Songs from the Saddle - philosophical musings on the motorcycling life
This channel is for thinking bikers - whose are capable of looking beyond the shiny chrome, the 8 inch TFT and 12 different rider modes.
Why do we ride? Why are motorcycles so irresistibly attractive? What is the meaning of life (OK. Maybe not that deep!)
Let's celebrate and explore the joy of motorcycles and how they can bring so much into our lives.

How to unleash your full potential as a rider
I am delighted to announce the publication of “Mastering the Machine” cowritten with Tom Killeen. Tom is the founder and director of i2i Motorcycle Academy, which has been providing motorcycle training in the UK since 2006.
In this book we set out Tom’s unique approach to helping riders, both new and experienced, overcome plateaus and fluctuations in their riding confidence.
The book is based on the premise that improving your riding is about changing your behaviour, which can be difficult, particularly if certain riding habits are deeply ingrained.
I have read many books on how to improve your riding, but learning new skills doesn’t mean that you will be able to apply them. This book therefore sets out a structured practical program through which we help you break old riding habits and create new ones.
The book tackles common problems riders have such as running wide in corners, failing to brake effectively and fear of riding in the wet. It does this by providing an understanding of the psychology and physiology of riding and the physics of how a bike works under different conditions such as accelerating, braking and cornering. A series of progressive exercises help you to overcome fears and fully use the potential of your bike - hence the title: “Mastering the Machine”
It has been a pleasure working with Tom Killeen over the last year to bring this book to press.
If you would like to buy the book it is currently available at an introductory price of £25 via Square Link: square.link/u/rD7WopfO

How to refill Triumph Scrambler engine oil without removing the exhaust
Переглядів 6673 місяці тому
I have heard of some people (including dealers) removing the high-level exhaust pipe to refill the engine oil. This is not necessary. All you need is a long thin funnel. I know this is simple, but I hope it helps some people. I make these videos to try and help other riders. Very useful, you saved me hours !
Where is that road .
Thanks Simon! Merry Christmas and ride safe! 🏍️🎄🎅🏻🇿🇦
Sank you, very good ! Fritz from germany
Great videos thank you. Totally agree! Standard service manuals used to explain how to set valve clearances now they warn you not to drink the battery acid 😒
congrats
UK is no longer part of the EU. So unless similar legislation was adopted by the UK Parliament, it is not a problem.
Nice video, thanks. I’ve had over 15 different bikes over the years ( I’m 70 now). Everything from MX, enduro, cruiser to cafe. Many different makes and models. The one I miss the most is my 1977 T140. Style, class and handling, what more do you need?
I am a bit sceptical about this setup for long off-road adventure riding. The triumph grab rack you’ve attached your panniers’s frame to is not very solid and I fear that after 1000s of miles of proper off-road tracks it will crack and your panniers at the same time. Any feedback based on your experience?
the pannier frame is not attached to the grab rack. The two are completely separate.
I really enjoy your tutorials for the T140. I find it easier to watch the vids than to figure out the manual, thanks .Keep on singing.
Looks very interesting. I see there is a collection option…where would that be from?
From the i2i Motorcycle Academy offices in Yorkshire.
Couldnt see it on Amazon, where is it avilable from. Thanks. Its ok i just saw the link
Thanks, very clear, I’ve had a spare tank sprayed up in the Steve McQueen colours so will be fitting it today, your video covers the removal process very nicely.
ordered to my address in France... thank you!
Dear Sir, We are entering 2025 in 10 days. I have been benefiting from your instructions a lot with my Scrambler 1200 XE. Thank you!
Great review and a lovely bike. The OIF Triumphs handle beautifully. Can I politely suggest that your overtake of the cyclist at 13.19 was far too close. I say this as a motorcyclist and cyclist. With good reason the Highway Code states that at speeds up to 30mph you should give cyclists at least 1.5 m and more at higher speeds. If you consider where the cyclists shoulder ends and where your handlebar ends this means that on road like that one you need to have you tyres at least on the centre line of the road. Really you should just pass on the opposite carriageway as you would overtaking a car. Just like many car drivers don't appreciate the perspective of a motorcyclist not everyone appreciates what it is like to be close passed when on a bicycle. I consider that riding a motorbike has made me a better driver and riding a bicycle has made me a better motorcyclist. Please don't take this the wrong way. Every day is a school day in my book 🙂
Thank you sir! I got the LED Fog lights and installed it. I would have not known about them had I had not watched this presentation! Thank you!
Number 1, In the UK we are not in Europe or under EU legislation, and I will be dead by 2050, and the repair restrictions is to stop you repairing insurance claimed vehicles and modifying new speed restricted vehicles with older parts
Was looking at TuneECU but this looks a far better tool for what I want to do. Ordered.
I've same bike and love it!!!! I've done 400 mile days....don't normally do that but is capable. Camp with it too!.
450 EXC? Isnt that high performance engine that has very short maintenance intervals?
Hello! Do you think the Kriega OS system has a chance to be fitted on the scrambler? I've seen the Mosko rackless being fitted with some mods for exhaust heat management, but that works.
I have the Kriega OS on my KTM and it will not fit on the Triumph. The bags may fit if you use another base or rack.
@@SongsFromTheSaddle I asked before I had the scrambler in my garage, but now I do. I had my old Kriega OS from the husky 701 (but the base seems to be universal dirtbike model), and I've put them on saddle to see if it's promising. Well, it seems to be promising, but may need a heat shield on the pipe or some other sort of heat isolation. On the other side I have the triumph luggage rack, and this needs to have the pins removed (the ones which hook up to the triumph bag), so that they don't rub through the OS base layers. If it works out, I'll post an update. Thanks for your reviews and content!
Thank you very much! You made this job approachable.
