Now documenting our renovation of a 1930s French Town House in the heart of Rural France which will become home for us and our two boys (and two girls (the dogs))
Installing a French drain in our French house renovation Part 1
We need to have our terrace functional for the summer which meant tackling the dreaded damp walls. We went with a very simple French drain to take water away from the walls and we also reduced down the amount of soil that was just sitting up against the walls which was one of the biggest reasons the walls were wet. The plan itself is quite simple, a small trench with some clean stone and perforated pipe which should take excess water away from the house and send it somewhere else.

Renovation update and lots of digging to create a terrace in our French House Renovation
Переглядів 2,1 тис.4 місяці тому
It's been too long since I last did a video. I had hoped to include a house tour of where we are at now in this video but I talked way too much and I was wrecked from a day of shovelling soil (that would have taken about 20 minutes to do with a mini digger) but c'est la vie. Summer has been slow to start here with it being much wetter this year than normal according to the locals. Stone arrives...
Giving New Life to our Jaded Bathroom - French Town House Renovation

Just tipping away at the tiling today with the majority of the floor now done bar the awkward cuts and the edge cuts. Next on the list is to box in the pipes and the side of the bath and perhaps do another coat of paint on the ceiling.
Tiling uneven floors with cement effect budget tiles - French House Renovation
Переглядів 2,3 тис.6 місяців тому
The day has finally come to start tiling the bathroom floor. Begone sticky black stuff and roll on smooth cool tiles beneath the feet (wish they were heated now brrrrrr). At just under 20 Euro a square meter these tiles fit the budget and look great. The process was much easier here in the bathroom and tiles are going down smooth despite the floor having big lumps missing where the old levellin...
Bathroom shenanigans, tiling in the kitchen and a big discovery in the garden

I'm a weekend warrior now for most big jobs as I'm a stay at home Dad during a lot of the week at the moment. Tackled some of the jobs that I've been looking at for a while now and happy to say it was a very productive day. I mention @colinfurze in this video and he is well worth subscribing to if you aren't one of the 13 million already subscribed!
Doing a bit of tiling in our French Renovation

We picked up the tiles that will complete the kitchen floor and also go down in the bathroom. I had thought this would be a really quick job but it did take a lot longer than expected given it is only 1.5 mt sq.! I put a metal edge on the floor and I had a nice square edge to work from so that helped a lot but I really had to pack it up to get to the correct height so used way more adhesive tha...
Work finally starts on the bathroom in our French Townhouse Renovation
Переглядів 1,6 тис.7 місяців тому
Work has finally started on the bathroom and we will hopefully have this room close to completed soon which will make bath time for the boys a lot more pleasant than it is at the moment with the sticky old floor that is currently there. I've also started building the boys beds which will be in another video I should have up soon. The weather here in France has just turned to summer but it is cr...
Clearing the garden
Переглядів 1,8 тис.7 місяців тому
We've no idea what we plan on doing in the garden but we really needed to get it cleared so we could see what we were working with. It was much cooler today with temps around 11 degrees compared to the 22 degrees two days ago so not a bad day to be working outdoors. The garden doesn't really have any structure and there is stuff planted randomly everywhere so it really is a blank canvas for us ...

A mixed bag of jobs getting done in this video. I shot and edited a music video for somebody last week and that took up a huge amount of evening editing time so this video was put on the back burner. France is warming up and so is the house as the bedroom is currently around 18 degrees and has had no heat on in over a week. Had a major breakthrough with managing the heat in the house and will c...
Push to try and get the hallway finished in our French Townhouse renovation

A lime plaster was required to get the levels on the wall right as the old plaster had just fallen off the bottom of the wall. This wall will then get a finishing coat of plaster and once that is done it can be painted and then we can put the floor in. There is a bit more to do under the stairs with a trap door required for access to the basement, some steps built to get down there, and some pl...

Ticking small jobs off the list as and when I get a chance. In this video the boys room gets a window sill (cill?) and a little book shelf in the fireplace. Like every job in the house nothing is square and nothing gets completely finished but it is all moving in the right direction!

A quick update from the renovation of our lovely French townhouse. We had some laminate flooring left over from doing downstairs so decided to use it on the landing upstairs. It is the little things that make such a big difference when you are living on a building site so each time a new bit of floor goes down it greatly reduces the amount of dust and cleaning required and life is just better.
EPIC battle to close a 2mm gap in a laminate floor
Переглядів 1,9 тис.8 місяців тому
Thankfully years working in IT has helped me to not throw the towel in when you think you are getting nowhere. Here's a short snippet from laying the floor in the landing upstairs where the only thing that was slowing me down was a wee small gap between two boards. I tried every trick in the book and tried from every angle using all my fingers and toes, I even had the family jumping on boards a...

