How to Increase Your Marks with the Right Study Habits
In today's video, we explore how understanding and changing your habits can boost your chances of getting into a NSW selective high school or reaching your academic goals in general. Drawing from James Clear's "Atomic Habits," we'll cover:
- How Habits Are Formed: Learn how your brain creates habits through repeated experiences and patterns.
- Changing Habits Through Awareness: Discover the importance of tracking your daily routines and identifying triggers that lead to automatic behaviors.
- Utilising the Habit Scorecard: Use this tool to categorise your daily activities and see how they align with your academic goals.
We'll also introduce the pointing-and-calling technique to help you stay accountable and focused. Achieving your academic goals requires more than just tutoring-it takes dedicated effort and the right habits. Start small, stay consistent, and transform your study habits for success.

    Hi John, the naplan reports had changed from numerical bands to proficiency standards (exceeding, strong, developing, needs additional support). I was wondering if I could get into the top selective schools with 3 exceeding in numeracy, writing, and grammar and 2 strong in reading (right under the exceeding line) and spelling (above half of the strong band). And for my half yearly, I got Cs in Textiles and History :( but the rest was As and english was a B.

      for the super top ones, your naplan is not the strongest but is not bad. The C's will hurt a bit though but that is only for your half yearly. they can have a package that requires both writing or just one of them. most schools right now just have one writing task, abstract reasoning, reading and maths. There is another package for HAST that schools can opt in for which is reading, maths and 2 writing tasks (removing abstract reasoning).

    Hi john, this video was so helpful! I am taking the HAST exam for hornsby girls in year 9, I was wondering for mathematical reasoning what are the sorts of questions at will be common throughout the test? like will they mostly be word problems, or like interpreting data/graphs ect. also just to confirm, almost any math topic may be included in the test right(within difficulty range)? and will it be necessary to memorise formulas like volume of a cylinder, cone ect. ? Also, could you explain how the preference order works? out of the 3 selective schools that you choose I also would love if you made a video about how to manage time in an exam. Thank you so much for the helpful videos!

    • @BingsAcademy
      @BingsAcademy 6 днів тому

      glad you enjoyed it! Fortunately you have future years to practice and perhaps get tutoring for the exam. For the mathematical reasoning component, it is worded math problems and definitely interpreting data/graphs. There may also be science topics but will still involve math. The math is quite basic but it is all about applying it properly. The preference order you put down if they also have HAST means you will go to the test centre to your highest choice. Let's say you go for hornsby, girraween and fort street (in that order). Then you will do the hast test at hornsby and they will share your results to girraween and fort street since you obviously can't attend all three schools at the same time to do the test.

    Group tutoring vary in size, style and teaching style. This clip is not an accurate reflection on this type of learning as it is an affordable, motivating and encouraging option for many. If the groups are organized and taught correctly then they can be much more successful. Criticing those making profits is okay for some but many students wish to get top education to get top jobs, therefore well paid jobs....? So are we all not aiming for profits where possible? I can't share too much as we are also tutoring students in the subject. But just know that they do not usually have complex math concepts rather they are pretty basic. Instead, they are all worded math problems that focus on application. Sometimes they are on scientific concepts but you don't really need science knowledge to solve, just maths,

    Hello! I currently have 5 A's and 4 B's among my 9 subjects (A in Math, English, Science, Music and Art), and I am also doing APSMO (Maths Olympiad Senior division) which is an extra curricular activity. I was wondering if this is acceptable in order for me to get in Penrith, Girra or Baulko, thanks! <3

      hey! I would have liked more A's but definitely not bad. You will need to do more extra curricular activities if that is the only thing you have completed. Have a look at the supporting documentation video I shared! Penrith and Girra were really fun schools ( I went to both) so wishing you the best!

    • @BingsAcademy
      @BingsAcademy Місяць тому

      too many variables at play. 73-80% in the actual selective test or from sample tests? This year's exam was definitely on the easier side so the raw score/average would be higher than previous years as more people will score better. I would recommend going for more conservative options especially as there were more than 2000 more students doing the test this year

    If I wrote the whole thing as someone was explaining the news and in present tense would I still be able to score at least about 19-20? My vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure were good (as I double-checked). I wrote 300+ words (31 lines and about 9 - 11 words in each sentence). I know it is hard for you to tell as you don't know my writing piece but an approximation would be great! Other than that, great video!

    How hard is it to get into hurlstone, if I usually average 70s, 80s and 90s in my mock test exams and previous ones. Do I have a chance and will the cutoff for hurlstone be harder or the same since the amount of students taking the test increased.

    • @BingsAcademy
      @BingsAcademy 2 місяці тому

      it is quite hard as the raw score in the mock exam doesn't give us information for us to determine whether that will translate into the actual exam. If we compare this year's exam to previous year's, it was definitely on the easier side so it would average a higher raw score. I would say the cutoff for hurlstone is definitely higher this year in 2024 as the overall acceptance rate is reduced with the thousands more students doing the test this year.

      you can buy them from the ACER website. Although keep in mind the ones there are a lot more easier than the real test. Square Puzzle Questions can be seen in the exam though so keep an eye out for that.

      very different! for starters, VIC is only selective 9-12. NSW has selective from year 7. So the difficulty would vary. NSW also has a lot more schools and applicants compared to the 4 schools in VIC. The question types, format, approach will vary.

      what year are you doing it? Biggest tip is that it is a grind. Ideally you are doing it in year 7 or 8 so you have some extra time if it does not work out. Personally it took me 3 tries (3 years) to make it into girraween so if you are only looking to try once and giving up, this is likely not the right mindset to have.

    Hi John, I completed the selective test, and I am stuck on what schools to choose for my choices. I currently live in Campbelltown-Liverpool area. I am stuck between two sets of school choices to pick. Which are 1st Sydney Boys, 2nd Hurlstone Agricultural high school and 3rd Sydney technical high school. The other choice which I am thinking of is, 1ST Hurlstone Agricultural high school, 2nd Sydney technical high school and 3rd Macquarie Fields High School. In the test, I found Maths extremely easy, Writing was good and pretty easy, Reading was ok, and Thinking skills was ok. I think I'll get 33-35 in maths, 18-21 in reading, 27-31or32 in thinking skills and 19-22 out of 25 in writing. What school do you think I should think John? and thank you for all the amazing tips you have provided on your channel.

      it is too hard to tell as I don't know you not our student, might be best to speak with your tutor if you had one for selective. I recommend being more conservative though as we have had the highest number of applicants this year for selective than any other year.
