- Опубліковано 18 жов 2024
- The NSW Selective exam is a highly competitive test that many students in Australia aspire to take, aiming for benefits like an enriched academic setting and potentially higher ATAR scores in Year 12. While we've previously discussed preparation strategies, today's focus is on the post-exam period, specifically how to make the most of the feedback received.
In this video, we explore:
CSS Framework: The role of Consistency, Smart decision-making, and Self-awareness in navigating the period after the exam.
Honest Self-Assessment: The importance of being honest and self-aware when evaluating your performance.
Flexible School Choices: Why being flexible in your school choices can help you make the most of the feedback you receive.
Peer Comparison: How comparing your feedback to that of your peers can offer a more comprehensive view of your performance.
Exam Discussion: Our approach to discussing the exam experience with students, including example questions that can be useful.
By taking into account the feedback received after the exam and applying the CSS framework, both students and parents can make more informed decisions about future educational paths. It's important to approach this process with honesty and flexibility to effectively utilise the feedback.

FOR ANYONE SEEING THIS
good luck with your selective exam!! im also doing it this year :)
its okay and normal to feel nervous as it is quite a difficult exam.
DO NOT stress as itll make you forget EVERYTHING - focus on the exam and the exam only.
thats all i have but again, good luck to anyone going for the test and i hope you guys get in!!
the selective test is tomorrow!! i cant believe it.
im still struggling with math as my scores are pretty inconsistent. one day i get above average, and the other i get on average.
your videos really help, and i hope ill be able to make it in tomorrow. :))
i hope tomorrow is the day where it is above average! let me know how you find the exam!
Same! One day I get 28 then I get 18
@@BingsAcademy the exam was alright
thinking skills was alright
reading was alright
math was quite easy
writing i did NOT do good in - the topic was silly
overall there werent really that many changes from last year - maybe a few types of math questions but thats it
@@aayushaa good to hear that math was really good for you and reading/thinking skills not being too hard. writing there was a few 'tricks' in the question this year. I will be replicating the question and breaking that down soon!
hey! an update: i made it to my first choice! no reserves or anything. thank you so much! @@BingsAcademy
can you do a last minute English overview
haha it is so last minute!! what do you want to know in particular?
Just some tips and tricks
nice
you commented fast!
I am doing the HAST test and I was wondering where we do the exam as for all the schools that I want to apply to the test is on the same day, and then I found out I'll be doing the test once so where do you do the test but still apply for the three schools.
you will do the test in the school in which you put as the first preferred option! I.e. if you put girraween, hurlstone and hornsby girls in that order, you will only need to do the test at girraween and they will share the results with your other schools.
Hi!! Remember me?? Well, thank you for your tips before the test and after because one of the tips did help!! I got into Sydney Girls High School!! It was my first choice too!! Thank you :)
woohoo - congratulations! Yes I do. I hope you enjoy it next year! It has lots of extracurricular so it is not purely academically focused, I think that will be fun.
It certainly will be a great experience and I always will revisit the channel!! Thank you again!! I recommended the channel to some of my students (I tutor kids)@@BingsAcademy
Hi Jhon. I want to transfer into Hurlstone for year 8. I have a B for religion, a C for english, an A for maths, an A for music, a C for history, a B for PDHPE, a C for science and a C for technology. In total I have two A's two B's and 4 C's. Is that good? I also want to sit the HAST test on the August 5th. I only have a month. Cn you give me tips. I've already watched all your HAST test video etc etc.
have another look at my other video on what an ideal report should look like and compare it yourself! you would know where your report is looking at - but getting a C means you are not doing very well.
I felt that your videos helped me particularly the framework. I prepared for this for two years, I hope I get the result I wanted
ahh that is so good to hear! I think the framework is awesome and I wish i knew it when i was younger. It would have let me be more prepared for it. I hope you get the result you want as well! let me know how you find it
unfortunately i didnt make it into selective...
now im going to epping boys and theres something called enrichment so my question is that is the enrichment test(HPGE) the same thing as the hast test
darn, good luck for the enrichment class! I am not sure about that test in particular, every school will have a slightly different test. it might be similar though
IM SOO HAPPY THAT ITS OVERRRR :DD
congratulations! hopefully you make it in as well :)
Just one year ago I thought I had so much time until selective….