I just realised I didn't video fixing the temperature issue with the instant hot water heater in the bathroom. There was a little shut off valve in the box that came with the unit and I thought it was just to turn off the water (instructions were in French!) but it wasn't. It reduces the incoming flow to the heater so the unit can actually heat the water rather than the flow being too fast for ...
Parqueting Is Such Sweet Sorrow
Переглядів 2,2 тис.8 місяців тому
Technically it is not parquet but laminating didn't work so well with the video title. The kitchen and sitting room floors are done. It took days, it shouldn't have taken days. Like every job on this project that is undertaken for the first time it takes way longer than it should and I know that the next time I do it the work will be done quicker. This isn't the case with this flooring. It is e...

Hope all is well ❤
Are you coming back anytime soon? Curious to see your progress
For some weird reason I didn't see this video come up - I hit the subscribe button again just to be sure I'm still added. I wondered where you've been lately so I went to your channel and discovered this vid from a month ago. You got a lot done and had so much help from the family. Glad to see you're all well.
Good to see you. You’ve got some good helper there, the boys are really growing. Glad your French Drain is working, lots of hard work there. Blessings.
Hello from sunny Tyrone great to see you back in action 🎬 French drain in France 🇫🇷 by a Irish man 👨 did I hear your son with Irish accent brilliant 👏 to see all the boys chipping away I wonder what your neighbours think of a Irish man restoring a French house build a rockery for all that clay🏠
Hard to believe I was there when the stones were delivered .. I have great Memories from my visit to you Maeva and the boys … and the girls 🐾. The house is bigger in real life and it was amazing to be there after watching you for so long on these videos … you are amazing and I’m so proud to be your sister . Sending lots of love to you all from Dublin 🫶💚 🇮🇪
Nice work! And it appears to be doing what you want it to.
hard going by hand
It’s grand, as you say
I'm sure the local cats will love the giant litter box!
That’s a lotta of digging and shoveling dirt but you’re doing a marvelous job with your lovely home in France. Emm but you have great help too with your lovely wee boys so cute. Love seeing your progress
What a task and it looks great. Your little helper is a star and that was a cracking good angle [from the upstairs] to place the camera at, it gives us a full view of the amount of work done. I'm impressed.
Good to see you, what a job. Good progress❤
Proud of you my love !! You are amazing 😍 je t'aime ! Love our house
Good to see you it's been 3 weeks lol just giving you a hard time, I know it's hard to film and get work done, and we appreciate it so much! Can't wait to see more videos, much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖 PS that was so cute with your little boy helping you ❤ God love you with all that digging by hand.
Nice to see you back!
Hey, thanks!
That’s a lot of hard digging Dave good tip for shoveling it over your shoulder. Wee George so cute blowing out the bubbles. Lovely job on the bathroom too and I loved the dancing. 💃
Welcome back….sound quite poor quality…difficulty hearing your voice
I hate to say it but the wooden beam lintel over the window seems to have a distinctive wood rot pattern. It's just never ending ay!
The floor has come up beautifully. Those chairs look so comfy and the armoir is really nice too. Starting to look like a home.
G'day again from Tasmania, island state of Australia. When you removed the wet plaster of the chimney and revealed the grey was that a cement render? That would explain moisture in and on the wall of the chimney.
I have seen a similar bodge repair for rotten fascias, They screw rigid plastic over the rotten wood and refix the gutters. It looks great until it all falls off!
Yay for the light. It's all looking good.
G'day Dave. I noted your reference to Dan and clean cement mixer .... lol ... so other than Dan in Escape to Rural France there is Billy in The Pethericks, Sean in Sean's World, Carole and Adrian from Chateau La Ferte although they have sold but their videos are still there. Also look for Chateau La Lalacelle with Terry, Ash and Tracey. All of them have great info. You are doing a great job already and I could feel the room getting warmer already after you put the insulation in.
Very satisfying seeing the yard being cleaned up. You’ve done so much work you deserve lots of coffees 🙌
Your tiles look great
Excellent work on the bathroom tiles considering you have the kiddies and other distractions
The tiles look very pretty. Are you putting a Chandelier ceiling light where the rose is? Love those triple lights above the dining table very nice effect btw. Yay! You may have a path already 👍
You have a very observant Supervisor there 😁
I like the paint colour, but the tiles? It’s a good fix for now. As long as it’s functional
Nice to see your interaction with the little one. He loves his new toy(sword). Love the music to the Timelapse 👍 Amazing wall art. Your Mum’s painting is gorgeous and so is the one of Marva pregnant with the doggie 👍
You’re getting there. Plastering is not the easiest job.
Window sill looks great.
I feel for you
Heater done, door fixed. More jobs finished ✅
I’m sure you must be pleased with your handy work.
You did well with the little one watching on. The floor boards looks good
How big is that Ferry? Exciting stuff 👏👏
Oh your so naughty. I thought you were using the kitchen sink. Love your new tool area
Nice cleaning up for your family
I would have got the biggest brush for that floor polishing, but that’s just me. You did a fantastic job it looks so nice.
You’re really smashing all the odd jobs left to do. Well done
You’ve done a fantastic job putting in the kitchen appliances, sink, etc. your very clever and the burner is in too it’s all coming together for yourself and family
