  • We're back! Dorie and I have been super busy on the plot for the last couple of weeks and things are looking a lot different - and just a little bit odd! We've planted out loads and loads of stuff (#slugfood) and been building beds and structures all over the plot. And then (and I quote) 'a clown vomited on the plot' 🤣🤡
    Mentions:
    ‪@Nicktgrief‬my bean man
‪@TheFarmyardGarden‬see Clare's channel for how a loofah should look
‪@emmasallotmentdiaries‬thank you for the ball idea
‪@spudsandroses‬thank you for the arch idea
    ‪@TheGrowUpChannel‬#jerusalemartichokesfail
    Products:
The arches are wilkos finest, but the jute netting is Amazon: www.amazon.co.... (note it took me four orders to get two the right size, but customer service was fine and free returns!)
Produce bags are from Sainsburys (30p each) and Aldi (25p each).

I like doing unusual or silly things in an outdoor space. It's great to see the flowers, etc but something whimsical makes it unique.
What a strange year for weather patterns. Unfortunately from reading up, this may be the coolest year we'll see from now onwards.

Talking of slug damage, I have everything in containers with copper tape around them, which helps a bit ,but not completely. The other day I watched a snail climb up the bamboo cain which was supporting one of my tomato plants inside the polytunnel, it was nearly at the top (how do they do that!) They should have the decency to have vertigo or something, anyway, while watching this snail I was also screaming to my hubby to come and get it as I hate touching them. I am going to have to toughen up, or I'm not going to succeed at this game. Slugs and snails have been rife this year, wet, warm weather perfect. Best of luck to you and Dorie, still loving your videos ❤

Oddly enough the slugs left most of my beans alone and went for the tomato plants 🤦‍♀️. Will you hand pollinate the pumpkins 🎃. I have one apple the other one fell off 😢. I grew onions and beans in the same pots last year and they were fine. Tree cabbage looks amazing. Climbing nasturtium would love the trellises. The things gardeners have to do to fight slugs! Thanks for the produce bag tip, that's a really good idea. I'll try it for my dahlias next spring. I think that even if there is a risk that aphids have a party inside the bags, the benefit of keeping the slugs and pigeons off makes it worthwhile. Your plot looks very productive, not mad at all. Fingers crossed, now that it's warmed up and we're having less rain, the squash and courgettes and beans can all start to get going properly. It's been such a slow start to the summer this year.

    • @dogontheplot
      @dogontheplot  2 місяці тому

Such a slow start! I've had to give up on a few bits. I'm crushed about the squash - I grew so many last year and I loved it. Oh well. Yes, I had to put a bag over a dahlia last night as it was getting slug attacked. Hopefully it will recover. Thank you for watching 😊🌱

@@dogontheplot I lost all my cucumbers again this year. I waited until June to plant them out then we had that weird cold snap and they got slugged. I've lost so many beans too, the slugs just eat the growing tips. I sowed about 5 times as many beans as I needed and just about have enough left for a decent harvest. It's funny, I'm a perfectionist with so many things but gardening has taught me to go with the flow and focus on the things that do well and even in tough years like this year, there are things that'll grow well. I hope you still get a good harvest of squash from your remaining plants, this coming week looks hot and dry so hopefully the slugs will go and hide for a bit! We can hope!

I've been trying to search the net for balls for pole ends, but didn't think of putting ball pit in the search field. You got so much done, did you get to watch any tennis? Good luck with all pumpkins and beans and everything. Will be interesting to see how things grow. I hope up your wonderful structures. I'm at the end of the season for cucumbers and patty pans, but still got lots of green tomatoes waiting to ripen. And I sowed beans recently, to take over for the peas. Not sure there is enough time left, hopefully some flowers at least. Those I have at work are growing, but very slowly. I know nothing about growing beans really, so it's all learning opportunities.

I'm loving the plot, you have worked miracles over the past few few weeks. I love the coloured balls, such a good idea. I've used tennis balls in the past and the small yoghurt type bottles. Those coloured balls look like what you get in a children's ball pool, so if you know anyone who is wanting to dispose of them you will have a supply for future use. I'm wanting to do arches across the path between some of my beds, but our allotment site is under threat of being taken away by the land owners, we're trying to buy the land and are fund raising like mad but because the future is uncertain I'm not going to invest in the arches just yet. I'm really impressed with how your plot has come on though and even if things are slow this year you'll have the backbone in place for next year, and I think most of us are struggling this year so don't lose heart, I'm hoping we're going to get get an Indian Summer and everything will flourish but just a bit later than usual.

What lengths we’ve gone to to overcome slug pressure!!!! It’s been a nightmare! I didn’t have a problem to start with as I put out beer traps at the very beginning to catch the first slugs before they had babies. Caught hundreds! Then I didn’t repeat because I didn’t follow my own advice to put fresh traps out when you think you solved the issue. Anyway, I tried your tip with sour dough starter. They caught sooooo many slugs the first night. And by the end of the week only the odd small slugs were left. I repeated a few weeks later and added Bicarbsoda. Caught a few large ones. Been under control ever since. But the starter is in the fridge ready to reboot!
Your plot looks fabulous. Loving the play pool balls. Well done with the shed. I did mine beginning 2020 and once I had a place for everything like you have now, it’s stayed relatively tidy other than when we’re curing onions. Which has surprised me. Hopefully, you’ll find yours will stay organised for a good few years.
I’m also finding a regular liquid feed for my greens, beans, peas and squashes/cukes has been necessary this year. It’s really helped give them a boost after the slow start. Just diluted comfrey/nettle/worm tea. 🌱💚

Mum and I were just saying this morning that the most effective slug control does seem like getting out and hunting them down. The shed is still tidy for now lol. My attitude now is if they want to live they better get on and live!! 🤣 Thank you for watching 🥰

Cleaning the shed is massive to your ego, motivation and satisfaction level. We all need small wins, medium wins and big wins. I think your plot is coming along just fine and battling the slugs is a tremendous job. I am blessed to not have that problem here.
We have had 25 inches of rain already this year and I have lost many plants to drowning. I should have hired a lifeguard!! All the okra gone many peppers and tomatoes also. So as y'all say there Hey ho! We can focus on the negative or the positive and that choice drives our narrative for the year. You poor gardeners over there and your slugs-sigh.
We have sandy soil and the only place I see a few slugs is some clay soil I had delivered and they do gather around brassicas-mainly cabbage. I always hear every gardener over there speak of compost. Maybe a load of sand is needed. We have also had an over abundance of rain this year.
I would say I would trade some mosquitoes for slugs but I’ve seen the size of your slugs😂.

But, I detect that there is a smoker on the plot, also. Ah, the veg plot thickens. I preferred that name. Maybe she’ll change it back. Not even 10 minutes into this vlog. Btw, welcome back! 😉❤️🥂
