You are very wise to suggest a mask when grinding or sanding metal ( or anything else ). I always use a respirator/filter mask with P100 cannister filters now, when doing any chemical or particulate tasks. Goggles too. Eat an elephant one bite at a time - an old saying of mechanics facing an extensive task which I have always taken solace from. If you have rust, work one section at a time. If you have many systems in need of attention choose one and begin. If you enjoy the process you will be sorry when you reach the end, wishing that your satisfaction could get yet another boost. If money is the issue, spread the expense out over time and make do with what exists. I have noticed a recent uptick in respect for old and simple Volvos - keep up your good work 🙂

Cheating - a very important topic, with broad implications. It seems that the world is plagued by dishonesty, causing a collapse in societies that relied heavily on trust. I hate it. I suppose that is why I enjoy mechanics - machines never cheat, they always perform their function, and when you fix a fault their is no doubt that the problem is solved. I feel that you can detect a cheater by little "tells" such as when they cheat on other matters - maybe overpricing, maybe cheating their wives or children or stupid people, maybe avoiding safety standards or substituting materials or parts. Or maybe just by supporting other liars and false ideologies. Trust is vital - it is an efficiency for society, and when it is lost much energy is wasted verifying, and a general feeling of anxiety and unhappiness occurs. How long will it take to rebuild trust ??🙁

I think it suits the use you are putting it to - probably the same use as everyone does 99% of the time - safe efficient transportation on ordinary roads. Most of us are susceptible to fantasy marketing in vehicles (and everything else) and end up buying too much performance for too much money, leading to anxiety and frustration. Why ? Do we think others will like us more ? Probably not, they'll just be jealous. Maybe we believe others will think we are successful ? Probably they will feel that we don't deserve it, and that we are wasteful. When you drive an older vehicle other people (generally) look upon your car as a pleasant image from their past, and you, as the driver, as a custodian of better values from the past. Especially when you have done the Work your😇self.

Moral is: keep driving what you have. Don't allow to pull marketing boloney on you. 'Pleasant image from past!' So awesome! We all custodians of values. Yours is a 60s model, so it's probably carbs or Bosch-D injection, with SOHC. They improved this engine over the years. You could take it up to 130-ish hp with off-the-shelf parts. For me personally is critical not only legroom&headroom but also rear axle drive important thing. Btw mouse trap can damage the froggy! 🐸 🪤🐭 So I can't implement traps. A lot of sprays for cleaning air ducts I know my coworkers using. Probably insane but I consider that more better to disassemble all system and washing it.

Doing the math, it will cost me $120k after taxes to buy a new truck to replace my 2002 Diesel Chevy Silverado crew cab LT. That's $12k per year for ten years if interest is zero. I can do an aweful lot of repairs to my current truck for $5K /year, and so far it's cost me no where near that. I average about $500 per year on repairing little things that pop up. That truck was paid off in 2007 and owes me nothing.

Really worth to continue maintain Silverados they very reliable trucks. More than these I'm not sure that today we can find V8 turbocharged diesel which would be so good after decades (correct me if I'm wrong).

People who criticize others who enjoy old machines, and the work that they entail, have always puzzled me. Is it that they don't like old styles ? Or that they don't like fixing things ? Or is it, perhaps, that they are a little bit jealous of someone who doesn't rely on large sums of money to achieve the Goal ? Anyways, I always laugh it off and confess to being infatuated with my possessions and happy to know things deeply 😑

Distractions - a real risk when performing intricate work. I never listen to talk radio , and I will stop working if anyone is talking nearby because of this risk. Too many mechanics hate their work and seek distractions, and it shows. Your experience with foreign mechanics is one that I have seen here as well - they take their job seriously and have a "can do" attitude which is increasingly rare. 👍

You left out materials - iron, aluminum, magnesium, plastics, ceramics and glasses - the learning is deep and fascinating once you are over the initial hurdle of ignorance. Focus is a skill that is in short supply but ever so important - I worry that many people see no need to do so. Old men seem to enjoy the focus mechanical projects engender. New cars are disabling - although you think they will be happiness inducing, they seem to bring anxiety - too much money, not enough understanding - so even if the car is likely to go some time before problems arise, you feel helpless to know if there is a problem, if it is serious, will it be expensive, and will I be cheated by the company that fixes it ???? I am always interested in the insight into culture that using machines and parts from different countries gives - Chinese cheaters, German overly tight tolerances, Japanese quality, Swiss certifications, American marketing bloviation, etc.