Now I have 1 day.
(Still studied though)
time flies! you will then find that the results will come out quicker than you think too. good luck!
@@BingsAcademy thanks!
@@BingsAcademy oh sorry John, I have one more question, will the 2023 exam be somewhat similar to the 2022 selective exam??
@@rathnakermadadi3318 it should have a lot of similarities in terms of format! also look at the 2021 exam too, not just the 2022 one!
@@BingsAcademy thanks, my tutor told me that maths would be quite similar so I was kinda counting on it to be a subject that would bring my rank up - that’s why I asked
Bing just a question regarding the HAST and redoing selective. I got sent to an advanced maths class this year and it isn't mentioned in the report. Sadly I got all B's in my report and in the video you mentioned that I needed to get at least 5 A's in the report. The thing is that science and English are 2 subjects that I got B's in and did better than average as majority got C's. Is this a good sign
hey,
Unfortunately does not look like a very good sign. Getting B is nice but only a smaller number of students can get an A. There is going to be a few students who would have received an A. Work harder next semester if things do not work out!
@@BingsAcademy Will there still be a chance of me being able to do HAST and still making it in?
@@tbanerjee6942 of course! never give up. you have to make sure you do really well in the test though
@@BingsAcademymanaged to get 7 certificates from doing a language competition and a coding class. And I also received 5 certificates from one institution that provided free courses online. Will this be sufficient and I also don't have any academic achievements because our school doesn't conduct ICAS and anything
@@tbanerjee6942 you can do ICAS externally! we have students that do it in the city.
hi bing can you tell me some last minutes tips for selective thanks!
for you specifically, read the question properly! You should not finish the test with heaps of time left. Read it carefully and pay attention!
THE SELECTIVE TEST IS OVER i know im a but late just wanted to do a quick overview so i found reading a few questions were quite thinking was also hard maths was pretty easy and writing was pretty easy i had to change one choice not because the test was easy or hard but because I'm moving houses i changed normanhurst high school to penrith high school. Overall i think i have a good chance of getting into ryde secondary college or Penrith high school but i dont want to be overconfident and i have one question, do you know the range of penrith high and ryde secondary and Chatswood high and do you know like what top % you have to be to get into Chatswood penrith or ryde secondary
yay! glad to hear you are finished with it. good luck with your choices!
Hey bing,
I got reserve for girraween hs but I don't really know if I'll actually make it in.
Do u know the likelihood of reserves making it in? I got top 15 percent for everything and my total was in the midway of top 10 percent.
we have 4 students also on the reserve list so it is a tough call. Girraween is not telling an exact number anymore and they are just calling it a reserve. What year are you heading into?
Year 8
My results were for the hast test
Did you make it? Do you have any tips for the test? Thanks
Can you give some last minute tips?
Also are there still school marks?
YESSS SELECTIVE IS OVER!!!
HOW DID YOU GO? How did you find each of the sections?
@@BingsAcademy well reading was quite hard and writing was okay, maths was actually pretty good but the last few questions were quite hard. Thinking skills was not what I expected because it was pretty easy to be honest, don’t want to be too overconfident though
@@rathnakermadadi3318 good idea to not be overconfident! i hope you make it in!
@@BingsAcademy thanks so much! - your tips have helped me very much!
Hey Bing,
I am looking towards getting into HAST Year 11 entry
How much would your 1 on 1 tutoring classes cost?
Thanks
if you are in year 10, the test is in August so it is likely too late for us to help
@@BingsAcademy I am in Year 9,
Thanks
Hello Bing! I just need some help on how I can practice for HASt. You said last time that hast practice papers are not accurate so how else can I practice
have a look at my video on abstract reasoning or square puzzle book. If you are in year 7, treat this year as a practice year as the chances to make it in for year 8 are slim for any school.
@@BingsAcademy Hey John. You made a video about what should a student's report look like in order to transfer to a selective school. As a person who attends a catholic school do your religion grades matter because I am not doing very well in religion and I mostly get C's and I am planning to transfer from year 8 to 9
@@tbanerjee6942 yes, the example in that video also had religion as a subject. You should be aiming to get A's and B's in all your subjects because it will show you are well-rounded.
