I have been making ceramics for 30 years and have a long track record of exhibiting, selling and teaching. I make non functional ceramic vessel forms that have rich painterly surfaces that are created with multiple and varying techniques and materials. I like to keep an experimental strand running through my work that helps my work to continuously evolve and develop. Since 2020 I have lived and worked in Cornwall, my work has always been influenced by my surroundings and now I am in Cornwall I have a wealth of dramatic coastal and rural landscapes to inspire me

Selecting Work for an Exhibition
My next Online Exhibition starts at 7pm on Sunday 26th November 2023. It will be on my website and there will be at least 18 new pieces that have been made specifically for this exhibition. They can be shipped anywhere in the world.
I had more pieces than I needed for my exhibition so I have spent some time carefully looking and making decisions about which pieces to include. I really enjoy taking my time looking at my work once it’s been fired. I sometimes enjoy the unexpected effects that the kiln creates but also discover pieces that I have to continue working on to get right.
I really enjoy doing my Online Exhibitions as it gives people all over the world the opportunity to buy a piece. If you have a chance to have a look at this collection of work on my website, then I hope you enjoy it, and thanks in advance if you are able to buy one.
Use this link to go to my Online Exhibition. (Nothing will be visible until the exhibition starts)

Large Slab Built Vessels
Making with larger pieces of clay is an enjoyable challenge. The process is much the same as when making smaller pieces except a few props are needed and a bit of thought about the process before going ahead. The form of the piece I am demonstrating in this video is more challenging because of the rounder shaped base. I am using Earthstone Smooth Textured Crank which is covered with a slip made...
Draw to Explore

I’m thankful that during this period when my wrist is broken that I can still draw and therefore explore ideas and imagery in my sketchbook that could evolve into new ceramic pieces. When I go out into the landscape to look for inspiration, and more often when I’m not looking for inspiration but find it at unexpected times in unexpected places, I will then come back to the studio to capture the...
Ceramic Wall Pieces
Most of the ceramic works that I make are non functional vessels but I also like to make these ceramic wall pieces. I like making them with irregular edges that are then contained in a more precise white frame. They have different creative challenges compared with making more 3 dimensional pieces, not least trying to keep them flat as they dry out. I employ all the mark making techniques and ma...
Opening the Kiln
Unpacking pots from the kiln is always an eagerly anticipated part of the making process. It’s usually enjoyable and rewarding but also a relief. Although I have a fairly good idea about what will happen to the materials that I’ve applied I never fully know how they are going to react and look. Handling and feeling the pots also tells me something about them and is also enjoyable and insightful...
Glazing a group of pots
This group of 6 pots have had their first firing and are ready to glaze. Although most of the mark making and colour is added before the first firing there is some important work to do adding areas of glaze and oxide to the surface to enhance the surface and composition of marks and shapes. Larger areas of glaze are added using a spray gun while smaller areas can be brushed on. I only us 2 glaz...
Slab built pots, from start to finish.

