Every time i see one of these videos they instantly attack spinning and it proceeds to get shut off. I have been studying European and Asian martial arts since i was 5 (Pankration, Uechi-Ry, Kenpo, Tai Kwon Do) and I have seen on numerous occasions spinning back kicks or spinning back fists turning other martial artists into piles of flesh. And yes i have studied Liechtenauer and Meyer as well. Granted a spinning attack armed is different than unarmed but to say it has no place in combat is ridiculous. A trained fighter CAN use it effectively. To many HEMA schools are relearning old techniques with limited knowledge from books because we don't have 10th generation grand masters like karate and kung fu schools have. HEMA needs to learn from Asian martial arts schools about what really works and blend that with HEMA.

you can't grab and hold a sharpened blade like that. You can change the line of the attack but can't stop him from pushing it forward are pulling it back. using the off hand to "capture your opponent's blade" was used in 2 ways. 1 you can parry than use your off hand to push and block their blade from coming back to parry your attack on opposite side (main way). Second way was to attack and parry at the same time using your hand for the parry; not really suggested as it's a little hard to pull off and your almost guaranteed to get hurt and likely permanently. If you were to use a glove let alone a mailed glove (both of which would have to be agreed upon for the duel), then grabbing and for the most part holding to some extent would work.

Ethical concerns expressed @8:25 are shortsighted. It doesnt make sense if it enhances learning or concentration since you are still required to learn. It is as ethical as hiring a tutor, since that can give you an unfair advantage in education vs people less financially well off. There isnt a doping agency ready to test each student before they take a test and i would argue that there isnt a competition to learning unless you are considering the jobs after college as competitive. But often times those jobs go to folks who have social and other skills in addition to book smarts...
