Ceramic Wall Pieces

- Most of the ceramic works that I make are non functional vessels but I also like to make these ceramic wall pieces. I like making them with irregular edges that are then contained in a more precise white frame. They have different creative challenges compared with making more 3 dimensional pieces, not least trying to keep them flat as they dry out. I employ all the mark making techniques and materials that I use when making my vessel forms and find that an experimental approach can often lead to new ways of working and different visual outcomes.
I usually have a few pieces available and they can be shipped anywhere in the world.
The frame size of the small ones are 26cm x 29cm
and the larger ones are 38cm x 42cm
Email me if you’d like to see the pieces I have available-

I sing your praises and I admire your teaching immensely!
Thank you 🙏
Good afternoon Craig, you have amazing works that I want to look at endlessly. I work in a similar technique, but there is not much space and freedom in my work. I hope to learn this from you by watching your ceramics.
AMAZING !! Love how you straddle the world of painting and ceramics
I love the way you shared your playful sketches and how they lead to your ceramics
I always enjoy the multiple planes of your vessel forms as if they are companion paintings in conversation. So, alas! Now these must each be a soliloquy! So, so lovely!!!! So evocative and inspiring.
So happy to meet someone "not rectangular"! A painting in volume. marks, irregularity...I'm an engraver and your work is very inspiring. Thanks.
This is amazing! Thank you for inspiration and new methods to work with clay! It’s really rare to find an artist who is generously sharing his working and creating methods online. I had a lot of thoughts and ideas while watching this! Bless you 🙏
Glad it gave you some inspiration. Good luck with your creative journey.
Thank you for showing your process. Your work is awesome.
I find these pieces very interesting and I would fill my house with them if my house was more contemporary. My place is a cowboy inspired ranch and would love to see some I may use.
Thank you for sharing the process of such beautiful works with clay
c'est fascinant de vous regarder travailler! j'adore😍
Merci du partage la terre est vraiment une matière qui donne beaucoup de liberté a la créativité. Avec beaucoup de contrainte aussi !! Très belles créations !!
So love your work. You make the process look straightforward but as someone who has previously done pottery making a good slab piece is no mean feet. Very inspiring

Thank you Nathalie, I’m pleased that you get so much from my videos. I intend to make more but have just broken my wrist which has slowed me down a little. Good luck with your ceramic journey.
Lovely
Fascinating video! Thank you very much for showing us all your tricks of the trade! Could you do a video of how to frame your wall pieces?
beautiful work. Glad I've found you. I have a small piece of yours on my wall for years not knowing what the signature is on its back... yay, Ive found you. I bought it at an art fair years ago... amazing to see your process THANKYOU
That’s great, are you able to send a photo.
@@CraigUnderhill7 yes... not sure how to attach it here tho...
I love your work. Wish I was a potter like you.
Learning so mUCH FROM YOUR STYLE
Thank you for sharing. I love watching your process and hearing your inner thoughts about what you are seeing, doing and thinking.
I’m glad that comes across. Thanks for watching.
Huge thanks! So love your work
Would be great to know how you attach the panels.. Love your work, thanks for sharing
Thank you, I will try to get round to that.
I love watching your process. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Craig! I'm a big fan of your work and had a quick question for you... How do you connect the ceramic pieces to the frame backing?
I glue a piece of plywood to the back of the ceramic piece and this gives different option to attach it to the wooden frame.
I wanted to join your workshop in March at La Meridiana, alas, I was too late, and it was already filled. Will you offer other workshops in 2025?
Hi Craig, absolutely love your work, and have learned a lot watching your videos. A question, how do you fix your pieces to the box frames, especially if they're to be transported,. I live on an Island, so anyone purchasing pieces framed from me would have to "Take away" ? Thanks in anticipation. Toby, St martins, Scilly
Hello Toby, I glue a piece of plywood to the back of the ceramic piece, this gives me something I can screw into to attach to the wooden frame.
@@CraigUnderhill7 Thank you so much Craig, was scratching my head about this.
Beautiful!! I'm curious to know how you mount the pieces in the frames. They appear to be floating in the video.
There is a piece of thin plywood glued to the back of the ceramic piece. I can screw into this from the back of the frame and it raises them up a little so they float.
I have been following you on youtube and learning a lot. Curious to know how you make engobe. I would like to come to you one day for a course. Best regards :)
I’d need more than a few lines on here to explain. Engobe is a mid point between slip and glaze. I like it because it’s not as matte as slip.
is it paint color or glaze color
They are all ceramic colours that are capable of being fired in a kiln which makes them permanent.
Do you only bisque fire these since they won’t be handled, or do they need to be glaze fired as well?
They are all fired at least twice. The bisque / glaze firing difference is not something that really matters to me.
Thanks again for explaining your design ideas and how you work. I wonder what clay you work with?
Generally I use Earthstone ES40 but I experiment with other clays. I also have a grogged terracotta and a heavily grogged black clay that I use.
beautiful work! do you teach in the US anywhere?
No I don’t but have had lots of interest in the USA. I wonder if someone could organise a workshop for me in the USA. Some people actually travel from there to do my workshops in the UK so it would make sense for me to go there.
What is name of material upu used for top mixed media design? Also what were you spraying for the number? What equipment did you use to spray?
Is “grob” something on the market or is something I can do at home? If I can do at home, is it the collection of what, if I may ask?
Grog is the material I use to add texture. There are many different types on the market. They are basically crushed pieces of fired clay. You could make your own. I have done a video on adding grog to the surface to create texture, check out the other videos on my channel.
@@CraigUnderhill7 thank you so much!!!😄
Would you sell/ post your glaze pencil ? Love your work
I use underglaze pencils that I buy and make my own pastels from slip and engobe. I don’t have glaze pencils.
Hi Craig , yes sorry I’m new to clay , I’m a painter usually.. yes the pastel is something I’m interested in if you are happy to make and sell . Julie
what size and brand is that sketchbook?
It’s A3 size and either Daler Rowney or Windsor and Newton.
@@CraigUnderhill7thank you!
