  • In this video, we explore the 2024 NSW Selective Writing Exam, focusing on a newspaper report titled "Animals on the Loose." With 18,544 NSW Year 6 students competing for about 4,200 selective high school spots, this year's test posed unique challenges and was the most competitive exam in its history. Performing well in the writing component will be important for students who are aiming for the higher ranked selective schools and in addition, can help students in the future to succeed in this area. John spoke to all Bing's Academy students who did the test this year on the 9th May 2024 and was able to recreate the exam while simultaneously helping parents/students receive important insights.
    Key Highlights:
    - Title Importance: The title sets a crisis tone. Use "Animals on the Loose" or a similar creative title.
    - Context: Multiple sightings of escaped animals heading to town. Detail this context in your response.
    - Format: Write a newspaper report for the local paper, naming it appropriately. Follow the dot points in the question and make sure to keep an objective tone and present factual information. Use clear, concise language and proper grammar.
    Note: While the question discussed may not exactly match the one in the exam, the analysis remains a valuable resource for students seeking to understand the complexities of the test.

    Hello!
    My most recent report card was disgustingly absolutely terrible rock bottom. But my previous report card was Excellent (somewhat). I was also in ACE class during the last report but not now. Would a selective transfer be possible?

      @BingsAcademy  Місяць тому

      they will look at a minimum of 2 reports but sometimes 3! so it is your performance over time if you are looking to transfer into a selective school. definitely possible but be sure to work hard over time!

    If I wrote the whole thing as someone was explaining the news and in present tense would I still be able to score at least about 19-20? My vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure were good (as I double-checked). I wrote 300+ words (31 lines and about 9 - 11 words in each sentence). I know it is hard for you to tell as you don't know my writing piece but an approximation would be great! Other than that, great video!

      haha it is definitely hard to tell! the tense will be a huge sticking point so you definitely will struggle getting in the top 10% overall as most people would know they have to be past tense.

    How hard is it to get into hurlstone, if I usually average 70s, 80s and 90s in my mock test exams and previous ones. Do I have a chance and will the cutoff for hurlstone be harder or the same since the amount of students taking the test increased.

      it is quite hard as the raw score in the mock exam doesn't give us information for us to determine whether that will translate into the actual exam. If we compare this year's exam to previous year's, it was definitely on the easier side so it would average a higher raw score.
      I would say the cutoff for hurlstone is definitely higher this year in 2024 as the overall acceptance rate is reduced with the thousands more students doing the test this year.

    Hello Bing
    My son score between 73% to 80% what is best school choices we can consider if he expects 80% may be a little bit lower or higher?
    Thanks

      too many variables at play. 73-80% in the actual selective test or from sample tests?
      This year's exam was definitely on the easier side so the raw score/average would be higher than previous years as more people will score better. I would recommend going for more conservative options especially as there were more than 2000 more students doing the test this year

    Hi John! How different is the NSW selective test to the VIC one

    • @BingsAcademy
      @BingsAcademy  2 місяці тому

      very different! for starters, VIC is only selective 9-12. NSW has selective from year 7. So the difficulty would vary. NSW also has a lot more schools and applicants compared to the 4 schools in VIC.
      The question types, format, approach will vary.

      @@ethancheng9841You should always have a backup school if you don’t make it into selective, I sat the test this year and I have a backup school if I don’t get in for any of my 3 schools.

      @@HenryXu-sf8nw what recommendations are you looking for? There are only 4 selective school options in Melbourne you can go for.
