All that squeezing looks like hard work, especially if you’ve got a lot of cuttings to root. I started soaking the pro-mix in a tub full of water then squeezing the hell out of it using an antique fruit press. My first time rooting cuttings this winter and looked at many different videos and decided yours is the one for me. Your videos contain a lot of helpful information.
When do you start this (zone 7B? What temperature is it stored? Can it be kept in a heated basement out of direct sunlight? When do you take the bag off?
I love your videos. I was wondering if there was a way I could send you a picture of an inground Fig Tree that has gotten out of control, and I wanted to recommendation as to how to prune it, and if there was a way to save some of the big trunks in the middleor propagate them
Great instructions. Thanks Alejandro. I also used tree pots and Promix but sealed the top of the pot with "Press-n-Seal" with a hole in the center for the cutting. Just another idea.
If you root in January, you should have good growth by April 1st. You should see roots out of the bottom of the pot, if you bottom water. And it should be packed w roots by then. Then you transplant. Good luck!
Promix is not the best for the final potted fig tree because it doesn’t have any organic matter or fertilizer. I use promix mainly for cuttings and up potting smaller plants.
I found a fig rooting video where they measured 5 units of soil, then added 1 unit of water, then mixed it up. That was enough water to moisten the soil that you did not have to wring out excess water. You said promix hp, but showed a picture of promix bx can either be used?
@@thenotoriousfig Many of my fig cuttings leaf out, so I took them to the bright window ( weak winter sun, so no leave burning). The problem is they grow leaves, but not that vigorous of yours after a month. Instead they've been growing very slow, and I still don't see the roots. I used over -sized nylon bags before I bought the standard 4x16 though. How long it took your fig cuttings grew roots out of the pot's bottoms ? Did you get the same results using this method on varies of fig cuttings, or different results on different cuttings' conditions and varieties?
@@kqdwills last year I had many different varieties and they all did well with this method. What is your heat set at? Where is the thermostat prob? Are the pots still the same weight as when you started?
I moisten my mix the day before and leave it overnite to soak up the water. When i check it the next day, i either add a little more water or a little more perlite and make it so i don't have to squeeze the water out.
I did the cup and plastic bags with some cuttings. So far no cuttings got rotted yet, but the results appeared slower comparing to my other methods. It took over a month until the cutting grew foliage, and I couldn't see the roots. So I changed to use the fig pop method. Every time I used peat moss with perlite and a bit compost, so they leaf out a lot, but grew roots very slow. Lately I use coco coir, perlite and peat. I tend to always over water water, afraid they got dried up, since I used heat mass, so I had a one cutting rotted. One time I used the method from Korean gardener's channel and added some water at the bottom of the tote for moisture, but that was too much moisture. After a few days, they got molded, so I had to take out and redo them again. Geez. The problem is some of the cuttings I bought from Figbid and Ebay looked like they were old cuttings, so I worried they got dried up. Some sellers did cut the cuttings fresh out of their treed, after they got the orders, but those were less common varieties, so I only bought a few cutting (1-3) for each varieties.
Thanks for the video. Does it have to be a blue corn tortilla? :) just kidding!! I noticed on your video you showed a bag of Pro Mix BX. Did you use that or Pro Mix HP for your cuttings soil? Keep us posted on the tortilla!! Thanks Again
Excellent tutorial! Thank you for posting this video. I watched this video few times and have followed the steps exactly to root few cuttings which I failed few times last year. 2 things I would like to know please if you don't mind. 1) When do we start watering and what amount of water? 2) Watering question: This is a tall tree pot. I used to spray some water at the top every few days but the center and bottom soil remained dry. When I tried bottom watering, bottom soil remained very wet for long. How do you water these tree pots when the initial roots are forming? 3) When we open the plastic bag, do we have to open the bag for few mins the first day and gradually increase the time before we remove the plastic bag completely?
Great, and comprehensive. A point and a question. Point - how about applying a dollop of low melting hotmelt glue from a craft gun instead of wax? Question: It waa almost clear about the scoring of the bottom quarter or third of the cutting before dipping in hormone. Is that depth just enough to gt a bit of sap in contact with the hormone, do you suppose? Or, do you go deeper? Great work on OurFigs!
@@frankwilson2607 not sure about the glue gun, so long as it's not too hot. I usually score until I get past the cambium, the lime green layer past the brown bark.
Well I messed up. In my inexperience and excitement with some of my first fig cuttings I forgot to wrap the tips in parafilm. I followed this video for planting them and 3:30 am this morning remembered...lol. So, my question is should I try to go back and wrap them now while planted without disturbing them, try painting the tips with wax or just try to keep the tips misted? In the future I'm going to make a checklist so I don't forget steps. Thanks
If the cuttings haven’t been set for more than 10-14 days I’d try to gently wrap them or brush on wax. The wrap doesn’t have to be super tight given this situation.
Ok so I want to grow a single leader I up potted to 5 gallon it’s June can I choose from two leaders one and cut one or will it harm my fig trees have ten fig trees got them in April in tree pots up potted them to 5 gallon pails just wondering if it is to late to cut to one leader? Great video Alejandro! Couple of questions, how long do you keep the 4x9 treepots on a heating mat? Once there are shoots and a few small leaves, can I start fertilizing with quarter strength balanced fertilizer? Thanks!
if you have leaves and it's getting enough light, I'd leave it alone. Only bottom water just barely with 1/4 strength miracle grow (which is 1/2 indoor strength). are you using clear solo cups or treepots?
I am rewatching the video just to see the medium you use for rooting. I totally missed the 20/20/20 water mix used when I watched the video first time a few months ago. I always thought you need a sterile medium for rooting. Do you still recommend using the 1/4 strength of 20/20/20? Thanks and keep up the good work. i use HP.........I use a large bowl, put HP in the bowl ( enough for 1 pot ).......add a little water, mix it up........ if you squeeze the HP and water come out ( too wet ).......... if you squeeze the HP and it falls apart in your hand ( too dry ).......if you squeeze the HP, no water comes out and the HP holds together in a lump,,,..... Good point on this being the "final destination" the ultimate rooting method
It’s all about tinkering. You can root any number of ways, but why would you want to do a more difficult method. Thanks!

Promix is not the best for the final potted fig tree because it doesn’t have any organic matter or fertilizer. I use promix mainly for cuttings and up potting smaller plants.
Great channel. If your cutting has 3 nodes, do you bury 2 and leave 1 above the soil?
That's what I do

yeah, in my updated video I covered the 5:1 ratio. And yes promix bx or hp will work.
Hi. Great video. After you bag the cuttings. How often do you water them?
Not until they leaf out. Moisture stays constant until then bc of the plastic bag.

You have tons of variables. I made the video to provide one method and eliminate variables. If you stick to the method I show, you will get success.
Wondering if you’ve ever added Xtreme Gardening Mykos Mycorrhizae to your soil. I can’t find Pro-Mix HP.
if you don't have promix, I think you can approximate it with peat and perlite and crushing the Mykos and adding it to the cuttings soil.
Do you only use the Mycorrhizal inoculant that comes in the ProMix, or do you add it to subsequent waterings?
Just what's in the promix. If you want, you could sprinkle some in the hole before you put the cutting in.

I take them off heat when I see roots at bottom and have leaves, which is around 3-4 weeks.
Do you have to put waxon the top
If you don't wrap it
It helps so they don't dry out.