I’ve been making more of these ceramic pieces where I wrap clay around wooden blocks. This way of working helps to retain the soft feel of the clay in the fired final pieces. This video follows the journey of the pieces from making and constructing the slabs through to adding slips, engobes and underglazes and then onto analysing the fired final pieces and the process of making decisions about ...
Making Clay Slabs
The start of my making process is to prepare some clay slabs. I make these using my hands and a rolling pin rather than a slab roller. I explain the benefits of using my hands and a rolling pin in this video. The clay I am using is Earthstone Handbuilding Material (ES 40) which is a medium grogged clay that fires to an off white colour that is a good base for other colours than I then add. Inst...
Slab Building Basics
Slab building with clay is a wonderfully flexible process that can be used to create a hugely diverse range of ceramic outcomes. Essentially it’s a technique in which flat slabs of clay are cut, formed and assembled together to make 3 dimensional ceramic forms. In this video I am demonstrating how I use this technique of building to create my own work. The clay I’m using in this demonstration i...
Creative Ceramic Slab Building
Slab building with clay can be a very flexible and creative handbuilding process. I really enjoy this part of making my ceramics where I cut and reassemble the pots when they are leatherhard. The outcome of doing this results in shapes, torn edges and steps that become part of the structure of a piece and can be enhanced further when I add colour, texture and additional marks. Instagram instagr...
An Alternative Slab Building Technique
This is a ceramic slab building technique that I really like using occasionally. It allows me to capture the soft qualities of the clay in the final piece of ceramic work. The form is made from soft clay rather than the more conventional practice of allowing slabs to go leatherhard before building with them. The stability of the soft slabs while building is achieved by the all important wooden ...
Painting a black clay slab pot
This slab pot is made of a black clay body. I’m adding layers of engobe and slip to create a depth of colour. More detail is then added with some monoprinted marks and then some brighter underglaze is used to create a stronger coloured point of detail. I like getting in a flow when I work on the surface of my pots. I treat them like paintings and enjoy composing the variety of marks across the ...
Glazing The Inside
Although the focus of my ceramic pots is the outside surface and form, the inside is also important. In this short video I explain how I create the dark finish that I typically use in my work. The mix of manganese and copper oxide that I use is mixed with water to create an ink like liquid that I pour into the pots once they have been biscuit fired. This mix of oxides typically has a metallic b...

