So they will have no choice but to greenlight new stories, since where else are they going to find any fresh shootable material lol

    80s and 90s weren't about CGI.
They were about acting, making the situation feel real in the movies. That's why western weren't about special effects.
Nowadays, the movies are not going back to the source of making films. They are avoiding innovation and does copy paste on the stories.
Like love stories are so not real today, action movies are over using actors, drama movies are bad because they lack logic.
Being generic is such a safe move to do, that any movie makers does to attract the audience.

Yes. I remember 10 years ago, there was 4 maybe 5 good movies I’d want to go see at any given time. When I left the theater, I felt like a rock star because I imagined myself in them. They offered a chance to escape reality and go on really cool adventures. Nowadays, we’re lucky if we get 1 half-decent movie

"I Love Lucy" ran a skit where she and her bestie Ethyl were working in a chocolate factory. At first they had no problem wrapping the individual chocolates up and boxing them. However, the factory manager decided to "pick up the pace", and chocolates started coming out of the machine faster, but the two were keeping up if they skipped certain things, like being careful or wrapping chocolates individually. Pretty soon the machine picked up so much speed that it was all they could do to keep the candies from whizzing by, so they collected them, put them in their uniforms, ate them... you get the picture. That's the current state of cinema. It's rolling too fast for a story to make an impact or be memorable. Everything they make looks like the last thing they made, and eventually you get sick of the taste of chocolate when there's nothing else to eat.

At first I thought you might be wrong. After all, critics in the 80s ALSO complained that "everything is a sequel or a remake" (I remember because I was there for it). The difference is that YOU have shown us that, well, actually, it IS worse. Yes, they did make a lot of that in the 80s but nothing compared to now. So you changed my mind. Bravo, Sidney.

Disney have a huge monopoly on theatrical releases, and whether that plays a vital role on how the films are portrayed to the wider audience outside USA, I feel like the genre and plot are literally the same recipe everyone loves to taste, with a little bit of extra spice to make it "different" to their last film.

It is mainly 3 things: 1. Follow the money 2. How do you market in this day of age 3. Lack of fresh ideas being made and those movies being marketed correctly. There are more but those are the big 3.
    1. Movies cost to much to go see almost $100 for a family of 4 for 2hrs of entertainment. Streaming was a temporary answer back when it was mainly just Netflix but now it's navigating a mine field to try to figure out which movie is on what service. People bought streaming because it was the easy and relatively cheap option. Now people are going to just pirate movies more because you can spend $5-10/month for a VPN vs almost $100/month to sign up for all these streaming devices.
    2. Lack of Ideas star wars is a great example all you needed was one movie having Han Luke and Leah all together for that epic battle it could have been the first movie and they could have still all been all killed off but that is what every star wars fan wanted. On top of that there was no character build up I do not remember any of their names besides Ben and Rey. It took look 3 movies to become a jedi with training Rey was just a Jedi. Sorry I could rant for hours about this but you see what I mean. However TV shows allow characters to have backgrounds and depth which is why I think TV shows are somewhat on a Rise.
    3. Its been almost a century of movie making I think it is difficult (not impossible) to keep coming out with something new and fresh. You brought up the statistic in 1981 there was just less ideas already produced. Then as you mentioned it is pitching the idea. A lot goes into this and every studio has to have theirs movies meet so many status quos now a days. I mean can you imagine the pitch for something like Ghostbusters? That would get approved now and there are no longer new super popular actors and actrosess to carry the movie. They are all old and dying off. On top of that people don't really watch "TV" how we have thought of it for the past century. They are streaming a show or a movie and paying to have no ads or pirating. Unless you are big movie buff how would you know a movie is coming out? There is a new Indiana Jones coming out and I have only heard about it on the radio.
I would have to disagree with your grape jelly argument. Around 9:20 you said that more studios are copying Marvel then they next line you say even those are failing. Also if there was so many fresh ideas in the past how did those succeed but new ones are failing? I do agree that people do not know what they want but it is the lack of "buzz" or even a build of "buzz" which is making the industry fail. If you heard that Kumqat jam was delicious I am sure you would buy it even if it is not your cup of tea so to speak.
I feel the same way about Top Gun but I just think it was a great example of building up the Buzz and it being a decent (while somewhat dated) movie. They explained the backstory for the old fans and they made it fun as heck to watch. While things like Star Wars and Marvel have way to much to explain for the people to know the whole story.
Sorry very long rant I hope you have great weekend!

