- Do you believe in ghosts? I visit the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park (inspiration for Steven King's The Shining), to hunt ghosts and chase the paranormal. I'd shit myself if I heard that kind of banging around when I knew no one else is around in a supposedly haunted place.
I'll tell you this too - I used to be an atheist. I have a degree in physics, so I also consider myself a "fairly logical person."
But over time, I've come to think that something is going on. And I've seen and experienced some funny things, and found out that a lot more people have seen and experienced a lot of funny things as well.
We paint logic onto a reality that we simply don't understand. We've made this huge amount of scientific discovery, and then we crown ourselves for our achievement. And yet, we don't know what a minuscule fraction of reality we've actually managed to uncover.
Consciousness is a problem that not only hasn't been solved by science - many serious analytic philosophers take the serious stance that we'll *never* understand it, or that it is logically not graspable. There's a serious interpretation of quantum mechanics, the Wigner-von Neumann interpretation. The summary of the interpretation is "consciousness causes collapse."
I think reality itself is about being, not matter. Matter is like a ghost - consciousness is actuality itself. We see physical things and think that they're real, solid, logical and straightforward. I think this is the real illusion.
"Do you believe in ghosts" isn't even the right question, to be honest. A better question is "do you think that the only plane of reality that consciousness exists on is our own?" You don't even need to get into metaphysics to make that assumption.
I think one of the big problems with ghosts, aliens, bigfoot, etc. is that you get a lot of people who grasp at straws get into them, and seem like accepting any negative shred of evidence would somehow shut down their whole world view. In these things, there tend to be a couple cases where something seems particularly real. With UFOs, the accounts I tend to find more believable - and what I've experienced - is seeing satellite altitude objects behaving erratically. I once saw a "satellite," except it was zig-zagging along its path, but where its average position was moving as smoothly as a satellite in the sky. That one was weird as shit. And, you find people who can record similar things.