I am aiming for a place in Penrith inn year9.I really want to make it this time. Is there any idea you have about how I can gain knowledge on any HAST test. I am doing an online mock test of it and in some videos you mentioned that they are inaccurate. In order to make it to the hast you need to have a good report which I am already working hard on and extracariccular activities. I checked the video and I am doing some abstract reasoning is there any way I can increase my chances of getting in
@@tbanerjee6942 penrith has very limited spots in year 9 anyway so just try your best. your best attempt is for year 10 entry as they have an extra class however that is also when the highest number of students try for it. It will also mean that your report and what you do this year has a very big impact.
Hey Bing,
I'm currently a year 7 student in a partially selective school. I am trying out for the hast test this year for Girraween, Penrith and Parramatta high school. My half-semester report consists of mostly all A's (maths, science, english, etc.) and two b's in pdhpe and art. Since the exam is next month, I am wondering what is the best way to prepare (although I do know that it is quite competitive and not to keep my hopes up). I've done 2-3 practice tests averaging around 25/30 for maths, 30/40 for English, 21/30 for abstract reasoning and as for my writing, I've been told I'm above average.
Do you think this is enough to secure a place?
hard to tell as there is like 0-2 spots for year 8 entry. it is going to be a grind. report is looking good though so treat it as a learning opportunity and work hard for future years.
Hi where do you find the pratice tests? Sorry ik its a bit of a stupid question!!!
Bing, selective is tomorrow. Im trying not to, but im panicking. what should i do for last minute preparations? i still dont feel confident in reading and i really need to find a way to improve at least a bit before the test.
Hi! I am sitting the exam as well! Don’t worry I am very nervous as well but I am confident that all your hard work will pay off I have a bit of advice for you:
1. Go over what topics the test will include
2. In drastic measures do 1 practice test or something but no more than that
To be honest I am not a top student but that’s my advice
nothing you can really do as the test is in the morning. i would say read the questions properly, pay attention to the test and sleep early.
@@rathnakermadadi3318 good advice!
@@BingsAcademy i finished selective an hour ago. english was a lot easier than pre uni and mathematical reasoning was pretty simple. I didnt perform well in thinking skills and had to guess a few. I couldnt think of any ideas in writing but i finished in the end but i dont think i started the writing well.
@@mikaveryepik3987 hopefully your other subjects can pull up writing! i will be making a video on writing soon, lots of tricks and very interesting question.
CAN YOU DO A LAST MINUTE MATH OVERVIEW
in asat i got high avg thinking skills, high average writing, avg reading, and below avg math, i feel like i could boost my reading up if i do better in math
@@itzvalor861 i think it will be too late for me to make a video tomorrow :P Most students would also try to sleep a bit earlier tomorrow to get ready for the big exam.
In saying that though.. GOOD LUCK!
@@BingsAcademy okkk I think I can at least get into Macquarie fields following your CSS Framework
@@BingsAcademy how do i call you through your website?
Hi about a month ago I did the pre uni ASAT test it was my first time doing anything like that and my first time going pre uni I found the test super hard and struggled a lot with it but when I did the NSW tests which they gave I get pretty decent marks above 80 percent so is that a bad thing? And I was starting to second guess myself when the ASAT results came so I'm asking you is it okay if I did bad on ASAT but I'm doing pretty good in the other selective trial tests
remember it is not the score you get in the test, it is how you perform in comparison to the other applicants. If it is an easy test, the average will be higher. If it is a harder test, the average will be lower. In order to get into selective, you need to be above average so try to focus on your ranking and position. Your mark in the test may help indicate which areas you need more help in though.
regardless, hopefully the test tomorrow is simple for you and i wish you all the very best! let me know how you find it :)
@@BingsAcademy my mark in ASAT was a bit below average but everything else I did is above average
@@randomman8131 focus on the rank not the mark!
@@BingsAcademy yes my rank in the ASAT was pretty bad but my rank in the all the other tests are good hope I do well tomorrow
