We are Kerry & Dorie, a keen amateur allotmenteer and a 9 year old miniature schnauzer living and growing in Leicestershire. We have a kitchen garden and (sort of) food forest front garden, which I started cultivating in 2021. In Dec 2022 we took on a full-size allotment plot and at the end of 2024 we moved to a new plot with a polytunnel.
Join us week by week as I try to figure out how to best 'grow your own' in the home garden and on the plot as a relative beginner. Expect plenty of planting, harvesting, composting and yapping - me and the dog! I also do a bit of cooking, fermenting, hiking, and foraging. Look out for my brother-in-law, Mark, who is my plot neighbour, as well as my cousin, Becky, who also has a plot on site.

Ep111: Handing back my allotment plot after two years
It's been a ridiculously massive job to move plots, but we're finally on the home stretch! EXACTLY two years since my first day on Plot 33, and I'm handing it back. It's bittersweet, of course - at this time of year, I'm reminded why I want to leave (watch all my slipping and sliding on the wet, muddy grass!!) but of course I've lots and lots of happy memories on the plot - and it was my very first allotment! That said, I'm looking forward to being a one-plot-woman again and making plans for the new plot over Christmas - time for a fresh start!

Propagating perennial Taunton Deane kale
Rotavating the plots
Harvesting beetroot, leeks and spinach
Dismantling raised beds

Anyone else feeling a bit behind?? I didn't get any of my Autumn jobs done in November, what with the plot move happening, so the home garden needs a complete overhaul. The BIG move - round 2! Last week, Mark and I got so much done but there's still loads to move - including my arches, so I need to harvest the beans (and identify them!). I also need to harvest the cape gooseberries before they're killed off by the ice and snow that we are forecast.
