayas I would recommend just growing them from seed you could start a plantation from just one store bought papaya.
      If you would like I can do a video on how to grow them just let me know?