Fire to Cone 5/6. Higher is Cone 10
If you placed this piece wet into a electric kiln, it will explode
there is a freedom here in your work and how you work.... that I haven't ever seen in pottery before. Incredibly refreshing to know I am stepping into an art form (one that I have been afraid to tackle my entire life because I always had an image that these objects are fired and need to be "perfect" to become that permanent ... actually realizing this is how I think of all art that is worthy of hanging on a wall or sitting on a table...hmmm there is some deep psychological personal history lesson in there somewhere, eh?) anyway stepping into this type of expression is eye opening to me. and I am loving it. I cannot wait to work on my own mindset whilst building things that bring me joy, as yours does to you. Thank you so much for sharing this process and letting the process show.
Thanks for sharing your process, it's given me some much needed inspiration to get back into the studio
🥰😍
Craig, You have helped me liberate myself from the confinement of rules of how to of ceramic work. I has made me feel daunted, as my style of working loose, whether its painting, water of sculpture. THANKYOU!! you have impacted my future work
Great work!!
I love your work and am inspired watching you. Thank you for your generous sharing 🙏🏼👌
Incredibly useful. Thanks.
thank you so much! please, keep share your wonderful skills with us, it very helpful :)
What the ?Come on
I’m glad it’s a bit edgy😉 and not for everyone.
How do you make these AMAZING pastel pencils?!
There are various ways to do this but one way is to get some slip dry it out to a clay consistency and roll it into pastels. To prevent it being so fragile and crumbly you can add some gum arabic, pva glue or fire them to a low temperature (about 500degrees C)
Good evening Craig, Thanks for sharing your beautiful work. the clays you use are for low cooking, or do you use medium temperature stoneware? Thanks for the reply
I use stoneware clay and fire it to 1140C. It’s almost vitrified but not quite but that doesn’t bother me as I see my work as paintings made in clay.
Hi! Your work is very exciting! I just had a look to see your name and I nearly fell off the sofa! You are due to have a 4 day workshop at the pottery studio I have my pottery classes at and am hoping to be able to attend your course! I was obviously meant to see this video! Can’t wait to meet you in person! Kind regards!
I’m back there in October and again next year in May. So glad you like what I do.
I use a mix of 6 parts manganese dioxide and 1 part copper oxide. But you can vary this mix and get different effects.
@@CraigUnderhill7 lieben Dank!, so werde ich den Versuch durchführen..😊
Learning so mUCH FROM YOUR STYLE
I find these pieces very interesting and I would fill my house with them if my house was more contemporary. My place is a cowboy inspired ranch and would love to see some I may use.
It's so good watching this as it makes me me feel less anxious about just having a go.
Good for you, go for it. It’s only clay.
Great job!
Sehr interessante Formen, lieber Craig.
I’ve started pottery class for beginners 4 weeks ago and honestly, I’m completely hooked? Do I just need to practice rolling out a square slab? I’ve watched you do it on one of your videos? Thanks Craig.
Yes, practice if you want to get it right and if it’s useful to you.
Outstanding... The way your creative mind think... Iove it
Amazing!
this looks like nothing i’ve ever seen before, for a second there i didn’t believe this is clay. gorgeous!
Thanks for watching. It’s definitely clay
I love this. You’re creativity is on another level. You’re a serious national treasure 👍🏻
High praise and positivity. Thank you 🙏
Sweet.
Very helpful! Thank you. How to get a rectangle rather than an oval has been a mystery to me, but no longer. Also, incorporating the reclaim to neutralize it's "shortness!"
You’ll be rolling perfect squares in no time 👍
What paint is that
All ceramic materials that include slip, engobe, underglaze and oxides.
I really like the way you work, and the results are sublime.
Thank you, I’m glad you can appreciate what I do 🙏
Make more videos regularly. Amazing work.🎉❤
Make more videos regularly
Absolutely amazing🎉😮😊
Hi! I just love your works! Learn moore about my own works also get alot of insperience /Thank you♥
.... awesome video, thanks for sharing!
Love your work. What temperature do you fire the grog to?
I don’t have a specific temperature. I get different types of grog with different temperatures, so as low as 600C and as high as 1140C
Love your work, reminds me of Tapies paintings on occasions. Curious to know do you fire above 1140 degrees in your final firing, as they have a stoneware look to them? Regards Richard
A comparison to Tapies is always welcome 🙏 1140C is the highest temp I fire too. It’s ideal for me because it looks matured like stoneware but retains good bright colours.
4:39 watching now. How did the clay get to be yello?
It has a yellow engobe on it, and because it’s been fired in the kiln at this stage it has turned yellow.
Good afternoon Craig, you have amazing works that I want to look at endlessly. I work in a similar technique, but there is not much space and freedom in my work. I hope to learn this from you by watching your ceramics.
Thanks for sharing your technique. I love your work and your approach ❤
Beautiful and great advice thank you for sharing
your work really resonates with me. I'm a potter/painter/printer also. Encouraging to go with such thin clay. I also worked doing Architectural drawings. I like the large areas contrasted with the thin line. Another favorite texture is a news paper crumpled up to a ball and then covered with tin foil.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and creativity
Of all the pieces I've admired and watched you create, this one is my favorite for all the reasons you described! I'm a retired primary school teacher so the added lettering with the pastel against the black background reminds me of the wonderful days of teaching penmanship on a slate blackboard. How you've added pieces against a 'too thin' side and straightened up the piece with a 'glob' at the bottom reminds me of how children think to "fix" their creations. The unevenness across the top delights me. I'm just beginning to take handbuilt clay classes. My instructor makes comments about smoothing out the seams and making everything perfect like a machine may create. I've explained to her that I like how I'm making mine a one-of-a-kind piece. After all, Pablo Picasso said, "It took me my whole life to learn how to paint like a child." I wish I could admire your creations in person but I live across the ocean. Wishing you all the best and thank you for allowing me to learn from you via your tutorials.
It’s important to enjoy the process of making and not feel the need to work in a certain prescribed way. Thanks for the message, it’s great to know that people really understand what I’m doing. Clay is a wonderful material and it should be enjoyed for what it is rather than trying to make it do things it’s less good for.
Your works are amazing. Thank you for sharing
What is ongob?
It’s engobe and is very similar to slip but engobe has a small amount of flux in it which makes it less dry than a slip.
@@CraigUnderhill7 thanks☺️ self-learning pottery sometimes feel overwhelming.. without the online ceramic community I’d feel so lost
Love these, insiring
