Thank you very much! I appreciate the compliment, comment and watching. If you like figs, they’re bloody addictive to grow, there is a cool guy in your neck of the woods called Ross Raddi. Lots of good info. Ross the fig boss. His self title. Cheers. Bobby.

well done.I took some cuttings a few days ago from my Desert King. First time doing anything like this. So...I watched a Fig grower guy yesterday on youtube and he just wrapped the bottom one third of the cuttings in wet paper towel, put them into a ziplock and then into a covered tote and then into a closet with a lightbulb on to keep it around 70 degrees in there. He said do it for 2 weeks and theylle root. I wonder if I made a mistake. I dont want them to rot.

Hi. Thanks much for watching and commenting. Yes. That will fast root them, the challenge is many times when you put them into soil they meet and un timely death. Faster is not better and figs are very resilient trees. Heck they have been around for 10,000 years. BUT, in the beginning slow and steady wins the race. 😀let me know how it goes. Cheers from Southern California. Ps. What zone are you in?

Thankyou for that. I removed the paper towels at the bottom of the cuttings. Now they are just sitting on the paper towels...unsure how to proceed. Maybe melt a tea light and wax the tips, maybe put the cuttings in a tree pot with an inch of sand on the bottom...and the rest of the soil PRO-MIX HP? Tell me what you would do. Thankyou.

@@mssavedin92well. If it is a nice cutting, I would wash it thoroughly in warm soapy water. Then soak it for 3-5 minutes in a mixture of 3 parts water to 1 part hydrogen peroxide. If you don’t have that, then I would use 9 parts water to 1 part bleach like 9 oz water 1 oz bleach. Then Rinse again in just warm water. Let it air dry completely. Then, I am considering your cutting is nice and the cut end is good, dip the cut end in root growth hormone if you have it. If you have a tree pot great if not use a 1 gallon. Fill with a good draining medium like promix hp if you don’t have that, look for sunshine at Lowe’s which seems like promix hp. Water the potting mix in really good, let it drain until it stops dripping, if you have grafting tape or para film (basically wax in roll form) wrap the top 1/4-1/3 of the cutting. If you don’t, you can dip the end of the cutting in melted candle wax. Then, push the cutting in until it hits the bottom THEN, slowly back it out 3/4 of an inch or so. You can pre measure this if you’re not used to doing this simply by holding your cutting against the side of you container about 3/4 of an inch above the bottom. With a pen, mark the top of your container on the cutting then you know the top 1/4-1/3. Then stick her in and stop at the line you used to mark the top of the pot. Wait to water again until the medium is almost dry at the very bottom of the pot. Just hold it up and look. Sometimes I let it dry but check them before bed and when I wake up. When it needs water, put an inch of water in a bucket, place your cutting pot in that and let it sit for about 1-2 minutes. If the medium is dry it will wick the water up. Try now to let it get past the 1/3 of the pot mark from the bottom up. Do this until you get a decent sized leaf going maybe 3” across and then you can water from the top. Do not soak it. Let it almost dry out again and repeat. If you see any yellow in the leaf and you’re watering correctly it needs some food. Compost the top or dilute some liquid fertilizer if you use that. I like compost. That’s what mother nature uses and seems to work great. Feel the sides of your 1 gallon pot and if it gets tight it’s time to up pot. A one gallon should do for a good 8-10 months once you see the leaves. They love heat and sun. Once they get a nice leaf structure going on and out on some height they can take more water but remember they are arid environment plants by nature. Hope this helps and keep me posted. Let me know if anything here is confusing. Cheers. Bobby

Hi. I made a mistake on this video and feel like a dummy. Figs always grow above the leaf. I know that. You know that, we know that. Like my old math teacher used to say in 5th grade. “I got my tongue over my eye tooth and couldn’t see what I was saying”. Mr Fry!
    Sorry folks. BG

Thank you very much for your informative videos , I was wondering which type of pro-mix hp is more suitable for growing fig cuttings hp pulse wich contains bio- fungicide or regular hp?
Also I was wondering if you sale any of your cuttings on figbid site?
    Thanks

Hello. I have only used standard HP and you really would not need the fungicide because that would be more suitable to things that require more water. I would get regular HP. Rinse your cuttings in warm to hot soapy water then. 3 to 1 hydrogen peroxide mixture 3 parts water to 1 part Hydrogen peroxide. Then rinse again and air dry. Let scab over a day or so, wrap the growth end in parafilm, stick the cut end in rooting hormone and plant it in a pot filled with HP you have watered in really well. Then let it almost dry out on the bottom. Look through the holes in the bottom of pot. Then place the pot in a bucket with about 2 inches of water for a few minutes and it will wick up the water. Don’t let it get wet all the way to the surface. Aim for halfway. Hope this helps. Pa. If you’re worried about fungus or mold. But powdered rooting hormone and mix some in honey and apply to the cut end that goes into the soil. Honey is a fantastic, natural antiseptic and fungicide. That is why honey never goes bad 😀

Can you provide the link to your video on how you clean & sterilize cuttings? I could not find it. Thanks so much for the info.

I have to apologize. I’m sorry. I just saw this and for some reason missed your comment. Here is a link showing the process. Simple and easy. 1- make sure your shears are clean and you can sterilize with open flame(lighter) or 9-1 water to bleach or 3-1 water to hydrogen peroxide. . I prefer 9 parts hot water to 1 part bleach but will use 3 parts hot water to 1 part hydrogen peroxide if I don’t have bleach. BUT. I prefer using 9 parts hot water to 1 part bleach AND HAVE MUCH BETTER RESULTS. To sterilize the cuttings. Rinse and scrub them with your hands with hot water. Wear kitchen gloves. Then soak them in either of the two sterilization solutions above. Ie. 4-1/2 cups hot water to 1/2 cup bleach. Or 3 cups hot water to 1 cup HP. Let them sit for 3-4 minutes. Then rinse them again with hot water to remove sterilization solution and place them on a drying rack (the ones for baked goods works great) until dry. If you want to root immediately, and they’re fresh cuttings, let them scab over a few days. If you’ve been storing them the fridge make a fresh cut at root end and let them scab over a bit. If you’re going to store them just repeat this process when you’re going to root them. In the video I used HP as I was out of bleach!! Bleach is best and cheaper and better results. Sorry for the delay and thanks for watching and commenting. Bobby!! Ps. What zone are you in?? What fig varieties do you have?? Have a great day. RARE FIG CUTTINGS FOR FREE!

Hi, In regards to watering, after planting and the initial watering when the plants need watering do you bottom watering ( soak the pots and drain) or just watering them conventionally ? If you watering them by soaking the bottom of the pots how long do you keep them in the water .
    Thank you very much

Hi. Sorry for the delay. I missed a few comments this last week. U always bottom water the figs until they really leaf out with some 3-4” leaves and I can feel the hard lump in the tree pot which is the root mass. I let them sit in about 2-3” of water for about 3 minutes but it’s best to go by the weight of the pot. Once it feels heavy on the bottom 3rd you’re good to go. Once I up pot them I water from the top but let them almost completely dry out before watering again. Once you get the hang of it you go completely off of the weight of the pot not the time between watering.
