The correct way to fit brass compression fittings? (or so I'm told)

  • Attempting to fix the leaks in the kitchen ahead of the units being installed. Lots of bitty things getting done at the moment and Claude has been doing trojan work stripping the old wallpaper.

This is a daily vlog of our self-renovation of a French Townhouse which was originally built sometime in the 1930s. We left Ireland in August 2023 with our two kids and two dogs in search of a family home and these videos are a way to document the process for ourselves, as well as hopefully inspiring others to take on a similar project.

Great Dad in law lending a hand. Wallpaper is the worst to get off. Thank you for the update

Building and renovation is trial and error. In one of the homes I renovated with my now ex husband he connected the dishwasher incorrectly and it literally created a waterfall out the kitchen door and down the steps. (We did not divorce because we were renovators.)😁. You are doing a stellar job of this reno. I look forward to seeing your progress in further videos.

I couldn't find the mains water supply to turn it off once as I had to change a fitting so I thought I would chance it and be quick. Flooded the bathroom as the pressure was so high! Thanks for the lovely words Diane.

It's good to learn that the old pipe sticking out of the floor isn't round (been bent at some point in time) - it will get sorted out. The hallway and bedroom look great with the wallpaper gone, it really is a nice space.

Did a little painting in the hallway tonight to see how it looks!

So sorry about your water issues. I was taught to put plumbers tape on wrong also. It makes perfect sense after your explanation. The house is really coming together. We had major repairs and upgrading that we did ourselves. I wish I was there to help you with all the cleaning. Can’t wait to see your video each day.

Nice update, all coming together. Good temporary working platform. Plastering is getting better.

I'd like to try a good old fashioned gypsum plaster now to see how it goes on. The lime plaster is really coarse and you can feel the sand in it so really hard to get smooth. Great for filling big cavities but not for smooth finishing.

I’m a regular diy guy and had difficulty sealing brass fittings recently in a pumped shower which did not use unions. Tape was useless but thread lock compound( non hardening goop ) from Screwfix Ballymount worked a treat. You’re making great progress and are amazing putting your videos out while working long days. Good luck with plumbing.

Thanks Brian. There is a bit of work involved in the videos and long term it wouldn't be sustainable but given the timeframe it is worth capturing all the work now for the archive. Once we move in the pace might slow a bit and videos will probably be a bit more project focused.

As a plumber i do not use tape or anything on my compression fittings. Just make sure its clean and tighten well and they should not leak. Good luck!

It makes so much sense now I think about it after reading all the really helpful comments. Thanks Domaine.

PTFE liquid is what you use on compression fittings which lubricates and seals at the same time. I am a plumber of 40 years

hi, I've never seen tape used like that, its always goes on the thread, pulled tight and wrapped around a few times, maybe 10 at least, my late father in law was a plumber all his life and that's how he showed me... good luck if your way works thats all that matters. take care cheers

The brass on brass makes sense to me now I think about it. I guess either way will work if it is done right. We've the same stove as you here in the gite and there is some heat off it once it is up to speed. There or four good logs a day will keep you toasty.

I would suggest NOT using the Teflon tape on a brass compression union (or joint), this type of union is supposedly made so that when the soft brass is compressed over the copper when you screw down (tighten) the end, metal comes into contact with metal and will "mush" together. Using the Teflon tape gets into the way of this metal on metal compression upon itself. The tape is also not used/needed on the threads since no water contact, in fact the tape will interfere with with tightening the threads to maximum torsion. The only time you use Teflon tape is on threaded pipe like brass, old lead pipes, black steam (pressure) pipes. Myself, I went back to using the old "pipe goop" instead of the Teflon tape, the goop will harden over a few days and keep the threaded joints tight, the Teflon is good if you want to break the threaded union in a couple months for some reason (such as a temporary union). Everyone has his/her own preference based on his/her own experience, but do NOT use plumber's tape or goop on a compression union, you want the soft metal to be in direct contact with metal to smash it together when you tighten it down. Also, never try to re-use a compression union, the ring should be thrown out, otherwise if you try to re-use it again it will never seal properly.

That all makes so much sense. Why would you want to interfere with that union of metals. The guys from the council didn't use anything when they fit the water meter, which at the time I was very confused about. Makes sense now. Thanks for the detailed comment.

I started my housebuilding days with this teflontape but it was rubbish, leaks everywhere. Then switched to flax fibres and fat, (on the threads) and never had a leak again. The tape is just too sensitive if you are not a professional doing it everyday.

I shall be retiring the tape to the back of the toolbox now!

Why you don‘t do the floor bevor installing the kitchen?

    • @dublinvanlife466
      @dublinvanlife466  7 місяців тому

I might still do that. I read somewhere that you should only do it on a solid floor though and half the kitchen is on the floor with timber joists and OSB boards.