@SongsFronTheSaddle How do you find the fit on the Rukka? I am looking at a Rukka jacket but carnt purchase locally as not available here. Do you find the Rukka fits true to size of other jacket brands? Any parts the the jacket that fit in an odd way ( short arms- like dainese , tight chest etc?) Does that rukka jacket armor make it better to size up if you are between sizes?
I would not spend that much money on a jacket without trying it for size and fit first. I find that every jacket has some difficult aspects to fit and that includes both my Rukka and my Klim jackets.
Another clear and usefull video! thanks very much !
useful as always
Danke für die Workshops. Deine Beiträge sind immer klasse.
Thank you so much Simon, another really informative video. It's so much easier to watch jobs being done in person rather than having to bury your head in the manual. I will be saving this for any future job on my bike.👍
Have to agree, one of the most valuable tools when working with electrical and other connectors is patience. Alas, like a 10mm socket, it’s often missing from my toolkit!
Thanks Simon, I'm getting ready to install heated grips on mine and they mention removing the tank. That fuel line connector is a bit unique to me so this video will save me from struggling or breaking it. I'm going to try and do the install with just raising the back if I can. They also mention disconnecting the battery when all you do is remove a plug and then plug in the wiring harness. So yeah, I'm going to skip that as well. Hope you get out for a good ride this weekend.
Very useful information thank you
Absolute legend. I have this job to do on my XC soon as I'll be getting it sprayed and I wondering about the best approach to do this. Will have to invest in my own "specialist tool" 🤣
Did you sell your T140 , I haven’t come across any thing for a long time.
The T140 is currently my main means of transport. I ride it most days. I did have the carbs off it last week, but I didn't make a video, as nothing exciting.
I’d like better brakes and a decent speedo on my t140e
This is the result of voting in people who have no real spine or backbone and who will do what the far left wants, especially the minority troublemakers, over everyone else because people are too afraid to stand up and say enough is enough. They act like these classic motorcycles are daily drivers and spewing tons of toxic omissions. Just like in California they’re trying to or have talked about getting rid of or banning classic cars. Do you know the ones that are on the road the least! Let me tell you it’s gonna eventually happen. Eventually they’re going to say that only electric vehicles can be used. But since we don’t have the resources globally for 100% green, you’ll be using rideshare and these self driving taxis. You being able to drive on the states or governments roads will no longer be a thing because it’s for the good of the environment.
Throw off the Monarchy too. Understand, EU is trying to appease the AMOC gods by ditching ICE. It AIN'T gonna work. Getting rid of classic ICE vehicles is a news grabbing "sacrifice". Welcome to the newest form of Paganism. As to climate change, It's already baked into the cake guys.
It's looking like the common man has finally reasserted himself here in the States. The people of Canada and most of Europe need to get up on their hind legs and gain control of their counties again. All the bikes on the island don't pollute as much as one good battery fire.
I've got the Triumph pannier and am considering the rear rack. I'm only concerned about the overly light weight ratings on each. 11lbs on the bag seems like almost just enough, but 6 lbs on the rack is my lunch and nothing else. A top box is going to weigh more than that. I've also heard about some people getting cracks in the welds after fitting a top box then hitting some bumps. Then Triumph wouldn't warranty it because he fitted a top box. Looking at options, the Givi and Unit Garage racks will hold more weight, though I do like the factory look of the Triumph rack.
The EU is one of the worst monstrosities devised by people who thought their original local rulers were not dumb enough, authoritarian enough, and detached from reality enough... watching from a continent afar, it saddens me. And I consider myself lucky to have escaped decades ago...
Very informative video, exactly what I was looking for... I need a new helmet, and I'd rather have an open face than a full face for many reasons: better vision, better audio, can eat or drink without removing the helmet, can pick or make a call without fumbling and finally removing the darn thing, better ventilation and heat control... More comfort and much better situational awareness. My question was safety, you answered it. I drive proactively, have been riding on and off since the 70's and am very cautious with traffic and trees trying to hit me... I feel that I'm in the "low risk of high-speed accident" segment. I didn't know about the increased risk of neck injury with a full face, that's the last point I needed to fully make up my mind. Half face for the riding I do, which is dodging traffic in a crowded tropical city. Better see and hear what is incoming, than to think "that chin bar will save my noggin'". Thanks!
with the standard tube width many pannier systems can be used with these carriers - I will be using my Enduristan panniers
I think those highway pegs are from Illium Works 😉
Il suffisait d’y penser. Bravo! Je vais devoir passer mon tour car je ne pourrais pas supporter une telle accélération!
I got the triumph tall touring screen and it cuts the air and leaves my head in clean air. Never tried another.
Thank you very much for taking the time to record these valuable tips, greetings from Chile
Great review ❤ life is for sharing, but I also love to ride solo! 😊
Great beard ❤ bought Rukka, it’s very high quality piece of kit. Phenomenal 😊
Thank you, great video! I’m looking forward to doing the fork covers and upper engine bars. Did you have any trouble or have to improvise installing the uppers when you already have lowers? I also wish you knew where to get those foot pegs. I bought some on Amazon or eBay and they weren’t near long enough for my foot to have adequate purchase when wrapping around the lower engine bars. Glad to know a solution exists in the world. Cheers
One of the bolts (upper right side) was quite difficult to access. I had to ise a stubby spanner to get in the space. Otherwise easy to fit.
gorgeous bike but 26k in australia and dropping it would be expensive
Thanks so much for posting! What’s your feeling on the aesthetics? one of the things I love about the scrambler 1200 is the retro styling. Have you taken the bike off on rough dirt roads? Does the windscreen feel solid with moderate off-road use?
Screen does change the aesthetics and I loved the bike "naked", but it is so much more comfortable for me now on long strips. The screen is solid, even on very rough stuff.