Not a rant at all! This was very interesting to read and I think you really hit the point on a lot of these topics. I do think people forget that typical family of 4 pays about $100 (even I didn’t do that math until you pointed it out 😬). I think the gaming industry is going through a similar process with their GamePass options and increasing prices to $75/game. It’ll be VERY interesting to see if the Writer’s Strike changes the film industry significantly too. Thank you for the comment! I enjoyed reading it. 🙂

Great video, I plan on going to college for filmmaking and think this was great insight on how the film industry is doing right now. I have also noticed that they have been making a lot of remakes and sequels recently. Like you covered in the video they know those are the things that will bring in the money, sense they have an already existing fan base. That's why I was proud to see something new like "Everything, Everywhere All At Once" do so well in the boxoffice.
Hopefully this boom of remakes is just a phase. Even though it can be nicet to see old films brought back to life I would love to see more new films being made.

Politics have been shoehorned into every aspect of entertainment and people are sick of "the message". Films that stay on topic usually profit even more so in our highly politicized western culture. People want an escape from reality when they go to the cinema even those with differing views.

Audiences don't always reject films like that, but I suppose they are less financially reliable than standard Avengers-tier films that are meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I would add that movies cost so damn much to make nowadays (some movies this summer are north of $300m) that they simply HAVE to be grape jelly for the studios to stand any chance of breaking even. Budgets are out of control and limiting what studios are making.

One thing to be said about changes being made to familiar IPs is that the audience has to like those changes. A reason why the Disney "Star Wars" and Lucasfilm movies are struggling is because changes are being made that go against what people liked about the original movies. The rash of sequels, prequels, reboots, "universes" and the like is because of familiarity (that "grape jelly"), the executives being afraid to give anything else a chance because of how much money it costs to make most of these movies, and laziness all around. But there is the saying "familiarity breeds contempt" and it's starting to happen and starting to show, especially with Disney.

  • @TheDalinkwent

Its the writing and mentality that goes into movies thats making them suck.
Most modern writers have no real world lived experience and they only write what they know..which is themselves, and worldview, so the movies reflect that. Thats why characters all end up looking, sounding and acting the same. Its the same world views being explored over and over, and yes I'am talking about the push for diversity.
If you have a bunch of liberal feminist who all took gender studies writing a action movie...its going to reflect that. Meanwhile if you have a writer who loves action movies and the genre (John Wick creators) its also going to reflect that.

    • @sidneyreed

I was actually thinking about this the other day, how homogenized we are becoming as a society. Maybe social media trends have something to do with it? I’m not sure. But many people are starting to look, eat, think, and act the same. Agreed, would say diversity of life experiences (and being ok with movies and stories having distinct themes instead of homogenized ones) is more important than just born diversity itself in isolation.

  • @JayDeadie

The LAst Jedi wasn't new or original in the slightest. It just took scenes from Empire and ROTJ and slipped the result of each scene. BTW, killing Snoke was another meta fan moment - in the 1980s fans would argue constantly about why Luke didn't kill Palpatine using the force to ignites his lightsaber which was sitting right on the throne. This was another case of the hack Rian Johnson not being able to get his mind in another universe, but instead thinking only about fan reactions. The whole "subvert the fans expectations" is a childish gimmick that only a smart 14 year old film student would come up with.

Those of us who hated the last Jedi were very upfront about the fact that we weren’t coming back unless the last Jedi was completely decanonozed. Love this analysis. As someone very passionate and even somewhat patriotic as to film a lot of the points you make stick a lot for me. America has become very spoiled in my opinion At least when it comes to art, and in many ways, have become a dictorial audience with cancel culture being a big deal. They're not very open absorbing new stories. Its very sad they are so hooked on nostalgia. Things like TikTok is also severely reducing their attention span of the newer generation and its putting story tellers in a tough spot to preserve audience retention. But hey I think there is always hope, and that there will always be a patient audience out there.

I don't see enough movies these days to judge because I tune out after 10-15 minutes---if I even try it. If I have to turn up volume or click on subtitles, I'm getting steamed. Then dark scenes are so poorly lit. Music drowns out dialogue. Transportation segments showing how one person gets from pt A to pt B used to be cut or curtailed. Is there more transportation filler now or is it just irks me more? idk. People walking down halls. vehicles. jogging. I know lulls play a part in pacing, but there has to be excitement bookending the lulls. When I do hear a line clearly and distinctly. it's an isolated line or throwaway line. Gimme meaty conversations and long scenes. I hate scenes lasting 20 seconds with constant faceshot back n forth. PUll camera back and show both actors. And for Pete's sake enough with the growly male or female vocal fry where all villains and heros sound raspy gravelly. To sum up. movies suck. cuz they're toddler mentality but with violence, sex and 50% CGI.

Endless remakes ( reimaginings) and sequels just beat that dead horse. Remember the endless parade of "slasher films" in the 80's? - For me a good movie gives the audience a good story, captivating characters, is entertaining and ties it all up without the need for 17 sequels. But, that doesn't bring in the $$ .

When you say "trillions", I guessing you mean "billions". Otherwise, 11 trillion is about half of the entire US GDP, and I'm pretty sure Hollywood movies aren't 50% of the US economy.

I think it is more a systemic issue from a 40 year battle against public education than a writing issue. When it is estimated the average reading level in the US is around 7th to 8th grade studios have to make simple, easily understandable movies because they are literally making a product for people with the narrative comprehension of children. It isn't that movies are getting 'worse' exactly but look at it through the framework "All movies are children's movies" and it all makes a lot more sense. Mix in a smattering of propaganda and recruitment films like Maverick and that is basically the field.

It would be interesting to see if someone's done research on that. I love looking at the numbers and tracing things back. Especially if we compare to other countries and their education system vs film production. I'm super curious now.

They didn't listen to the fans for ROS. They didn't listen to anyone. Because they never HAD a plan. You don't get to applaud Ryan Johnson and his egg head for stirring up the pot when he had NOTHING ELSE to come after. That was fly by the seat of your pants bullshit. The fact that they made a trilogy without writing all three films with a beginning, middle and END was the problem. JJ started it, but at least was vague enough to leave room to figure it out later. Honestly, all they had to do was go read fan fiction for a few hours and find an amazing story there and bam, 10 billion dollars. NOT HARD. But they would rather keep kicking the story can down to the next guy and wasting money making trash no one will remember or want to watch in 30 years.

It's not lack of ideas, it's not bad writing, it's not the pandemic. Nobody wanyto say so I will. It's a combo of "woke" ideology, extreme feminism and yep...#metoo. Im so thankful for the archives of movies from before the metoo crap. Before these silly "woke" people.

There is no current day financial model to create great films. We all know what happened to Miramar which was able to balance profitability and great visions from directors and writers. The mega studios only hire directors they can control, hire the woke united lazy writer that use POC, LGTBQ, feminists talking points as a substitute to good writing. The destruction of the physical media market has killed the ability for mid tier movies to exists. It gave movies a chance to be cult classics on DVD or VHS even though they did not make it on the original release.

Your analysis about grape jelly falls apart when the movie makers insert unwanted elements into these sequels of beloved IPs. Nobody wants to see woke messaging being jammed down their throats. Indiana Jones 5 is failing right now because the movie makers decided to make Indiana Jones a depressed old man who is constantly out maneuvered by a very unlikable "strong" woman. People expect to see an energetic and capable Indiana Jones, not a pathetic, miserable old man. If the studios want to revive a beloved movie franchise, that is not the way to do it.

No, just no. We're sick of movies because aside from easy Ws like comic book movies, Fast and Furious, and Transformers, there's maybe 5 good films the last decade.
Everything is cumquat jelly. Everything is preachy ass, political, boring, lazily written bullshit cumquat jelly. Or it's them reaching into the cellar and handing us jelly that expired ages ago with a new label that preaches at us and tells us that the original jelly we loved so much is stupid and we should feel bad for liking it and they talk shit on our jelly the whole time.
